DORIS ELIZABETH STRETTON, 78, of Old Beach Road, a personnel director at Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City, died Tuesday at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Inpatient Center, Providence.
Born in New York City, a daughter of the late Albert H. and Louise (Reidenback) Stretton, she lived in London and New York City before retiring to Newport.
Miss Stretton served on the board of directors of Seaman's Church Institute and was a member of Spouting Rock Beach Club and the Clambake Club.
She leaves a brother, Gerald Stretton of Newport.
A memorial service will be held Monday at 3:30 p.m. in St. Columba Berkley Memorial Chapel, Indian Avenue, Middletown.

ELIZABETH S.J. CANAVAN - Newport
ELIZABETH S.J. CANAVAN, 97, of 21 Sherman St., a member of Community Baptist Church, where she served as a deaconess and sang in the senior choir, died Wednesday at the Heatherwood Rehabilitation and Subacute Center. She was the wife of the late Martin L. Canavan.
Born in Franklin, Va., she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mr. Story.
She was past president of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Newport Women's League. She was a member of the Swanhurst Chorus and the NAACP and had been a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.
She leaves a son, Harry B. Jones of Newport; a stepson, Mark Canavan of Woonsocket; three daughters, Elsie Pass of Greensboro, N.C., Margie Ricks-Abdulah of North Providence and Lydia Ricks of Porstmouth; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Community Baptist Church, 50 Dr. Marcus F. Wheatland Blvd. Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park, Middletown.

JOHN R. FROAIS - North Smithfield
JOHN R. FROAIS, 80, of North Main Street died Wednesday at Overlook Nursing Home, Pascoag. He was the husband of the late Yvonne (Gazalle) Froais.
Born in Bristol, a son of the late Peter and Palmira (Ferriera) Froais, he was a lifelong resident of Slatersville.
Mr. Froais was a truck driver for Edgcomb Steel Co. for 22 years, retiring in 1979.
He was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church, Slatersville, and a member of the VFW in Forestdale. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He leaves a son, Ronald J. Froais of North Smithfield; a daughter, Elaine L. Carty of North Smithfield; a sister, Lillian Costa of North Smithfield; two grandsons.
The funeral will be held tomorrow at 8 a.m. from the Holt Funeral Home, 510 South Main St., Woonsocket, with a Mass at 9 in St. John the Evangelist Church, Church Street, Slaterville. Burial with military honors will be in the parish cemetery.

KATHLEEN A. HENKE - Pawtucket
KATHLEEN A. HENKE, 64, of Courtney Avenue, a former nurse, died Wednesday at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center, Providence.
Born in Chicago, Ill., a daughter of the late John and Grace (Kavanaugh) Vosgerau, she lived in Pawtucket for 25 years.
She was a licensed practical nurse at Slater Health Center for 31/2 years, retiring several years ago. She had previously worked at Miriam Hospital for 21 years.
She was a graduate of Kenosha School of Nursing, now Kenosha Technical Institute, in Chicago.
She leaves a brother, Richard W. Vosgerau, and a sister, Marilyn G. Stoops of Attleboro. She was sister of the late John H. Vosgerau and Theodore Vosgerau.
The funeral will be held tomorrow at 8 a.m. from the Duffy-Poule Funeral Home, 20 Peck St., Attleboro, with a funeral Mass at 9 in St. John the Evangelist Church, 133 North Main St., Attleboro. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Attleboro.

ALEXINA GENDREAU - Pawtucket
ALEXINA GENDREAU, 95, of South Bend Street died Wednesday in the Friendly Home, Woonsocket. She was the wife of the late Eugene Gendreau.
Born in Putnam, Conn., a daughter of the late Henry and Delia (Bousquet) Laflamme, she lived in Pawtucket for more than 50 years.
She leaves two daughters, Theresa E. Lamothe of Pawtucket and Dorothy L. Poirier of Hartford, Conn.; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Leona Choiniere and Eva Beaupre.
The funeral will be held tomorrow at 9 a.m. from the Manning-Heffern Funeral Home, 68 Broadway, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Joseph Church, Walcott Street. Burial wil be in Notre Dame Cemetery.

