Hischak, John

March 3, 2000

John S. Hischak Sr., 84, of East Grand Street, Nanticoke, died Friday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born Feb. 8, 1916, in Nanticoke, he was the son of the late Michael and Elizabeth Marcinko Hischak. He was a graduate of Nanticoke High School, class of 1935, and was a U.S. Army veteran, serving with the engineering corps in the Philippines.

Before retiring, he was employed by the Glen Alden Coal Co. He was a member of Holy Trinity Church and the American Legion Post 350, both in Nanticoke.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Julia Waznia; daughter, Mary Susan Broz; brothers , Michael and Joseph; sisters , Ann, sisters Mary Hermina and Mary Matthias, both of the Order of SS. Cyril & Methodius.

Surviving are sons , John S. Jr., Parma Heights, Ohio; Thomas, Plymouth; James, Mountaintop; Michael, Brunswick, Md.; Frank, Sparta, N.J.; daughters , Carol Fabian, Shavertown; Ann Marie Emelett, Nanticoke; Julia Fossum, Richmond, Ky.; Jennifer Sabulski, Nanticoke; brother, Thomas, Dayton, Ohio; sisters , Elizabeth Rembelles, Somerset, N.J.; Helen Hriuniak, Rochester, N.Y.; Irene Alfieri, Pompano Beach, Fla.; 22 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

American Legion Post 350 will conduct military funeral services at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday from the Stanley S. Stegura Funeral Home, 614 S. Hanover St., Nanticoke, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in Holy Trinity Church. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Nanticoke. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Hobbs, Lydia

March 1, 2000

Lydia Nesbitt Hobbs, died March 1 in Salem, New Hampshire.

She was born Dec. 16, 1910, in Plymouth Township.

Burial was in Moore Memorial Gardens, Arlington, Texas .

Hodick, Francis

March 28, 2000

Francis Hodick, of Lee Park Avenue, Hanover Township died Tuesday at home.

Born in Nanticoke, he was a son of the late Joseph and Clara (Gorski) Hodick. He attended Bucknell University and Penn State Wilkes-Barre Center. He was a member of the Hanover Township Homeowners Property Association. He was a scouter for over 30 years, receiving the Silver Beaver Award and was an assistant scout master, Troop 33, St. John's Lutheran Church, Wilkes-Barre. He was a draftsman for Foster-Wheeler Corp., Plains Township, and worked at Little Flower Manor, Wilkes-Barre. He was a member of St. Aloysius Church, Wilkes-Barre. He was U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph.

Surviving are his wife, the former Jennie Lucci; daughter, Joy Zimnisky, Jackson, N.J.; son, James, Harveys Lake; five grandchildren; and sister, Bernadyne Skwarlo; Lower Askam, Hanover Township.

A funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Aloysius Church. Interment will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Nanticoke. There will be no calling hours. Funeral arrangements will be by the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 22 Prospect St., Nanticoke.

DANIEL HOFMANN

Daniel Dave Hofmann, of R.R. 2, Poor Farm Road in Carbondale died Thursday at his home.

Born in Upper Darby, he was the son of the late Andrew and Marguerite (Leighton) Hofmann.

He graduated from New York schools.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, receiving the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

He was formerly self-employed as a carpet installer in New York City. He later worked at the Sears Roebuck & Co. warehouse in Wilkes-Barre.

He had lived in Old Forge before settling in Carbondale in June 1997.

Surviving are his wife, the former Mickie Daniels, with whom he celebrated their second wedding anniversary March 30; son, Vincent Hofmann, Long Island, N.Y.; daughters , Lisa Hofmann and Rose Ruiz, both of Long Island; Rosemary Daniels, Greensburg; Bonnie Daniels and Merrilee DeSimone, both of Old Forge; and Jackie Bonitz, Taylor; sisters , Carol Trueson, Fort Myers, Fla.; Andrea McGrath, Hunlock Creek section of Hunlock Township; and Kristen Riddle, Dallas; 10 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday with a blessing service at the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, 517 N. Main St., Old Forge to be celebrated by the Rev. Stanley J. Kurash, of St. Mary's of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church in Old Forge.

Interment will be in Old Forge Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

ANNA HOMETCHKO

Anna (Rusinko) Hometchko, of Chestnut Street in Swoyersville died Wednesday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in Gary, Ind., she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Mary (Petlack) Rusinko.

She was a member of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church in Swoyersville, and the parish Altar and Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Luzerne Senior Citizens.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Hometcho; brothers , Andrew Rusinko, Joseph Rusinko and John Rusinko; and sisters , Mary Rusinko, Helen Rusinko, Susan Rusinko and Julia Rusinko.

Surviving are her daughter, Marie Manta, Swoyersville; son, John Hometchko, Carefree, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday from the Lehman-Gregory Funeral Home Inc., 281 Chapel St., Swoyersville with a Mass of Divine Liturgy at 9:30 a.m. in St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery in Swoyersville.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Parastas services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

HOMICK, BASIL

November 21, 1999

Basil Homick, of Wilkes-Barre, died Sunday at Hospice Care of the VNA, Heritage House, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in the Hudson section of Plains Township, he was the son of the late Theodore and Helen Walko Homick.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater.

