Samuel J. Cashman Jr., 80

Samuel J. Cashman Jr., 80, of Coronado Street, died Aug. 24, 2005 at South County Hospital after a long illness.

He was the husband of the late Mary (Cavanaugh) Cashman for 32 years.

Born in Providence, a son of the late Samuel J. and Irene Galligan) Cashman, he lived in Cumberland before moving to Jamestown 12 years ago.

Mr. Cashman was a graduate of Hope High School.

He attended Brown University and graduated from Boston University.

A Naval aviator, he served in World War II.

Mr. Cashman was a teacher and department chairman for the math and science department at Foxboro High School.

He also was a hematologist at Rhode Island Hospital before retiring. He was an Eagle Scout of Troop 82, Providence.

Mr. Cashman was also a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Power Squadron.

He was a communicant of St. Mark Church.

He is survived by his four children, Michaeleen A. Farrell of Central Falls, Timothy S. Cashman of Wakefield, Mark P. Cashman of Lebanon, Tenn., Maura C. Curran of Scituate, Mass.; and eight grandchildren. He was the brother of the late John C. Cashman.

His Funeral was held Aug. 27 from the Fagan-Quinn Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mark Church, Jamestown.

Burial with full military honors was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Providence.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Association, 222 Richmond Street, Providence, RI 02903, will be appreciated.

Howard Wallace Harding Jr., 78

Howard Wallace Harding Jr., 78, of Walcott Avenue died July 27, 2005 at home after a 10-year struggle with cancer.

He was the husband of Mary Brooks (Mengert) Harding.

Sally Speare Lutyens, 77

Sally Speare Lutyens, 77, compos-er, writer, artist, teacher and creative spirit died peacefully on July 22, 2005 at her home in Falmouth, Maine, after a two month battle with cancer.

Sonia Cogswell Sullivan, 48

Sonia “Auntie” Cogswell Sullivan, 48, a lifelong resident of 140 Frigate St., died Aug. 15, 2005 in Texas, after a two-year illness.

She was the daughter of the late Laura and “Bud” Cogswell.

She is survived by her sister, Paula C. Hilton, and her husband, David P. Hilton of North Kingstown and Texas; her sister Carolyn Smith and husband Jerry Smith of Ohio; and her “soul sister,” Joyce Keimig of Texas; a niece, Lani Hilton Kelley and husband Jerry Kelley of Westerly; great nephews, Blake, Evan and Jarrett Kelley; nephew, Darin D. Hilton and his wife Barbara K. Hilton of Texas; great nephew, David Paul, and great niece, Anna Hilton; an uncle Karl P. Hilton, and many cousins.

She is survived by her companions Sierra, Panda and Sergei.

A remembrance celebration of her life will be announced at a later date.

Andrew Bloschichak Jr., 79

Andrew Bloschichak Jr., 79, of Lake Drive, North Kingstown, a 22year career man for the U.S. Navy and retired civil service foreman at Quonset Point for 20 years, died Monday, Sept. 5, 2005 at Kent County Memorial Hospital.

He was the husband of the late Eleanor D. (Armstrong) Bloschichak.

Born in New Boston, Pa., a son of the late Andrew and Mary (Bates) Bloschichak, he lived in Jamestown before moving to North Kingstown in 1983.

Mr. Bloschichak was a Navy veteran of World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam War.

He was the father of Thomas M. Bloschichak, Michael D. Bloschichak, Peggy L. Fultz-Resner, and Pennie D. McGhen.

He was the brother of John, Steven, Peter, Paul and Maryann Bloschichak.

He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.

His funeral service was held Sept. 9 from the Fagan-Quinn Funeral Home, 825 Boston Neck Rd., North Kingstown.

Burial, with full military honors, was in the RI Veterans Cemetery in Exeter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301, Attn: Gift Processing Department.

James S. Pearson, 48

James S. Pearson, 48, of Umiak Avenue, died Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005 at the home of his sister in Jamestown.

Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Joseph R. and Anna (Cerretto) Pearson.

