Sister Hedwig Pawluc - North Providence
Sister Hedwig Pawluc, Franciscan Missionary of Mary, the daughter of the late Nikodem and Anna (Kudzneka) Pawluc died April 12 at St. Antoine’s Residence in North Smithfield.
Before she entered the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary she was a piano student of a famous Russian composer and conductor who wished her to be orchestra accompanist of the Providence Symphony.
She entered the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, Dec. 13, 1933, at Providence where she pronounced her first vows June 13, 1936.
As an accomplished musician, throughout her religious life, she served as organist and choir directress in communities in New York, Cincinnati, Boston and Providence.
She was sent in mission to St. Francis Sanatorium, now known as St. Francis Hospital, in Roslyn, N.Y., where she became a licensed practical nurse caring for children with rheumatic fever.
She pronounced in final vows June 13, 1942, at St. Francis Chapel in Roslyn.
In Divine Providence Shelter she taught art to the Mission Circle and acted as receptionist and Girl Scout director.
She also was a gifted artist and her work in art took form in portraits, calligraphy and the ornamentation of vestments and accessories.
She was sent to teach in St. Anthony’s School in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she taught classroom music and orchestra.
Her ministries included visits to the homes of her neighbors in an underprivileged segment of society.
A highlight during this part of her life was the study of Gregorian Chant with Father De Deo, O.F.M., liturgist and composer, then teaching at Cincinnati’s Teachers’ College.
During her convalescence from an illness, she spent a year at Our Lady of Charity in Providence.
Her time was given to doing fine embroidery as well as painting.
When St. Clement’s Eucharistic Shrine in Boston opened, Hedwig was sent there to be organist and choir directress.
She also helped in the sacristy and, on occasion, was privileged to assist with the Byzantine Liturgy, which gave her knowledge and experience in this beautiful and intricate rite.
Her other works again included painting and calligraphy.
In 1966, Sister Hedwig returned to Holy Family in North Providence where she served as organist and did hand printing on documents and citations.
She leaves a sister, Mary Warriner in Kansas, and several nieces and nephews,
Visiting hours are Tuesday, April 15, from 4-8 p.m. with a wake service at 7 p.m. in the Holy Family Chapel, 399 Fruit Hill Ave., North Providence.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, April 16, at 11 a.m in the Holy Family Chapel.
Burial will be in the Holy Family Cemetery.

Sister Mary Catherine Docherty - North Smithfield
Sister Mary Catherine Docherty, Franciscan Missionary of Mary, Ein Karim Community, North Smithfield, died March 23 at St. Antoine’s Residence.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, she was a daughter of the late James and Mary (Donnelly) Docherty.
She entered the Institute of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary at Coldash, England, September 1946 where she pronounced her first vows March 19, 1949.
She was sent in mission to the United States and pronounced her final vows March 19, 1952, in Holy Family Convent in North Providence.
She traveled all over the United States selling the handwork made in the Missions, then served as a group mother in Mount St. Francis, Woonsocket, until 1957.
She was a receptionist at St. Clement’s Eucharistic Shrine and then at Our Lady of Millbrook Convent in New York.
She was the residence supervisor at St. Clement’s Residence for Women and also at St. Francis Residence in San Francisco.
From 1979 until her last illness, she served as the activities director for the Fruit Hill Day Services for the Elderly, North Providence.
She leaves two sisters Philomena McCafferty of Stirlingshire, Scotland, and Sister Marie Thérèse of Cardiff, New South Wales; and a niece and several nephews.
Visiting hours are Tuesday, March 25, from 2-8 p.m. with a wake service at 7 p.m. in the Holy Family Chapel, 399 Fruit Hill Ave., North Providence, with a Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday, March 26, at 11 a.m. in the Holy Family Chapel.
Burial will be in the Holy Family Cemetery.

Theresa B. Descoteaux - Woonsocket
Theresa B. Descoteaux, 84, of Morin Heights Boulevard, Woonsocket, died Sunday, March 23, at Landmark Medical Center.
She was the wife of the late Royal Descoteaux.
Born in Cumberland, a daughter of the late James and Angelina (Adam) Homich, she was a Woonsocket resident for most of her life.
Mrs. Descoteaux worked as an assembler for the Miller Electric Company for many years.
She was the mother of the late Jeannette Descoteaux and the sister of the late Jeannette Lupien.
She leaves several nieces and nephews.
All services are private.

Theresa Goryl - Cumberland
Theresa Goryl, 80, of Alaska Street, Cumberland, died March 22 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.
She was the wife of the late Theodore P. Goryl.
Born in Central Falls, the daughter of the late Ovila Sylvestre and the late Aurore Fortier, she had lived in Cumberland for the past 45 years and was a communicant of St. Aidan Church.
She was a seamstress for the Rayco Company of Pawtucket for many years and also worked as a waitress for the Village Haven of North Smithfield for many years.
She enjoyed making crafts and attending craft shows.
She leaves a son, Thomas Goryl of Rumford and a granddaughter, Lindsey Goryl.
She was the sister of the late Arthur, Leo and Raymond Sylvestre, Antoinette Pearson, Bernadette Rouilier and Ida Thomas.
Her funeral will be held Wednesday, March 26, at 8 a.m. from the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Cumberland, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. Aidan Church, Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited and may call Tuesday from 4-8 p.m.

William Patrick Cafferty - North Providence
William Patrick Cafferty, 91, of Rowley Street, Providence, formerly of North Providence, a retired letter carrier, died peacefully March 28, 2008, at the VA Medical Center.
He was the husband of Evelyn M. (Carnevale) Cafferty; they had been married for 64 years.
Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Francis H. Cafferty Sr. and Helen V. (Mahoney) Cafferty.
William was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Besides his wife he leaves five children, Michael Cafferty, Susan Moore and Patrick Cafferty, all of Providence, Nancy Cafferty of Wakefield and Jane Lewis of North Kingstown; four grandchildren, Chelsea Cafferty, Evelyn Margaret Moore and Colin and Alexandra Lewis; a brother, John Cafferty of North Providence, and two sisters, Carol Mason of Greenville and Anne Smith of Cocoa Beach, Fla.
He was brother of the late Francis Cafferty Jr. and Mary Sharpe.
His funeral will be held Tuesday at 9 a.m. from the ROBBINS FUNERAL HOME, 2251 Mineral Spring Ave., North Providence with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Thomas Church, Fruit Hill Avenue, Providence.
Burial with military honors will be in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.

Michael Karbonik - Cumberland
Michael Karbonik, 87, of Abigail Road, Cumberland, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2008, in Our Lady of Fatima Hospital, North Providence.
He was the husband of Simone (Roy) Karbonik; they had been married for 61 years.
Born in 1920 in New Britain, Conn., the son of the late Basil and Martha (Harajda) Karbonik, he had lived in Cumberland for 61 years, and previously lived in Connecticut.
He worked for Valley Gas Company, now National Grid of Cumberland, for 15 years, retiring in 1986.
He was a communicant of St. Joseph Church where he was the first lector.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, David Karbonik and Peter Karbonik, both of Cumberland; three daughters, Kathy Halle in Maryland, Carol LaPorte in the Netherlands and Anne Karbonik of Cumberland; four grandchildren, Jaap and Jesse LaPorte and Juliana and Elise Karbonik; and a sister, Mae Karbonik of New Britain.
He was the brother of the late Olga Riedel and Jo Burger.
His funeral will be held Monday at 10 a.m. from the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Route 122, Cumberland, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph Church.
Burial will be held Tuesday at 9 a.m. in St. Joseph Cemetery, Cumberland.
