Herbert Meeker

Herbert J. Meeker Sr. of Main Road, Buttonwood section of Hanover Township, died Wednesday in Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.
Born Dec. 6, 1926 in Shavertown, Kingston Township, he was the son of the late Homer and Jenny Robbins Meeker.
He attended Wilkes-Barre schools and was formerly employed by the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Warehouse, Moosic.
He resided in Hanover Township for the past 36 years.
He was preceded in death by brothers , Homer and Russell.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Geraldine "Gerry"; a daughter, Connie, at home; a son Herbert Jr., Harveys Lake; two grandchildren; a sister Marlous G. Baker, Wilkes-Barre; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday from the Charles V. Sherbin Funeral Home, 630 Main Road, Hanover Green section of Hanover Township, with the Rev. Donald Hartshore, pastor of the Welsh Baptist Church, Wilkes-Barre, officiating.
Interment will be in Memorial Shrine Cemetery, Franklin Township.

Walter Mekeel

alter Fredrick Mekeel, of Centermoreland, died Wednesday at Carpenter Care Center, Tunkhannock.
Born Dec. 25, 1916, in Lehman Township, he was a son of the late Albert and Clara (Snyder) Mekeel. He was a veteran of World War II. He was a laborer in steel manufacturing and a truck driver for more than 30 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Louise Brunges Mekeel; brothers , Dorrance and Albert Murray; and sisters , Mildred Cadwalder, Rebecca Laubach and Alberta Taylor.
Surviving are his sons , Albert and Walter, both of Falls, Exeter Township; daughters , Rita Ann Coolbaugh and Lorena Holt, both of Harding, Exeter Township; several grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brother, Warren, Lehman Township; sisters , Elda Coolbaugh, Lehman Township; and Frances Moyer, Bloomsburg; several nieces and nephews; and his caregiver, Tammy Ramage, Harveys Lake.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday from the Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home, 73 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock. The Rev. Larry Michael-Rush, of the Centermoreland United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Menendez, Manuel

Manuel V. Menendez, 68, of Laflin Road, Laflin, died Wednesday at home.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of Mary (Sterba) Menendez, Miners Mills section of Wilkes-Barre, and the late Vincent Menendez. He was a 1950 graduate of Coughlin High School and lived in Laflin 24 years. He was a shop foreman with West Side Manufacturing for 25 years and operated a fork lift at Techneglas, Pittston Township. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Hudson, Plains Township; the International Ladies Garment Workers Union, Wilkes-Barre Local, retired; and the International Brotherhood of Glass Workers Union.
Surviving, in addition to his mother , are his wife, the former Christine T. Mock, with whom he celebrated 47 years of marriage June 28; daughter, Susan V. Menendez, San Jose, Calif.; sons , Anthony C., Paul E. and Christopher J., all of Laflin; Manuel J., Plains Township; and Richard V., Damascus, Md.; seven grandchildren; brother, Vincent, Bear Creek; and sisters , Alice Atherholt, Selinsgrove; and Marilyn Jones, Wilkes-Barre.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Christina Menendez.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday from the Mark V. Yanaitis Funeral Home, 55 Stark St., Plains Township, with a funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Church. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Hudson. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.
Mercincavage, Genevieve

Genevieve Mercincavage, 81, of Wilkes-Barre, died Saturday at the Allied Skilled Nursing Facility, Scranton.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Siankowski) Sikorski. She attended Wilkes-Barre public schools and worked for the Roth American Corp. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, Wilkes-Barre.
Surviving are her son, Robert, Scranton; daughters , Patricia Russell, Forty Fort; and Rosemary Stanko, Rockville, Md.; five grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Northeastern Pennsylvania Chapter, Kirby Health Center, Wilkes-Barre. Arrangements are by the August J. Haas Funeral Home Inc., 202 Pittston Ave., Scranton.
THADDEUS MESH
Thaddeus "Ted" Mesh, 75, of Lyndwood Avenue, Lyndwood section of Hanover Township, died Friday at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre.
Born Oct. 16, 1923, in the Inman Park section of Hanover Township, he was the son of the late Frank Joseph and Helen Harkel Mesh.
He attended Hanover High School and was a lifelong township resident.
He was a member of St. Casimir's Church in Lyndwood, and the parish Holy Name Society and Ushers' Club.
Before retiring, he was employed for many years in the custodial department of Hanover Area School District.
He was a musician, playing the trumpet and cornet for many years. He played with the Po-Amo Band and sat in with various Wyoming Valley bands, including Stanky & the Coal Miners.
He was a life member of the American Federation of Musicians, Local 140.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division in North Africa and Mid-Eastern Europe. He was wounded and declared missing for 43 days on his 23rd jump over North Africa.
He was a member and past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5267 in Hanover Township, and the Amvets Post 59 in the Breslau section of Hanover Township.
He was also a member of the American Legion Post 609 and the Goodwill Hose Company, both in the Lee Park section of Hanover Township, and the Bares-Lynn Club.
He was a state and national bugler for various military organizations, and he played Taps for more than 3,300 funerals.
He was a volunteer at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center for many years.
He was preceded in death by his brothers , Carl P. and Casimer Mesh; and sisters , Gertrude Katz and Frances Botlock.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, the former Bernadine Yarashefski; daughter, Rosanne Mesh, at home; sons , Ted Mesh Jr., Milton, Del.; and Frank Mesh, Honey Pot section of Nanticoke; three grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
military funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday from the S.J. Grontkowski Funeral Home, 530 W. Main St., Plymouth with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Casimir's Church.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Hanover Township.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. There will be a prayer service today at the funeral home.