Mr. Pearson is survived by his brothers and sisters, Joseph R. Pearson, Richard E. Pearson, Patricia N. Sullivan and Jane A. Kidd, all of Warwick, Donald Pearson in Utah, Donna Neri of Jamestown, Joanna Moore of Bristol and Pauline D. Simone of Pawtucket.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated this Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Mark Church, 60 Narragansett Ave.

Burial will be in St. Mark Cemetery.

Alice K. Spong, 85

Former Jamestown resident Alice K. Spong, 85, died Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005 at the Rainbow Nursing Home in Peabody, Mass.

She was the wife of the late John Y. Spong who passed away in February of 1999.

Born in Jamestown, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Anna Belle (Arnold) Kirchner.

She lived in Jamestown until 1998.

She was a volunteer for the Jamestown Ambulance Corps and worked for the Jamestown library for many years.

She was also a member of the St. Matthews Altar Guild.

She is survived by a son, John Y. Spong Jr. and his wife Linda of South Hamilton, Mass.; and a daughter, Ann Szmania, wife of Joe Szmania of Bethlehem, Pa.; a sister, Mildred Ladd, of Brentwood, N.H.; and four grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Roger and Chuck, a sister Louise Trytek, and two grandchildren.

Robert David Morris, 63

Robert David Morris Sr., 63, of Midlothian, Va., died Monday, Nov. 28, 2005.

He was the son of the late Joseph S. and Ernestine Morris of Jamestown, R.I.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Suzie; two sons, Robert Jr. and his wife, Beth, of Midlothian, and Michael and his wife, Alexandra, of Yardley, Pa.; three grandsons, Robert III, William, and Michael Jr.; two sisters, Linda Morris of Newport, and Wendy Fargnoli of Jamestown; one bother, David Morris of Jamestown; and many other nieces, nephews, and friends.

Mr. Morris was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a retired vice president of sales for U.S. Structures, Inc.

He was a very active member of St. Mathias Episcopal Church in Midlothian, Va., and an avid golfer and sports enthusiast.

A memorial service will be held this Saturday, Dec. 10, at 11a.m. at St. Mathias Episcopal Church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Mathias Episcopal Church Music Fund, 11300 W. Huguenot Rd., Midlothian, VA 23113.

Janet Walls, 70

Conanicus Avenue died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2005 at Village House in Newport.

She was the wife of Alden R. “Skip” Walls Jr. for 51 years.

Donald W. Cota, 62

Donald W. “Commander Cota” Cota, 62, of Southwest Avenue died Dec. 7, 2005 at South County Hospital.

He was a former commercial fisherman.

Nannie T. Busby, 91

Nannie T. Busby, 91 Nannie T. Busby, 91, died Nov. 4, 2005 in Melbourne, Fla.

She was the wife of the late Albert G. Busby for 43 years.

John A. ‘Jack’ Civic, 80

John A. “Jack” Civic, 80, of Ella Terrace, Castle Hill, Newport, passed away at home with his family by his side on Nov. 15, 2005.

He was the husband of Audrey (Kenyon) Civic for 55 years.

Evelyn A. Turcone, 91

Evelyn A. (Sarcione) Turcone, 91, of North Providence, died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005 at home.

She was the wife of Michael Turcone.

They had been married for 65 years.

Alice Eva Dunlevy, 67

Alice Eva Dunlevy, 67, of 25 Bay St., died Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2005, in her home.

Leland Lorenzen, 78

Leland Lorenzen, 78, died Sept. 7, 2005. He was born Dec. 28, 1926, in Wichita, Kans., and lived in rural Galva since 1967.

Howard Wallace Harding Jr., 78

Howard Wallace Harding Jr., 78, of Walcott Avenue died July 27, 2005 at home after a 10-year struggle with cancer.

He was the husband of Mary Brooks (Mengert) Harding.

Born in Brockton, Mass., he was the son of Howard W. and Lillian Shores Harding.

He graduated from Brockton High School in 1944 and attended MIT, but left to enter the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1945.

He served briefly on a Liberty ship in the Merchant Marine service, then returned to MIT.

He transferred to Babson College and graduated in 1952.

During the Korean War he joined the U.S. Navy and was a lieutenant junior grade on a seaplane tender in Japan.

