Margaret K. Mazaika, of Stanton Street, Wilkes-Barre, died Friday in the Summit Health Care Center, Wilkes-Barre.
Born Oct. 5, 1915, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Matthew and Petronella Zagarauskas. She was a 1932 graduate of GAR Memorial High School, Wilkes-Barre, and resided in Wilkes-Barre most of her life. She was employed as a seamstress at the former P & R Clothing, Wilkes-Barre, for many years. She was a member of Holy Trinity Church, Wilkes-Barre.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony; and sister, Elizabeth Pysniak.
Surviving are her son, James, Exeter; daughter, Margo Cummings, Wilkes-Barre; brother, William Brown, Jacksonville, Fla.; sisters , Helen Quater, Wilkes-Barre; Jule Lersch, Lansdowne; Ann Kozlowski, Philadelphia; Alice Gillis, Van Etten, N.Y.; Kay Milcavage, Treverton; one granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
Private funeral services will be Tuesday from the Jendrzejewski Funeral Home, 21 N. Meade St., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Trinity Church. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Bear Creek. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.
Mazur, Josephine

Josephine E. Mazur, 88, of the Berwick Retirement Home, died Sunday.
Born Jan. 15, 1912, in Plymouth, she was a daughter of the late Jacob and Louise (Sybilski) Veronikowski. She attended St. Mary's Nativity Church School, Plymouth, and worked at the Atwater Throwing Co., Plymouth. She was a member of St. Mary's and St. Stephen's Community Church, Plymouth, the Polish American Congress, St. Cecilia's choir and St. Mary's Altar and Rosary Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; sister, Stella Younge; and brothers , Joseph, Anthony, John Vernikowski.
Surviving are her son, John, Bloomington, Del.; daughter, Josephine Digiuseppe, Hunlock Creek; three grandsons, one great-granddaughter, one great-grandson, and sister, Anna Johns, Plymouth.
The funeral will be at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday from the Piszczek Funeral Home, 70 E. Main St., Plymouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Mary's Nativity Church, Willow Street, Plymouth. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Plymouth Township. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. A Prayer service will be held on Tuesday. A Rosary Service will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday by the Altar and Rosary Society.
McAvoy, Barbara

Barbara McAvoy, 82, formerly of Pierce Street, Kingston, died Monday at Balanced Care Corp., Kingston.
Born Aug. 29, 1917, in Wilkes-Barre, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Mary (Surany) Heylek. She attended James M. Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre. She was a private housekeeper for several local families and worked for Dana Perfume, Mountaintop. She was a member of St. Ignatius Parish, Kingston, and its Altar and Rosary Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold T.; grandson, Michael Galabinski; sisters , Mary Peterson, Margaret Steitzer, Emma Smith and Rose Flaherty; and brothers , Henry and Joseph.
Surviving are her son, Thomas J., Wilkes-Barre; daughter, Barbara Galabinski, Warrior Run; four grandsons; three great-grandchildren; sister, Catherine Holtz, Philadelphia; brother, Carl Heylek, Rhode Island; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday from the McLaughlin Funeral Service, 416 Wyoming Ave., Kingston, with a funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. at St. Ignatius Church, 339 N. Maple Ave., Kingston. Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. Interment will be in St. Mary's Mausoleum, Hanover Township.
McCabe, Thomas

Thomas F. McCabe, 50, of Plane Street, Avoca, died Monday at the Mercy Hospice of Mercy Hospital in Scranton.
Born Oct. 11, 1949, in Pittston, he was the son of James McCabe and Mary Harris.
He attended Pittston schools and was a life resident of the Greater Pittston area.
He worked for Techneglas Inc. in Pittston Township for 28 years.
He was a member of St. Peter and Paul R.C. Church in Avoca.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Diana Poplawski McCabe; children, Salvatore De Francesco, Scranton; and Jason McCabe, at home; three grandchildren; sisters , Rosemary Fanucci, Scranton; Ann Marie Bell, New Jersey; Dorothy Engleman, West Pittston; and Helen McCabe, West Pittston; brothers , Edward, Shavertown, Kingston Township; John, Luzerne; James, Wilkes-Barre; Frank, Kingston; Joseph, Exeter; William, Wyoming; and Ted, West Pittston; aunts and uncles; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday from the Graziano Funeral Home Inc., 700 Township Blvd., Pittston Township, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Peter and Paul Church in Avoca.
Interment will be at St. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Avoca.

BRUCE MCCARTY
Bruce E. McCarty, 63, of Elkland Township in Sullivan County, died Tuesday at his home.
Born Oct. 26, 1935, in Forksville, he was a son of the late Clair and Elizabeth (Spence) McCarty.
He was a 1953 graduate of Estella High School.
He served in the U.S. Army 56th Artillery Group from 1958-60.
In 1983, he became the mechanic at the Baumunk Lumber Co. in Forksville, where he had worked for the past 16 years. He previously worked at the McCarty Driscoll Sawmill in Elkland Township for more than 17 years.
He was a member of Forksville United Methodist Church; Glenn Sharrow Post 35, American Legion in Hughesville; and Evergreen Lodge 163, F&AM in Monroeton; and the Forksville Area Sportsmen Association. He was an avid outdoorsman and deer hunter.
He was preceded in death by his brother, James.
Surviving are his wife, the former Shirley Novak, whom he married Dec. 27, 1958; daughters , Candice Coakley, Watsontown; Suzanne Smith, Hughesville; and Donna McCarty, Hillsgrove; three grandsons; brothers , Dale, Muncy Valley; and Robert, Lovelton; sisters , June Laudig, Montoursville; Jean Hoffman, Bloomsburg; Kathryn Swingle, Bonita Springs, Fla.; and Barbara Marshall, Williamsport; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Forksville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. James Hart officiating. Interment will be in Forksville Cemetery.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service Saturday at the church. Members of Evergreen Lodge 163, F&AM will conduct a Masonic funeral service at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

