About New York, New York, Extracted Death Index, 1862-1948
Vital records are a cornerstone of family history research because they were typically created at or near the time of the event, making the record more likely to be accurate. This collection consists of indexes to deaths in the five Boroughs of New York City reported to the Health Department prior to 1949.
Note that the index collection is not complete. The following are the currently available death record indexes:

About New York, Death Index, 1880-1956
This collection consists of indices of deaths from the state of New York. Details vary, but may include the following information for the deceased:
- name
- death date
- death city
- age at death
- gender
- certificate number
Death records from Albany, Buffalo, and Yonkers were held locally until 1914 and do not appear in this collection. Similarly, records from New York City were also maintained separately.
