GOOBIC, DONALD

Donald Goobic, of Bald Mountain Road in Bear Creek Township died Friday at his home.
Born in the Hudson section of Plains Township, he was a son of Anna (Kropcho) Goobic, of Hudson, and the late Michael Goobic.
He was a 1951 graduate of Plains Memorial High School and a graduate of Wilkes College and the University of Scranton, where he received his master's degree.
He served with the U.S. Army in Germany.
He was a guidance counselor in the Wyoming Valley West School District for 33 years, retiring in 1998.
He was a charter member of Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church on East Main Street in Wilkes-Barre. He was also a member of the Wyoming Valley West Education Association, the Pennsylvania State Education Association, the National Education Association, the Polish American Club of Hudson and Carpato Russian Citizen Club of Hudson.
Surviving, in addition to his mother , are his wife, Mary Ann King Goobic; daughter, Nicole Burns, Hudson; brothers , Michael, Westfield, N.J.; Jonah, Shickshinny; and Peter, Fairfax, Va.; and grandson, Joshua Burns.
Funeral services will be Monday at 9 a.m. from the Yeosock Funeral Home, 40 S. Main St., Plains Township, with a Requiem service at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church. Interment will be in Fern Knoll Burial Park in Dallas.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. David Shewczyk will conduct a Parastas service at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
Memorial donations may be made to Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church or Northeast Health & Hospice in Pittston.
JOSEPH GORMAN
April 25, 1999
Joseph R. Gorman, Esq., 52, of Vista Drive in Tunkhannock, died Sunday in an accident at Harveys Lake.
Born Aug. 19, 1946, in Jenkins Township, he was the son of the late Leo Gorman and Mary Norton.
He was a graduate of St. John's High School, Pittston, class of 1964, and East Stroudsburg University. He received a law degree from Capital University School of Law, Columbus, Ohio.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of Vietnam.
He was self-employed in an attorney's office on Warren Street in Tunkhannock.
He was a member of Nativity B.V.M. Church, Tunkhannock; Tunkhannock Kiwanis Club, past president and past lieutenant governor of District 15 Kiwanis. He helped start the Wyoming County Kiwanis Fair, where he was on the legal committee and served as a volunteer. He was a solicitor for the Wyoming County Housing and Redevelopment Authority, former solicitor of the Tunkhannock Area School District and a member of the Tunkhannock Literary Board. He was a member of the board of directors of Tyler Memorial Hospital and president of the Wyoming-Sullivan Bar Association.
He was preceded in death by his step mother , Mary Reardon.
Surviving are his brother, Leo, Jenkins Township; fiancee, Kathleen Valkenburg, Dunmore; future step daughter, Kristen; two aunts and several cousins.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday from Harding-Litwin Funeral Home, 123 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock, with Mass at 11 a.m. in Nativity B.V.M. Church.
Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery, Pittston.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Goss, William
March 8, 2000
William G. Goss, 82, of Furnace Street, Shickshinny, died Wednesday at home.
Born April 18, 1917, in Bethel Hill, he was a son of the late Shad and Sara (Wilkinson) Goss. He graduated from Dallas Township High School. He retired as district manager after 15 years with AFLAC Insurance Co. He also worked for other insurance companies and the state Department of Revenue. He was a Luzerne County commissioner from 1964 to 1968, Luzerne County treasurer from 1972 to 1974, a former chairman of the Luzerne County Republican Party, past president of the Shickshinny Area Ambulance Association, and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Shickshinny, St. David's Society, the Republican National Committee, the AARP, Osage Lodge, IOOF; Sylvania Lodge, F&AM; Valley of Bloomsburg Scottish Rite Masons, Mount Horeb Council 34; Shekinah Royal Arch Chapter 45; Dieu Le Veut Commandery 45 and Irem Temple AAONMS.
Surviving are his wife, the former Marjorie Ide, whom he married March 8, 1942; sons , Larry, East Rutherford, N.J.; and Dennis, Shickshinny; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; and brother, Basil, Williamsport.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday from the First United Methodist Church of Shickshinny. The Rev. Dean A. Walrath and the Rev. William Price, retired United Methodist minister, will officiate. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Shickshinny. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the church. Memorial donations may be made to the March of Dimes or to a charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements are by the Mayo Funeral Home, Inc., 77 N. Main St., Shickshinny. Sylvania Lodge 354, F&AM, will conduct Masonic services.
HOWARD GOWER
April 25, 1999
Howard "Piff" Gower, 70, of the Northeastern Veterans Center of Scranton, and formerly of Center Street in Freeland, died Sunday at Mercy Hospital in Scranton.
Born in White Haven, he was the son of the late John and Eve (Kramer) Gower.
He resided in the White Haven area most of his life and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was a retired steel worker, having worked in the steel mills in the Phoenixville area.
He was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Freeland.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Jean Gower.
Surviving are five children; brothers , Arthur and Harold Gower, both of White Haven; sister, Ruth Loughridge, Alexandria, Va.; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday from the Joseph E. Lehman Funeral Home, Inc., 403 Berwick St., White Haven, with the Rev. Manuel Stivers, Pastor of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Freeland, officiating.
Interment will be in Laurel Cemetery, White Haven.
Friends may call after 10 a.m. Wednesday.
ESTHER GRABOW
April 27, 1999
Esther M. Grabow, 96, of Wilkes-Barre died Tuesday at Heritage House in Wilkes-Barre following a brief illness.
Born in the Bronx, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Alex and Tillie McEnick. She had resided in Newton, N.J., for most of her life, moving to Wilkes-Barre in 1997.
She was a partner with her husband, the late Mack S. Grabow, in the former Gray Department Stores in Newton, Branchville and Sussex, N.J. for many years.
She was a former president of the Sussex County (N.J.) Jewish Center, and was the first female member of the board of trustees at the center. She was also a past member of the Newton PTA.
Surviving are her daughter, Sue Costello, Mountaintop; granddaughter, Toby Costello, grandson, Erik Costello, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will at 10 a.m. today from the Iliff-Ruggiero Funeral Home, 156 Main St., (state Route 206), Newton, N.J. 07860. Entombment will follow in the Cedar Park Sanctuary of Abraham and Sarah in Paramus, N.J.