EMMA MCCARTY
Emma B. (Hughes) McCarty, of Charles Street in Wilkes-Barre died Thursday at Mercy Hospital in Wilkes-Barre.
Born Jan. 27, 1920 in Luzerne, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Mary Mason Hughes.
She was a member of Firwood United Methodist Church in Wilkes-Barre.
She was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1425 Women's Auxiliary in Plymouth.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry McCarty; brother, William Hughes; and sister, Ruth Feichter.
Surviving are her daughters , Emma Guesto, Wilkes-Barre; and Bonnie Eddy, with whom she resided; three grandchildren; sisters , Esther Parker and Mary Sullivan, both of Wilkes-Barre; and Jane Potocek, Baskin Ridge, N.J.; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday from the Frederick & Snowdon Funeral Home, 617 Carey Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with the Rev. Bette J. Poe, of Firwood United Methodist Church, officiating.
Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Hanover Township.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. VFW Post 1425 Women's Auxiliary will conduct services at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

JOHN MCCAWLEY
April 26, 1999
John Thomas McCawley, 67, of Luzerne died Monday at his home.
Born in Pittston in 1931, he was a son of the late John Joseph McCawley and the late former Marie Jeanette Mae Holleran.
A former Eagle Scout, he entered the U.S. Navy in 1949 after graduating from St. Mary of the Assumption and St. John the Evangelist High School in Pittston.
While in the Navy, he worked with the late Admiral Grace Hopper in placing computers on ships. He was a master chief and served in Vietnam during the war. He retired from the Navy after 30 years of service and then worked for Capital Blue Cross in data processing.
While working at Blue Cross, he attended night school at King's College and received an associate degree in computers and information systems in 1983, and a bachelor of science degree in health care management in 1989.
He retired from Blue Cross after 20 years and did volunteer work at St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association.
He was a member of St. Mary of the Maternity Church and served as an altar server and lector.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Dolores Gober, and brother, Edward.
Surviving are his second wife, the former Anne Marie Welebob; children, John J., Ambler; Joseph C., California, Md.; Maureen Sagi, Framingham, Mass.; Gerald T., Phoenix, Ariz.; and Elizabeth Hildebrandt, at home; three grandchildren; sisters , Ann Marie Mathis, Pittston; Mary Katherine Hergenrother, Joplin, Mo.; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10:45 a.m. Thursday from the M.J. McLaughlin Funeral Home, 416 Wyoming Ave., Kingston, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. in St. Mary of the Maternity Church on Park Avenue in Wilkes-Barre.
Interment will be in St. Catherine's Cemetery in Moscow.

McCRACKEN, SYLVESTER

Sylvester H. McCracken, of Rocky Glen Road, Avoca, died Monday at Moses Taylor Hospital, Scranton.
Born in Moosic, he was a son of the late George and Margaret (Lewis) McCracken.
He was educated in Sayre schools.
He was recently employed in the offices of Dr. Eric Blomain, Scranton. He was formerly employed by the former Capitol Record Co.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and received the American Theater Service Medal.
He was a member of the Moosic Alliance Church, Moosic.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Cloyd.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, the former Hope Webb; daughters , Joyce Quinn, Moosic; and Dawn McCracken, at home; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, 517 N. Main St., Old Forge, with the Rev. Nathan D. King, pastor of the Moosic Alliance Church, officiating.
Interment will be in Springbrook Cemetery, Springbrook, Covington Township.

Margaret McKeever
Margaret S. McKeever, 72, of Washington Square Apartments, Wilkes-Barre, died Saturday at her home.
Born Nov. 6, 1925, in Lee Park, Hanover Township, she was the daughter of the late Adam and Mary Ohls Szakalun.
She attended Lee Park, Lyndwood and Newtown public schools. She graduated from Hanover High School, class of 1943.
She was a Navy veteran of World War II, having served with the USNR-WAVES at Hunter College; U.S. Naval Training Station, Bronx, N.Y.; Oklahoma A & M College; the U.S. Armed Guard Training Center, Norfolk, Va.; and the U.S. Naval Receiving Station, Washington , D.C., where she was honorably discharged in May, 1946.
She began her career with the Veterans Administration, claims adjudication section in Wilkes-Barre. She worked several years at the Philadelphia Regional Office, before her retirement.
She was a member of St. Mary's Church of the Immaculate Conception, Wilkes-Barre; National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Chapter 342; WAVES National and Local Pocono Unit; Disabled American Veterans National and Local Chapter 102, Kingston.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph R. McKeever, on May 20, 1990; and brother, Joseph Szakalun.
Surviving are a daughter, Susan Muth, Bear Creek; grandchildren, Michelle and Brian Muth; sister-in-law, Patricia Szakalun, Wilkes-Barre; brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond McKeever, Cicero, N.Y.; nieces, Barbara Szakalun, Wilkes-Barre, and Kathleen Sellers, Clay, N.Y.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday from McLaughlin Funeral Service, 142 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre, with a Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Church.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township.
