John Allan Reynolds

Bristol, RI - John Allan Reynolds, 50, of 14 Wheeler Avenue, Bristol, RI, died Wednesday, August 24, 2005, at home.

He was the husband of Loreen (Lunsford) Reynolds.

Born in Newport, RI on July 11, 1955, he was the son of Elmer and Marion (Snyder) Reynolds of Newport, RI.

Mr. Reynolds served in the United States Army during peacetime. Upon his retirement from the Army, he went on to serve with the Army National Guard until 1989. John was a pipefitter for several years at the Naval Station on the Navy Base in Newport. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Besides his wife and parents he is survived by his children Jason Reynolds and his wife Joanne of Shelton, CT, and Andrea Hall of Middletown, RI, and his siblings William Reynolds and Elmer Reynolds Jr. both of Middletown, RI, Douglas Reynolds of Florida and Tina Murphy-Reynolds of Newport, RI.

He was the brother of the late Mark Reynolds.

His funeral will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2005, at 10:00 AM in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.

Burial will be in St. Columba's Cemetery in Middletown.

Calling hours will be held on August 26, 2005, from 4-7pm in the Memorial Funeral Home.

Alice Elizabeth Allen

CHELMSFORD, MA - Alice Elizabeth Allen, 86, of 40 Ruthellen Road, Chelmsford, MA, passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2005, at home with her family.

She was the wife of Joseph P. Allen.

Born in Newport, RI on May 13, 1919, she was the daughter of the late William and Elizabeth (James) Barfield.

During WWII she worked at the Newport Torpedo Station on Goat Island. After the war she worked in the Linen Department at Newport Hospital unitl her retirement in 1977. She moved to Chelmsford, MA, where she met and married her husband Joseph. She worked in Chelmsford at the Dunkin Donuts on Rte. 110 for 13 years. Alice (also called “Mama”) was a big collector of clowns, she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, going to Foxwoods with family and friends, singing with the Senior Citizen Choir, playing bingo at the Senior Center, or writing poetry with the Senior Poetry Group at the Chelmsford Library. She has had many poems published in the Chelmsford Library Poetry Books and several of her poems have been printed in the Weekly Chelmsford Independent Newspaper.

Besides her loving husband of 26 years she is survived by her daughter Jacqueline Virgadamo-Reynolds of Chelmsford, MA, her son Louis G. Virgadamo of Portsmouth, RI, and daughter-in-law Patricia (Perry) Virgadamo of Portsmouth, RI, five grandchildren, Barbara J. Pendergast-Thomas of Fall River, MA, Theresa M. Virgadamo of Providence, RI, Judith L. Roberts of Newark, OH, William B. Pendergast of Longwood, FL, Christine E. Corpus of Orland, CA, her sister Emma J. Stone of Smithfield, VA, fourteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews, as well as many friends.

She was the sister of the late Ida O'Fahl, Rose Mitchell, Peter Pike, George Pike and Charles Pike.

Her funeral will be held on Monday, August 29, 2005, at 11:00 AM in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.

Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, August 28, 2005, from 5-8pm in the Memorial Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the LGH Cancer Center, 295 Varnum Avenue, Lowell, MA 01854-2193 or to the VNA Hospice of Greater Lowell, 336 Centeral Street, Lowell, MA 01852.

Gertrude M. Mendes

NEWPORT, RI – Gertrude M. (Gomes) Mendes, 83, of Grand Islander Health Care Center, Middletown, RI, formerly of 170 Park Holm, Newport, RI, died peacefully on Wednesday, August 24, 2005, at the center.

Born in Osterville, Massachusetts, on February 19, 1922, she was the daughter of the late John and Kathleen (Evora) Gomes.

Gertrude owned and operated her own cleaning business Gertrudes Hand Ironing for 20 years, retiring in 1975. She was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church. Gertrude served as a foster grandparent for Child and Family Services of Newport County.

She is survived by her children John W. Mendes of Newport, RI and Linda Mendes Riley of Middletown, RI, her sister Anita Barros of Stoughton, MA, her grandchildren Tara Riley Parks, Keith Riley, Eudonna Riley, Tanya Riley, Chrystal Sears and Chandra Sears and seventeen great grandchildren.

She was the sister of the late Edward Gomes and Elizabeth Andrews.

Her funeral will be held on Monday, August 29, 2005, at 8:00am from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial for St. Joseph’s Church at 9:00am held in Jesus Saviour Church, Broadway and Vernon Avenue, Newport.

Burial will be private.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, August 28, 2005, from 6-9pm in the Memorial Funeral Home.

Thomas B. Archambault

CPO Thomas Burke Archambault, US Navy retired, 76, of 29 Freeborn Street, Newport, RI, died at home on Wednesday, August 24, 2005 after a long and courageous fight with cancer.

He was born in Waterbury, Connecticut on June 23, 1929 to the late Ellen and Thomas D. Archambault.

