G. Ruth Westall
NEWPORT, RI – G. Ruth Westall, 85, of 10 Leonard Terrace, a lifelong resident of Newport, RI, died Tuesday morning August 16, 2005, in her beloved home.
Born on February 25, 1920 in Newport, RI, She was the loving and devoted only daughter of the late William B. and Gladys (Borden) Westall.
A 1937 graudate of Rogers High School and a 1941 graduate of Bryant College, where she received her Business Education degree, Ruth touched several generations of Newport´s children, in her role as a teacher in the Business Department and as an outstanding guidance counselor, for over 38 years. As befitting her selfless soul, she retired early to take care of her mother.
She was a former member of the Mosaic Club, the Rhode Island Retired Teachers Association, the Newport County Retired Teachers Association and the Newport Preservation Society. Ruth was an active member of St. George’s Episcopal Church in Newport and was a loyal member of the church’s weekly Anasazi group.
Ruth found the greatest joy in spending time with or talking over the phone to her family, friends-new and life-long, and in narrating the history of Newport as she accompanied many on the tour of the “Ocean Drive”, radiating her joy and enthusiasm as if she was seeing it for the first time. Her warmth, pride, elegance, intelligence, joy and generous spirit will be forever missed. May God bless her beautiful soul.
She is survived by her second cousins Douglass A. Lowe, Richard J. Lowe, Russell T. Lowe, Jr. and several other cousins.
Her funeral will be held on Friday, August 19, 2005, at 11:00 AM in St. George's Episcopal Church, 14 Rhode Island Avenue, Newport.
Burial will be held at 2:00PM in St. Mary's Churchyard in Portsmouth.

Lawrence Dellecese
NEWPORT, RI - Lawrence Dellecese, 60, of 24 Mary Street, Newport, RI, died Monday, August 15, 2005, at home.
Born in New Bedford, MA on June 19, 1945, he was the son of the late James A. and Dorothy (Jefferson) Dellecese.
Larry was a clerk at the New Bedford Boys Club until he moved to Stuart, FL, where he was a clerk in the City Hall, he returned to Newport in 1997. He attended St. Mary´s Catholic Church. Larry was a former member of K of C Council 4201.
He is survived by his siblings Edward C. Dellecese of Bourne, MA, Patricia H. Longley of North Smithfield, RI, and Lorraine D. Carlino of Johnston, RI.
He was the brother of the late James A. Dellecese Jr. of Fall River, MA and Chief of Police Donald R. Dellecese of Tecumseh, MI.
His funeral will be held on Friday, August 19, 2005, at 9:00 AM in St. Mary's Church, Spring Street, Newport.
Burial will be private.

Barbara H. Spotts
CROMWELL, CT – Barbara H. (Allan) Spotts, 84, of One MacDonough Place, Middletown, RI died Monday, August 15, 2005, at Haven Health Care, Cromwell, CT.
She was the wife of the late Joseph J. Spotts.
Born in Newport, RI on, she was the daughter of the late John S. and Jane (Bloomer) Allan.
Mrs. Spotts was a graduate of Rogers High School class of 1938 and was retired from the Naval Underwater Systems Center, Newport, where she was a microfilm processor.
She is survived by two sons Allan D. Spotts and his wife Karen of Cromwell, CT and Stephen J. Spotts and his wife Jacqueline of El Paso, TX, her grandson Timothy A. Spotts, her niece Anne Allan of Middletown, RI, with whom she once lived, and several other nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late John S. Allan Jr. and Jane F. (Allan) McClure.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2005, at 10:00 AM in St. John The Evangelist, 61 Poplar Street, Newport.
Interment will be private.

Dale Allen Hooton
WARREN, RI - Dale Allen Hooton, 42, of 22 Croade Street, Warren, RI, died Sunday, August 14, 2005, at home.
He was the former husband of the late Kaija (Krohn) Hooton who passed away in January.
Born in Providence, RI on February 21, 1963, he was the son of Alexandria (Ferreira) Hooton of Bristol, RI and the late Arthur James Hooton.
Dale was a line foreman for the former Minner Industries, formally Converse Industries in Bristol, RI, until it closed in 1989. He enjoyed being out on the water and fishing.
Besides his mother he is survived by his daughters, Sheri Lyn Hooton and Ashley Ann Hooton of Warren, RI, his grandson Joshua James Hooton Knodel of Warren, RI, and his brother Gary J. Hooton of Rehoboth, MA.
He was the brother of the late Harold Eugene Hooton, Wayne Allen Hooton and Jeffrey Lee Hooton.
His funeral will be held on Friday, August 19, 2005, at 7:30 PM in Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth.
Burial will be private.

