GABRIEL QUINTAL

Gabriel Quintal, 83, of 176 Shore Road, Westerly, formerly of Stewart Drive, Westerly, and husband of the late Florence (Tamer) Quintal, died Dec. 25, 2003, at the Watch Hill Manor.

Mr. Quintal is survived by three daughters, Barrie Grossi of Westerly, Kathryn Chester of Providence, and Carolyn Farmer of Albuquerque, N.M.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time. The Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St., Westerly, is in charge of arrangements.

JEFFREY M. WETMORE

Jeffrey M. Wetmore, 41, of Westerly died unexpectedly at The Westerly Hospital on Dec. 25, 2003.

He was born in Westerly, son of the late Donald and Fay (Green) Wetmore, and had been employed as a cook for various restaurants in the area. He was an avid fisherman, boater and woodworker who had a generous heart, was greatly loved and will sadly missed by his friends and family.

He leaves three sisters, Judith Nelson of Middletown, Conn., Donna Farris of Rocky Hill, Conn., and Cynthia Krueger of Jewitt City, Conn.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be omitted.

A funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Central Baptist Church, Elm Street, Westerly. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

The Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly, RI, is in charge of arrangements.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name be made to The Westerly WARM shelter, 56 Spruce St., Westerly, RI, 02891.

FRANK B. DIGANGE

Frank B. Digange, beloved husband of Rose (Toscano) Digange of Center Street, Westerly, passed away after a brief illness at The Westerly Hospital on Dec. 27, 2003. He was 58.

He was born May 12, 1945 in Westerly, the son of the late Angelo and Mary (Parrilla) Digange. Mr. Digange was a meatcutter at Foxwoods Resort Casino; prior to that, he was employed at Almac's Supermarket for 26 years.

He was a member of the Westerly Lodge of Elks, BPOE No. 678. He was also a member of the Calabrese Society, a communicant of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, and an avid Yankees fan.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Lauren Digange of Boston and Dana Digange of New York City; a sister, Grace McCloskey of Lafayette, La.; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be in the Church of the Immaculate Conception Tuesday at 10 a.m. Visiting hours will be omitted.

The family requests that donations be made in his memory to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute/Thoracic Oncology, 44 Binney St., Boston, MA 02115.

Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home at 59 Spruce St. is in charge of arrangements.

JAMES J. LEVANTI JR.

James J. Levanti, Jr., 62, of Torrington, Conn., has died at his home.

He was born in Westerly, son of the late James J. Levanti, Sr., and the late Anna (Petrowski) Levanti.

Mr. Levanti had been employed as a chef at Foxwoods Resort Casino and retired in the late 1990s. He previously worked as manager of the Elm Tree Inn in Pawcatuck. He was an avid race horse fan and owned his own horses.

Survivors include his five daughters, Lori Young of Westerly, Lisa Levanti of Maine, Linda Burgess of Oklahoma, Leanna Cozzolino of Pawcatuck and Susan Fallon of Providence; two sisters, Rosanne Cullen and Barbara Levanti, both of Pawcatuck; and eight grandchildren.

Calling hours will be omitted.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at 1 p.m. in Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

BARBARA A. MOOSEY

Barbara A. (Berlam) Moosey, 80, formerly of West Broad Street, Pawcatuck, and South Windsor, Conn., died Jan. 8, 2004, in the Rockville General Hospital, Rockville, Conn. She was the widow of the late Walter T. Moosey, who died in 1978.

Mrs. Moosey was born in Providence, daughter of the late Saba and Haseba Berlam and had been employed as a nurse's aide at The Westerly Hospital until retiring in the mid-1990s. She was a communicant of St. Michael Church in Pawcatuck, and was formerly very active doing volunteer work at the Pawcatuck Little League. She had also bowled in area leagues. She was a loving and dedicated mother and grandmother. She was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II.

Survivors include a son, Thomas P. Moosey of Southbury, Conn.; four daughters, Barbara A. Hayes of Pasadena, Calif., Linda M. Nott of Vernon, Conn., Janet M. Sicard of Westerly, and Sharon M. Parker of Griswold, Conn.; 13 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by four brothers, Budea Berlam, William Berlam, Thomas Berlam and Joseph Berlam; and one sister, Emma F. Berlam.

