Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

SPERNOGA, JOSEPH

December 1, 1999

Joseph A. Spernoga, 103, of East Chestnut Street in Wilkes-Barre, died Wednesday at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Township.

Born March 4, 1896, in Kacwin, Austria-Hungary, he was the son of the late Andrew and Mary Spernoga.

He emigrated to the United States at the age of 15, settling in the North End section of Wilkes-Barre.

He operated a tavern most of his life, except for 28 years when he worked for the Stegmaier Brewing Co. He retired from Spernoga's Hide-Away at the age of 96.

Mr. Spernoga was the oldest living member of Sacred Heart Slovak Church on North Main Street in Wilkes-Barre and was a member of the Slovak Catholic Sokols.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Mary Jezerchak Spernoga; a sister, Agnes Magera; and brother, Andrew.

Surviving are his daughters , Josephine, Kingston, Pa.; Theresa Kinney, Harveys Lake, Pa.; Ann, at home; and Frances, at home; grandsons, Barry, Levittown, Pa.; and Daniel, Fairfax, Va.

The funeral will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. from McLaughlin Funeral Service, 142 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre, with a Funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church on North Main Street in Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Dallas.

Friends may call Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Joseph and Mary Spernoga Scholarship Fund, c/o Slovak Catholic Sokols, Monsignor Francis J. Beeda, S.T.L., 604 N. Laurel St., Hazleton, 18201-4398.

GEORGE SPITTEL

George J. Spittel, Jr., 69, of Laurel Run Road in Wilkes-Barre died December 31 at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre.

Born March 6, 1929, in Parsons, Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late George J. Spittel, Sr., and Esther Brown Spittel.

He was educated in the Bear Creek schools.

He served as a Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.

He was employed as a truck driver for the Nicholas Trucking Company.

He and his wife, the former Eleanor Brodhun, celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary in 1998.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Esther Healey Latourney.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons , Harry, Bear Creek; Carl, Pittston; brothers , Arthur, Plainsville; Matthew, Allentown; Thomas, Newark, Del.; sisters , Katherine Sipko, Dupont; Harriette Etienne, Oka, Canada; Rose Wells, Wilkes-Barre; nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Stanley S. Stegura Funeral Home, 614 S. Hanover St., Nanticoke with the Rev. Donald Gilmore, of the Westmoor Church of Christ, Goodwin Avenue, Kingston officiating.

Interment will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.

STANKUS, LEO

July 5, 1999

Leo Leonard Stankus, 81, of Philadelphia Avenue in West Pittston died Monday at Penn State Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Township after being stricken ill at his home.

Born in Pittston, he was a son of the late Anthony and Marcella Stankanus Stankus. He was a 1936 graduate of Pittston High School.

He had been self-employed as a painting and paperhanging contractor throughout the Wyoming and Lackawanna valleys for more than 50 years.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of West Pittston, and had served as a member of the board of trustees for several years. He had been a member of Valley Lodge 499, F&AM in West Pittston for more than 50 years; and was also a member of the Scottish Rite Masonic Bodies of Keystone Consistory, AASR in Scranton; and of Irem Temple, AAONMS in Wilkes-Barre.

He was preceded in death by his brothers , John and Alexander Stankus; and sisters , Helen Owens and Julia Zack.

Surviving are his wife of almost 58 years, the former Betty Phelps; daughter, Carolee Thatcher, Williamsport; sons , Dr. Richard Stankus, Auburn, N.Y.; and retired state trooper Barry Stankus, West Pittston; six grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

There will be a memorial service at 1 p.m. Sunday in the First United Methodist Church on Wyoming and Montgomery avenues in West Pittston, with the Rev. Robert J. Herrala officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlors following the service.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the H. Merritt Hughes Funeral Home, Inc., 211 Luzerne Avenue, West Pittston. Valley Lodge will conduct Masonic services at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, 408 Wyoming Avenue, West Pittston, 18643; or to the Shriner's Hospitals, c/o Irem Temple, Box 307, Dallas, 18612.

STANTON, JOSEPH

November 23, 1999

Joseph D. Stanton Sr., 78, of Rockville, Md., died Tuesday at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Md.

Born Jan. 6., 1921, in West Wyoming, he was the son of the late Joseph H. and Ellen McAndrew Stanton.

He retired after 47 years of service for the federal government.

Surviving are his wife, Ann Marie Stanton; sons , Joseph D. Stanton, Jr., Gaithersburg, Md.; and Daniel F. Jayjock, Rockville; daughter, Carol Ann Zulli, Allentown; 10 grandchildren; and sister, Ethel Roberts, Pittston.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Paul's Catholic Church in Damascus, Md. Interment will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, Md.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Olin L. Molesworth P.A. Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Paul's Building Fund, 9250 Damascus Road, Damascus, MD 20872.

