MARTHA ELEY

June 28, 1999

Martha E. (Michael) Eley, formerly of Plymouth died Monday at Fernwood Manor on Main Road in Sweet Valley.

Born Jan. 14, 1907, in Plymouth, she was a daughter of the late John and Myrtle (Booth) Michael.

She was a member of the Pilgrim Congregational Church of Plymouth.

She was formerly employed in the housekeeping department at King's College in Wilkes-Barre.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur; brothers , Thomas, Clarence and John; and sisters , Myrtle Zimmerman and Mildred O'Boyle.

Surviving are her daughter, Penny Nareski, Plymouth; one granddaughter; two great-grandsons; sisters , Margaret Evans, Arizona; and Daisy Young, Plymouth; nieces and nephews.

Private services were at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to the Choir or the Board of Deacons of the Pilgrim Congregational Church Choir on Center Avenue in Plymouth.

ELKO, FRANK

October 1, 1999

Frank D. Elko, of South Welles Street in Kingston, died Friday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born March 22, 1937, in Nanticoke, he was the son of the late Frank and Nellie Borkowski Elko.

He was a graduate of Kingston High School, class of 1955.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

He was a Pennsylvania state trooper for 22 years, retiring in 1981.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police in Hanover Township, St. Conrad's Young Men's Society in Wilkes-Barre and American Legion Post 395 in Kingston.

Surviving are his sisters , Paulina Bilansky, North Collins, N.Y.; Ruth Taylor, Wilkes-Barre; Bunny Finnegan, Kingston; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday from the Mamary-Durkin Funeral Home, Inc., 59 Parrish St., Wilkes-Barre.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday.

Memorial donations may be made to the SPCA.

JAMES ELLMAN

April 27, 1999

James J. Ellman, 71, of New Grant Street in the East End section of Wilkes-Barre died Tuesday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born July 30, 1927, in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Charles and Helen Cooney Ellman. He was a 1945 graduate of Coughlin High School.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was part-owner, secretary and treasurer of Power Engineering Corp. in Wilkes-Barre.

He was a member of Holy Saviour Church in Wilkes-Barre and the parish choir. He also belonged to Knights of Columbus Council 302, Bishop William J. Hafey Assembly; and American Legion Post 132 in Wilkes-Barre.

He was preceded in death by his brothers , Charles and Edward. Surviving are his wife, the former Evelyn Caffrey, to whom he was married 53 years; daughters , Jane Orbon, Wilkes-Barre; Mary Ross, Wilkes-Barre; and Kathleen Doughtery, Kingston; five grandchildren; and sister, Helen Klutchko, Wilkes-Barre.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at Holy Saviour Church on Hillard Street in Wilkes-Barre. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Mausoleum in Hanover Township. There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Holy Saviour Memorial Fund, 54 Hillard Street, Wilkes-Barre, 18702.

Arrangements are by E. Blake Collins Funeral Home, 159 George Ave., Wilkes-Barre.

ELSTON, GOMER

November 7, 1999

Gomer I. "Ike" Elston, 80, of Kunkle, Dallas Township, died Sunday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

A life resident of Kunkle, he was the son of the late Ralph M. and Agnes (Isaacs) Elston.

He was a graduate of Dallas Township High School.

Before retiring he was self-employed as a carpenter.

He was a member of Kunkle United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Kunkle Fire Co.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Dodson.

Surviving are his wife, the former Elva Knecht; sons , Ralph J., Newport News, Va.; Dale, Kunkle; daughter, Sally Schrope, Jersey Shore; brothers , Marvin "Jigs," Wayne "Baldy," Gene, and sister, Lana Birnstock, all of Dallas; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday from the Richard H. Disque Funeral Home, 672 Memorial Highway, Dallas, with the Rev. Keith F. Benjamin, of the Kunkle United Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment will be in Chapel Lawn Memorial Park, Dallas.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorial donations may be made to the Kunkle United Methodist Church, RR 1, Box 196A, Noxen, 18636.

MARY EMS

M ary Ann (Yanchausky) Ems, 62, of Levittown and formerly of Exeter died Tuesday at the Delaware Valley Medical Center.

Born in Exeter, she was a 1954 graduate of Exeter High School.

She was employed as a telephone operator by Bell Telephone Co. in Philadelphia until her marriage in 1957.

She was preceded in death by her Father , Martin Yanchausky, and stepfather, Martin Wanielista preceded her in death.

Surviving are her husband of 41 years, William J. Ems Jr.; children, William Ems III, Morrisville; Donna Gentieu, Levittown; David Ems, Coaldale; Dianne Hewchuk, Palm Coast, Fla.; and Denise Gottshalk, Levittown; and 13 grandchildren.

