GLADYS SHANK BAER
Gladys Shank Baer, 87, of Elizabethtown, passed away on February 21, 2007 at Masonic Village. Born in Harrisonburg, VA, July 1, 1919, she was the daughter of the late John M. and Mary Miller Shank. Gladys was the wife of the late Mennonite Bishop Russell J. Baer who died in 1999. They were married 53 years. Gladys graduated from Eastern Mennonite College with a bachelor of Theology degree in 1945. She assisted her husband in pastorates in Knoxville, TN, Steelton, PA and Goods Mennonite Church, Elizabethtown, where she held her church membership. In addition to being a homemaker, Gladys started a home economics program in 1968 at Kraybill Mennonite School where her husband served as administrator. In recent years she was a volunteer at the International Gift and Thrift Shop in Mount Joy. Surviving are two daughters ; Shirley, wife of Paul N. Kurtz of Keyser, WV; Patricia Stoltzfus of Morgantown, WV; and four sons ; Conrad of Spokane, WA; Ronald, husband of Deborah Hasdorf of Cheyney, WA; Gerald, husband of Rose Landis Baer of Elizabethtown; and James, husband of Valerie Miller Baer of Bainbridge. Gladys had 18 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Walter Shank of Hanover. She was preceded in death by brothers , Paul, Mark, Ralph, Aaron, and sisters Naomi and Mary Louise. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2007 at Goods Mennonite Church, 4374 Bossler Road, Elizabethtown at 3:00 PM, with Pastor Nelson Bechtold officiating. Viewing and visitation with the family will begin at 1:00 at the church on Saturday. Interment will take place at Goods Mennonite Cemetery.
J. STANLEY KAYLOR
J. Stanley Kaylor, 94 of Masonic Village, Elizabethtown, formerly of W. Hummelstown Street, Elizabethtown, died on Saturday, February 24, 2007 at Lancaster General Hospital. Born in Elizabethtown, PA, he was the son of the late Jacob C. and Elizabeth Haverstick Kaylor. He was the husband of Evelyn Chard Kaylor who died in 2001. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Alberta Garman Kaylor, in 1985. Mr. Kaylor was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Elizabethtown for more than 50 years. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy. Prior to retiring in 1982, he was the owner/operator of Kaylor & Garman Plumbing and Heating in Elizabethtown. A Mason, he was a member of Abraham C. Treichler Lodge No. 682 in Elizabethtown, Lancaster Lodge of Perfection, and Harrisburg Consistory. He was also a past president and member of the Kiwanis Club of Elizabethtown and was a former scout master for the Boy Scouts of America in Elizabethtown. He also enjoyed wood working. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Helen Brubaker. Mr. Kaylor is survived by a son, Dennis J., married to Melissa Kaylor, Lancaster; a daughter, Sandra L., married to Jay Bradley, Elizabethtown, three grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a brother, Clarence, married to Arlene Kaylor, Richmond, VA A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2007 at John S. Sell Memorial Chapel, Masonic Village, Elizabethtown at 3:00 PM. There will be no viewing. The family will receive friends at the chapel from 2:00 until the time of service. John E. Oberholtzer, 88, of Elizabethtown, died Sunday, February 25, 2007 at ManorCare Health Services, Elizabethtown. Born in East Donegal Twp., he was the son of the late John D. and Anna Shelley Oberholtzer. He was married to M. Joyce Sweigart Oberholtzer. They were married for 63 years on August 22, 2006. Mr. Oberholtzer was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Elizabethtown. He was also a member of the American Legion, Conewago Post #329, and the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #596, both of Elizabethtown. Mr. Oberholtzer was a US Army veteran of WWII. He enjoyed hunting and watching sports on tv. He was preceded in death by three brothers , Harry, Ralph, and Kermit Oberholtzer, and two sisters , Ruth Elizabeth Oberholtzer, and Mary Hammond. In addition to his wife, Mr. Oberholtzer is survived by a son, Paul, husband of Shirlene Oberholtzer, Elizabethtown, a granddaughter, Cynthia Anderson Gumbert, wife of David, Marietta, a grandson, Michael, husband of Wendy Oberholtzer, Marietta, ten great grandchildren, Matthew, Hunter, Blake, Dakota, Tanner, Peyton, Cooper, Terrianna, Dylan, Tyler, a brother, Wilmer Oberholtzer, East Lampeter, and a sister, Naomi Rhodes, Mountville. GRACE B. PAINTER
Grace B. Painter, of Lancaster, formerly of Elizabethtown, died on Monday, February 26, 2007 at Brethren Village. Born in Elizabethtown, she was the daughter of the late Elmer M. and Lavina Lehman Bernhard. She was married to Donald R. Painter who died July 22, 2002. They were married for over 60 years. Mrs. Painter was a member of the Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren. She enjoyed spending time with her family. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters . Mrs. Painter is survived by two sons , Douglas L., husband of the late Toshi Y. Painter, York, Bernard K., husband of Mary Painter, Phoenix, AZ, a daughter, Donna R., wife of Ross Dunham, Houston, TX, seven grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2007 at the chapel at Brethren Village, 3001 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, PA 17606, at 10:00 AM. NORMAN B. RUTT