ALTON STARK

April 30, 1999

Alton Robert Stark Sr., of Tunkhannock died Friday at Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock.

Born April 25, 1912, in Bardwell, he was a son of the late Robert and Cora Belle (Dailey) Stark.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Lois Facssett Stark; daughters , Patricia Krupa, Carol O'Donnell and Roberta Campbell, all of Philadelphia; Barbara Rando, Vestal, N.Y.; and Dawn Stark, Tunkhannock; sons , Alton, Jr., Tunkhannock; and Lewis, Birchardville; 14 Grandchildren, 15 Great-grandchildren, brother, Albert, Tunkhannock; sisters , Vida Snover, Tunkhannock; and Norma Barber, Fleetville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Emma Jane Stark.

Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by the Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home, 73 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 730 Pittston Ave., Scranton, 18501.

Stavish, Robert

January 22, 2000

Robert T. Stavish, of Korn Krest, Hanover Township, died Saturday upon admission to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born May 18, 1950, in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Joseph and Ann (Zalewski) Stavish.

He was a 1967 graduate of GAR Memorial High School.

He worked for Bechtel Corp., Salem, N.J., and was a welder at the PP&L power plant, Shickshinny. He also worked for the M.K. Rail Corp, Mountaintop.

He was a member of St. Casimir's Church, Lyndwood, Hanover Township.

Surviving are his wife, the former Cecilia Orloski; daughters , Renee Stavish, Wilkes-Barre; and Karen Stavish, at home; brother, Joseph, Pleasant Valley, N.Y.; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday from the Bednarski Funeral Home, Wilkes-Barre, with a funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Casimir's Church.

Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

STEADLE, LOUIS

October 6, 1999

Louis Steadle, of McLean Street in Wilkes-Barre died Wednesday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born March 26, 1927, in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late William and Caroline (Roos) Steadle. He attended St. Nicholas School and graduated from GAR Memorial High School.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He had been employed at Nesbitt Memorial Hospital in Kingston for many years.

He was a member of St. Nicholas Church in Wilkes-Barre.

He was preceded in death by his brother, William; and sisters , Caroline and Dorothy Steadle.

Surviving is his sister, Catherine Steadle, with whom he resided.

Funeral services will be at 9:45 a.m. Friday from the Walter W. Lisman and Son Funeral Home, 233 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre, with a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Nicholas Church. Interment will be in the parish cemetery in Shavertown.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of services Friday.

Steinruck, Audrey

March 3, 2000

Audrey R. Steinruck, 70, of Bordentown Township, N.J., died Friday at St. Francis Medical Center, Trenton, N.J.

Born in Berwick, she was the daughter of the late Mason B. and Nina E. Brader Williams. She resided in the Trenton-Bordentown area for the past 44 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Steinruck.

Surviving are her sons , Robert J. Steinruck, Bordentown Township; Rex M., Ronald J. and James W. Steinruck, all of Trenton; daughters , Gloria J. Loncosky, Yardville, N.J.; Gail J. Brayerton, Trenton; sisters , Katherine LaBarr, Corning, N.Y.; Ethel Lemon, Bridgewater, N.J.; Beulah Naugle, Berwick; Villa Burns, Precktricktown, N.J.; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday from the Charles L. Cease Funeral Home, 634 Reyburn Road, Shickshinny (Muhlenburg,) with the Rev. Robert Brayerton officiating. Interment will be in Dodson Cemetery, Southdale. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Rogers Funeral Home, 929 S. Clinton Ave., Trenton, and from 11 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the Cease Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to First Assembly of God Church, 87 Route 31 South, Pennington, N.J., 08534.

Stelma, Miriam

March 30, 2000

Miriam "Mim" R. Stelma, 53, of Pocono Mountain Lakes, White Haven, died Thursday at the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre.

Born April 5, 1946, in Hazleton, she was a daughter of the late Herman T. and Hazel (Clewell) Reimold. She was a 1964 graduate of Weatherly High School and the Hazleton Vocational-Technical School of Nursing as a licensed practical nurse. She was a nurse at Geisinger White Haven Health Center. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, White Haven.

Surviving are her husband, Robert; daughter, Tracey, White Haven; son, Lt. Brian, U.S. Air Force, Shreveport, La.; brother, Herman Reimold and sister, Betty Lehr, both of Weatherly; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday from the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home, 211 First St., Weatherly. The Rev. Michele D. Kaufman will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Weatherly. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

ANNA STELMACK

April 28, 1999

Anna Stelmack, of Larksville died Wednesday at Dorrance Manor in Kingston.

Funeral arrangements are pending from the Andrew Strish Funeral Home, 11 Wilson St., Larksville.