Ernestine Metroka, of Yank Street in Courtdale died Wednesday at her home.
Born in Luzerne, she was a daughter of the late John and Barbara (Chukinas) Lugar.
She was a graduate of Luzerne High School and was a member of the Catholic Community of Luzerne.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Emil; brother, Michael; and sister, Josephine Sacks.
Surviving are her son, Emil J., San Antonio, Texas ; sister, Dorothy Mitchell, Dallas; brothers , John, California; and Richard, Pittston; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are asked to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church on Charles Street in Luzerne. Arrangements are by the Betz-Jastremski Funeral Home, Inc., 568 Bennett St., Luzerne. There will be no calling hours.
MEYERS, ALAN

Alan J. Meyers, 64, of Hunlock Creek, died Thursday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital due to injuries he received in a logging accident in Ross Township.
Born June 6, 1935, in Kingston, he was the son of Raymond and Mildred (Bonham) Meyers, Hunlock Creek.
He was a 1954 graduate of Shickshinny High School and resided in Hunlock Creek for most of his life.
He was a logger most of his life and owned and operated the Meyers Logging Co. for the last 15 years.
He was a member of the Calvary Bible Chapel, Muhlenburg, Union Township, where he taught the teenage boys Sunday School for 20 years and served on the Deacon Board for 15 years.
He was preceded in death by a son, Michael E. Meyers.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife of 41 years, the former Loretta Kivler; sons , J. Scott Meyers, Benton; Bradley R. Meyers, Hunlock Creek; Thomas A. Meyers, Hunlock Creek; Jason T. Meyers, Shickshinny; and Joshua J. Meyers, Hunlock Creek; a daughter, Kathi Jo Ratchford, Sterling, Va.; brothers , Dale R. Meyers, Ballston Lake, N.Y.; Duane Meyers, Hunlock Creek; a sister, Dena Gregory, Shickshinny Lake; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday from the Curtis L. Swanson Funeral Home Inc., corner of routes 29 and 118, Pikes Creek, with the Rev. Neil Martin, pastor of the Calvary Bible Chapel, officiating.
Interment will be in the Oakdale Cemetery, Hunlock Township.

Ronald J. Mikolaicik, 61, of Dallas died Friday at his home.
Born Aug. 29, 1937 in Nanticoke, he was a son of the late Joseph and Helen (Viecek) Mikolaicik.
He was a graduate of Nanticoke schools.
He had been employed as a technician at Procter & Gamble Co.
He was a member of Baptist Tabernacle in Wilkes-Barre.
He was preceded in death by his brothers , Joseph Mikolaicik and Theodore Mikolaicik; and sister, Pearl Prezkop.
Surviving are his wife, the former Mary Ann Eddy; daughter, Deborah Pape, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; son, Robert Mikolaicik, at home; one grandson; brother, Eugene Mikolaicik, West Nanticoke section of Plymouth Township; sister, Dolores Wytoshek, Nanticoke; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday from the Harold C. Snowdon Funeral Home, 140 N. Main St., Shavertown, Kingston Township with the Rev. William Frank officiating.
Interment will be in Fern Knoll Burial Park in Dallas.

Miller, Robert

Robert W. Miller, 75, of Dushore, died Friday at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania , Philadelphia, after major surgery.
Born Feb. 2, 1925, in Wilmot Township, he was a son of the late Charles and Anna Miller.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II, and in the Korean conflict.
He was a member of St. Anthony's Church, Stowell, the Loyalsock Post 996, Dushore, and the Wyalusing VFW Post 7593.
He was preceded in death by his sisters , Ruth Olbert, Catherine Mikeska and Marge Neuber; and brothers , Burton, Charles, George, Paul, LeRoy, Donald, Joseph and David.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Marian; daughters , Susan Kostic, Muncy; Nancy Traver, Jackson, Mo., and Marleah Henning, Mehoopany; son, Scott, Wyalusing; 16 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday from the McHenry Funeral Home, Wyalusing, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's of the Assumption Church, with the Rev. Thomas McDermott and Rev. Joseph Convoy officiating.
