Muriel Lewis Murphy

PORTSMOUTH, RI - Muriel (Valentine) Murphy, 71, died unexpectedely Tuesday, September 27, 2005.

Born in Pawtucket, RI, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Muriel (Babb) Valentine.

A career nurse, Muriel worked at the Eye & Ear Infirmary in Boston, Galluadet College and as a private duty nurse for many years in Jamestown. Muriel will be remembered for her love of life, her independence and her love for animals.

She is survived by two sons Jeremiah D. Murphy of Portsmouth, RI, Paul J. Murphy of San Jose, CA, and a daughter Cornelia V. Murphy of Portland, OR, a brother Paul Valentine of Newport, RI, and two grandsons Harry Murphy and Gus Murphy both of San Jose, CA. She was also the sister of the late Harriet Valentine Gelfuso.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2005, at 11:00AM, in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.

Burial will be private.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, September 30, 2005, from 4-8PM, in the Memorial Funeral Home.

Renton Christopher Rawnsley

NEWPORT, RI - Renton Christopher Rawnsley, 55 of 3 Morgan Street, Newport, RI died suddenly Thursday, September 29, 2005.

He was the husband of Sally (Riley) Rawnsley.

Born in Providence, RI on July 31, 1950, he was the son of Agnes (Fitzgibbons) Rawnsley and the late Bob J. Rawnsley.

Mr. Rawnsley was a Marine Veteran who served in Vietnam from 1967-1970. Upon his return home, he worked as a guard at the ACI from 1970 to 1975. He then graduated in 1978 with a B.S. in Business Administration from McKendere College, Missouri. He then re-enlisted in the Army and retired as a Sargeant First Class in May 1995. He was the recipient of two Meritorious Service Medals. He was presently working at IMS (International Manufacturing Services) in Portsmouth. Mr. Rawnsley was a communicant of St. Lucy´s Parish and enjoyed reading and spending time with his loving family.

He is survived by his beloved wife Sally Rawnsley of Newport, RI, and his mother Agnes Rawnsley of Johnston, RI. He was the loving father of Christopher John Rawnsley of Warren, RI, Brian Jude Rawnsley and Sarah Rawnsley both of Newport, RI. Renton is also survived by his brothers Bobby W. Rawnsley of Johnston, RI, Thomas Rawnsley of Providence, RI, Marty Rawnsley and his wife Christine of Exeter, RI, and two sisters Norah (Rawnsley) Bradbury and her husband Frank of Johnston, RI, Agnes Rawnsley Johnston, RI, he was the grandfather to Christopher Rawnsley, and Thomas and Patrick Connel and several several nieces and nephews.

His funeral will be held on Tuesday, October 4, 2005, at 8:00AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9:00 AM in St. Lucy's Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown. Burial will be in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, October 3, 2005, from 5-8pm in the Memorial Funeral Home.

Memorial donations may be made to The Newport Public Library, 300 Spring Street, Newport, RI 02840.

Mary Joan Jurista

PORTSMOUTH, RI - Mary Joan (Gibbons) Jurista, 87, of 125 Quaker Lane, Portsmouth, RI formerly of 110 Orchard Avenue, Middletown, died Saturday, October 1, 2005, at the Forest Farm Health Care Center, Middletown, RI.

She was the wife of the late Edward Andrew Jurista.

Born in Fall River, MA, on January 25, 1918, she was the daughter of the late John and Anna (Donovan) Gibbons.

Mrs. Jurista was a Communicant of St. Mary´s Church in Newport. She had been the President and member of the 10 O´clock Strikers Club and a member of the Middletown Senior Citizens Center. She was an avid reader and baker.

She is survived by two sons Edward John Jurista of Lindenhurst, IL, and Alan Peter Jurista of Brockton, MA, four daughters Mary Anne Sullivan and Nancy Ellen Ardito both of Portsmouth, RI, Janet Marie Jurista-Ingram of Lowell, MA, and Eileen Louise Augustus of Tyngsboro, MA, three sisters Ella Gibbons of Portsmouth, RI, Jean Lockhart of Manchester, OH, and Louise Cranshaw of Mabank, TX, eight grandchildren Susan Sisson, Stephen Sullivan, Scott Sullivan, Todd Ardito, Dawn Jurista, Denise Ferguson, Allison Augustus, and James Augustus, and nine great grandchildren.

She was the sister of the late Edward Gibbons, John Gibbons, Charles Gibbons, Catherine Foy, Ann Hartman, and Ruth Anderson, and the grandmother of the late Stacy Sullivan.

Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, October 5, 2005, at 8:00AM, from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00AM, in St. Mary's Church, Spring Street, Newport.

Burial will be in St. Columba's Cemetery, Brown’s Lane, Middletown.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, October 4, 2005 from 4-8PM, in the Memorial Funeral Home.

Shirley A. Silvia

PORTSMOUTH, RI - Shirley A. (Peary) Silvia, 76, of 37 Ladeira Avenue, Portsmouth, RI died Saturday October 1, 2005 at New England Medical Center, Boston.

She was the wife of Douglas Silvia of Portsmouth, RI.

Born in Brooklyn, NY on September 7, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Violet (Crane) Peary.

Mrs. Silvia was a founding member and past president of the Friends of Plum Beach Lighthouse. In May of 2005 when the renovations were completed, the Friends of Plum Beach Lighthouse honored Shirley with the John Ganze Award, named after the last lighthouse keeper at Plum Beach Lighthouse. She was instrumental in the preservation and restoration of the lighthouse. Mrs. Silvia was also a charter member and past president of the Ida Lewis Doll Club of Newport and ran a doll repair shop from her home. She was also a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Middletown.

Besides her husband she is survived by her children John Zabriskie of Hopkinton, RI, Faith Zabriskie of Bedford, TX, a step-son Douglas R. Silvia of Proctorville, VT, and four grandchildren.

Her funeral will be held on Thursday October 6, 2005 from the Connors Funeral Home 55 West Main Road Portsmouth at 10:00am followed by a funeral service at 11:00 in the Calvary United Methodist Church, at the corner of Turner & Wyatt Road, Middletown, RI.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday October 5, 2005 from 5PM-8PM in the Connors Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to The Friends of Plum Beach Lighthouse Inc., PO Box 1041, North Kingstown, RI 02852.

Louis Joseph Durand Jr.

Louis Joseph Durand Jr., 43, of Middletown, died June 19 1998 at Newport Hospital.

He was the son of Zulmira (Almedia) Durand and the late Louis Joseph Durand.

Mr. Durand Jr. was in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Era from 1974 to June of 1975. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service from 1976 to 1977 in Providence and Fall River. Mr. Durand Jr. was an NETC firefighter from 1978 until his retirement in 1994. He graduated in 1973 from Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School. He played at Cardines Field and was an avid motorcyclist and billard player in Newport and Fall River.

He is preceded in death by his brother Gregory Paul Durand.

He is survived by his daughter Lauren Durand, his mother Zulmira (Almedia) Durand of Somerset, MA, his siblings Edward Durand of Florida and Lorraine Malcuch of Somerset.

Harold Uveges

Middletown, RI – Harold “Jack” Uveges, 88, of Middletown, died Wednesday, October 5, 2005, at the Newport Hospital, Newport, RI.

He was the husband of Helena L. (Souza) Uveges.

Born in Saratoga Springs, NY, on July 23, 1917, he was the son of the late John and Bertha (Sellar) Uveges.

Mr. Uveges was a Veteran of the US Navy, serving during WWII and Korea, retiring as a TMC, after 20 years. He was a life member of the Fleet Reserve Association Branch #19, where he served as Past President and received the Shipmate of the Year Award in 1985-1986, and a life member of the Elks Lodge #104, where he served as Past Trustee from 1967-1976, as well as the Chairman for several committees. Mr. Uveges was Elk of the Year in 1970 and 1971. He was also a member of the FOPA #8. Mr. Uveges helped to build the first Little League Field in 1953 at the corner of Girard and Maple Avenue´s, Newport. He had been a coach of the CPO team and later served as the Vice President of the Middletown Little League.

Besides his wife he is survived by his son John M. Uveges of New Jersey, his daughter Tracy Ann Goodwin of California, his brother Carl Uveges of Virgina, four grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

Donations may be made in his memory to the Elks National Foundation, Care of BPO Elks #104, 141 Pelham Street, Newport, RI, 02840.

Mr. Uveges was an honorary founder of this foundation.

At Mr. Uveges request, there will be no services.

Anne Patricia Douglas

MIDDLETOWN, RI - Anne Patricia Douglas, 47, of 116 Prospect Avenue, Middletown, RI died Wednesday, October 5, 2005 at home.

Born in Newport, RI on May 10, 1958, she was the daughter of Robert I. Douglas and the late Helen (Curran) Douglas.

