GILPIN, JABEZ

October 31, 1999

Jabez "Jack" Gilpin, 82, of Lake Winola, died Sunday at his home following an illness.

His widow is the former Mary Headley. The couple celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary in July.

Born June 29, 1917, in Sterling, he was a son of the late Raymond and Alice (Davies) Gilpin.

He resided in the Lake Winola area all of his life.

Prior to retirement, he was a self-employed dairy farmer and machinist.

He was the former treasurer of the Wyoming County Federation of Sportsman Clubs for 30 years, a charter member of the Mill City Sportsman's Club, the Lake Winola Fire Company, the National Rifle Association, and the 76ers Camping Club Chapter 29.

He was a Republican Committeeman in Overfield Township for many years.

He was preceded in death by sons , Walter, Ronald, Robert, and Jay; brothers , Raymond, Harry, and Marvin; and a grandson.

Surviving are sons , James, Centermoreland; Richard and Ralph, Lake Winola; David, Newton Township;, Marvin, West Pittston; and Melvin, Dalton; daughters , Joan Dymond, Lake Winola; and Carol Kooms, Suscon; a sister, Olive McConnell, Scranton; 18 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday from the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit, with services by the Rev. Orland Romig, pastor, First Baptist Church, Sayre.

Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Mill City.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to Moses Taylor Dialysis Unit, c/o Tyler Memorial Hospital, 880 SRLW, Tunkhannock, 18657.

Joseph Ginthner

May 24, 1998

Joseph C. Ginthner Sr., 54, of Almond Lane, Wilkes-Barre, died Sunday at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, May 1, 1944, he was a son of Helen Davis Ginthner of Wilkes-Barre and the late John Ginthner.

He was a 1962 graduate of St. Nicholas High School.

He served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

He was employed as a sheet metal worker and was a former financial secretary/treasurer of Local 44 of the Sheet Metal Workers Union.

He was a member of St. Nicholas Church, South Washington Street, Wilkes-Barre, where he also served as an acolyte.

He was a former secretary/treasurer of the Elks Club, Wilkes-Barre.

He and his wife, the former Carol Ann Orzechowski, celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary on May 10, 1998.

He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Ginthner, in 1988.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are daughter, Juli Ann Swank, Plains; sons Joseph C. Ginthner Jr., Miners Mills; David Ginthner, at home; brother, John Ginthner, San Jose, Calif.; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 9 a.m. Wednesday from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, Park Avenue and South Street, Wilkes-Barre, with a funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Nicholas Church.

Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Shavertown.

Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Gittins, Bert

February 22, 2000

Bert E. Gittins, 99, of R.R 3, Wyoming, died Tuesday at the Meadows Nursing Center, Dallas.

Funeral arrangements are pending from the Metcalfe & Shaver Funeral Home, Inc., 504 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming.

GLENNON, CAROL

October 3, 1999

Carol J. (Yost) Luberecki Glennon, 61, who resided at Wesley Village Nursing Home, Pittston Township, formerly of Shamokin and Elysburg, died Sunday after an illness.

Born Aug. 24, 1938, in Shamokin, she was a daughter of Calvin Yost Sr., Shamokin, and the late Shirley (Weitzel) Yost.

She was a 1956 graduate of Shamokin High School.

She was formerly employed as a secretary with Boeing Corporation Helicopter Division, Philadelphia, as blood services coordinator with the American Red Cross, Shamokin, and as a secretary at Southern Columbia High School. She also worked for the Northumberland County Sheriff's Office.

She was the first woman president of the Ralpho Township All Home Days Association. She was a board member of the American Heart Association. She volunteered at the Shamokin V.N.A., the Shamokin Hospital and the Wesley Village Gift Shop.

She attended Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Shamokin, and Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Church, Elysburg.

Surviving in addition to her Father are her husband, Patrick Glennon, Prospect Park; daughters , Laurie Chiumento, Pittston; and Lynn Snyder, Elysburg; brother, Calvin Yost Jr., Elysburg; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Northumberland Memorial Park Cemetery, Route 61, Stonington, with Richard Hazzard of the Trinity Episcopal Church, Shamokin, officiating. Relatives and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:45 a.m.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Leonard J. Lucas Funeral Home Ltd., 120 S. Market St., Shamokin.

DAVID GLIDDON

David J. Gliddon, 56, of East Grove Street, Nanticoke died Sunday at the family home.

Born Jan. 14, 1942, in Glen Lyon, he was the son of Thomas O. Gliddon, Alden, and the late Margaret Schraeder Gliddon.

He resided in Alden before moving to Nanticoke.

He was a graduate of Newport High School, class of 1959, and he attended Luzerne County Community College.

He was a member of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, Kingston.

He was last employed at the Youth Forestry Camp 2 at the Hickory Run State Park, White Haven, as a counselor and a training coordinator. He was a certified reality therapist.

He was the recipient of the Department of Public Welfare Secretaries' Award for excellence.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, stationed in Germany.

He and his wife, the former Doris Harabin, celebrated their 22nd wedding anniversary on June 12.