Jane Green
April 25, 1998
Jane Green, of Lake Winola died Saturday in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Born in Pittston, July 6, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Griffith and Mary Slater Hastie.
She graduated from Pittston High School and attended Cedar Crest College.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Green; sister, Mary Mitchell.
Surviving are her brother, Aaron Hastie, West Pittston; several nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours.
A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements are by the Howell-Lussi Funeral Home, 509 Wyoming Ave., West Pittston.
Robert Gregory
April 17, 1998
Robert J. Gregory, 64, of Garden Village Apartments, West Pittston, died Friday at the Hospice Care of the VNA, Heritage House, Wilkes-Barre.
Born in Forty Fort, he was son of the late Eugene and Anna Proudlove Gregory.
Before his retirement, he was employed by Kerr McGee Co., Duryea, and was last employed at the Tobyhanna Army Depot for 17 years.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and served during the
Korean War. He was also a member of the Marine reserves.
He was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, Pittston, and a former member of its Holy Name Society.
He and his wife, the former Margaret Ciotola, would have celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary on April 22.
He was preceded in death by brothers , John, Daniel and William, and a sister, Helen Bell.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Kelley Ann Gregory, Alexandria, Va.; brothers , Eugene, Dansville, N.Y.; James, Bear Creek Township; sisters , Carol Williams, Kingston; Mary Ann Martinsky, Forty Fort.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Monday from the Frank A. Gubbiotti Funeral Home, 1030 Wyoming Ave., Exeter, with a funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Church.
Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Exeter.

Griffiths, Ellen

Ellen C. Griffiths, 85, of Lloyds Lane in Wilkes-Barre, died Wednesday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Born Dec. 20, 1914, in Plains Township, she was the daughter of the late Richard H. and Ada (Hands) Scutt. She was 1933 graduate of Plains Memorial High School.
She was a member of First Welsh Presbyterian Church and the parish Friendship Class.
Before retiring, she was employed as a seamstress for Charles Dress Co. She was also employed by Woolworth's and Shapiro's Fur Coats.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas.
Surviving are her daughter, Elizabeth Rowland; three grandchildren; brother, William Scutt, of Bear Creek; and two nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday from the Kniffen O'Malley Funeral Home, Inc., 465 S. Main St., Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be in Hanover Green Cemetery. The Rev. George B. Johnson, of First Welsh Presbyterian Church, will officiate.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.

Grimes, David
January 25, 2000
David A. Grimes, 74, of Dan Flood Towers, Kingston, died Tuesday at HCR ManorCare, Kingston.
Born April 5, 1925, in Kingston, he was a son of the late Maurice J. and Mary (Hurley) Grimes. He was a 1943 graduate of Kingston High School, and a graduate of Wyoming Seminary Dean School of Business, the University of Delaware and the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Campus. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theater. He was formerly associated with Grimes Auto Glass.
He was a member of St. Ignatius Parish Community, Kingston; Friendly sons of St. Patrick of Greater Wilkes-Barre; Veterans of Foreign Wars Anthracite Post 283, Kingston; and Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 9. He was a past commander of American Legion Post 395, Kingston; and until his death, treasurer of the Penn State Club of Wyoming Valley.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Margaret Houston Grimes.
Surviving are his sons , David M., M. Joseph and James, all of Kingston; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and brother, Joseph, Dallas.
Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday from McLaughlin Funeral Service, Kingston, with a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Ann's Chapel, Kingston. Interment will be in St. Ignatius Cemetery, Pringle. Friends may call from 6 to 9 this evening. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Residents Council of HCR ManorCare.
Dorothy Groblowski
Dorothy Groblowski, of Oplinger Towers in Nanticoke died Thursday at Mercy Hospital in Wilkes-Barre.
The former Dorothy Schwartz, she was born in Nanticoke.
She was formerly employed at the Duplan Mill in Nanticoke and later operated a beauty shop in Nanticoke for 30 years.
She was a member of St. Stanislaus Church in Nanticoke, and the parish Sacred Heart Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Groblowski.
Surviving are nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday from the Earl W. Lohman Funeral Home, 14 W. Green St., Nanticoke with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Church.
Interment will be in the parish cemetery in Nanticoke.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. The Sacred Heart Society will recite the Rosary at 2:45 p.m. Sunday.
