PALMA M. VENNARI

Palma M. (Grills) Vennari, 94, of 31 Hobart St., Westerly, died Dec. 2, 2004, in The Westerly Hospital, Westerly. She was the widow of the late Giordano "Jerry" Vennari.

Mrs. Vennari was born in Bradford, daughter of the late Albert and Ida (Costanza) Grills.

She had been employed as a machine operator at the George C. Moore Co. before retiring. She was a communicant of St. Pius X Church and a former member of the Rosary and Altar Society at St. Pius.

She was an accomplished cook, and she enjoyed having her children and grandchildren over for meals.

She is survived by two sons, Domenic J. Vennari of Burbank, Calif., and Albert G. Vennari of Wyoming; seven grandchildren, Victor Vennari, of Colorado Springs, Co., Joseph Vennari of Lexington, Ky., John Vennari of New London, Karen Vennari of Narragansett, Tina Staffon and Eva Vennari both of Burbank, and Robin Schwartz of West Lake, Calif.; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Ida Painter; and by six siblings.

Calling hours will be held Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. A Mass of Christian Burial. will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Plus X Church, Elm Street, Westerly. Interment will be in St. Sebastian Cemetery, Westerly.

PATRICIA F. VINCENT

Patricia F. Vincent, 84, of 45 Sisk Drive, Pawcatuck, died Tuesday evening, Nov. 30, 2004, at Mystic Manor.

She was born in New London Jan. 15, 1920, the daughter of Morgan and Sophronia Dray Flaherty. She married Harold Vincent, retired New London police detective, Feb. 20, 1941, in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church. He survives.

Mrs. Vincent was a graduate of the Williams Memorial Institute, class of 1937. She attended New London Business College. She had been a member of the Crowley Club and the Children of St. Mary, and she had a fondness for St. Mary Star of the Sea Church and parish. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, James Morgan Vincent and his wife Mary Ellen of North Branford and Peter Gerard Vincent and his wife Dennise of Lisbon; three daughters, Joan Carol Woodworth and her husband Richard of Pawcatuck, Patricia Mary Jensen and her husband Dr. Peter Jensen of Dothan, Ala., and Diane Marie Caufield of Norwich; two brothers, Morgan Flaherty of Waterford and Joseph Flaherty of New London; and a sister, Ruth Churchill of New London. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The funeral will assemble at 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London, and proceed to a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery. Calling hours are today from 5 to 8 p.m.

JOHN H. WALKER

John H. Walker, 84, beloved husband for 54 years of Irene (McCarthy) Walker of White Rock Road, Westerly, died Dec. 1, 2004, in the Watch Hill Care & Rehab, Westerly.

Mr. Walker was born in Westerly, son of the late James and Ethel (Keast) Walker. He had been employed for 35 years as an arc welder for Bostitch Incorporated, before retiring.

He was a graduate of Westerly High School with the Class of '38, and he was a member of the Reunion Committee. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served aboard the U.S.S. Sperry, in the South Pacific. He was a member of the Masons, Franklin Lodge #20, F.&A.M. and a member of the First Baptist Church in Hope Valley.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Helen W. Shea of Pawcatuck; three nieces, Lucinda Taft of Costa Rica, Laurie Taft of England, and Sue-Ellen Rieben of Guilford, Conn.; and a nephew, James W. Taft of Georgia.

He was predeceased by a sister, Winifred R. Taft.

Strictly private funeral service and interment will be held at the convenience of the family. Calling hours are omitted. A memorial service will be held in the First Baptist Church of Hope Valley at a time to be announced.

Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly, is in charge of arrangements.

HELEN A. KOCZKODAN

Helen A. (Barszcz) Koczkodan, 77, of 100 Arcadia Road, Hope Valley, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, at The Westerly Hospital. She was the beloved wife of Vincent A. Koczkodan.

Funeral arrangements, which are incomplete, have been entrusted to the S.R. Avery Funeral Home, Main Street, Hope Valley.

WILLIAM J. HOLLIDAY

William James Holliday, 80, of 83 John St., Westerly, died Dec. 3, 2004 at the Westerly Nursing Home.

