Samulevich, Frank

Frank J. Samulevich, 65, of Orchard Street, Glen Lyon, Newport Township, died Wednesday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.
Born Sept. 16, 1934, in the Lee section of Newport Township, he was a son of the late Frank and Mary (Lesnicki) Samulevich. He was a resident in Glen Lyon all of his life. He was a 1952 graduate of Newport Township High School. He was a miner for the Susquehanna Coal Co., Glen Nan Biscontini Coal Co., Casey Kasa Coal Co., Newport Township; and the Blue Coal Co., Wanamie, for 21 years; retiring from the coal companies in 1970; and worked for The Economy Warehouse, Hanover Township, retiring in 1982. He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1963. He was a member of St. Denis Church, Glen Lyon.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Pamela Ann.
Surviving are his wife, the former Rosemary Butz, to whom he was married for 46 years, son, Joseph F., Berwick; daughter, Rosanne Hoffman, Glen Lyon; four grandchildren; brothers , Joseph and Ronald Samuels, both of Glen Lyon; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Friday from the George A. Strish, Inc. Funeral Home, 211 W. Main St., Glen Lyon, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Adalbert's Church, Glen Lyon. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today. Interment will be in St. Michael's Cemetery, Glen Lyon.
ROBERT SANDERS

Robert G. Sanders, 78, of Garrahan Street in the Lyndwood section of Hanover Township died Wednesday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Born Aug. 21, 1920, in Plymouth, he was a son of the late George and Elizabeth (Wentko) Sanders.
He was a graduate of Plymouth High School and attended Wilkes College. He resided in Lyndwood for many years.
Before his retirement, he was employed as a welder and furnace technician by Certain-Teed Products Corp. in Wright Township. He had been employed as a welder for many years by Glen Alden Coal Co. and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Hawaii and the Pacific Theatre.
He was a member of St. Casimir's Church in Lyndwood.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda J. Simmons, and sister, Elizabeth Shusta.
Surviving are his wife, the former Helen Hasiak, with whom he would have celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary May 30; sons , Robert G., Jr., Forty Fort; and Richard S., Hanover Township; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brothers , Joseph, Ridley Park; and Thomas, Wilkes-Barre; sister, Marie Chudoba, Wilkes-Barre; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Friday from the S.J. Grontkowski Funeral Home, 530 W. Main St., Plymouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Casimir's Church.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Hanover Township.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. this evening.
SARACENO, ALFONSINA

Alfonsina V. "Alfie" (Volpe) Saraceno, of Susquehanna Avenue, Wyoming, and formerly of West Pittston, died Sunday in the Hospice Community Care Unit of Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.
Born in Pittston, she was the daughter of the late Santo and Dorothea (Licata) Volpe.
She was a graduate of West Pittston High School, class of 1941, and College Misericordia, class of 1945.
She was formerly employed as a music teacher at the former Swoyersville High School.
She was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows R.C. Church, West Wyoming; the West Pittston Women's Club and Chorale; founder and past officer of D.A.V. Women's Auxiliary, Chapter 46; member of the College Misericordia Alumni Association; and the General Federation of Women's Clubs of Pennsylvania .
She and her husband, Joseph, celebrated 50 years of marriage on Sept. 10.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Angela Agolino.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are sons , Anthony, Bethlehem; Joseph, Newtown Square; daughters , Mary Wright, Dallas; Dorothea Atherholt, West Wyoming; brother, Santo Volpe Jr., Pittston Township; sisters , Tina Bufalino and Stephanie Agati, both of West Pittston; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday from the Recupero Funeral Home, 406 Susquehanna Ave., West Pittston, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Sorrows Church.
Entombment will be in the family mausoleum at Denison Cemetery, Swoyersville.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Hospice Community Care at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

James Richard Saxe, infant son of Joseph E. and Janet Phillippe Saxe, of RR 1, New Albany, died Saturday at the Arnot Odgen Hospital, Elmira, N.Y. He was born on Thursday.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Richard Saxe; and step grandfather, James B. McGee.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are sisters , Leah and Lisa Saxe, at home; paternal grandmother, Helen McGee, New Albany; maternal grandmother and step grandfather, Gayle and David Teel, LaVernia, Texas ; maternal grandfather and step grandmother, Joseph and Anita Phillippe, Casterville, Texas ; maternal great-grandmothers, Ethel Phillippe and Gaynell Meyer, both of Texas ; maternal great-grandfather, Vernon Galyardt, Texas ; maternal great-great-grandmother, Ollie K. Hogue, Texas ; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Basil's Church, Dushore, with the Rev. Michael B. Harris, his pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Saxton, Edna

Edna Mae (Fox) Saxton, 72, of Berwick, died Friday at her home.
Born May 25, 1927, in Renovo, Clinton County, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Edna (Probst) Fox.
She was a graduate of Renovo High School.
She worked for the American Tobacco Co., Wilkes-Barre, and later for Consolidated Cigar Corp., Berwick.
She attended the Berwick Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Malcolm Saxton Sr.; and brother, Frank Fox.
Surviving are her sons , Earl M. "Buck" Jr., Berwick; and William E., Wapwallopen; daughter, Deborah K. Naus, Nescopeck; seven grandchildren; and brother, Earl Fox, Williamsport.
Private funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Kelchner-McMichael Funeral Home Inc., 119-121 E. Third St., Berwick, with the Rev. Fred J. Fields of the Calvary/St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Berwick, officiating.
Interment will be in Rose Lawn Cemetery, Berwick.
Private calling hours will be from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral Tuesday.