Miss Douglas worked as a store manager at the former So-Fro Fabric Store in Middletown. She then worked for Fleet Bank for 17 years. Miss Douglas was a graduate of Middletown High School. She attended URI and graduated in 1979. She was a member of the URI Alumni Association.

She is survived by her father Robert I. Douglas of Middletown, RI, and her aunt Shirley Douglas of New York, NY.

Her funeral will be held on Tuesday October 11, 2005 at 8:00am from The Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, followed by a Mass at 9:00am in St. Mary's Church, Spring Street, Newport, RI.

Burial will follow in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown, RI.

Memorial donations may be made in her memory to The Middletown Rescue Wagon Fund, 239 Wyatt Road, Middletown, RI 02842.

Daniel Joseph Sullivan

BRISTOL, RI - Daniel Joseph Sullivan, 95, of the Rhode Island Veterans Home, Bristol, RI, formerly of Appleby Street, Newport, RI, died Sunday, October 9, 2005, at the Rhode Island Veterans Home, Bristol, RI.

Born in Newport, RI, on January 12, 1910, he was the son of the late Daniel J. and Josephine (Kane) Sullivan.

Mr. Sullivan had worked as an appliance repairman at the former Sullivan´s Hardware Store on Broadway, in Newport, for over 20 years, retiring in 1960. He was a Veteran of the US Army, serving during WWII in the European Theatre.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late William Sullivan, James Sullivan, Helen Parr, Mary Martin, Anne Millard, and Kay Doiron.

Funeral services and burial will be private.

Ruth Deschenes

BRISTOL, RI - Ruth (Greene) Deschenes, 79, of 274 1/2 Wood Street, Bristol, RI, formerly of Fall River, MA, died Thursday, October 13, 2005, at home.

She was the wife of the late Philip A. Deschenes.

Born in Fall River, MA, on June 2, 1926, she was the daughter of the late John S. and Catherine (Harrington) Greene.

Mrs. Deschenes had worked for 13 years as a phone operator for NE Tel & Tel and in the shipping department for Ames Department Store, in Fall River, MA. She also worked along with her husband, as a real estate broker at Deschenes Real Estate. She was a member of the Elks Auxillary. Mrs. Deschenes was an avid reader.

She is survived by two sons Philip D. Deschenes of North Kingstown, RI, and David Deschenes of Norwalk, CT, three daughters Mary E. Deschenes of Bristol, RI, Michelle Hotchkiss of Old Orchard Beach, ME, and Eileen Almeida of Portsmouth, RI, her brother John C. Greene of Ivoryton, CT, eight grandchildren Erin Cassese, Jacqueline Rice, Allyson Quay, Thomas Metcalfe, Sean Almeida, Nicole Almeida, Arianna Almeida, and Olivia Deschenes, and two great grandchildren Matthew Laughton and Kristen Quay.

She was the sister of the late Robert Greene and Elizabeth Smith.

Her funeral will be held on Monday, October 17, 2005, at 8:00 AM from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 AM in Our Lady Of Mt. Carmel Church, 141 State Street, Bristol.

Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery in Fall River.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, October 16, 2005, from 5-8PM in the Connors Funeral Home.

Thomas P. Farrea

NEWPORT, RI - Thomas P. Farrea, 81 of 663 East Road, Tiverton, RI, formerly of Jepson Lane Middletown, RI, died Wednesday, October 12, 2005 at Newport Hospital.

Born in Middletown, RI on February 1, 1924 he was the son of the late Manuel and Anna (Moitoza) Farrea.

Mr. Farrea was a farmer who owned a dairy farm on Jepson Lane for most of his life. Most recently he had a smaller farm in Tiverton. Mr. Farrea also worked for the Local Laborers Union 673 in Middletown for twenty-five years.

He is survived by his sons Thomas Farrea of Portsmouth, RI, Gary Farrea of Riverside, RI, and Keith Farrea of Portsmouth, RI, his sister Gertrude Correira of Middletown, RI, and five grandchildren Andrew, James, Sydney, Stephen, and Kerry Farrea.

He is preceded in death by his siblings George Farrea, Philomena “Fanny” Neely, Manuel Perry and John Farrea, Elizabeth Viera, Mary Matos, Marianna Norbury, Irene O'Neil, Roslind Kalwak, Laura DeRensis, Delphine Carr and Anna Gomes.

His funeral will be held on Saturday October 15, 2005 at 11:00AM in The Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.

Burial will be in St. Columba's Cemetery in Middletown.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday morning October 15, 2005 from 9-11:00am in the Connors Funeral Home.