Tom enlisted in the US Navy at the age of 17 on October 5th, 1946. After attending Hospital Corp school he transferred to the Navy's Dental Service and became a prosthetic technician. His duty stations included the Naval Hospital at Philadelphia and the U.S. Naval Dental Clinics at the US Naval Hospital in Chelsea, Massachusetts, the US Naval Receiving Station, Boston, the US Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and the US Naval Station in Newport. He also served aboard the USS Delta, Yellowstone, Cascade, Amphion, and Arcadia.

After retiring from the Navy in 1967 as a Chief Dental technician, he then entered the Civil Service System in the same capacity at the US Naval Dental Clinic Newport Naval Station from which he retired in 1989 completing almost 43 years of government service.

Tom was a life member of the Middletown Knights of Columbus and the Newport B.O.P.E. Elks Lodge. Prior to suffering a stroke in 1996 he called Bingo on Monday nights at the Elks Lodge for many years. He also was the cook for the Friday night Soup Kitchen at the Salvation Army in Newport from 1989 until 1996 and helped fill the Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets there. He was a member of The Friends of the Newport Public Library where he volunteered for many years under the late Josephine Carson at the group's annual book sale. An avid golfer from the age of 13, he was a past member of The Green Valley Golf Club and served as the president of the Green Valley Golf Association in 1975 and won the Governor's Trophy in 1981. He is a current member of Wanumetonomy Golf and Country Club.

Tom was a loving, caring, and generous person who enjoyed the friendship of many. He was known for his sense of humor, which never failed him throughout his ordeal. His brave and realistic attitude towards his illness sustained his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Florence and his two daughters, Edith Todd of Little Compton and Jane Luderer of Newport. He was the father of the late Thomas C. Archambault. He also leaves three grandchildren, Kendra Scott of Syracuse, NY, Laura Perkins of Middletown, and Eric Todd of Tiverton and a great-granddaughter, Lauren Ferreira of Tiverton.

Burial in Newport Memorial Park will be private with a Memorial Service to be held at the United Congregational Church in Middletown on Saturday, September 10 at 2:30 PM.

Donations in Tom's name may be made to the to United Congregational Church, 524 Valley Rd., Middletown, RI 02842 or to the Visiting Nurse Service of Newport and Bristol Counties Hospice program, P.O. Box 690, Portsmouth RI 02871.

Charles T. Mellekas

Charles Theodore Mellekas, 85, of 9 Cathy Circle, Portsmouth, RI, died Thursday, August 25, 2005, peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family and friends.

He was the devoted husband of Anna (Pappastratis) Mellekas.

Born in Newport, RI on March 29, 1920, he was the son of the late Theodore and Effie (Lewis) Mellekas.

Charlie was a life long resident of Newport County. He was a graduate of Rogers High School, where he enthusiastically participated in all sports. After high school he enlisted in the US Army Air Force during World War II. He served as a Technical Sargent in the Hawaiian Islands.

After returning from the war, Charlie went to barbering school in Boston and also completed a vocational program in accounting. He went to work in his father´s barbershop on Washington Square in Newport. He worked with his family until starting his own business, the Esquire Barber Shop in Middletown, which he operated for over 20 years. Charlie also worked at the Registry of Motor Vehicles in Newport. He concluded his career as the Deputy Court Clerk for the State Supreme Court in Newport and Providence.

Civic engagement was an integral part of Charlie's life. He was currently serving on the Board of Directors at AHEPA and served as past president. He was also past president of the Lion´s Club of Middletown and of St. Spyridon’s Church in Newport. In retirement, he enjoyed serving community youth by reading to students at Melville Elementary School in Portsmouth. Charlie had an unending sense of humor and respect for all people. Most of all he was a family man and making time with his family was a top priority.

Besides his loving wife of 59 years, he is survived by his three children, Phyllis A. Mellekas of Newport, RI, Rita (Mellekas) Rosenberg and her husband Donald Barber both of Ithaca, NY, and William C. Mellekas of Franconia, NH, his brother Harry Mellekas of Cranston, RI, his grandchildren John Asters and Sharon Genga of Newport, RI, Michael Asters of Las Vegas, NV, Dianna Asters of Fall River, MA, Cara Rosenberg of Oneonta, NY, Jenna Rosenberg of Ithaca NY, and Megan Barber of Amherst, MA, his great grandson Christian Genga Asters of Newport, RI, his guardian angel Mary Albrecht of North Woodstock, NH, his sister in-law Melcie and Rev. Harry Biggs of Galt, CA, his brother in-law Jim and Margaret Pappas of Harwick, MA and his godson Ted Cotsoritas of Newport, RI.

He was the father in-law of the late Edward B. Rosenberg and brother of the late John Mellekas, George Mellekas and Irene Pappas.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, August 29, 2005, from 2-4pm and 7-9pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, with a reflection service to be held at 8pm.

