L. Willard George

May 20, 1998

L. Willard George, 83, a former resident of Slocum Township, died Wednesday at the Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born Nov. 6, 1914, in Slocum Township, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Minnie Arnold George.

He was employed for 40 years as a route delivery driver for the former Vaughn's Bakery, Berwick. He also operated two grocery stores in Slocum Township.

Following his retirement, he was employed as a school bus driver for Deets-Rinehimer Bus Co.

He was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church, Slocum Township, and was an adult class Sunday School teacher and church trustee. He also served as superintendent of both the Faith United Methodist and Stairville United Methodist churches.

He served as a Slocum Township Supervisor, a board member of the Crestwood School District and a director of the Stairville Cemetery Association.

He was one of the founders of the Mountaintop Ambulance Association, the Mountaintop Little League and the Slocum Volunteer Fire Co.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Dorothy Watkins, in 1981; a granddaughter, Lianne Kaska Lambriola; sisters , Ruth Heller, Viola Kivler and Louise George; brothers , Russell, James and Harry.

Surviving are daughters , Joan Crawford, Crofton, Md.; Eilene Kaska and Doris Yeager, both of Mountaintop; a son, Willard L., Dorrance Township; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday from the Faith United Methodist Church, Slocum Township, with the Rev. Jane Bensley, pastor, officiating.

Interment will be in Stairville Cemetery, Dorrance Township.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Graham-McCune Funeral Home, 80 S. Mountain Blvd., Mountaintop.

Memorial donations may be made to the Mountaintop Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 63, Mountaintop, 18707, or to Faith United Methodist Church, RR 1, Box 303-B, Wapwallopen, 18660.

George, Margaret

March 9, 2000

Margaret George, of Academy Street, Wilkes-Barre, died Thursday at Dorrance Manor, Kingston.

Born July 28, 1919, in Hazleton, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Ella (McBraiety) Schaefer. She was a 1938 graduate of Hazleton High School. She was a member of St. Mary's of the Immaculate Conception Church, Wilkes-Barre.

Surviving are her husband of 61 years, Peter J.,; daughters , Margaret A. George, Edwardsville; Judith Schmid, Dallas; and Donna McAdarra, Wilkes-Barre; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and sisters , Marion O'Neill, Wilkes-Barre; Helen Dushner, Springfield, Mass.; Lucille Broghamer, Dallas; Ann Foley, Hatboro; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Walter "Gordon"; and sister, Catherine Warnick.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Monday from the Mamary-Durkin Funeral Service, 59 Parrish St., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary's of the Immaculate Conception Church. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

GEORGETTI, LAURENCE

September 30, 1999

Laurence (Larry) M. Georgetti, 48, of Lehman Township, died Thursday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital after being stricken ill at home.

Born in the Miners Mills section of Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of Robert and Helen Backiel Georgetti, of Miners Mills.

He attended Wilkes-Barre area schools and was a 1968 graduate of Coughlin High School. He was also a 1974 graduate of Mansfield University with a bachelor of science degree in special education.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War, attaining the rank of sergeant.

He was employed as a special education teacher for the State Correctional Institution at Retreat in Newport Township for the past 23 years.

He was a coach and manager for Back Mountain Youth Soccer and Back Mountain Little League, and a PTA parent and basketball coach for Lehman and Jackson schools. As a member of the Luzerne County Recreation Board, he supported handicapped activities. He was a football official for the Wyoming Valley Mickey Noonan Chapter for over 20 years.

He was a former member of St. Francis Church in Wilkes-Barre and its Holy Name Society, and a member of Joseph E. Conlon American Legion Post 558 in Plains Township, the Lay Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary; and Gate of Heaven Church in Dallas, where he served as a lector and CCD instructor.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife of 19 years, the former Lori Wenhold, and sons , Angelo and Marcus, all at home; brothers , Luke, Winterville, N.C.; and Gary, Wilkes-Barre; and sister, Pamela Georgetti, Minneapolis, Minn.

Funeral services will be Monday at 9 a.m. from the Mark V. Yanaitis Funeral Home, 55 Stark St., Plains Township, with a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in Gate of Heaven Church. Interment will be in St. Ann's Cemetery in Lehman Township. military services will be conducted at the cemetery by members of the Plains American Legion Post 558.

Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lay Servants, 11 Laurel St., Edwardsville, 18704; Gate of Heaven Church, 10 Machell St., Dallas, 18612-1699; Luzerne County Association of Retarded Citizens, 243 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre, 18701; and the American Heart Association in Wilkes-Barre.

FRANK GERALD

June 29, 1999

Frank Gerald, 96, formerly of Lehman Township died Tuesday at Valley Crest Nursing Home in Plains Township.

