Elizabeth L. Brown - East Greenwich
Elizabeth L. (Barber) Brown, 84, of East Greenwich died peacefully June 16 at Philip Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence.
Born in Wickford, she was the proud daughter of the late Russell W. Barber and Fannie V. (Baker) Barber. She was the companion of the late Robert Petrie. “Ebbie” was a 1946 graduate of the University of Rhode Island with a degree in home economics as well as a Rhode Island College graduate in education. After retirement from the Warwick public school systems, she went on to home tutor and advocate for many children who could not attend school.
As a young adult, Mrs. Brown was active in the Junior League of Providence and the Republican Town Committee of East Greenwich, campaigning tirelessly for local and national candidates. Mrs. Brown was a wonderful fundraiser for Kent County Hospital Auxiliary and Handicapped Workshops of Rhode Island. Mrs. Brown has been an active communicant of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church of East Greenwich, serving on the altar guild and as an usher for over 60 years. She was a member of the Mayflower Society, a Daughter of the American Revolution, East Greenwich Garden Club, Pettaquamscutt Historical Society and a 60-year member of her beloved Dunes Club of Narragansett.
Betty’s continued source of pride and joy was always her family. As a descendant of Benjamin Fowler of Wickford, Betty spoke often and with great reverence of her family’s Wickford roots. Betty’s continued delight and pleasure was her son and daughter and her beautiful grandchildren. She leaves her two children, Christopher W. “Kit” Brown and his wife Maureen of Glocester and Joslin Barber Leasca and her husband Thomas of Matunuck. She was the loving grandmother of Amy Rebecca Leasca, Stacey Katherine Barber Leasca, Christopher W. Brown Jr. and Russell H. Brown. She was the sister of the late Russell W. Barber, Jr.
Her Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at 11 a.m. in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 99 Pierce St., East Greenwich, RI 02818. Burial will follow in Elm Grove Cemetery, Wickford. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Monday from 5to 8 p.m. in THE CRANSTON-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME of WICKFORD, 140 West Main St., Wickford Village, North Kingstown. Ernestine Scorpio - Smithfield
Ernestine “Esther” Scorpio, 83, of Church Street, Greenville, died Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at her home.
She was the widow of Anthony Scorpio. Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Domenic and Emilia (Giglio) D’Attorro. She had been resident of Greenville since 1990 and previously had lived on Fruit Hill Avenue in North Providence. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels at the Smithfield Senior Center and was a member of Bally’s Gym in North Providence where she had exercised with her friends every day for the past 20 years.
She was the beloved mother of Anthony Scorpio of Chepachet and Susan Laurito of Greenville; the grandmother of Nicole Sisco, Michael Laurito and Briana and Ariel Scorpio; the great-grandmother of Daniella Sisco; and the sister of Evelyn Ferruolo of North Providence and Sylvia Robbio of North Providence and Florida. She was the sister of the late John and Anthony DiAttorro, Josephine Colletta, Dorothy Martinelli and Ida Zarrella.
Her funeral will be held Monday at 8:30 a.m. from the *Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home, Route 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Philip Church, 622 Putnam Pike, Greenville. Visitation is Monday from 8-9 a.m. Burial is in St. Ann’s Cemetery. Evelyn Ondrasek - Providence
Evelyn Ondrasek, 76, of Providence passed May 21, 2010.
She was the wife of the late James E. Ondrasek. She was the daughter of the late Giuseppe and Rose (Dagostino) Del Farno. She leaves a sister, two daughters, three grandchildren and a great-grandson. We love you forever and you will be missed always.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated June 3 at 9 a.m. in St. Ann Church, 2 Russo St., Providence.
Everett J. Benoit Sr. - Smithfield
Everett J. Benoit Sr., 93, of Smithfield passed away Dec. 30 at the Greenville Health Center.