Norman B. Rutt, 79 of Elizabethtown, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, February 26, 2007 of natural causes. Born in West Donegal Twp., he was the son of the late Norman L. and Mary Franck Brubaker Rutt. He was the husband of Anna H. Miller Rutt. They celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on February 5th. As a member of Word of Life Chapel, Bainbridge, since it's beginning in 1950, Mr. Rutt helped in the building of the church and served in many capacities. He loved music and enjoyed serving as song leader for many years. Mr. Rutt was a dairy farmer for over 43 years. After retiring, he still continued helping his son on the farm. He helped another son with constructing his machine shop and also used his construction experience participating in several short-term missions. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. Mr. Rutt was preceded in death by two great grandchildren and three brothers , Harold, Frank, and Leroy. In addition to his wife, he is survived by six children. J. Leon, married to Myra Rutt, Elizabethtown; June L., married to Duane Hertzler, Loysville; Karen M., married to Tony Mast, Parkesburg; Joanne L., married to Jerry Hess, Mount Joy; Jere L., married to Beth Rutt, Elizabethtown; David A., married to Kristine Rutt, Tyrone, GA; 19 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, siblings, Edwin, married to Ruth Rutt, Lancaster; Arlene Esbenshade, Lititz; Martha, married to Henry Garber, Lancaster; Esther Rutt, Manheim; and Miriam, married to Elvin Hess, Manheim. DALE EUGENE HYNICKER
Dale Eugene Hynicker, 55 of Elizabethtown, died on Monday, February 26, 2007 at his home. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of Jacob O. and Lauretta Wittel Hynicker of Elizabethtown. He was the husband of Jean Smilski Hynicker. They were married on March 5, 1977. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Elizabethtown. Mr. Hynicker was a 1969 graduate of Elizabethtown Area High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Engineering from Penn State University in 1981. From 1977-82, he was employed as an inspector with Huth Engineers, Lancaster and from 1982-2007 he was superintendent of construction with Marks Contracting, Ltd. in Lebanon. Mr. Hynicker was a member of the Central Pennsylvania Porsche Club and enjoyed hunting, skiing, traveling, Porsche automobiles, and movies. He was also an avid Penn State Football fan and was a Civil War enthusiast. He was preceded in death by a brother Frank C. Hynicker. In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by a daughter, Michelle Rae, at home and a sister Lynn Young of Richmond, VA. BETTY JANE CLARE
Betty Jane Clare, 81, formerly of Towanda, PA and McAllen, TX, died Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at the Masonic Village, Elizabethtown. Born in Allentown, she was the daughter of the late Clarence E. and Annie DeLong German. She was married to L. Paul Clare for over 59 years. Betty was a registered nurse, who graduated from the Allentown Hospital School of Nursing and was a member of the Cadet Nurse Corps. For several years, after graduation from nursing school, she worked for Dr. Groner’s office in Allentown. While raising her children, she volunteered her time as a leader with the Girl Scouts, with the Pink Ladies at Towanda Memorial Hospital, for various blood banks, and was a substitute nurse in the Towanda Area School District. While in McAllen, she volunteered as a reading mentor for the school district, was actively involved with various church activities, and was a member of the women’s group of the El Wadi Grotto. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters , Barbara J., wife of Ronald O’Brien, Emmaus, Janet C., widow of Michael Brito, Kutztown, Peggy L., wife of Robert Weaver, Bowers, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, March 9, 2007 at John S. Sell Memorial Chapel, One Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown, PA at 11:30 AM. There will be no viewing. ISABELLA K. LOGAN
Isabella K. Logan, 94 of Hershey, formerly of Philadelphia, died Thursday, March 1, 2007 at the home of her daughter. Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Hugh and Margaret Rodgers Kirland. She was married to William R. Logan who died February 26, 1991. During her life she was very active in the Episcopal Church she was a Sunday school teacher, a member of the choir and had served as president of the ECW. Most recently she was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Hershey, where she continued to be an active member serving with the ECW. She retired from the A&P Food stores after 25 years as a cashier. She was an avid bowler, and bowled until she was 80. She was the last of 7 children. She is survived by a son, William G. Sr. husband of Arleen Wolf Logan, Manahawkin, NJ. a daughter Janet M. wife of James H. Landvater Sr., Hershey, Pa. five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at All Saints Episcopal Church, 310 Elm Avenue & Valley Road, Hershey, PA 17033 at 11:00 AM. Joan B. Derstine, 90 of Elizabethtown, formerly of Chalfont, PA died on Monday, March 5, 2007 at Masonic Village, Elizabethtown. Born in St. Louis, MO, she was the daughter of the late Harold G. and Edith R. Moore Blodgett. She was the wife of J. Clyde Derstine. They had been married for 63 years at the time of his death in July 1998. Mrs. Derstine was a former member of Pleasantville United Church of Christ in Chalfont and was an active volunteer in her community for many years. She and her