Born in Luzerne, he was a son of the late Joseph and Mary (Leskosky) Gerald. He lived in Luzerne most of his life before moving to Lehman Township about 25 years ago.

He was a coal miner most of his life, but before his retirement, he worked as a carpenter for many contractors in the area.

He was a member of St. Ann's Church in Luzerne.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Elizabeth Kamus; son, Francis; brother, Vincent; and sister, Elizabeth Paxtaus.

Surviving are his daughters , Mary Kazokas, Wyalusing; and Helen Major, Lehman Township; son, Jerome, West Chester; sisters , Mary Mizenko, Swoyersville; Helen Samanas, East Mountain Manor; and Florence Verosky, Edwardsville; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday from the Betz-Jastremski Funeral Home, Inc., 568 Bennett St., Luzerne, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Ann's Church. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Pringle.

Friends may call from 8 a.m. until the time of services Thursday.

Gibeck, Teresa

March 9, 2000

Teresa Gibeck, of South Main Street, Ashley, died Thursday in Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Funeral arrangements are pending from from the Leo P. Funeral Home, 689 Hazle Ave., Wilkes-Barre.

Frank Gigliotti

May 14, 1998

Frank J. Gigliotti, of Wyoming Street, Wilkes-Barre, died May 14 at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Ashley, he was son of the late Daniel Gigliotti and Lucy Gagliardi.

He was a member of Holy Rosary Church, Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Parsons Post 6227.

Surviving are his wife, Theresa; and son, Daniel.

Funeral services were held Monday from the Recupero Funeral Home, Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, with Mass at Holy Rosary Church.

Interment was in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.

MICHAEL GILL

Michael J. Gill, 85, of Oakwood Park in Laflin died Friday at the Wingate at Ulster Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center, Highland, N.Y., where he was a patient for the past two months.

Born in Bayonne, N.J., he was the son of the late Nicholas and Catherine Liabek Gill.

He attended the Bayonne area schools and was a graduate of Bayonne High School. He attended Columbia University, New York City.

He and his wife, the former Hedwig Niemiec, resided in Berkeley Heights, N.J. He was employed at the Singer Corporation, Elizabeth, N.J., where he served as director of safety and security until his retirement in 1968.

After retiring he moved to Laflin in 1980, where he was a member of St. Maria Goretti Church.

He and his wife celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on June 26, 1998.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughters , Catherine Neville, Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; Paula Gill-Schiavi, Manhattan, N.Y.; sisters , Mary Pannone, Palisades Park, N.J.; Ann and Stephanie Boyko, both of Cranbury, N.J.; two grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday from the Michael J. Mikelski Funeral Home, 293 S. River St., Plains Township, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Maria Goretti Church in Laflin.

Entombment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton, Kingston Township.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.

Joseph Gillis

May 15, 1998

Joseph M. Gillis, 62, died Friday in Valley Crest Nursing Home, Plains Township, following a lengthy illness.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was son of Vera Rucofski Gillis of Wilkes-Barre and the late William Gillis.

He attended St. Clair School, Miners Mills section of Wilkes-Barre, and graduated from Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre. He also attended Wilkes-Barre Business College.

He was employed by the former Hotel Redington, Wilkes-Barre, and by the Luzerne County Assessor's Office, Wilkes-Barre. Before his retirement in 1976 due to disability, he was a clerk with the U.S. Post Office, Wilkes-Barre, for 13 years.

He was a member of St. Francis Church, Miners Mills section of Wilkes-Barre, and its Holy Name Society.

Surviving, in addition to his mother , are several cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday from the H. Merritt Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 451 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, with a funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. in St. Francis Church, Wilkes-Barre.

Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Plains Township.

Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. to the time of the funeral on Monday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Francis Church, c/o Central Administrative Office, 214 E. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, 18705.

Gillis, Joseph

February 1, 2000

Joseph F. Gillis, 94, of Wilkes-Barre, died Tuesday at Mercy Special Care Hospital, Nanticoke.

Born Nov. 2, 1905, in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Anthony and Mary (Rustaitis) Gillis. Before retiring, he was a mechanic at B.F. Goodrich Co., Wilkes-Barre. He was a member of Holy Trinity Church, Wilkes-Barre, and a member of the parish senior and junior Holy Name Societies; the Lithuanian Social Club, Wilkes-Barre Township; and the International Brotherhood of Magicians.

He was preceded in death by his brothers , Anthony and Peter.

Surviving are his sons , Leo, Hanover Township; Joseph, Shavertown; and John, Atlanta; daughters , Mary Gillis, Shavertown; and Dorothy Corcoran, Wilkes-Barre; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nephews.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Holy Trinity Church. The Rev. Theodore L. Obaza will officiate. Private interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Bear Creek. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Holy Trinity Church. Funeral Arrangements are by the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, Wilkes-Barre.
