James Hand

May 22, 1998

James A. Hand, 85, died Friday at St. Peter's Medical Center, New Brunswick, N.J.

He was born in Wilkes-Barre and resided in Forty Fort before moving to South River, N.J. in 1957.

Before retiring in 1977, he was a machine operator for Okonite Wire and Cable Co., first in Pennsylvania , then in North Brunswick, N.J. when the company moved there. He worked for Okonite for 49 years.

He was a longtime active member, past Elder, past deacon, and usher at Trinity Presbyterian Church, East Brunswick. He also served in the church kitchen for many years.

He was a 50-year active member of the New Brunswick Lodge of International Order of Odd Fellows.

He served as a volunteer at Roosevelt Hospital, Edison, N.J., for many years, logging over 4,000 hours of volunteer time.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice E. Hill Hand, in 1986.

Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Lebron, Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; sister, Alice Hughes, Forty Fort; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services, under the direction of The Brunswick Memorial Home, 454 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick, N.J., will be Tuesday at a time to be announced at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 367 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick, N.J.

Interment will follow at Washington Monumental Cemetery, South River, N.J.

Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at The Brunswick Memorial Home, 454 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick, N.J.

Memorial donations may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church, 367 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick, N.J., 08816.

Hanley, Janet

April 28, 2000

Janet (Zeveney) Hanley of Breslau, Hanover Township, died Friday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born May 10, 1923, in Breslau, she was a daughter of the late Alexander and Albina Zeveney.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fritz; brothers , Stanley, Ronald, Theodore and Alphonso; and sister, Josephine.

Surviving are her brother, Anthony Zeveney, Plymouth; sister, Connie Grant, Breslau; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at a later date. There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Frederick C. Chandler Funeral Home, Plains Township.

Leslie Hargreaves

April 17, 1998

Leslie W. Hargreaves, of West Auburn, Auburn Township, Susquehanna County, died Friday at the Tyler Memorial Hospital, Tunkhannock.

Born in Philadelphia, Aug. 4, 1903, he was the son of the late James Lewis and Mary Ann Staje Hargreaves.

Before retiring, he worked for five years at the H. Britton Co. and for 25 years at the Philadelphia Bulletin.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margarite, in 1990; brothers Harold and Wesley; sisters Marion Annear and Emma Denberger.

Surviving is a daughter, Joy Yunag, Riverside, Calif.; stepdaughter, Barbara Shank, Virginia; five grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main Street, Laceyville, with the Rev. Kenneth Bitler officiating.

Interment will be in the Retta Cemetery, Retta.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2 p.m. until the time of services.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Society.

HARRISON, BERTHA

December 9, 1999

Bertha Harrison, 71, of Laurel Run Estates, died Thursday in the Inpatient Unit of Hospice Care of the VNA at Heritage House in Wilkes-Barre.

Born March 28, 1928, in Elizabeth, N.J., she was a daughter of the late Michael and Marcy Anna Chowaniec. She moved to the Wyoming Valley in 1947.

She was formerly employed for many years in the local garment industry.

She was a member of St. Boniface Church in Wilkes-Barre, and the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry; infant daughter, Maryann; brothers , John and Edward; and sisters , Helen Pucylowski, Mildred Brown and Ann Martin.

Surviving are her daughter, Henrietta Schooley, Trucksville, Kingston Township; sons , John, Wilkes-Barre; and Harry, Ashley; companion, George Evans, Laurel Run Estates; eight grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, Park Avenue and South Street, Wilkes-Barre, with a funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Boniface Church. Interment will be in Kocher Cemetery at Harveys Lake.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice Care of the VNA in Wilkes-Barre.

Mary Haslin

April 17, 1998

Mary Haslin, of Poplar Street, Plains Township, died Friday in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

She was a lifelong resident of Plains.

Born in Plains, she was daughter of the late Simon and Antoinette Kraynak Figel.

She was educated in the Plains Township public school system.

Before retiring, she was employed as a seamstress for Leslie Fay Dress Co. Inc.