Joseph D. Daley
MIDDLETOWN, RI - Joseph Dennis Daley, 56, of 620 Jepson Lane, Middletown, RI died Thursday, August 18, 2005 at home.
Born in Providence, RI on January 28, 1949, he was the son of the late George Eugene and Elizabeth (Armstrong) Daley.
Mr. Daley worked at the James L. Maher Center in Middletown, RI.
He is survived by his brother John Daley of West Warwick, RI, his sister Patricia DiIorio of Cranston, RI, and several nieces, nephews, and grand nephews.

Joseph P.T. Vars
PORTSMOUTH, RI - Joseph P.T. Vars, 74, of 53 Cornell Drive, Portsmouth, RI, formerly of Second Streeet, Newport, RI, died Thursday, August 18, 2005, at the Forest Farm Health Care Center, Middletown, RI.
He was the husband of Angela (Gerbeville) Vars whom he married in 1953.
Born in Providence, RI, on August 8, 1931, he was the son of Clara (Perry) Vars of the John Clarke Nursing Home, Middletown, and the late Harold Saunders Vars.
Mr. Vars was a Newport native. Mr. Vars was a well known Newport businessman and was also active in numerous community affairs for many years. He was a Graduate of Rogers High School, Class of 1949.
Mr. Vars Newport ancestors can be traced to 1677 and his Saunders ancestry to an earlier date making their settlement in what is now call Saunderstown, RI.
He was an active Communicant of St. Mary´s Church serving as a lector for many years. His artful touch was evident on the church´s altar at most important Masses. His extraordinay talent was well recognized and he was called upon to decorate other houses of worship including Jesus Saviour Church as well as many other significant buildings throughout the community.
Mr. Vars was a Veteran of the US Airforce, serving during the Korean Conflict. He attended the Rittner School of Floral Design and subsequently worked at his profession for 50 years, beginning in Florida, then working many years for Holbrow Parker House Florist in Boston, MA. In 1970, Mr. Vars founded The Water´s Edge Flowers in Newport and he was well recognized as one of the most outstanding designers in RI. Upon the sale of his business he continued to contribute his artisitic talents working for the Newport Preservation Society at their many properties and at Hammersmith Farm. Very recently he designed arrangements for Chaves Garden Center.
Mr. Vars was active in many community activities. He and his wife Angela hosted visitors from around the country and world as sponsers of student officers through the Newport War College Council for International Visitors where Mr. Vars served as secretary and also as a board member for many years. They were also host parents to many exchange students through his long membership in the Newport Rotary Club programs. The Vars lived in the Point Section of Newport for many years, where Joseph served as President of the Point Association for 6 years devoting extensive time to their work. He had served as secretary and board member of the Benefactors of the Arts/ Secret Garden Tours. In recent years he served on the board of the Star of the Sea-Harbor House project. He also served as Secretary and President of the Newport Horticultural Society.
Through his work as a floral designer Mr. Vars expressed his love of nature, mankind, and God´s creations.
Besides his wife and mother he is survived by a son Alan C. Vars, daughter in law Melissa Vars, and a grandson Justin Paul Vars all of Portsmouth, RI, two step grandchildren Wendy Dilley of Providence, RI, and Jamie Tant of Portsmouth, VA, two brothers Edmund S. Perry of Middletown, RI, and Joseph H. Vars of Jenson Beach, FL, and a sister Eleanor T. Pore of Riverview, FL, and many nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be held Wednesday, August 24, 2005, at 9:00AM, from the Hambly Funeral Home, “Brick House”, 30 Red Cross Avenue, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM in St. Mary's Church, Spring Street, Newport.
Burial will be in St. Mary´s Churchyard, East Main Road, Portsmouth.

