Eugene Edward Gaudet M.D.
November 4, 2011

Eugene Edward Gaudet M.D.
REHOBOTH - Eugene Edward Gaudet M.D., Physician, Farmer, Sailor, 92, of Rehoboth passed away Friday, November 04, 2011 following a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Claire (Fortin) Gaudet. Born in Norton, MA, he was the son of the late Jerome Urban Gaudet and Mary Maillet Gaudet, formerly of Prince Edward Island, Canada. He spent his first 50 years in Pawtucket, RI and the remainder of his life on his farm in Rehoboth. As many of his generation, he worked several jobs through school graduating from Providence College in 1942, New York Medical College in 1946, and internship at Roger Williams Hospital in Providence, RI. Following this he was commissioned a Lieutenant on active duty in the United States Navy and served as Medical Officer on Gearing Class Destroyers in the U.S. 6th fleet in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. He was proud to be a "destroyer man" from 1947 to 1949. He had a very busy and successful private practice in Pawtucket as well as being a Public School Physician. He was active in the politics and societies of his chosen profession. His career exemplified the aspirations and ideologies most held on their first day of medical school. Through his knowledge, availability, and compassion he was the caricature of the respected and loved local physician. If not engrossed in his profession, he could be found either on his tractor or his boat. He was an active farmer in Rehoboth for many years and later in life sailed his own boat on Narragansett Bay and boated with friends and relatives on substantial vessels from Maine to Florida. Those qualities not only characterized himself but formed the nidus of his interface with all others, either individually or collectively. Though he was an uncommon man, in his humility and concern for the common man, he had a keen sense of the journey all creatures great and small take through life. This was exemplified not only in his profession but in his role as farmer and sailor. He loved and was a steward of the universe surrounding him both at home and at sea. He was truly a man for all others. Most importantly he was the consummate family man. He was the devoted husband to his wife Claire of 62 years and loved and admired as "Dad or Doc" by his seven children and known as "Pepere" by his 19 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. The stature of this man is verified by his ability to have passed along his guiding principles to his children - all of whom continue his service to others in various medical professions. He is predeceased by his brothers Walter U. Gaudet, Albert J. Gaudet MD and his sisters, Eleanor Lucey, Frances Galvin, and Grace Robinson. Survivors include his beloved sisters Mary McCaughey of Pawtucket, RI and Dorothy Godin of Fort Collins, CO. He is also survived by his children, Eugene E. Gaudet Jr. M.D. and his wife Veronique Gaudet M.D. of Millau, France; Suzanne McBride and her husband Timothy M. McBride of Teaneck, New Jersey; Charles J. Gaudet M.D. and his wife Catherine Whelan of Portsmouth, NH; Philip R. Gaudet DVM and his wife Katherine Roberts Gaudet of Mattapoisett, MA; Peter M. Gaudet and his wife Cynthia Patch Gaudet of Taunton, MA; Michelle Fisher and her husband Edward L. Fisher of Tiverton, RI; Roberta Burke and her husband Arthur D. Burke M.D. of South Dartmouth, MA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, November 7, 2011 at 10am in Saint Cecilia Church, Central Avenue, Pawtucket, RI. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Pawtucket. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours Sunday 3-7pm in the COSTIGAN-O'NEILL Funeral Home, 220 Cottage Street, Pawtucket. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Pawtucket Soup Kitchen, 195 Walcott Street, Pawtucket, RI, 02860, would be appreciated.