His funeral will be held on Tuesday, August 30, 2005, at 9:00am from the Memorial Funeral Home 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Funeral Mass at 10:00am in St. Spyridon's Greek Orthodox Church, 390 Thames Street, Newport.

Burial will be in Middletown Cemetery in Middletown.

Donations in his honor may be made to the Charles T. Mellekas Memorial Scholarship Fund, St. Spyridon's Greek Orthodox Church, 390 Thames Street, Newport, RI 02840.

Esther J. Alexander

MIDDLETOWN, RI - Esther J. (Adamson) Alexander, 92, of 20 High Street, Middletown, RI, formerly of Newport, died Friday, August 26, 2005, at John Clarke Nursing Home, Middletown, RI.

She was the wife of the late James Everett Alexander.

Born in Newport, RI on November 25, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Edwin and Hilda (Schultz) Adamson.

Mrs. Alexander was a sewing instructor for Singer, and a seamstress with Robert Haire Interior Decorators of Newport and Restorations Inc. of Newport. She later worked in the Newport Hospital in the Medical Records department, where she retired after 9 years in 1977. Mrs. Alexander designed and hand made costumes for Dorothy B. Gladding School of Dance, and also designed and custom made slip covers and draperies as her own business over the years. She was a member of Trinity Church, AARP of Newport, and the Edward King House Senior Center. She enjoyed playing bridge at the Edward King House, traveling with her husband and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her son and daughter in-law Everett J. and Lana L. Alexander of Owasso, OK, and her daughter Christa Mortrude of Middletown, RI, five grandchildren Jeffrey E. Mortrude of Westerly, RI, Steven E. Mortrude of Portsmouth, RI, Barbara A. Kirwin of Portsmouth, RI, Eric J. Alexander and Stacy L. Fry both of Owasso, OK and fourteen great grandchildren.

She was the sister of the late Joseph C. Adamson, C. Edwin Adamson, William Adamson and Mabel Adamson.

Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, August 30, 2005, at 11:00AM, in Trinity Church, Queen Anne Square, Newport.

Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery in Portsmouth.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, August 29, 2005, from 4-7pm in the Memorial Funeral Home.

William Sequeira

NEWPORT, RI - William Sequeira, 89 of 5 Tews Court, Newport, RI died Saturday, August 27, 2005at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI.

He was the husband of the late Beatrice Lillian Sequeira.

Born in Tiverton, R.I. on May 3, 1916, he was the son of the late Joseph and Amy (Albert) Sequeira.

Mr. Sequeira had worked as a Landscape Gardener for Lloyd Lawton for over twenty-nine years retiring in 1978.

He enjoyed Hunting, Quahoging and playing cards. Mr. Sequeira was a World War II Army Veteran.

He is survived by two daughters Sharon Sequeira of Lompoc, CA, Freida Thompson of Tucson, Arizona, one stepdaughter Janelle Thompson of Compton, CA, two sisters June Sequeira of Florida, and Mary Sequeira formerly of Fall River, MA, one grandson Jason Thompson of Chandler, AZ, one greatgrandson Jaden Thompson of Chandler, Arizona. Two nephews, Leo Sequeira of Middletown, RI and Victor Moreno

His funeral will be held Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005 at 11:00 am in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.

Burial will be in Braman Cemetery in Newport.

Florence Ashton

PORTSMOUTH, RI – Florence (Taylor) Scharstrom Ashton, 102, of 57 Reise Terrace, Portsmouth, RI, formerly of Cove Street, Portsmouth, RI, died Sunday, August 28, 2005, at home.

She was the wife of the late Squire Ashton and Werner Scharstrom.

Born in Fall River, MA on January 31, 1903, she was the daughter of the late Edwin and Isabel (Hindle) Taylor.

Mrs. Ashton worked in the former Firestone Plant in Fall River, MA, during World War II making the Berage Ballons. She was also a weaver working in several of the Fall River Mills, until retiring in 1968. Mrs. Ashton became a member of St. Mary´s Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, when she came to Portsmouth in 1950. While in Fall River she was a member of the former St. Stephens Episcopal Church. Florence was a charter member of the former Fall River Forever Young Club, and a member of the VASA Swedish Club in Newport. Mrs. Ashton enjoyed traveling with her husband.

She is survived by her daughter Thelma Florence Nuttall of Portsmouth, RI, her granddaughter Gail Christine Woods and her husband Kevin of Mechanicsburg, PA, and Debbie Nuttall Buffum and her husband Thomas of Hawthorne, NY, and her great grandchildren Brent Woods and Erika Woods both of Los Angeles, CA, and Peter Buffum and Emily Buffum both of Hawthorne, NY.

She was the sister of the late Everett Taylor and Mabel Backe.

Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, August 31, 2005, at 1:00 PM in St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 324 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.

Burial will be in St. Mary's Churchyard in Portsmouth, RI.

Calling hours will be held on August 31, 2005, 11:00 to 12:30 in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.