Mr. Holliday was born in Westerly, of the late Francis and Julia Holliday. He was married to the late Ruth Arnold. Mr. Holliday along with his wife operated Happy Holliday's restaurant on Granite Street since 1958. Mr. Holliday graduated from Westerly High School class of '40 and held the state basketball scoring record for many years.

He served in the Coast Guard in WW II. He had a passion for thoroughbred horse racing and was owner of Quarry Hill Stables. He was a lifetime member of the Westerly Yacht Club, the Calabrese Society, Elks Club and Knights of Columbus and longtime member of the Winnapaug Golf Club and Country Club of Miami, where he enjoyed many a day on the links. And he was a communicant of St. Pius X Church.

He is survived by his son Timothy J. Holliday and his wife Kathleen, Michael T. Holliday and his wife Rebecca, William J. Holliday and his wife Shelly and Donna H. Townsend and her husband Tom, eight grandchildren, brothers Jack and Joe Holliday, sister Priscilla Kearns and was predeceased by sisters Betty Sammataro and Rosanna Holliday and a brother, Francis "Barney" Holliday.

Calling hours will be held Monday 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, Elm Street, Westerly. Interment will be in St. Sebastian Cemetery, Westerly.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Pius X Church, 44 Elm St., Westerly, in his memory.

LOUIS J. PRIZITO

Louis James Prizito, 70, of Greenman Ave., Westerly, died Dec. 4, 2004, at The Westerly Hospital.

Born in Westerly, he was the son of the late Louis and Evelyn (Foley) Prizito.

He was employed in the electrical maintenance department at The Westerly Hospital for many years. He loved the ocean, was an avid fisherman, and enjoyed boating.

He was also a standout athlete at Westerly High School, member of the Class of 1952, and an excellent bowler in his younger days.

He is survived by a daughter, Linda Dyer of Vernon, Vt.; a brother, Robert Prizito of Florida; two grandchildren, Jesse Dyer of Brattleboro, Vt., and Jill Dyer of Vernon; a great-grandson, Cade Wilson-Dyer of Brattleboro; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Madeline Martin.

A funeral service will be held in the Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Tuesday at 1 p.m. A calling hour will precede the service, from noon to 1 p.m. Burial will be in St. Sebastian Cemetery.

BETSY JANE BARTHOLET

Betsy Jane Bartholet, Jan. 9, 1939 - Dec. 3, 2004.

Betsy, a Stonington resident since 1993 and a summer resident since 1967, died on Dec. 3, 2004, of cancer.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Chauncey; her children Anne, Charles and Sanford, their spouses Mathieu, Anne and Helen; and six grandchildren, Nicolas, Pauline, Luke, Doyle, Andrew and Benjamin. She is also survived by her sister, Susan Sedgwick, of Holden, Mass., and nine nieces and nephews.

Betsy was an energetic and upbeat volunteer in a number of local organizations. She scheduled and drove for the Calvary Church Meals on Wheels program and also drove community members to various hospitals and doctors in the area through the Stonington Community Center program. Betsy's straw hat, high spirit and limitless patience were a feature of the paperback table of the Stonington Fair for many years. Mystic Seaport knew her carpentry skills well through the Pilots Program.

Betsy loved to fly and was deeply involved with the Westerly Airport Association for which she was treasurer and the Westchester Aviation Association where she had also served as treasurer. The Young Eagles will remember her joy at the yoke of her Cessna 150 at the Westerly and Groton air shows, which she also helped to organize.

Betsy loved life in all its flavors: kids, flying, sports and the arts. She was a soft touch for any dog that needed a home. Betsy worked as a nursery school teacher for Hitchcock Nursery School, and later in various positions in the public high school in Scarsdale, N.Y., where she lived for 30 years. She was an enthusiastic golfer at the Stonington Country Club and was a longtime member of the Wadawanuck Club where she won singles and doubles tennis titles and was Governor for Swimming several times. Betsy graduated from Connecticut College in 1960.

A memorial service will be held at Calvary Church on Dec. 11 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Stonington Community Center, 28 Cutler St., Stonington, CT 06378 and Calvary Church, 29 Church St., Stonington, CT 06378.

The family expresses their gratitude to the staff of Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London for its kindness.
