Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

MARY MARONI

Mary M. Maroni, 91, formerly of Old Forge and West Scranton died Monday at the Wesley Village Nursing Facility in Jenkins Township.

Born in Old Forge, she was a daughter of the late Francesco and Catherine Ezzo Manzo.

She attended Old Forge public schools.

She was formerly employed as a seamstress in the area garment industry.

She was a member of St. Ann's Basilica in West Scranton.

She was preceded in death by her brothers , Michael Manzo, Natale Manzo and Louis Manzo; and sisters , Angeline Hopkins and Anne Manzo.

Surviving are her husband, L. Paul Maroni, with whom she celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary in September; son, Paul Maroni, Connecticut; one granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9:15 a.m. Friday from the Victor M. Ferri Funeral Home, 522 Fallon St., Old Forge, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Ann's Basilica on St. Ann's Street in West Scranton, to be celebrated by the Rev. Patrick Geinzer, C.P.

Interment will be in Old Forge Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. There will be a wake service Thursday afternoon.

Marowski, Veronica

March 10, 2000

Veronica Marowski, 72, formerly of Gilligan Street, Wilkes-Barre, died Friday at the Holiday Manor, Scranton.

Funeral arrangements are pending from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, Park Avenue and South Street, Wilkes-Barre.

MARTIN, ETHEL

October 31, 1999

Ethel D. Martin, of Mills Street, Parsons section of Wilkes-Barre, and formerly of Nanticoke, died Sunday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Nanticoke, she was the daughter of the late Clifford and Martha (Langley) Morgan Sr.

She was a member of the Primitive Methodist Church, Nanticoke.

She was formerly employed by Sears and the housekeeping staff of the Nanticoke School District.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James; and daughter, Beverly Jane Berry.

Surviving are her son, James, Sequim, Wash.; seven grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday from the Earl W. Lohman Funeral Home, 14 W. Green St., Nanticoke, with the Rev. Paul Langley and the Rev. Kyle Gildner officiating.

Interment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

MARTIN, JOHN

December 20, 1999

John G. "Pepper" Martin, 73, a former Luzerne Borough councilman, of Bennett Street in Luzerne, died of cancer Monday at home.

A lifelong resident of Luzerne, he was the son of the late John and Anna (Hardik) Martin.

He was a graduate of Luzerne High School and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Before his retirement, he was employed as a supervisor at Keystone Coca Cola Bottling Co. for 38 years.

He was a member of St. John Nepomucene Church in Luzerne, and the parish Holy Name Society, a past commander of the American Legion Post 525 in Luzerne, and was a former school director of the Luzerne High School. He served several terms as councilman in Luzerne.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years, the former Betty Munckatchy; brothers , Michael and Joseph; and sister, Helen Moses.

Surviving are his sons , Gregory, New Jersey; and Douglas, Ohio; daughter, Deborah Lyons, Luzerne; two granddaughters; brothers , Albert, Florida; and Edward, North Carolina; and several nieces.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday from the Lehman-Gregory Funeral Home, Inc., 281 Chapel St., Swoyersville, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. John Nepomucene Church in Luzerne.

Interment will be in Denison Cemetery in Swoyersville.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. A wake service will be conducted today.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the VNA in Wilkes-Barre, or to the Luzerne Ambulance or Fire associations.

STEVE MASLEY

Steve (Iggy) Masley, of Grant Street, Exeter died Saturday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in Carteret, N.J., he was the son of the late Andrew and Anna Pyacky Masley.

Before his retirement he was employed at the Payne Coal Company, Exeter, and Luzerne Products, Plains Township.

He was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, Pittston.

He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal and the Victory Medal.

He was a founder and past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Exeter Post #6518.

He and his wife, the former Agnes Malenda, celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary on June 27.

