BARRAN, ANNE

October 31, 1999

Anne D. Barran, 78, of Luzerne Towers on Bennett Street in Luzerne, died Sunday at her home.

Born Feb. 6, 1921, in Nanticoke, she was a daughter of the late Boleslaus and Anna (Wasielewski) Borkowski.

She was a graduate of Nanticoke High School and was a resident of Luzerne for the past 12 years.

Before her retirement, she was employed in the local garment industry.

She was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Women's Army Corps.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Maple Hill Cemetery in Hanover Township. Interment will follow in the cemetery.

Arrangements are by the Karl E. Blight Funeral Home of Kingston.

Leo Barrett

April 17, 1998

Leo C. Barrett of Madison Street, Wilkes-Barre, died Friday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in Towanda, he was son of the late Charles and Ella Benjamin Lamb Barrett.

He was a graduate of Forty Fort High School and attended Wilkes College.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the 489th Ordinance Evacuation Company.

A resident of Wilkes-Barre for more than 50 years, he was employed by Interstate Dress Carriers, Plains Township.

He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, Wilkes-Barre. He also belonged to American Legion Post 558, Plains Township.

He and his wife, the former Edna Campbell, would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 28.

He was preceded in death by his son, Ricky Barrett, in 1970.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons , William C. Barrett, chief of the Wilkes-Barre Police Department; Patrick J. Barrett, Wilkes-Barre; a daughter, Kathy Rubino, Pittston; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday from the E. Blake Collins Funeral Home, 159 George Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church.

Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Rose Barry

April 21, 1998

Rose A. Barry, formerly of Sly Street, Luzerne, died Tuesday at Meadows Nursing Center, Dallas.

Born in Luzerne, she was daughter of the late Dennis P. and Mary Connon Barry.

She was a graduate of Luzerne High School.

She resided in Virginia and worked as a supply specialist for the U.S. Office of the Surgeon General in Washington , D.C., until her retirement in 1972, when she moved back to Luzerne.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Luzerne.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Dennis Barry, and a sister, Hannah Barry.

Surviving are cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday from the Betz-Jastremski Funeral Home Inc., 568 Bennett St., Luzerne, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Luzerne. The Rev. Robert Arnold will officiate.

Interment will be in St. Ignatius Cemetery, Pringle.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today.

BARTLEY, BENJAMIN

October 29, 1999

Benjamin Jack Bartley, infant son of Gregory and Rebecca Griffis, of Mountaintop, died Friday at birth at Penn State Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are maternal grandparents, Thomas and Betty Griffis, of Warrior Run; paternal grandparents, Joseph and Jean Bartley; great-grandparents, Jean Gregory, Wilkes-Barre; Jack Lennon, Kingston; brothers , Joshua Mowry and Luke Bartley; aunts, uncles and cousins.

A committal service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Mary's Cemetery Chapel, Hanover Township, with the Rev. Peter O'Rourke, assistant pastor of St. Nicholas Church, Wilkes-Barre, officiating.

Arrangements are by Walter W. Lisman and Son Funeral Home, Wilkes-Barre.

Bates, Bruce

March 5, 2000

Bruce Robert Bates, 74, of Regent Street, Wilkes-Barre, died Sunday at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre.

Born Sept. 12, 1925, in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Bruce Raymond and Kathleen (Connor) Bates.

He attended Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Before his retirement, he worked as a warehouse manager for the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre, and later in the warehouse of PNC Bank, Wilkes-Barre.

He was a member of St. Aloysius Church, Wilkes-Barre, and its Holy Name Society, the Republic Club, Wilkes-Barre, and the Lake Carey Firefighters.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Gerald; and sister, Kathleen Collett.

Surviving are his wife, the former Edith Lewis; son, Bruce E., Wilkes-Barre; sister, Marie McCarthy, Wilkes-Barre; brother, Raymond, Madison, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday from the McLaughlin Funeral Service, 142 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre, with a funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Aloysius Church, 142 W. Division St., Wilkes-Barre.

Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today.

Baum, Alice

February 15, 2000

Alice H. Baum, of East Juniper Street, Hazleton, died Tuesday at her home.

Born in Hazleton, she was a daughter of the late George and Ida (Rice) Melk. She was a member of St. John's Primitive Methodist Church, Hazleton.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles.

Surviving are her son, Charles, Hazleton; one granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today from the Beltz-Petrilli Funeral Home, Hazleton. The Rev. Neal Smith will officiate. Interment will be in Sky View Memorial Park, Hometown. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. today.

Elizabeth Baut

April 19, 1998

Elizabeth K. Baut, of Lincoln Avenue, West Wyoming, died Sunday at the Mercy Special Care Hospital, Nanticoke.

Born in Nanticoke, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Alice Naughton Kettrick.

She resided in West Wyoming for the past 40 years.

She graduated from Kingston High School and Wyoming Seminary Business School.

She was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows, West Wyoming, and past president of the Christian Mothers Altar Rosary Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry S.; brothers Dr. James Kettrick, Gerald Kettrick; sisters , Mary McDermott and Alice Kettle.

Surviving are daughters Patricia Haughney and Mrs. Edward (Mary) Sklaney, both of Nanticoke; Barbara Baut, at home; son, Harry, Las Vegas; three grandchildren; brother, Francis Kettrick, Levittown.

Private funeral services will be held Wednesday from the Metcalfe & Shaver Funeral Home, Inc., 504 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30a.m. in Our Lady of Sorrows Church, West Wyoming.

Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton, Kingston Township.

There will be no calling hours.

Beffer, Leocadia

March 10, 2000

Leocadia J. Beffer, 80, of Plains Township, died Friday at her home.

Born in Plains Township, she was a daughter of the late Michael and Josephine (Ruskowski) Skesavage. She was a machine operator for Plains Blouse. She was a member of International Ladies Garment Workers Union, The Plains Senior Citizens and Sacred Heart Church and its Altar and Rosary Society, Plains Township.

She was preceded in death by her son, Joseph, San Antonio, Texas ; daughters , Dorothy Crosby, Binghamton, N.Y.; Patricia Allen, San Francisco; and Margaret Tremblay, at home; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Monday from the Corcoran Funeral Home, 20 S. Main St., Plains Township, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart, Plains Township. Interment will be in Lithuanian Cemetery, West Wyoming. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Beky, Daniel

March 8, 2000

Daniel Beky Jr., of Dana Street, Swoyersville, died Wednesday in Riverstreet Manor, Wilkes-Barre.

He was the son of the late Daniel and Mary (Billy) Beky. He was a laborer in various coal mining companies in Wyoming Valley. He was a member of Holy Name St. Mary's Church, Swoyersville.

He was preceded in death by his brothers , Andrew, Michael, and George Beky; John, Michael and Joseph Beny; sisters , Mary Wooditch; Anna Kovatch; and Helen Busha.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Victoria (Gongleski) Reky; son, Daniel, Exeter; daughter, Elaine Beky, Wyoming; brother, Thomas, Swoyersville; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday from Joseph L. Wroblewski Funeral Home, 1442 Wyoming Ave. Forty Fort, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Holy Name St. Mary's Church Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton. Friends way call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday.