Margaret “Peggy” (Smith) Thomson
PORTSMOUTH, RI – Margaret “Peggy” (Smith) Thomson, 87, of 18 Kensington Avenue, Portsmouth, RI, formerly of 59 Williams Street, Providence, died Friday, August 19, 2005.
She was the wife of Adam Thomson.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, on January 2, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Susan (Duffy) Smith.
Mrs. Thomson had worked as a nursing assistant at the Rhode Island Hospital, Jane Brown Unit, for 13 years, retiring in 1984. She was a Communicant of St. Christopher´s Church in Tiverton. She was a member of the Saint Andrews Society and the Rhode Island Ceiliohe Club. Mrs. Thomson was an avid crocheter who donated her quilts to families all over the world.
Besides her husband of 57 years, she is survived by a son Francis A. Thomson, a daughter in law Julie Thomson, and a grandson Jared A. Thomson all of Portsmouth, RI, a brother Steven Smith and a sister Susan Naughton both of Scotland. She was also the sister of the late Thomas Smith, John Smith, James Smith, William Smith, May Vander, Nellie Hendry, and Sadie McLarnon.
Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, August 23, 2005, at 5:30PM, in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth.
Burial will be private.

Richard Daniel Coogan
MIDDLETOWN, RI – Captain Richard Daniel Coogan, US Navy retired, 75, of Middletown, RI, died at Newport Hospital on Sunday, August 21, 2005.
He was born on December 3, 1929, in Fall River, Massachusetts to the late William and Elizabeth Coogan and is pre-deceased by his older brother William Coogan II, who died as a US Naval aviator in World War II.
He attended Monsignor Coyle High School in Somerset, Massachusetts and graduated in 1948. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1953 and received a commission into the Untied States Navy. Captain Coogan served in numerous duty stations and held several commands including: USS Botetourt (AP-136), USS Osterstetter (DER-244), USS Rhodes (DER-384), USS Richard S. Edwards (DD-950), USS Parsons (D-949), US Naval War College Staff, Commanding Officer COMRIVDIV 54 (Vietnam), Commanding Officer USS Samuel B. Roberts (DD-823), Exectuive Officer and Commanding Officer US Naval Destroyer School, Commodore NAVSPECWARGRU 2, Chief of Staff US Forces Korea, Dean of Administration US Naval War College.
During his tenure in the Navy Captain Coogan earned a post graduate degree at the Navy Post Graduate School in Monterey and a graduate degree in Marine Affairs from the University of Rhode Island. His Navy commendations include the Silver Star, Bronze Star with Combat V and Purple Heart.
After retiring from the Navy in 1984, Captain Coogan worked for several years with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management. His final employment was with the Middletown School Department for 8 years ending in 1995.
Captain Coogan spent many years in the early 1970´s as the President of the Middletown Little League ensuring that every child had the opportunity to participate.
Captain Coogan is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jacqueline M. Coogan, his sister Barbara Santerre of Tucson, AZ, by his two sons Nicholas and William, and their wives Anne and Elizabeth. In addition Captain Coogan is survived by seven grandchildren who adored their Grandfather, Thomas, Bennet, Daniel, Harrison, Molly, Weston and Elizabeth Coogan.
A Celebration and Remembrance of Captain Coogan’s life will be held at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI, on Friday, August 26, 2005, from 4-7pm. A Memorial service will be held at St. Columba Berkeley Memorial Chapel, 55 Vaucluse Avenue, Middletown, RI on Saturday morning August 27, 2005, at 10:00.

Nancy J. Nunes
NEWPORT, RI - Nancy J. (Bliven) Nunes, 73, of 87 Girard Avenue, Newport, RI, formerly of Third Street, Newport, RI, died Tuesday, August 23, 2005, at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI.
She was the wife of the late John Joseph Nunes.
Born in Newport, RI on August 1, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Mildred Bliven.
Nancy was a native Newporter and a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
She is survived by her children John J. Nunes Jr. of Newport, RI, Elmer Nunes of Portsmouth, RI, and Debra L. Nunes of Portsmouth, RI, her sister Myrtle Bonus of Newport, RI, her grandchildren Elmer Nunes Jr., Jonathan Nunes, Elizabeth Nunes Garrido and Sarah Nunes, and six great grandchildren.
She was the mother of the late Joseph A. Nunes.
Her funeral will be held on Friday, August 26, 2005, at 11:00 AM in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.
Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.
