Russell E. Greenwood

World War II veteran
Russell Emilio Greenwood, 82, of Largo, Fla., formerly of Swansea and of Warren, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at home.
He was the husband of Barbara M. (Windle) Greenwood.
Born in Warren, he was a son of the late William E. and Emma S. Greenwood.
He moved to Florida in 1982, and to Largo in 1988.
He was a graduate of Warren High School, Class of 1939, and was a member of the first Class C football team to win a state championship.
He was also a member of Local Carpenters 94 and received a 50-year Life Membership Gold Card in the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.
Mr. Greenwood was a World War II veteran, serving in the Pacific as a SeaBee USN, receiving an honorable discharge with the rating of Carpenter’s Mate Second Class. He also received the Asiatic Pacific 3 Stars, American area and World War II Victory Medal Point System.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church in Largo at a later date. Internment will be at a later date in Barrington at Forest Chapel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Florida Suncoast or the American Cancer Society.
William E. St. Ours III

Special Olympics athlete
William E. St. Ours III, 15, of 54 Barker Ave. died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence. He was the son of William E. St. Ours Jr. and the late Renee (Turner) St. Ours.
He lived in Bristol most of his life before moving to Warren a year ago.
He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth’s Church, Bristol. He was a graduate of Kickemuit Middle School, where he received the Principal’s Spirit Award, the School’s Spirit Award and the Art Award. He was a Special Olympics athlete.
He leaves a stepmother, Tammy Perras; a brother, Nathan A. St. Ours of Warren; two sisters, Courtney R. and Brittney A. St. Ours, both of Warren; a grandfather, William E. St. Ours Sr. of Warren; a great-grandmother, Alice (Paiva) Osborne of Bristol; two aunts, Rachel Miranda of East Providence and Alicia Eastwood of Bristol; and his devoted friend, Thomas Burns of Bristol. He was the brother of the late Jesse A. St. Ours, and the grandson of the late Dolores (Martin) St. Ours and Jesse A. and Emily (Osborne) Turner.
His funeral was held Friday, May 31, from Sansone Funeral Home, Bristol, with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth’s Church. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bristol.
Alfred K. Fitting
Korean and Vietnam War veteran, retired truck driver
Alfred K. Fitting, 72, of Roosevelt Drive died Saturday, June 1, 2002, at Silver Creek Manor Nursing Home. He was the husband of Betty J. (McRobbie) Fitting.
Born in Lakeville, Mass., a son of the late Louis and Susie (Dunham) Fitting, he had lived in Bristol for 35 years.
Mr. Fitting was a truck driver for New England Paper Tube Co. before retiring.
An Army veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, he served for 20 years and was awarded a Purple Heart.
He leaves a daughter, Lynn Rebecchi of Bristol; four sons, Philip Fitting of Wilton, Conn., James Corbett of Riverside, Michael Corbett of Watertown, N.Y., and Patrick Corbett of Rome, N.Y.; two sisters, Mabel Brochu and Norma Thivierge, both of Warren; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral and burial were private.
Angela A. Vescera
Lived in Bristol
for most of her life
Angela A. Vescera, 98, of Benjamin Church Manor in Bristol died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Desilets Nursing Home in Warren.
Born in Philadelphia, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Raffaele and Filomena (Avossa) Cirillo. She was a resident of Bristol for most of her life.
She was a communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and a member of the Holy Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Benjamin Church Manor Association.
She leaves three sisters, Sr. Lucy Vescera M.P.F. of Bristol, Philomena Rao Bonomo of North Providence and Mary M. Vescera of Cranston; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was a sister of the late Oranzo R. Vescera and grandmother of the late Ann Leslie Rao.
Her funeral Mass was held Tuesday, May 28, in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, followed by burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Carol Marie Baumann, 74, of Lake Forest, Ill. and formerly of Manor Road, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Lake Forest Hospital. She was the wife of the late Harry A. Baumann Jr.
Born in East Providence, a daughter of the late Judge James B. Linehan and Rachael (Murphy) Linehan, she had lived in Barrington, Westport, Conn., Centerville, Ohio, and Indialantic, Fla., before moving to Lake Forest in 1999.
A homemaker, she was a graduate of the former Leander Peck High School, now Barrington High School, and was a member of the Rhode Island Honor Society.
She leaves three sons, Paul Baumann of Fairfield, Conn., Stephen Baumann of Wyncote, Pa. and James Baumann of Lake Bluff, Ill.; two daughters, Regina Kieckhafer of Andover, Mass. and Carol Neas of Old Saybrook, Conn.; a sister, Joan Smilgis of Derry, N.H.; and 12 grandchildren. She was a sister of the late Rachael Welch.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 3, from the W. Raymond Watson Funeral Home in Riverside, with a Mass of Christian burial in St. Luke’s Church. Burial followed in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Providence.
Mary E. Suares