JAMES ROBERT "BOB" LUSTER - Providence
JAMES ROBERT "BOB" LUSTER, 71, of South Main Street, Putnam, Conn., formerly of Thompson, Conn., died Wednesday at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, Worcester.
Born in Putnam, he was a son of the late James and Hazel (Pugh) Luster.
Mr. Luster worked for many years at the former American Optical Co. in Putnam and Southbridge, Mass. He was a volunteer firefighter with the Thompson Hill Fire Engine Company and served as constable for the Town of Thompson for many years.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member and past commander of the Albert J. Breault Post 1523 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the American Legion.
He leaves a brother, Duane Luster of Glastonbury, Conn., and a sister, Joan Luster of Thompson.
A graveside service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the West Thompson (Conn.) Cemetery, Route 12.

Fall River man dies in truck crash
SWANSEA, Mass. -- A Fall River man was killed on Route 195 east last night when his truck smashed into a bridge abutment.
The state police said that a truck driven by Gary S. Jennings, 43, of Emerson Street, veered off the highway at around 7:15 p.m. and traveled 350 feet on the shoulder before striking the abutment, which supports the Gardners' Neck Road overpass.
A passing motorist stopped and pulled Jennings from the truck shortly before it burst into flames, said Trooper Michael Bates. Jennings was taken to Charlton Memorial Hospital, in Fall River, where he was pronounced dead from "massive chest trauma," Bates said.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.

ELISABETH G. McCAFFREY - Providence
ELISABETH G. McCAFFREY, formerly of President Avenue, a former teacher, died yesterday at the Hillcrest Nursing Home, Fitchburg, Mass.
Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Edward J. and Mary E. (Morrissey) McCaffrey.
Miss McCaffrey had taught at the Fox Point Elementary School for more than 30 years.
She was a graduate of Elmhurst Academy and received her bachelor's and master's degrees from Rhode Island College.
She was past president of the Elmhurst Alumnae Association and a former officer of the Associate Alumnae of the Sacred Heart. She was a communicant of St. Sebastian Church and a member of its Eucharistic League and Visiting Committee. She was a member of the Rhode Island Association of Retired Teachers and a member of the GAR.
She did volunteer work for the East Side FISH and was a member of the International Federation of Catholic Women's Clubs.
She leaves a sister, Mary V. McCaffrey of Fitchburg; two nieces and three nephews. She was sister of the late Edward J. McCaffrey.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated in Fitchburg. A committal service will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of St. Francis Cemetery, Smithfield Avenue, Pawtucket. Burial will follow.

ROSE SAMUEL-KOLODNEY - Providence
ROSE SAMUEL-KOLODNEY, 88, of Sunrise, Fla., formerly of Providence, died yesterday at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She was the wife of the late Dr. Joseph Kolodney and the late Alexander Samuel.
Born in Russia, a daughter of the late Harry and Ethel (Brody) Kagan, she lived in Sunrise since 1972, previously living in Providence most of her life.
She was a member of Temple Emanu-El and its Sisterhood, the Women's Association of the Jewish Home for the Aged, Hadassah and Bnai Brith, all in Providence, and the City of Hope, Sunrise.
She leaves a daughter, Beth Sarat of Sunrise; a stepson, Richard Samuel in New Jersey; two sisters, Bea Davis of Sunrise and Marion Goldfine of Woonsocket; and nine grandchildren. She was the stepmother of the late Felice Greene and sister of the late Anna Orodenker, Samuel C., Bernard, Morris, Edward and Jacob Kagan.
The funeral will be held Sunday at 10 a.m. in Mount Sinai Memorial Chapel, 825 Hope St. Burial will be in Lincoln Park Cemetery, Warwick.

WILLIAM H. "WEBE" COSTELLO - Providence
WILLIAM H. "WEBE" COSTELLO, 47, of Warren Street, formerly of Woburn, Mass., a self-employed carpenter, died last Friday at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston.
Born in Woburn, a son of Harold J. Costello of Sanford, Maine, and Kathleen E. (Harron) Costello of Tewksbury, Mass., he had lived in Woburn before moving to San Francsico, Florida and to Providence in 1990.
Besides his parents, he leaves three brothers, Paul D. Costello of Mesa, Ariz., Robert E. Costello of Woburn and James D. Costello of Providence; three sisters, Linda L. DeVito and Joan R. Marte, both of Lawrence, Mass., and Kathleen A. Tighe of Woburn; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held at the Graham Funeral Home, Woburn.