Born in Providence July 20, 1917, to Euclid and Cordelia (Auger) Benoit, he was married to Elizabeth (King) Benoit for 72 wonderful years. Beloved father of Denise Benoit of Jamestown, Everett J. Benoit Jr. of Smithfield and Robert J. Benoit and his wife Marie of Harmony; grandfather of three and great-grandfather of three; and brother of Lillian Curtin.
Mr. Benoit was employed by Brown and Sharpe. He was a veteran of World War II, a Smithfield Little League team manager for many years and a member of St. Michael’s Church Holy Name Society.
Visitation was held Tuesday, Jan. 4 with a funeral on Wednesday, Jan. 5 at 10 a.m. from the PONTARELLI-MARINO Home, 971 Branch Avenue, Providence. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Edward Church, 997 Branch Ave., Providence, burial, with military honors, followed in R.I. Veteran’s Cemetery, Exeter. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the R.I. Veteran’s Medical Center, Patient Activities Fund, 830 Chalkstone Avenue, Providence, RI 02903.
George Scothon - Cumberland
George “Jud” Scothon, 88, of Cumberland passed away Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011.
He was the husband of Marguerite (Bacon) Scothon. Born in Cumberland, he was the son of the late William and Jean (Boyd) Scothon. Mr. Scothon was an Army veteran of World War II. After the service, he was an accountant and for 23 years. He was a purchasing agent for Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, retiring in 1991. Jud was an avid Yankees and Bruins fan. He was involved in Cumberland Youth Sports for many years and was affectionately known as “Coach.”
Besides his wife he leaves five children, Linda Iannetta, Kathleen Mutter, William Scothon, Arthur Scothon, and Marguerite Vadnais; and 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Monday at 9 a.m. from the O’NEILL Funeral Home, 3102 Mendon Road, Cumberland, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Joan of Arc Church, 3357 Mendon Road, Cumberland. Burial with military honors will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours are Sunday from 4-8 p.m.
Gloria H. M. Buckett - Smithfield
Gloria H. M. Buckett, 88, of Wade Drive, Greenville, died April 11, 2010, at the St. Joseph Hospital Fatima Unit in North Providence.
She was the wife of the late Llewellyn “Bud” Buckett. She was born in Providence, the daughter of the late Carl H. and Emma M. (Jannson) Johanson and was a resident of Greenville since 1973. Mrs. Buckett had been a telephone operator for more than 30 years and an office employee for the former N.E. Tel & Tel Co. in Providence. She was an active member of Our Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church in Smithfield and the Smithfield Senior Center and was known for her oil paintings, Hi-Lo-Jack games and enjoyed the Rhode Island beaches.
She leaves two sons, John L. and Thomas C. Buckett, both of Greenville and a grandson, Alex Buckett of Homewood, Ill. She was the sister of the late Evelyn Hackett, Dorothy Keyock, Florence Horton and Louis Rosberg.
Her funeral service will be held Thursday, April 15, 2010, at 10 a.m. in the Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home and Crematory, 659 East Greenwich Ave., West Warwick Calling hours are Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. Interment is in Highland Memorial Park, Johnston. John G. Voyer - Woonsocket
John “Jack” Voyer, 68, died Sunday, April 11, 2010, at his home in Lake Cormorant, Miss.
Born in Woonsocket, he was a son of the late Henry and Florence (Carpentier) Voyer. John served his country in the U.S. Army as a private first class and worked for many years at various casinos in and around Las Vegas, Nev. He later retired and resided in Lake Cormorant. Jack was a caring father, grandfather and brother. He will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, hockey, hunting, fishing, camping and riding his four wheeler.
He leaves his son, Gerald Voyer and his wife Celeste of Pennsylvania; his daughter, Roxanne Ladouceur and her husband Paul of Blackstone; and three grandchildren, Gabriel Lamoureux, Matt Voyer and Luke Voyer. He was the brother of Francoise (Voyer) Phaneuf and the late Henry W. Voyer.