Sayre, Luther

Luther R. Sayre, 89, formerly of Leesport and East Main Street, Plymouth, died Sunday at Laurel Center Genesis Elder Care, Tilden Township.
Born in Oley, he was a son of the late James, Sr., and Catherine (Ramich) Sayre. He was a truck driver for the Bloom Furniture Store, Reading, for 40 years, retiring in 1978.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia (Columbo) Sayre.
Surviving are his daughters , Betty J. Spease, West Reading; and Shirley A. Confair and Sharon L. Wenrich, both of Leesport; three granddaughters and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday from the Milkins Funeral Home, Inc., Temple. Interment will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Refton.

Stella Schall, 89, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, died Wednesday at Hope Hospice House, Fort Myers, Fla.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Amelia (Sztuk) Dargewicz. She was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Church, Plains Township.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; son, Walter; brother, John Dargewicz; and sisters , Verna Macierowski and Pearl Barkovitz.
Surviving are her daughter, Leonardine Burns, Estero, Fla., with whom she resided; sisters , Sophie Sarnoski and Josephine Blazejewski, both of Wilkes-Barre; Mildred Bednar, Plains Township; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Monday from the Mark V. Yanaitis Funeral Home, 55 Stark St., Plains Township, with a funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. in Saints Peter and Paul Church, Plains Township. Schiffman, Joseph

Joseph K. Schiffman, 83, of Exeter Township, died Friday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Born in Pittston, he was the son of the late Louis and Jennie Karnofsky Schiffman. He was a graduate of Wyoming Seminary and the University of Pennsylvania . He served as chief of shoe rationing with the Office of Price Administration, Washington , D.C., during World War II.
He was proprietor of the Boston Shoe Store, Pittston. He was president and manager of Fox Hill Country Club, Exeter, and was also affiliated with Bartikowsky Jewelers, Wilkes-Barre.
He was Fox Hill's most senior member, honored for 50 years of membership in 1990. He founded the Junior Pittston Chamber of Commerce, was former president of the Pittston Chamber of Commerce, former secretary of the Board of Liberty National Bank, former board member of the Pittston YMCA, former president of the Pittston Kiwanis, former board member of the Pittston Hospital, former president of Pittston B'nai B'rith and member of Temple Israel, Wilkes-Barre.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Judge Jacob Schiffman; and sister, Nan Rosenthal.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, the former Betty Jayne Lenahan; daughters , Amy Day, Pittston; Marcy Kaplan, Lawrenceville, N.J.; Lue Waskiewicz, Harding; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday from the Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, 348 S. River St., Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be in the family plot in the West Pittston Jewish Cemetery. Rabbi Larry Kaplan and Cantor Ahron Abraham will officiate. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Rosenberg Chapel and from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Day, 104 Williams St., Pittston. MORTON SCHIOWITZ
Morton Schiowitz, 77, of Glen Riddle Lane, Dallas, died Monday in Jefferson Medical Hospital, Philadelphia, where he was a patient for four days.
A native of Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Morris and Molly Schiowitz.
He was a graduate of E.L. Meyers High School, Wilkes Junior College and Bucknell University.
He was the owner of General Supply and Paper Company and president of Nowco International and Integrity Seal International, all located on George Avenue, Wilkes-Barre.
He was a World War II veteran where he attained the rank of lieutenant. He participated as a bombardier in the U.S. Air Force in the European Theater.
He was a member and past president of Rotary International in 1975.
He was a board member of Wyoming Valley Children's Association and the American Heart Association, local chapter. He was a Mason of Lodge 665 and a member of Caldwell Consistory and Irem Temple.
He was recently appointed as trustee of the Jewish Community Center. He was a member of Temple Israel and Ohav Zedek.
Surviving are his wife, the former Rosemary Barkman; children, Morris, Wellington, Fla.; Elaine Lewis, Lehman Township; Henry, New York City; Bernice (Jackie) Mager, Laflin; eight grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, 348 S. River St., Wilkes-Barre, with Rabbi Meir Rosenberg officiating.
Interment will be in Ohav Zedek Cemetery, Hanover Township.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday at the family home, 9 Glen Riddle Lane, Dallas.
