ANTOINETTE M. COSENTINO
The family of Antoinette M. "Toots" (Gengarello) Cosentino, 82, of Emerald Street, Westerly, mourns her passing. She lost her battle against cancer on Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at the Westerly Nursing Home.
"Toots" was the daughter of Jennie Mae and Joseph L. Gengarello of Westerly. She leaves a son, Joseph M. Cosentino of Westerly; her daughter, Jean LoPriore of Westerly; her grandchildren, Judith Nary Cosentino of North Providence, and Kyle C. LoPriore of Westerly; and her sister, Mrs. Rose Wheeler of Memphis, Tenn.
Mrs. Cosentino was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Frank J. Cosentino Sr.; her eldest son, Frank Jr.; and her grandson, Alexander LoPriore (Birkbeck).
Mrs. Cosentino was born in Westerly on Feb. 1, 1922, and resided and raised her family in Westerly. Educated locally, she graduated from Westerly High School in 1940. As a communicant of St. Pius X Church, one would often see Toots in the front pew during Mass. Her working career began at Moores Mill on Beach Street; from there she went on to run the breakfast shift at the Westerly Nursing Home kitchen for several years. She spent many hours devoted to the charity work of the parish, by serving as the president of the St. Pius X Rosary and Altar Society.
Mrs. Cosentino's favorite pastimes were to spend time with family and friends, often in "sewing circles" or at her Saturday night card parties of pinochle and cribbage. She also knitted and crocheted many items for her family and home, as well as donating many sweaters, caps and afghans to charities for fund raising raffles. She considered herself a "master embroiderer" and adorned her home with the delightful and attractive examples of the intricate types of embroidery.
"Toots" greatest pleasure was to be found in her cooking and in creating a warm hearth and home where any and all were fed. Her favorite time of year, Christmas, would find her busy in her kitchen, baking cookies and delicacies, and preparing the traditional Italian dishes for Christmas Eve. Her favorite story to share was of her daughter Jean, as a toddler, being brave enough to handle and prepare the eels for dinner, because Toots couldn't bear to touch them. Jean made it possible to add her father's favorite dish to the Christmas Eve dinner. She enjoyed preparing the delicacies of other times of the year, such as homemade "soupy" and "frittata" for Easter. Her love for her family, friends and church activities, and other charities was evident in the generosity of her kitchen.
Toots has also been known as the "Candy Lady" when she ran the Confectioners Department of the now defunct Fisher's Big Wheel store in the Franklin Street shopping center. Often she was seen simultaneously visiting with customers and friends while busily stocking shelves in her department.
As a mother, Toots was always in attendance at Westerly Little League games at White Rock to see her children play and her husband coach countless games. Later, she and Frank went to every LaSalle Academy sporting event, often driving long distances, to be present when a son participated. She also enjoyed traveling, such as a trip to Las Vegas with her husband and when she and Frank took the entire family on trips to Italy, England and Disney World.
Mrs. Cosentino's later years were spent volunteering at the Westerly Public Library and at the front desk of the Westerly Hospital for 13 years. Toots was always happy to share information, news and often her delicious chicken cutlets, famous stuffed peppers or any array of Italian cookies. Her love and dedication to her family and community were always evident in her hard work and generosity and will be missed by many.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 7, from Rushlow-Iacoi Funeral Home, 64 Friendship St., Westerly, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Pius X Church, 44 Elm St., Westerly. There will be no procession from the funeral home. Calling hours will take place at the funeral home on Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be private.