Calling hours will be held Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. in Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Michael Church, Liberty Street, Pawcatuck. There will be no procession from the funeral. home. Interment will be in St. Michael Cemetery, Pawcatuck.

JOHN J. THOMPSON

John J. Thompson of 46 Highland Avenue, a civic, educational, labor, religious and political leader in Westerly and throughout Rhode Island for 40 years - and beloved husband of Gail (Somerset) Thompson - passed away on March 12, 2004, at his home after a courageous seven-year battle with cancer.

Born in Westerly on March 13, 1942, the son of the late John J. and Winifred (Brennan) Thompson, he became a teacher in the Westerly Public Schools following his graduation from the University of Rhode in 1964. He taught at the high school until 1994. He launched the "Problems in Democracy" course at Westerly High School and was personally active in local and state political affairs. He was elected and served as State Representative, District 50, Westerly from 1998 to 2002. In the legislature, he concentrated his efforts on health care issues including mandatory group insurance coverage of early cancer detection screening. He previously served as chairman of the Westerly Citizens Advisory Committee; chairman of the Westerly Charter Revision Committee and as a member and clerk of the Westerly School Committee. He was also a long time member of the Westerly Democratic Town Committee.

Mr. Thompson was an accomplished and innovative labor leader, he served as president of the Rhode Island Education Association, 1970-71, the last person to hold the position while simultaneously serving as a full-time teacher.

His term was marked by efforts to increase the political action activities of the union including organizational activities to provide candidates endorsed by the union with trained campaign volunteers and a statewide voter registration drive which significantly increased the number of registered voters.

Locally, he held office in the Westerly Teacher Association for most of his 30-year teaching career. During the period of 1980 to 1988 he was President of the association and collaborated with his former teaching colleague, School Superintendent Salvatore Augeri, to create the National Education Association/Westerly Learning Laboratory Project. It was one of the initial four Learning Laboratories in the country and piloted programs in shared decision making, technology education and continued professional development.

After his retirement from teaching, Mr. Thompson served as a consultant in strategic planning for educational and non-profit organizations, including the Westerly Public Library and The Prout School. He was also a regional admissions counselor for Alfred University. He was a founding board member of the Westerly Education Endowment Fund; a member of the Board of Stewards of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, member of the Westerly Lodge #678 Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He served as lay director of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Youth Organization and was a communicant of St. Vincent's Church, Bradford.

He is survived by his wife, Gail (Somerset) Thompson; his daughter Delaine M. Wright and son of in-law, Mark Wright of Westerly; his daughter Kimberly A. Tesseo of Norwich, Connecticut; his brother and sister-in-law, Richard B. and Carol Thompson; and sister and brother-in-law Susan and Peter Cornell; his mother-in-law, Eva Somerset; and sisters-in-law, Donna Barrett, Kathleen Friedel, Janice Somerset, and Judith Bigouette; as well as several nieces and nephews. Donations in his memory can be made to the NEARI Children's Fund, 99 Bald Hill Road, Cranston, RI 02920. Calling hours will be held Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Gaffney-Dolan Funeral, Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at St. Vincent de Paul Church, Bradford. Interment will be in River Bend Cemetery, Westerly.

ROBERT G. DUHAMEL

Robert G. Duhamel Sr., 82, of 57 Foster Drive, Charlestown, died peacefully Tuesday morning, June 8, 2004, at the Linn Health Care in East Providence.

Mr. Duhamel was born in East Providence on Dec. 18, 1921, the son of the late Edward C. and Harriet (Barnes) Duhamel.

Robert was a carpenter working in the model shop at Electric Boat in Groton for over 26 years before his retirement.

Mr. Duhamel had been an instructor for the Civil Air Patrol in Westerly and worked with the Civil Defense for the town of Charlestown. He was an avid flyer for many years and had served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Robert is survived by one daughter, Marti Hawker of Crowley, Texas; two sons, Edward Duhamel of Silverdale, Wash., and Robert Duhamel II of Charlestown; his brother, Jerry Duhamel of Charlestown; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Calling hours will be held on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St., Westerly. A graveside service with full military honors will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. in River Bend Cemetery, Beach Street, Westerly.

Donations may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer's Association, 245 Waterman St., Providence, RI 02906.
