CARL R. WHITNEY - Somerset
CARL R. WHITNEY, 74, of Watercress Avenue, an employee of the State of Connecticut for 30 years at several different state hospitals, before retiring in 1987, died unexpectedly Tuesday at home.
Born in Somerset, Mass., son of the late Frank A. and Mabel L. (Fales) Whitney, he had been a Connecticut resident for the past 50 years, living in several communities.
A World War II Army veteran, he was the recipient of a medical discharge and then served as a third class petty officer in the U.S. Maritime Service. He was a member of the Evening Star Lodge No. 101, AF and AM, Unionville, Conn., and had been a member of the Congregational Christian Church, Somerset, for over 60 years.
He leaves one brother, Kenneth E. Whitney of Somerset; and one sister, Mildred Dexter of Fall River.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow at noon in the Hathaway Community Home for Funerals, 900 Buffinton St., Somerset. Burial will be in Portsmouth Cemetery, Portsmouth, RI.

JOSEPH A. GALLO JR. - Warwick
JOSEPH A. GALLO JR., 53, of Nightingale Avenue, a teacher in the Warwick Public Schools for 25 years, most recently at Toll Gate High School and Winman Junior High School, before retiring five years ago, died Monday at Kent County Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Eileen (Duffy) Gallo.
Born in Providence, a son of Esther (Ferrelli) Gallo of Warwick and the late Joseph A. Gallo Sr., he lived in Warwick for 38 years. Mr. Gallo was a highly decorated Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant upon graduation from Providence College in 1965, where he was a member of the ROTC and the Providence College ROTC Pershing Rifles Precision Drill Team. He was wounded in the Battle for Saigon during the TET Offensive in January, 1968. He was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross (Army), the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with two Service Stars, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Rhode Island Cross, the Presidential Unit Citation, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross, and the Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Honor Medal.
He was a member of the Eastern Paralyzed Veterans Association, the Military Order of Foreign Wars of the United States, and the 25th Infantry Division Association. He was a member and secretary of the Board of Directors of the Warwick Credit Union.
Besides his wife and mother, he leaves a daughter, Marie V. Calenda of Warwick; a son, Michael J. Gallo of Cranston; a brother, Paul Gallo of Warwick; and two granddaughters.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. from the Peter J. Barrett Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Ave., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Kevin Church, Sandy Lane. Burial, with military honors, will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.

EDMUND J. McKENNA - Warwick
EDMUND J. McKENNA, 72, of Holiday Avenue, an employee at Providence Lithograph for 40 years before retiring in 1985, died Tuesday at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Inpatient Center in Providence. He was the husband of Muriel E. (White) McKenna.
Born in Providence, a son of the late John T. and Flora (Gagnon) McKenna, he lived in Warwick for 48 years.
Mr. McKenna was an Army veteran of World War II, and a communicant of St. Peter Church in Warwick.
Besides his wife, he leaves four daughters, Kathleen M. Dennard, Karen A. Raeburn and Susan J. Taylor, all of East Greenwich, and Marilyn J. McKenna of Wickford; two brothers, John T. McKenna in Florida and Robert McKenna of Warwick; a sister, Madeline Crowley of Narragansett; and seven grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. in St. Peter Church, Fair Street. Burial, with military honors, will be in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.

WILLIAM TAYLOR - Warwick
WILLIAM TAYLOR, of Hope Avenue and Gooseberry Road, Snug Harbor, Point Judith, an employee of New England Telephone for 31 years until retiring as the New England district manager of the equipment installation department in 1975, died Tuesday at Kent County Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Marjorie C. (Hartley) Taylor.
Born in Providence, a son of the late William T. and Eleanor (Humphreys) Taylor, he lived in Warwick most of his life.
Mr. Taylor was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the 43rd Signal Company Veterans Association.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Col. William D. Taylor, U.S. Army, Ft. Leavenworth, Kan.; a sister, Avis F. Jenison of Lakeland, Fla.; and two grandsons.
The funeral and burial will be private.

FLORIDA B. (ROBITAILLE) SULLIVAN - West Warwick
FLORIDA B. (ROBITAILLE) SULLIVAN, 87, of Cowesett Avenue, a pharmacist at the former Liggett's Drugstore, Providence, for over 20 years until retiring in 1957, and then owner of Florida's Beauty Salon, Providence, for 10 years, died yesterday at the West View Nursing Home. She was the widow of William J. Sullivan.
A lifelong resident of West Warwick, she was a daughter of the late Philbert and Leona (Henry) Robitaille.
Mrs. Sillivan was a former member of the Hairdressers Association of Rhode Island and the national and West Warwick chapters of the AARP.
She leaves a sister, Catherine L. Quinn, of West Warwick, and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Doris Warren.
A memorial Mass will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. in St. James Church, Main Street. Burial will be private.