Upon leaving the Navy, he worked as a sales engineer for various companies before becoming vice president then president of Lodding Engineering Co. in Auburn, Mass.

When Thermo Electron Corp. acquired Lodding, he continued as assistant to the president, retiring in 1983.

A year-round resident of Jamestown since 1973, he was an enthusiastic sailor, and after retirement volunteered with the Jamestown Historical Society, acting as curator of its historic windmill and overseeing a major restoration of the mill in 2000.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Emily B. Harding, Mary A. Dombroski, Sarah M. Harding, and four grandchildren.

Friends are invited to a memorial gathering at the Conanicut Yacht Club on Sept. 10 at 5:30 p.m.

Gifts in his memory may be made to the Jamestown Historical Society Windmill Fund, P.O. Box 156, Jamestown, RI 02835.

Martha G. O’Hara, 86

Martha G. O’Hara, 86, of Jamestown, died Jan. 3, 2006 at the Scallop Shell Nursing Home in South Kingstown.

She was the wife of the late Myles A. O’Hara.

Born in Saunderstown, she was a daughter of the late Reuben and Martha (Gardiner) Garlick.

A homemaker, she was a resident of Jamestown since 1930.

She is survived by her two daughters Martha G. Robinson of Saunderstown and Catherine E. Kemper of Southern Shores, N.C.; three sisters Elsie Andrew of Cumberland, Ruth V. Baker of Newport; and Barbara McFee of Wakefield; four grandchildren and a great grandson.

Her services were held on Monday, Jan. 9, at the Columbarium Chapel of the R.I. Veterans Memorial Cemetery, South County Trail, in Exeter.

In lieu of flowers, send gifts in her memory to the Special Olympics, 33 College Hill Rd., Warwick, RI 02886.

Price Wetherill Slattery, 46

Price Wetherill Slattery, 46, of Jamestown, died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006 at home.

Born in Monmouth County, N.J., he was a son of Martha (Taylor) Slattery of Montgomery, Ala., and the late William J. Slattery Jr. of Jamestown.

Mr. Slattery was a fisherman and captained the fishing vessel Charlotte G and other fishing boats owned by Drag-on Fisheries.

He attended North Kingstown High School and the culinary arts program at the Rhode Island School of Design.

An avid collector of military memorabilia, he supported several military-interest and police organizations.

He enjoyed cooking and watching his extensive video collection, especially the cartoons.

Besides his mother, he leaves his longtime companion of Joanne Cooney; a daughter Jessica L. Babbitt of Charlestown; two brothers, William Slattery of Los Angeles, Calif., and Michael C. Slattery of Jamestown; a niece Rachael C. Slattery of Jamestown; a nephew John P. Slattery of Newport; his step-mother, Rosemary Enright of Jamestown; and his beloved granddaughter, Jasmine R. Babbitt. He was the brother of the late John T. Slattery.

A celebration of his life will take place this Saturday, Jan. 21, from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Portuguese American Citizens’ Club, Narragansett Avenue, Jamestown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of RI, 1150 Pontiac Avenue, Cranston, RI 02910, will be appreciated.

James W. Smith, 69, of Pemberton Avenue died Friday, Dec. 30, 2005 at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital in North Providence. He was the husband of Mary Grace (Vietri) Smith.

Florence (Andrade) Brazil, 87

Florence (Andrade) Brazil, 87, formerly of Grinnell Street, died Friday, Dec. 30, 2005 at Cedar Crest Sub Acute & Rehabilitation Center in Cranston. She was the wife of the late John E. Brazil.

Genny (Shumchenia) Testa, 58, of Frigate Street died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005. She was the wife of Michael Testa.

Joseph DeCubellis, 61

Joseph DeCubellis, 61, of North Main Road passed away peacefully at home Monday, Jan. 10, 2006 with his family by his side. For 37 years, he was the beloved husband of Kathleen Doreen (Manning) DeCubellis.

Mary Dutra Sylvia, 95

Mary Dutra Sylvia, 95, of 30 Lawn Ave. died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006 at South County Nursing Center surrounded by family, friends, and her canine companion, Apple Jack. She was the wife of the late Mike Sylvia for 62 years.
