SIMPSON, JACK

October 1, 1999

Jack R. Simpson Sr., 78, of East Mountain Apartments in Wilkes-Barre, died Friday at the Birchwood Nursing Center in Nanticoke.

Born May 4, 1921, in Scranton, he was a son of the late James and Mary (Finn) Simpson.

He was educated in Elmhurst and Scranton schools, and attended Rochester Poly Technical Institute. He resided in Pennsylvania his entire life.

He was employed by the Bell Telephone Co. of Pennsylvania for 36 years and retired in 1982 as a senior executive. For several years, he supervised all Bell operations in Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania . At various times, he held positions with Bell of Pennsylvania in Wilkes Barre, Scranton, Stroudsburg, Pottsville and Hazleton.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and finished his service at the rank of captain in Patton's Third U.S. Army. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his action in combat and participated in many of the major campaigns in Europe.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge 504 in Moscow, a Shriner in the Bloomsburg Consistory, a member of the Telephone Pioneers, and a past commander of the American Legion in Moscow.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, the former Jean Stanton; sons , Jack, William, James and David; sister, Dorothy; and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sarah Simpson Fallon; and brother, James.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at from the Howard J. Snowdon Funeral Home, 1810 Sanderson Ave., Scranton. Private committal services will be conducted in Fairview Memorial Park in Elmhurst.

Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, and from 9 a.m. until the time of services Monday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, c/o Irem Temple, P.O. Box 307, Dallas, 18612.

SIMS, PHILLIP

September 25, 1999

Phillip F. Sims, 29, of Carver Street, Larksville, died Saturday after he was struck by a motor vehicle along Interstate 81 in Lackawanna County.

Born Sept. 5, 1970, in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of John S. and Emma Keefe Sims, of Larksville.

He attended Wyoming Valley West schools and was employed by Coca Cola, Plains Township.

He was a member of Teamsters Union Local 401, Wilkes-Barre, and was a member and past president of Aerie 546, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Plymouth.

He attended Larksville Mountain Full Gospel Church.

He and his wife, the former Tracy Ellard, recently celebrated seven years of marriage.

Surviving, in addition to his wife and parents, are children, Meagen, Phillip and Stephen, all at home; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday from the Williams Funeral Home, 114 W. Main St., Plymouth, with the Rev. Thelma and the Rev. Weldon Hettesheimer officiating.

Interment will be in Chapel Lawn Memorial Park, Dallas.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today.

SITLER, STEPHEN

November 2, 1999

Stephen R. Sitler, 48, of Shickshinny R.R.3, died Tuesday at his home after a long illness.

Born Dec. 10, 1950, in Berwick, he was the son of the late Harold E. and Ada B. (Birt) Sitler. He was a 1969 graduate of Central Columbia High School, and a lifelong resident of the Berwick area.

He was a lineman for Pennsylvania Power & Light for more than 29 years.

He was a member of the Coles Creek Sportsman's Club since 1976.

Surviving are his wife of 22 years, Patricia M. (Lawrence) Sitler; children, Gregory A. Sitler, Eaton Rapids, Mich.; William J. Runco, Berwick; and Kristin L. Martz, Benton; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the McMichael Funeral Home, state Route 487, Benton R.R.2, with the Rev. Aaron G. Hastie Jr., of Orangeville Charge United Church of Christ, officiating. Private burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of services Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Columbia Montour Home Health Hospice, Locust Court, Suite 1, 599 E. Seventh St., Bloomsburg, 17815-2885.

JOHN SKELLY

John E. Skelly, 41, of Plains Township died Thursday at his home.

Born in Waterbury, Conn., and raised in Bridgeport, Conn., he was the son of Frederick Smith, Stratford, Conn., and Glenna (Loomis) Smith, Bridgeport, Conn.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are brothers , Jeffrey Skelly, Frederick Rogovsky, James Smith and Robert Smith, all of Bridgeport, Conn.; sisters , Brenda Downey and Dolene Matias, both of Bridgeport, Conn.; companion, Marion Kinnane, with whom he resided; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no funeral services or calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Kniffen-O'Malley Funeral Home, Inc., 465 S. Main St., Wilkes-Barre.

Skuzinski, Olivia

March 4, 2000

Olivia "Cecilia" Skuzinksi, 90, of Nanticoke, died Saturday at St. Martha Manor, Downingtown.