She was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Wilkes-Barre.

She was a member of the International Ladies' Garment Workers Union.

She was a member of the North End Club and the Sunshine Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; son, George; infant son, Joseph; sister, Catherine Gilligan; and brother, John.

Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. William (Shirley) Norwillo, Jenkins Township; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters Ann Haslin, Plains; Alice Janeski, Essex, Md.; brother, Michael Figel, Plains; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday from the Simon S. Russin Funeral Home Inc., 136 Maffett St., Plains, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Wilkes-Barre, with the Rev. Gerard Safko officiating.

Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Plains.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Christian Wake service will be held Monday with the Rev. Mr. Joseph DaVizia officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice St. John, 665 Carey Ave., Wilkes-Barre, 18702.

HELEN HASK

April 24, 1999

Helen Hask, of Park Avenue in Wilkes-Barre died Saturday.

Born April 29, 1926, in Wilkes-Barre, she was a daughter of the late Nicholas and Anastasia Mickulick.

A graduate of the James M. Coughlin High School, she resided in the area her entire life.

She was formerly self-employed as a beautician. She was later employed by various dress factories throughout the Wyoming Valley.

She was preceded in death by her brothers , Peter, Michael and Joseph, and sisters , Anna Mickulick and Mary Patts.

Surviving are her son, David Hask, Wilkes-Barre; brother, Nicholas, Wilkes-Barre Township; sister, Julia Hager, Valley Crest; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today at Maple Hill Cemetery Chapel in Hanover Township, with the Rev. Joseph Streit officiating.

Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Hanover Township.

Havick, Helen

January 26, 2000

Helen Havick, formerly of Holly Street Witinski Villa, Hanover Township, died Wednesday in the Hospice Unit of Heritage House, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Jersey City, she was a daughter of the late John and Anna (Burak) Havick. She worked for Eberhard Faber Co., Mountaintop. She was a member of St. John's Orthodox Church, Hanover section of Nanticoke, and the parish choir.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Steven.

Surviving are her brother, Andrew, of Connecticut; sister, Eva Peplowski, of Warrior Run; nieces and nephews.

Divine Liturgy will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in St. John's Orthodox Church. Interment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Arrangements were made by the Anthony J. Jastremski Funeral Home, Ashley.

HAWKSLEY, BERTHA

October 30, 1999

Bertha M. (Hoyes) Hawksley, 78, of Orlando, Fla., died Saturday in Orlando Regional Sand Lake Medical Center, Orlando.

Born in Peckville, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Pearl (Miller) Hoyes.

She graduated from Blakely High School and Lackawanna Business School, Scranton.

She resided in Orlando for 18 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Roger Hawksley, who was killed in the Invasion of Normandy during World War II; and daughter, Leslie Ann McConnell.

Surviving are one grandson; brothers , Robert M. Hoyes, Shavertown; George F. Hoyes, Forty Fort; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday from the Hugh B. Hughes & Son, Inc., Funeral Home, 1044 Wyoming Ave., Forty Fort, with the Rev. Donald A. Roberts Sr. officiating.

Interment will be in Forty Fort Cemetery.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

HAYES, JEANETTE

October 30, 1999

Jeanette E. Hayes, 95, formerly of Wilkes-Barre and Hempstead, Long Island, N.Y., died Saturday at Wesley Village in Jenkins Township.

Born Dec. 19, 1903, in Tower City, she was a daughter of the late Simon and Jennie (Simmons) Evans. She was a graduate of Coughlin High School.

She was a member of Parrish Street United Methodist Church and a charter member of Women's Society for Christian Service of the United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Hayes; brothers , Earl, Lester, Clark and Lynn; and sister, Mildred Evans.

Surviving are her sons , Robert E., Slidell, La.; and Thomas E., Honolulu, Hawaii; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one niece and one nephew.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday in Parrish Street United Methodist Church in Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be in Fern Knoll Burial Park in Dallas. The Rev. E. Susan Wenner will officiate.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Kniffen O'Malley Funeral Home, Inc., 465 S. Main St., Wilkes-Barre.