He was preceded in death by his brothers , John and Andrew; and sister, Anna Viglione.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons , Andrew, Raleigh, N.C.; Donald, Kingston; sisters , Mary Race and Helen Mariani, both of Exeter; Margaret Moss, Elizabeth, N.J.; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday from the Frank A. Gubbiotti Funeral Home, 1030 Wyoming Ave., Exeter, with a funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Church.

Interment will be in St. John's Slovak Cemetery, Exeter.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.

FLORENCE MASON

Florence J. Mason, 84, died Saturday at Crest Haven Nursing Home in Cape May Court House, N.J.

Born in Kingston, she was a former resident of Brigantine, N.J. and Temple Apartments in Edwardsville before residing at Crest Haven Nursing Home.

Surviving are her daughter, Shirley Mason Kallen, Ocean City, N.J.; son, Thomas Mason, Fremont, California; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

There will be a Mass of Christian Burial today at 11 a.m. in St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church at Second and Atlantic avenues in Ocean City, N.J.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church.

Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Mays Landing, N.J.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Crest Haven Nursing Home, Residents Fund, 12 Moore Road, Cape May Court House, N.J. 08210.

Arrangements are by the Chester J. Wimberg Funeral Home in Ocean City, N.J.

Mattei, Celeste

March 3, 2000

Celeste Mattei, of Plains Township, died Friday.

Born Feb. 20, 1910, in Italy, she was the daughter of the late Angelo and Meripe (Lupini) Mattei. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Plains Township, and was formerly employed in the garment industry with Plains Blouse, retiring several years ago.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marino Mattei.

Surviving are her son, Frank Mattei; sister, Piera Nicoletti, Italy; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday from the Yeosock Funeral Home, 40 S. Main St., Plains Township, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church. Entombment will be in Memorial Shrine Park, Carverton. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. A prayer service will be recited this afternoon. Memorial donations may be made to the Plains Township Ambulance Association, PO Box 1562, Plains Township.

Maxwell, Edward

February 12, 2000

Edward J. Maxwell, 51, of Academy Street, Plymouth, died Saturday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born Nov. 15, 1948, in Plymouth, he was the son of Edward and Rosina Jones Maxwell, of Plymouth. He was a graduate of Plymouth High School, class of 1966, and attended Wilkes University and Bloomsburg University. He was a life resident of Plymouth.

He was last employed by the Pennsylvania State Auditor General's Office as a school auditor. He was formerly employed by the Leslie Fay Co. for 20 years. He was a Wyoming Valley West School Director, serving his second term. He was a member of St. Vincent dePaul Church, Plymouth.

He was treasurer for the Plymouth Democratic Club. He was active with the Plymouth Little League as a coach and manager for the Veterans of Foreign Wars team for many years. He was also the coach for several Little League All-Star teams over the years. He and his wife, the former Judy Papula, celebrated their 31st wedding anniversary on Dec. 13.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Judy; children, Christina Maxwell, at home; Scott, Kingston; sisters , Ruth Ann Maxwell, Mountaintop; Nancy Cooper, Plymouth; brothers , Robert, David and John Maxwell, all of Plymouth; one grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday from the S.J. Grontkowski Funeral Home, Plymouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Vincent dePaul Church. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Larksville. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. A prayer service will be held Monday. Memorial donations may be made to the Plymouth Public Library or to the Plymouth Little League.

ANNETTE MAYEWSKI

May 1, 1999

Annette Mayewski, 76, of North Fairhill Street in Philadelphia, and formerly of Nanticoke, died Saturday at Birchwood Nursing Home in Nanticoke.

Born and raised in Nanticoke, she was the daughter of the late Bruno and Agnes Shipkowski Mayewski.

She was a graduate of Nanticoke High School and Mercy Hospital School of Nursing.

She moved to Philadelphia, where she resided for 45 years and was employed as a nurse by the city until retirement.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Bruno; and sister, Irene McGlynn.

Surviving are her sister, Helen, a resident of Birchwood Nursing Home; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday from the Grontkowski Funeral Home, 51-53 W. Green St., Nanticoke, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Church.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday.