husband enjoyed traveling and visited many countries all over the world. A caring mother and homemaker, Mrs. Derstine loved spending time with her family. She is survived by two daughters , Dr. Jill B. Derstine, Hellertown; Judy B. Derstine, wife of Trevor Hughes, Fairfax, CA; a son, John D. Derstine, a daughter in law, Judith C. Derstine, seven grandchildren, one great granddaughter, a half brother, Thomas Blodgett of Bethlehem, and her companion for the last eight years, William Young. Robert A. Miller, 66, of Elizabethtown, died Wednesday, March 7, 2007 at Hershey Medical Center. Born in Lancaster Co., he was the son the late Earl and Dorothy Albert Miller. He was married to Barbara A. Synder Miller for 48 years on September 28, 2006. Mr. Miller was employed by American Filter, Elizabethtown, as a warehouse manager. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and a member of the Palmyra Sportsman’s Club. Mr. Miller enjoyed archery, hunting, and woodworking. He enjoyed being in the outdoors. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Aaron Siodlowski, a sister, Ethel Englehart, and a brother, Earl Miller, Jr. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Angela Wujciga, Chicago, IL, a son, Eric Miller, Elizabethtown, two grandsons, Austin Siodlowski, Kyler Wujciga, and four sisters , Annie Sager, Landisville, Betty Espenshade, Elizabethtown, Virgie Dunkleberger, Elizabethtown, Corrine Dupler, Elizabethtown. WILLIAM F. STUM
William F. Stum, 74 of Elizabethtown, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 7, 2007 at Lancaster General Hospital. Born in York Springs, he was the son of the late William C. and Ruth Fanus Stum. He was the husband of Miriam F. Loewen Stum. They were married for 55 years on July 21, 2006. Mr. Stum attended Stevens Hill Community Church in Elizabethtown, PA. He retired in 1993 from AMP, Inc. where he was employed as a machinist for 26 years. He was previously employed at the former Olmsted Air Force Base in Middletown, PA. Mr. Stum served in the US Army during the
Korean War. He was a member of the Sinnemahoning Sportsmen's Association and the North American Hunting Club. Mr. Stum also enjoyed camping, hunting traveling and woodworking. He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald. Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Denise L., wife of Donald Coles, Tower City; two sons , William R., husband of Cindy Stum, Elizabethtown; Lonnie W., husband of Deborah Stum, Elizabethtown; six grandchildren, one great granddaughter, four sisters , Velma, wife of Fred Olweiler, Elizabethtown; June A. Devin Dale Hiestand, 18, of Bainbridge, went home to be with the Lord unexpectedly Wednesday, March 14, 2007 from injuries sustained in an atv accident on the family farm. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of Dale E. and Lucy J. Breneman Hiestand, Bainbridge. Devin was employed as a cook by Village Homestead Restaurant, Bainbridge. He was a senior at Lancaster Mennonite High School, Lancaster. Devin enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, and girlfriend, Allison Reed. In addition, he enjoyed hunting, golfing, and attending sporting events. Devin grew up attending Congregational Bible Church, Marietta and most recently attended LCBC. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, Devin was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Christian, Jr. and Mary Hiestand. In addition to his parents, he is survived by four sisters , Dana E. Hiestand, at home, Diane M., wife of Arlan Hollinger, Mount Joy, Gail C. Hiestand, Mechanicsburg, Kim A., wife of Ron Stark, Elizabethtown, a brother, Kris C., husband of Kelli Snader, Elizabethtown, and maternal grandparents, Albert and Mary Jane Breneman, Manheim. Charles B. "Charlie" Snyder, 68 of East Petersburg, died on Thursday, April 17, 2008 at Luther Acres in Lititz. Born in Mount Joy, he was the son of the late Elmer and Kathryn Zug Snyder. He was the husband of Joyce Frey Snyder. They were married for 43 years on April 10th. Charlie was a member of Mount Calvary Church, Elizabethtown, where he served as an usher. He was the owner/operator of Snyder's Plumbing in Elizabethtown. Prior to starting his own business, Charlie was employed by Roy Ressler & Son in Mountville for 38 years. He also served in the Army National Guard. Charlie was an avid Phillies and 76ers fan, enjoyed playing softball and loved model trains. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Christian Bernard. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; two sons , Jeffrey C. of West Chester; David P., husband of Aimee Snyder, Elizabethtown; four grandchildren, Owen, Cooper, Grady and Emmalee Snyder; two sisters , Vivian, wife of Earl Ziegler; Fanny Ruth, wife of Paul Reider and a brother, Paul Snyder. Arlie “Buzz” A. Anderson, 84, of Elizabethtown, formerly of Everett, WA and Yuma, AZ, died Saturday, April 19, 2008 at the VA Medical Center, Lebanon. Born in Hartford, WA he was the son of the late Everett Albert and Grace Ellen Melott Anderson. He was a member of Independent Baptist Church, Yuma, AZ. Mr. Anderson was a conductor for the railroad. He was preceded in death by 3 siblings. Mr. Anderson is survived by a brother, Emery Anderson, WA, and two sisters , Helen Clapp, Everett, WA, and Grace Albriktsen, formerly of Everett, WA. A Graveside Service will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, RR2, Annville, PA 17003 at 11:00 AM.