Mary E. (Tucker) Suares, 77, of Bay Spring Avenue, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Inpatient Center in Providence.
Born in Providence, a daughter of the late William and Evelyn (Campbell) Tucker, she had lived in East Providence before moving to Barrington five years ago.
She was a retired pharmacy technician for Harvard Health of New England, working for the organization from 1986 to 1996. She previously worked at Miriam Hospital for 14 years.
She was a member of the Barrington Senior Center, the Bay Towers Tenants Association, the St. Luke’s Young at Heart Club and the Cape Verdean Progressive Club. She was active in the Barrington Prevention Connection.
She leaves a daughter, Evelyn Darka of Stone Mountain, Ga.; three grandchildren, Toni L. Tucker of Leominster, Mass., Donald A. Fitzpatrick of Worcester, Mass. and Robin M. Tucker; and two great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late William and Robert Tucker.
Funeral services were private.
Alpino Saracen
Leaves family
in Barrington
Alpino R. "Al" Saracen, 94, died Saturday, May 22, 2002, at the Metacom Manor Health Center in Bristol. He was the husband of Leona R. (Hudson) Saracen of Metacom Manor, with whom he shared 65 years of marriage.
Born and educated in Lynn, Mass., a son of the late Rocco and Rachel (Tenaglia) Saraceni, he was a resident of Lynn for most of his life.
He was self-employed as a window dresser for 40 years, retiring in 1974. He was a communicant of Holy Family Church in Lynn and was an avid golfer and art enthusiast.
He leaves two sons, Robert R. Saracen of Norwalk, Conn. and Donald R. Saracen of Barrington; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Hugo, Dardo and Raphel Saraceni.
A private memorial Mass will be held at Metacom Manor at the convenience of the family. Internment will be private. Arrangements were made by Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home of Lynn.
Joseph M. Rodrigues
School maintenance worker, founded Camp Stone Tower
Joseph M. Rodrigues, 80, of Bristol died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. He was the husband of Genevieve Ann (Barboza) Rodrigues.
Born in Bristol, a son of the late Mariano and Margaret (Marshall) Rodrigues, he was a lifelong Bristol resident.
Mr. Rodrigues was a maintenance worker for the Bristol School Department for 20 years and also worked for Kaiser Aluminum of Bristol, Collins and Aikman of Bristol and as a construction worker for Fanning and Doorley of Cranston. He was one of the founders, along with other family members, of Rod’s Grill in Warren and was a co-founder of Camp Stone Tower, a summer camp for special needs children in Bristol.
He was recently awarded a commendation from the town of Bristol for his many years of service to the community. He also received the President’s Award from the R.I. Special Olympics in 1996. He was a member of the board of RIARC, Bristol Chapter for more than 30 years and a volunteer for the R.I. School for the Deaf.
He leaves five sons, Joseph Rodrigues Jr. of Bristol, Mariano Rodrigues of Riverside, John Rodrigues of Swansea, and Paul and Mark Rodrigues of Bristol; eight daughters, Genevieve, Lydia and Carol Rodrigues, all of Bristol, Margaret Valerio of Seekonk, Dolores Bailey of Red Bluff, Calif., Mary Louise Winrow of San Antonio, Texas, Joanna Costa of East Providence and Dorothea Andrade of Bristol; four sisters, Mary Costa of California, Margaret Garcia, Frances Pacheco and Amelia Silvo, all of Bristol; 29 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was also a brother of the late Manuel, Mariano, Raymond and John Rodrigues.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, June 6, at 9 a.m. at St. Elizabeth’s Church, Wood Street. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. John Valerio, Aaron Costa, John Rodrigues Jr., Mike Rodrigues, Joe Rodrigues, Richard Andrade, David Marshall and Ryan Rodrigues will be pallbearers.
Thomas H. Byrnes Jr.
‘Father of the Bikepath,’
former town administrator
Thomas H. Byrnes Jr., 83, of 9 1/2 Church St. died Monday, June 10, 2002, at his home. He was the husband of the late Constance G. (Campanella) Byrnes.
Born in Bristol, a son of the late Thomas H. and Helen (Conley) Byrnes, he was a lifelong Bristol resident.
He was a letter carrier for 30 years with the U.S. Postal Service in Bristol, retiring in 1978. He was a state representative from district 91 from 1978 to 1982, the Bristol town administrator from 1982 to 1984 and the executive director of the Bristol Y.M.C.A. from 1985 to 1988.
He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army in World War II.
In 1993, he was the chief marshal of the Bristol Fourth of July Parade.
He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church, past president of the Holy Name Society, past president of the Parish Council, a reader, commentator and Ecumenical minister.
He graduated from St. Mary’s Grammar School and Colt High School in 1937.
Mr. Byrnes was past commander and past department historian of the American Legion Kearney Post 6, the Anthony C. Almeida Post 237 of the V.F.W., and Disabled American Veterans.
He was a life member of the Bristol Knights of Columbus Council 379 and Bristol County Lodge of Elks.
He was known as the "Father of the East Bay Bike Path" and had a section of the bike path named in his honor on May 17, 2002. He was also president of the Friends of the Bikepath.
He was a member of the Bayside Shores Yacht Club, a life member of the Cup Defender’s Association, Friends of Blithewold and the Bristol Historic Preservation Society. He was also a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians Dennis Collins Division 1, Newport, the Rhode Island Association of Former Legislators, Friends of Linden Place and Coggeshall Museum.
He was a founding member of Cub Scout Pack 6, National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 57, United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 328, the Newport Museum of Irish History and the Newport Irish Heritage Association.
He leaves three sons, Brigadier General Michael T. Byrnes, Ret. of Beijing, China, Christopher S. Byrnes of Bristol and CWO John Fitzgerald Byrnes, Ret., of Honolulu, Hawaii; three daughters, Judith A. Byrnes of Newport, Anne E. Byrnes-Bailey of Newport, and Barbara B. Robinson of Barrington; a brother, William P. Byrnes of Warwick; four sisters, Mary R. Byrnes and Grace T. Byrnes of Providence, Frances A. Newman of Salem Depot, N.H., and Gertrude L. Dwyer of South Dartmouth, Mass.; and ten grandchildren.
He was also the brother of the late Helen K. Tattrie.
Funeral services are from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood St., on Friday, June 14, at 9 a.m. with a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Wood Street. Burial with military honors will follow in North Burial Ground, hope Street. Visiting hours are today, Thursday, from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