Born Dec. 28, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Jozef and Cecelia (Kitlowski) Twardowski. She was a graduate of Nanticoke High School, attended Bucknell University, and graduated from Syracuse University. She was a teacher for the Nanticoke School District. She was a board member of the Mill Memorial Library; a Friend of the Library; a member of the Nanticoke Mercy Hospital Auxiliary; the Nanticoke American Legion Auxiliary; the Nanticoke Democratic Women's Club and The Nanticoke Fine Arts Club. She was also a charter and board member of the Wilkes University Polish Room Committee; the Wyoming Historical and Geological Society; the Northeast Cultural Heritage Council and Folk Festival; the Northeast Philharmonic League and the Public School Employees Retirement System and its local Luzerne Wyoming Chapter.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph A.; son, Alexander; two grandchildren and one niece.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday from the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Nanticoke, with a Mass of Christian Burial. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Interment will be in the Holy Trinity Cemetery, Nanticoke. Memorial donations may be made to Wilkes University Polish Room Scholarship Committee.

MARY SLAVETSKAS

April 25, 1999

Mary Slavetskas, 88, a guest at the Anderson Personnel Care Facility at Wesley Village in Jenkins Township, formerly of Dickson City, died Sunday at Community Medical Center in Scranton.

Born in Olyphant, she was a daughter of the late George and Anna Lesho Senitsky. She was educated in Olyphant Schools.

Before her retirement, she was a clerk for the Oppenheim Store in Scranton.

She was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Dickson City and the parish Altar and Rosary Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John.

Surviving are her daughters , Barbara Cummings, Kingston; Patricia Pelucacci, Moscow; Joan Pisano, Pittston; and Suzanne Kashmer, Throop; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Anna Cabets, Scranton; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Friday from the Frank T. Mazur Funeral Home, Inc., 519 Dundaff St., Dickson City, with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Thomas the Apostle Church.

Interment will be in Cathedral Cemetery in Scranton.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Slusser, Jean

April 26, 2000

Jean M. Slusser, of Aster Court, Exeter, died Wednesday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in Kirkintilloch, Scotland, she was the daughter of the late John M. and Agnes M. (Muir) Jones. She was a graduate of Coughlin High School and Wilkes-Barre General Hospital School of Nursing and attended Muhlenburg College, Allentown. She was a medical/surgical nurse at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital and a U.S. Army Nurse Corps veteran of World War II, serving as a second lieutenant. She was active in scouting and was a troop leader in Fullerton and Trucksville. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Mountaintop, where she assisted in Red Cross Blood Drives and was a president of the Mountaintop Women's Club. She was an officer of the Luzerne County Engineers' Society Auxiliary, an honoree of the Women in military Service for America Memorial, Arlington, Va.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Jones.

Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Jack; daughters , Sheila Owens, Kingston; Carole Hartford, Walhalla, S.C.; Jacalyn Cohen, Baltimore; Jill Ferdinand, Forty Fort; 11 grandchildren and one niece.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday from the McCune Funeral Home, 80 S. Mountain Blvd., Mountaintop. The Rev. Dr. Wayne A. Heintzelman will officiate. Interment will be in the Albert Cemetery, Wright Township. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

BETTY (JONES) SMITH

April 29, 1999

Betty (Jones) Smith, of East Union Street in Nanticoke died Thursday at Mercy Hospital in Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Nanticoke, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Florence Jones Poretz.

She retired from the RCA Corp. at Crestwood Industrial Park in Wright Township.

She was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church in Nanticoke.

Surviving are her daughters , Janet Smith, at home; Lynn Newell, Nanticoke; Susan Sovyrda; four grandchildren; one aunt and one uncle.

Funeral services were held from the Earl W. Lohman Funeral Home in Nanticoke.

Interment was in Hanover Green Cemetery in Hanover Township.

SMITH, EMILY

September 26, 1999

Emily Smith, of Wilson Street in Larksville, died Sunday while on vacation in Cairo, Egypt.

Born in Larksville, she was the daughter of the late John and Eugenia Kalaweit Mayeski.

She resided in Larksville all of her life and was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Church in Larksville.

She was employed as a hair stylist at After Six Hair Styles in Wilkes-Barre.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo.

Surviving are her sister, Gloria Good, Dallas; nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Anthony of Padua Church, 1 Wilson St., Larksville.

Interment will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery in Courtdale.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Anthony's Church.

Arrangements are by the Andrew Strish Funeral Home, 11 Wilson St., Larksville.