JIMMIE C. McGRADY
Jimmie Clarence McGrady, 52, of Elizabethtown, entered eternal rest Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at Hershey Medical Center. Born in Sparta, NC on November 18, 1957, he was the son of Gracie Ekin of Killeen, TX and the late Clarence McGrady. Jim served in the US Army. He loved NASCAR and country music, and carnivals and taking trips. He was an avid New England Patriots fan, but most of all he loved spending time with his family and friends. Jim is survived by his wife Susan McGrady of four years, his mother Gracie, a sister Barbara Lingenfelter of Killeen, TX and a brother Mick McGrady of San Dimas, CA; three children: Matthew and Carly of Thurmont, MD and Roger Douglas McGrady of North Carolina; two step daughters : Cristina Zimmerman of Penbrook and Melissa Gilbert of Middletown; a step son William Zimmerman, Jr. of Harrisburg; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Jimmie will be greatly missed, he was a great friend, grandfather, husband and a terrific Father . Herman R. "Ben" Turpin
Herman R. "Ben" Turpin, 89, of Elizabethtown, formerly of Newtown, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 20, 2008 at Hershey Medical Center. Born in Trenton, NJ, he was the son of the late Charles and Jeannette Richards Turpin. He was the husband of Ruth E. Hieber Turpin. They celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on June 4, 2007. Mr. Turpin retired as Chief Warrant Officer from the US Army after 22 years. He was then employed by Scrappy's Auto Service as a Parts Manager. Mr. Turpin was a member of Newtown Lodge #427 F&AM, Valley of Allentown Consistory, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Trenton Forest #4, a life member of Newtown Ambulance Squad and was an avid reader. In addition to his wife, Mr. Turpin is survived by a son, William C. Turpin, Langhorne, a daughter, Jeannette M. Turpin, McVeytown, granddaughter, Michela M., wife of Peter, Moore, Newtown, a grandson, Benjamin E., husband of Jodie Turpin, Saylorsburg, and four great grandchildren, Andrew and Valery Turpin, and Carys and Kylah Moore. Maria M. Winnerling, 81, of Hershey, died Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at Country Meadows, Hershey. Born in Regensburg, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Heinrich and Anna Rauch Moser. She was the wife of Christian C. Winnerling who died August 5, 2002. They had celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on August 16, 2001. Mrs. Winnerling was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Elizabethtown. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Christian H. Winnerling who died August 24, 1995 and several brothers and sisters . Mrs. Winnerling is survived by a son, Jeffrey T., husband of Mary Ann Cierlitsky Winnerling, Elizabethtown, two grandsons, Joshua, Millersville, Seth, Lancaster, a granddaughter, Megan, Burlington, VT, a sister, Else Schankhard, Munich, Germany, and a daughter-in-law, Victoria Winnerling. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, May 5, 2008 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 904 Mill Road, Elizabethtown, PA at 11:00 AM. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until the time of service. There will be no viewing. Interment will take place in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Lancaster. June A. Espenshade, 56, of Elizabethtown, died Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at Hospice of Lancaster County, Lancaster. Born in Oswego, NY, she was the daughter of Theresa Raymond Broadwell, Oswego, and the late Beryl Broadwell. She was the wife of Marvin H. “Butch” Espenshade. They celebrated their 9th wedding anniversary in August 2007. In addition to her Father , she was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Broadwell. She is survived by a daughter, Trina Broadwell, wife of Ronald Hillman, two sons , Clark, husband of Jesica Stacks, Edward Clark, all of Oswego, four sisters , Helen Schultzkie, Donna Motyka, both of Oswego, Gerry LaPointe of Pulaski, NY, Debbie Viavattene, Rochester, NY, three brothers , Harry Broadwell, Georgia, Beryl Broadwell, Scriba, NY, Gary Broadwell, Hannibal, NY, and several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Services will be held at a later date.