Surviving, in addition to his Father and wife, are a son, David G., student at Penn State University, University Park; brother, Thomas, Otego, N.Y.; and sister, Virginia Maddy, Alden.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday from the S.J. Grontkowski Funeral Home, 530 W. Main St., Plymouth, with Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, Kingston.

Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Pringle.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

A Parastas service will be Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. Ted Krepp officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the David J. Gliddon Memorial Fund.

Edward Godleski

May 22, 1998

Edward F. Godleski, a retired U.S. Air Force senior master sergeant, 73, of South Sherman Street, Wilkes-Barre, died Friday at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born Aug. 10, 1924, in Sugar Notch, he was the son of the late Edward S. and Margaret McCabe Godleski.

He was a 1942 graduate of GAR Memorial High School, Wilkes-Barre, and through military studies, completed two years of college.

He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Upon re-enlistment, he served in the U.S. Air Force with the Strategic Air Command and the Air Defense Command, retiring in 1966 with the rank of senior master sergeant. He was a recipient of Flight Crew Member Wings, Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with 2 Battle Stars and 6 Service Ribbons.

After his retirement from the service, he was employed as a foreman and assistant quality control supervisor for the Owens-Illinois Co., retiring in 1983.

He was a member of St. Mary's Church of the Maternity, Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre; the Plains American Legion Post 558; the Kingston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 283; the Retired Enlisted Association, Washington , D.C.

He and his wife, the former Helen C. Dudek, celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary on Aug. 6.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons , Edward Godleski, Wilkes-Barre, a patrolman with the Wilkes-Barre Police Department; Paul Godleski, Cleveland; Mark Godleski, Wilkes-Barre Township; five grandchildren; sisters , Cecelia Stepchuk and Rita Keslensky, Clearwater, Fla.; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, Park Avenue and South Street, Wilkes-Barre, with a funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Church of the Maternity.

Entombment will be in St. Mary's Mausoleum, Hanover Township.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

GOECKEL, WILLIAM

October 30, 1999

William F. "Bill" Goeckel, 73, of York Avenue, Towanda, died Saturday at his home.

Born Sept. 19, 1926, in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Stanley A. and Laura (Burns) Goeckel.

He was a graduate of GAR High School, class of 1944.

He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Pope in the North Atlantic during World War II.

He attended the University of Scranton upon completion of his military service and was later employed by the Internal Revenue Service from 1948 to 1959. He operated his own accounting and tax consulting business in Towanda for many years, before retiring in 1975. He owned and operated the Towanda Motel since 1961.

He moved to Naples, Fla., in 1978 and returned to Towanda in 1981.

He was active in the Towanda Little League in the 1950s and served as a coach. He was a member of the American Legion Post 42, Elks Lodge 2191 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1568, all in Towanda; and was a former member of the Towanda Country Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances L. Cease Goeckel.

Surviving are his children, Laura E. Hughes, Marlowe, England; Craig F. Goeckel, Naples, Fla.; William Gary Goeckel, Wysox; brother, Gerald C. Goeckel, Wilkes-Barre; sister, Marilyn Mahoney, Langhorne; one granddaughter; three step grandsons; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday in SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Third Street, Towanda, with the Rev. Ronald Hughes officiating.

Interment will be in Mt. Greenwood Cemetery, Trucksville.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda.

Memorial donations may be made to the Towanda Little League, c/o Judy Howard, secretary, RR 2, Box 247 1R, Wysox, 18864, or to the charity of the donor's choice.

RUTH KAUFMAN GOLDSTEIN

Ruth Kaufman Goldstein, of Jenner Drive, Baltimore, Md., died Saturday in Sinai Hospital, Baltimore, Md.

Born in Exeter, she was the daughter of the late Abraham and Golda Foss Kaufman.

She was a graduate of West Pittston High School and the Wyoming Seminary School of Business.

Before retirement she was employed as a comptroller by Atlas Industries and as a bookkeeper in Temple Israel, both in Scranton.

She was a member of Beth Shalom Congregation and its Sisterhood. She was a life member of Hadassah, B'Nai B'Rith Women and the Jewish War Veterans Women's Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hyman S. Goldstein, in 1990.

Surviving are daughters , Sharon Zuckerbrod, Baltimore, Md.; Carol Steifel, Miami, Fla.; son, Marvin Goldstein, Potomac, Md.; sister, Marian Sunness, Scranton; nine grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. today from the Ziman Funeral Home, 612 Gibson St., Scranton, with Rabbi Avroham Herman officiating.

Interment will be in Dalton Jewish Cemetery.

Shiva will be observed at the residence of her sister, Marian Sunness, 729 Monroe Ave., Scranton.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Gomez, Laura

April 7, 2000

Laura Gomez, 91, of Oxford Street, Lee Park, Hanover Township, died Friday at the Davis Manor, Mountaintop.

Born Jan. 8, 1909, in the Dominican Republic, she was the daughter of the late Pedro and Elvira Castillo. She attended schools in the Dominican Republic. She was self-employed as a seamstress.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Octavio.

Suriviving are her daughter, Elvira, with whom she resided; son, Octavio, Dominican Republic; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at the convenience of the family from the S.J. Grontkowski Funeral Home, 530 W. Main St., Plymouth. Interment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Hanover Township.