There will be a service dedicated in his memory on Sunday, April 25, 2010, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 17 Congress St., Milford, MA 01757. The service will start at 10 a.m.
Joseph P. Belanger - Woonsocket
Joseph P. Belanger, Jr., 53, of Woonsocket, died November 22, 2010.
He was the son of the late Joseph P. and Dorothy (Platt) Belanger, Sr. He leaves two sons, four sisters, one brother, fifteen nieces and nephews and many friends. We love and miss you.
Katherine Joinville - Lincoln
Katherine “Kitty” (Horbaychuk) Joinville, 85, of Church Street, Manville, died Monday, Nov. 29, 2010, at Landmark Medical Center with her family by her side.
She was the wife of the late Henry L. Joinville. Born in Woonsocket, she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Anna (Kiczak) Horbaychuk. Kitty worked for Puritan Peterson Assembly and also as a repair clerk for New England Telephone for 10 years, retiring in l981.
She was a Girl Scout Leader for junior and cadet troops for 18 years in Manville and was Northern Rhode Island chairman for Girl Scouts, Marion Awards. A member of the Otto Club in Woonsocket, she also volunteered at St. Antoine Residence and the ARC and was a travel coordinator for the Universal Senior Club. She also was a member of St. Joseph Senior Citizens.
She leaves a son, Michael Joinville, of Manville; three daughters, Anna Desplaines, of Glocester, R.I., Elaine Mack, of North Smithfield and Patricia Wynne, of Goffstown, N.H.; and seven grandchildren and a great-grandson. She also was the sister of the late Nellie Procyszyn, and John Horbaychuk.
Her funeral will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. in the S. DiPardo Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1583 Diamond Hill Road, Woonsocket, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. James Church, Manville. Burial will be in The American Ukrainian Cemetery, Bellingham, Mass. Relatives and friends are invited. Calling hours are Friday from 4-9 p.m.
Kathryn G. Steere - Glocester
Kathryn G. (Guthrie) Steere, 88, of John Steere Road died Thursday, April 29, 2010.
She was the wife of the late George O. Steere Sr. Born in Warren, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late James E. and Mary H. (Brobst) Guthrie. Mrs. Steere lived in North Smithfield for many years before moving to the Steere family farm in Chepachet. She attended the Warren Business College and worked at Packard Electric in Warren before meeting and marrying her beloved George 59 years ago.
Mrs. Steere was very active at the Calvary Baptist Church in Providence, was deaconess and president of the Women’s Fellowship of the First Baptist Church in Woonsocket and was deaconess and chaired the Outreach committee at the Free Will Baptist Church in Chepachet. She organized the Music at the Meeting House Concert Series of the Free Will Baptist Church for 20 years. She was corresponding secretary for the American Baptist Women of Rhode Island and was very active in Church Women United. For many years she was on the board of directors at Steere House in Providence and was presented the Outstanding Partner in Philanthropy award in 1997. Mrs. Steere was actively involved in the Steere Family and Roger Williams Family associations.
Kathryn was the loving mother of George O. “Buster” Steere Jr. of Chepachet, Randall W. Steere of Boston, Amey L. Morris of North Smithfield and Nancy A. Thompson of Mesa, Ariz.; the grandmother of Amey, Lori, Mandy, Teresa, Rodney, Matthew, Jeffrey, Heather, Katie, Zachary and Brittany; and the great-grandmother of Sophia, Austin and Brandon. She was the sister of James E. Guthrie Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz., and the late Marguerite E. Bailey.
Relatives and friends are invited to a brief prayer service Thursday at 10 a.m. in the TUCKER-QUINN Funeral Chapel, 643 Putnam Ave., (Route 44) Greenville. Burial will be in Acotes Hill Cemetery, Chepachet. Visitation is Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. All are invited to a Celebration of Life service, Saturday, June 5, 2010, at 9:30 a.m. in the Chepachet Free Will Baptist Church, 1213 Putnam Pike, Chepachet, RI 02814.