JAMES R. GILCHRIST - Woonsocket
JAMES R. GILCHRIST, 73, of 181 Rathbun St., a foreman at the former Universal Optical Co. of Attleboro for many years before retiring in 1988, died Wednesday at home. He was the husband of Lillian J. (Lavoie) Gilchrist.
Born in Los Angeles, Calif., a son of the late James and Lillian (Gaboury) Gilchrist, he lived in Woonsocket most of his life.
He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving in Italy and France.
Besides his wife he leaves a son, Stephen W. Gilchrist of Cranston; a brother, Sam Gilchrist of San Roman, Calif., four stepsons, five stepdaughters and 21 grandchildren. He ws the brother of the late Janice Stearns.
The funeral will be held Friday at 9 a.m. from the Lauzon Memorial, 85 Rathbun St., Woonsocket, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Ann Church. Burial will be in the R.I. Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.

HARRIET M. MURPHY - Attleboro
HARRIET M. MURPHY, 80, of 63 South Ave., died Sunday at Sturdy Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Edward J. Murphy.
Born in Scituate, she was a daughter of the late William and Erma (Fogg) Randall.
She leaves three sons, Robert Nixon of North Attleboro, Dean Nixon of Central Falls, Gordon Nixon of South Attleboro; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Stevens Corner Cemetery, Rehoboth, Mass.

MILDRED E. TEED - Barrington
MILDRED E. TEED, 88, of 26 Mosher Drive, died Tuesday in the Jane Brown Unit of Rhode Island Hospital. She was the wife of the late Charles O. Teed.
Born in Newport, a daughter of the late John P. and Julia (Mcdonald) Meyer, she lived in Barrington for 55 years.
She leaves two daughters, Deborah Teed of Barrington, and Marilyn MacDonald of Narragansett; a brother, John Meyer of Bristol; and a sister, Julia Geisler of Arlington, Tex.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. from the Smith-Mason Funeral Home, 398 Willett Ave., Riverside, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Luke Church, Washington Road, Barrington. Burial will be in Forest Chapel Cemetery, Barrington.

FRANCIS J. LEONARD Sr. - Cranston
FRANCIS J. LEONARD Sr., 93, formerly of Woodbury Road, died yesterday at Morgan Health Center, Johnston, after a one-year illness. He was the husband of the late Dorothea M. (Harris) Leonard.
Born in Provincetown, Mass., the son of the late Victor and Mary Ann (Coyle) Leonard, he moved to Cranston from Providence 10 years ago.
Mr. Leonard was a truck driver for the Klein Company for 35 years before retiring in 1970 and was also a truck driver for the Pawtucket Ready Mix cement company.
He served in the Navy and the Coast Guard from 1920 to 1932.
Mr. Leonard leaves two sons, Victor F. Leonard, of Providence, and Francis J. Leonard Jr., of Johnston; four daughters, Patricia M. Richmond, of Newfoundland, Pa., Ann Beaver, of Providence, Joy Generali, of Cranston, and Cathleen J. Mattia, of North Providence; 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He was the father of the late Ralph C. Leonard and brother of the late Jennie McHale.
The funeral will be held Friday at noon from Russell J. Boyle and Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith St., Providence. Burial will be in Pawtuxet Memorial Park, Warwick.

DOROTHEA CASTRO - Cranston
DOROTHEA CASTRO, 71, of Inverness, Fla., a shipping clerk for the A.M. Schaler Co., retiring in 1987, died Sunday at home.
Born in Staten Island, N.Y., she lived in Florida for the past ten years, previously living in Cranston.
She leaves a daughter, Marsha Stolle of Kissimmee, Fla.; two sons, George F. Castro of Ocala, Fla., and John P. Castro of Inverness, Fla.; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Burial will be in Swan Point Cemetery at a later date.

VIRGINIA A. OZOLINS - Cranston
VIRGINIA A. OZOLINS, 64, of Wellington Avenue, died Tuesday at Miriam Hospital. She was the wife of Alfred Ozolins.
Born in New Bedford, Mass., a daughter of Adeline (Furtado) Carreiro of New Bedford, Mass., and the late Antone Carreiro, she lived in Cranston for seven years, previously living in Connecticut and Barrington.
Besides her husband and mother she leaves a daughter, Darlene O'Donnell of Johnston; two sons, Edwin Ozolins of Cranston, and Milton Reynolds of Acushnet, Mass.; and a granddaughter.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 9 a.m. in St. Rocco Church, Atwood Avenue, Johnston. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Providence.