Also surviving are her mother , Julia (Kolesar) Yanchausky Wanielista; sisters , Rose Marie Kasper, Edwardsville; Dolores Yanchausky, Exeter; and Andrea Yanchausky, Exeter; and two nephews.

A memorial service was conducted in St. Michael the Archangel Church in Levittown and a private memorial service was also conducted at home.

Engler, Zachary

March 8, 2000

Zachary Engler, infant son of Jeffrey and Mae Vandermark Engler, of Blytheburn Road, Dorrance Township, died at birth Wednesday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his brothers , Jeffrey David and Shawn Michael Engler, both at home; and his paternal grandmother, Dorothy Stewart Engler Banashefski, of Slocum.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Albert Cemetery, Wright Township. The Rev. Dianne Deming will officiate. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are by the McCune Funeral Home, Mountaintop.

ERDLEN, JOHN

November 13, 1999

John D. "Jack" Erdlen, 65, of Wellesley and West Harwich, Mass., died Friday at his home, following a battle with cancer.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of Mary (McCarrick) Erdlen, of Framingham, Mass., and the late Harry J. Erdlen.

He was raised in Ashley and graduated from Villanova University in 1957.

He resided in Medfield, Mass., for 20 years before moving to Wellesley, where he resided for 15 years.

He was a pioneer in the field of outplacement and career planning. A life entrepreneur, he developed a consulting business, which later merged with Romac International. He was vice president of the human resources division and was responsible for public relations and human resources contract services. He was the former executive director and founder of the Northeast Human Resources Association (NEHRA) and the Employment Management Association (EMA).

His articles about employment and outplacement were published in numerous publications, and he was the co-author of an award-winning book. He received the NEHRA "Five Star Award" for his contributions in the field of human resources and the EMA "Employment Person of the Year" award.

Surviving, in addition to his mother , are his wife of 35 years, Margaret (Costello); children, J. Richard "Rick," Methuen, Mass.; Kristen E., New York City; Karen Grip, New Canaan, Conn.; Brian M., Dorchester, Mass.; brother, the Rev. Harry J., O.S.A., St. Augustine Parish, Andover, Mass.; and six grandchildren.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in St. John the Evangelist Church, Route 16, Wellesley.

Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Wellesley.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. today at the George F. Doherty & sons Funeral Home, 477 Washington St., Wellesley.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Good Samaritan Hospice, 310 Allston St., Brighton, Mass., 02146.

Theresa Evan

May 16, 1998

Theresa Ann Evan, 54, of Two Inlets, Minn., died Saturday as a result of a car accident north of Park Rapids, Minn.

Born in Dallas, April 4, 1944, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Kozick.

She was raised and educated in Pennsylvania .

She worked for the RDO processing plant for more than 16 years.

She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Two Inlets, Minn., for more than 25 years.

She was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters .

She is survived by her husband, Keith Evan, Park Rapids, Minn.: children Stephanie Wegner, Hill Top, Minn.; Denise Evan, North Carolina; Keith (Patti) Evan, Fargo, N.D.; sisters Leona MacFarland, Apache Junction, Ariz.; Barbara Mears, Dallas; brothers Leonard "Pooch" Kozick, Dallas; David Kozick, Dallas; three grandsons.

Funeral services will be 6 p.m. today at the Cease Family Funeral Home, Park Rapids, Minn., with the Rev. Rick Boyd officiating.

Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Cease Family Funeral Home.

EVANS, JAMES

October 7, 1999

James "Bougie" Evans, of East Northampton Street in Wilkes-Barre Township died Thursday in the Hospice Community Care Inpatient Unit at Mercy Hospital in Wilkes-Barre.

Born Nov. 30, 1941, in Wilkes-Barre Township, he was a son of Helen Quinn Evans, of Wilkes-Barre Township, and the late Harry Evans.

A lifelong Wilkes-Barre Township resident, he attended St. Joseph's Friary School in Wilkes-Barre Township.

He was self-employed as a truck driver. He also leased his equipment to Abe M. Solomon, of Wilkes-Barre, and K.J. Transportation, of Farmington, N.Y., for many years.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Friary in Wilkes-Barre Township.

In addition to his Father , he was preceded in death by his brother, John.

Surviving, in addition to his mother , are his wife, the former Ellen Woytas; sons , Joseph and James, both of Wilkes-Barre Township; daughters , Ellen Sulitka, Wilkes-Barre Township; and Ashley Evans, at home; seven grandchildren; brothers , Harry, Wilkes-Barre; Edward, Hanover Township; and Billy, Buck Township; sisters , Margaret Jones, Wilkes-Barre; and Jeanette Wydo, Hanover Township; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Monday from the Jendrzejewski Funeral Home, 21 N. Meade St., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Joseph's Friary in Wilkes-Barre Township. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Hanover Township.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. There will be a wake service at 8 p.m. Sunday evening.