He was a charter member of Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church, Wilkes-Barre, where he served as recording secretary and was on the board of trustees for many years. He also was a member of the Carpatho-Russian Citizens Club, the Plains American Legion Post 558, Federation of Orthodox Christians in America, Anthracite Male Choir and RSVP department of Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre.

He was formerly employed as fraternal secretary of the Russian Orthodox Catholic Mutual Aid Society, retiring several years ago.

He was preceded in death by brothers , Theodore, Peter, Paul and John; and sister, Rose Kovelski.

Surviving are his wife, the former Lydia Hopiak Homick; daughter, Elaine Brogan, Hackerstown, N.J.; sister, Anna T. Homick, Wilkes-Barre; brother, Michael Homick, Camp Hill; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday from the Yeosock Funeral Home, 40 S. Main St., Plains Township, with Requiem services at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church, Wilkes-Barre.

Interment will be in Fern Knoll Burial Park, Dallas.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Parastas services will be held at 7:30 p.m., with the Very Rev. David Shewczyk, his pastor, officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the Holy Trinity R.O. Church Memorial Fund.

Wilson Honeywell

May 3, 2000

ilson C. Honeywell, 81, of North Pioneer Avenue, Shavertown, died Wednesday at the Meadows Nursing Center, Dallas.

Born in Shavertown, he was the son of the late Norman and Ethel (Roberts) Honeywell. He attended Kingston Township schools. He was self-employed as a dump truck operator. He was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Shavertown United Methodist Church, where he was a trustee, and member of International Brotherhood of Teamster Local 401, Wilkes Barre.

He was preceded in death by sisters , Hazel Lohman; and Genevieve Price; and grandson, Hugh Hall.

Surviving are his wife, the former Hazel Meeker; daughter, Barbara Hall Wynn, Dallas; two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and sister, Martha Newberry, Birmingham, Ala.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday from the Richard H. Disque Funeral Home Inc., 672 Memorial Highway, Dallas, with the Rev. Douglas A. Clark officiating. Friends may from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Memorial donations may be made to Leukemia Society of America, 2401 Pennsylvania Ave., Philadelphia.

Gloria Howard

May 20, 1998

Gloria Dawn Howard, 63, of Fort Jenkins Lane, Bloomsburg, died Wednesday at the Bloomsburg Health Care Center after a lengthy illness and was a patient for four days.

Born May 29, 1937, in Berwick, she was the daughter of the late George and Helen Bankes Gottshall.

She attended Berwick schools.

For the past 33 years, she was employed by Consolidated Cigar Co., Berwick.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rosemary Holly Mills, in 1991; a sister, Laura Mae Gottshall, in 1946; a half-brother, Charles Naus, in 1993.

Surviving are a son, John W. Howard II, with whom she resided; a daughter, Carolyn L. Whitmire, Berwick; brothers , George, Bloomsburg; Barton, Benton; sisters , Joanne Pasquale and Mrs. Daniel (Dorothy) Grasley, both of Berwick; seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday from the Heller Funeral Home, Nescopeck, with the Rev. Michael Boggs officiating.

Interment will be in Rose Lawn Cemetery, Berwick.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

HRIVNAK, MARTHA

November 5, 1999

Martha M. Hrivnak, of Church Street in Swoyersville died Friday in Hospice of the VNA at Heritage House in Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Swoyersville, she was a daughter of the late Steven Sholtis and Mary Barry Sholtis. She was educated in Swoyersville schools.

Before her retirement, she worked as a seamstress at United Pants in Swoyersville and Forty Fort Blouse Co.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Church in Swoyersville.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Emil Sholtis Sr.

Surviving are her husband of four years, John A. Hrivnak; sister, Thelma A. Kopec, Garfield, N.J.; Romaine Kocik, West Wyoming; Florence Shutlak, Blasdell, N.Y.; Emily Polk, Mountaintop; and Rose Marie Drobenak, Bradenton, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and one great-great-nephew.

Private funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Monday from the Lehman-Gregory Funeral Home, Inc., 281 Chapel St., Swoyersville, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Trinity Church. The Rev. Michael Zipay will officiate.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery in Swoyersville.

There will be no calling hours.

HUGHES, JOHN

October 27, 1999

John H. Hughes Jr., 76, of South 82nd Street in Harrisburg, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, died Wednesday at the Villa Theresa Nursing Home in Lower Paxton Township.

Born March 21, 1923, in Hanover Township, he was the son of the late John H. and Elizabeth (Jones) Hughes.

He retired as an electronic technician for the New Cumberland Army Depot and the former Olmsted Air Force Base in Middletown.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Catherine A. (Wolfe) Hughes; sister, Louise Culp, Dallas; one niece and three nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 W. Main St., Hummelstown. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Lower Paxton Township.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of services Saturday.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease & Related Disorders Association, South Central Pennsylvania Chapter, 2001 N. Front St., Building 2, Suite 321, Harrisburg, 17102.
