MARY K. BECHTEL
Mary K. Bechtel, 81, 685 Ivy Drive Mount Joy, PA died Wednesday, July 2, 2003 at her residence following a brief illness. Born in Royalton, Dauphin County, PA, Mrs. Bechtel was the daughter of the late William J. and Bessie R. Lutz Moore. Her husband, Arthur R. Bechtel, died in 1995. Mrs. Bechtel was a member of Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren. She retired in 1987 from the Elizabethtown Area School District where she was a cook in the high school cafeteria for 29 years. Mrs. Bechtel was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit #329 and the Elizabethtown Senior Citizens both in Elizabethtown. In addition, she was a member of the Mount Joy Leisure Club and bowled in the Senior Citizens League at Clearview Lanes also in Mount Joy, PA. Mrs. Bechtel is survived by a daughter, Doris J., wife of Christ J. Risser, of Elizabethtown, two grandchildren, two great grandchildren, one step great grandson and a sister, Jane Gelata of Elizabethtown. She was preceded in death by three brothers . Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, July 5, 2003 at 11:00 AM at the Frank S. Miller Funeral Home, 130 North Market Street, Elizabethtown, PA. Burial will be in West Green Tree Cemetery, Elizabethtown. Friends may call at the Miller Funeral Home on Saturday morning from 10:00 until the time of the service. JOHN M. "JACK" STEELMAN
Services to be held for John M. "Jack" Steelman Age: 83 Brethren Village, Lancaster, PA, formerly of Elizabethtown. died Tuesday morning at Hospice of Lancaster County, Lancaster, PA. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the husband of the late Sara E. Heindel Steelman who died in 2002. Mr. Steelman was a member of Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy. Prior to retiring in 1984, he was employed for 23 years as a printer by Continental Press, Inc. in Elizabethtown. With his wife, he also co-owned and operated the Nutrition Center in Elizabethtown for 12 years. He was preceded in death by a son, John E., in 1990. Survivors: Brother; Elwood Steelman of Spring Run, PA, Sister; Jeanne Winerip of Levittown, PA, 2 Grandchildren, 1 Great Grandson. DAVID ALAN STEPHENSON
David Alan Stephenson, 50, 225 College Avenue, Elizabethtown, PA died Saturday at 12:00 PM while jogging on Rails to Trails in South Londonderry Twp., Lebanon County PA. He was the husband of Laurie Schantz Stephenson. Born in Harrisburg, PA, Mr. Stephenson was the son of Lillian Brame Stephenson of Hummelstown, PA and the late David A. Stephenson. He was married for 27 years in September to Laurie Schantz Stephenson. Mr. Stephenson was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Elizabethtown, PA. He graduated from John Harris High School, Harrrisburg, PA, in 1971, Elizabethtown College in 1975 and earned an MBA from the Pennsylvania State University in 1984. He was employed at Hershey Foods for 23 years serving most recently as Director of Commodity operations. He was chair of the budget committee and a member of the board of the Cocao Merchants Association and a member of the New York Board of Trade. Mr. Stephenson served as an adjunct professor and member of the Elizabethtown College International Business Executive Advisory Council. At the time of his death, Mr. Stephenson was serving his first term as a member of the Elizabethown Borough Council. Additionally he was a member of Abraham C. Treichler Lodge 682, F&AM, in Elizabethtown, PA. An avid runner, Mr. Stephenson had participated in the Steamtown Marathon in Scranton, PA. In addition to his wife and mother , he is survived by a daughter, Amanda Stephenson, Oakland, CA and a son, Daniel Stephenson at home and a sister, Barbara, wife of George Pikari of Kingwood, Texas . Thomas R. Ackerman, 69, of Elizabethtown, died Thursday, January 11, 2007 at ManorCare Health Services, Elizabethtown. Born in Harrisburg, he was the son of the late Tracey and Martha Leibhart Ackerman. He was married to C. Jane Hopkins Ackerman for 21 years. A member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Elizabethtown, he was a US Army veteran. Mr. Ackerman enjoyed his vegetable garden. He was preceded in death by a brother, George Ackerman. In addition to his wife, Mr. Ackerman is survived by a brother, Tracey Robert Ackerman, AZ. Services are private at the convenience of the family. LESTER S. MILLER
Lester S. Miller, 96 of Lancaster, formerly of Rheems, died on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 at the Mennonite Home. Born in Mount Joy Twp., he was the son of the late Samuel R. and Elsie Young Miller. He was the husband of Helen Shelly Miller who died in September 1998. Retiring after 46 years, Mr. Miller was employed as a mill superintendent by Wenger Feed Mill in Rheems. A member of West Green Tree Church of the Brethren since 1938, he was a former Sunday school teacher and previously served on the church board. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Miller was preceded in death by a sister, Kathryn L. Miller and a brother, C. Roy Miller. He is survived by a son, Gerald L., married to Marilyn Miller, Middletown. HOWARD S. KOPP
Howard S. Kopp, 84, of Elizabethtown, died Friday, January 12, 2007 at Lancaster Regional Medical Center, Lancaster. Born in Rapho Township, he was the son of the late Jacob K. and Mabel Shenk Kopp. His first wife, Mary K. Dehmey Kopp died November 5, 1994. He is married to Mary Jane Kready Kopp, Lancaster. A member of Chiques Church of the Brethren, he served on various committees and boards including the finance board. He was also a member of the Good Shepherd Sunday school class. A self-employed dairy farmer, Mr. Kopp was a member of the PA Farm Bureau, Holstein Association of PA, PA Young Farmers, and the National Holstein Association. Mr. Kopp is survived by three sons , Jay H., husband of Ann Kopp, Middletown, Galen R., husband of Lilli Ann Kopp, Mount Joy, Ronald E., husband of Connie Kopp, Middletown, several grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and a brother, Harvey S. Russel E. Martin, 76, of Mount Joy, formerly of Elizabethtown, died on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 at Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim. Born in Elizabethtown, he was the son of the late Russel A. and Anna M. Aungst Martin. He was married to Louise F. Fullerton Martin for over 57 years. A deacon and elder of Bainbridge Church of God, Bainbridge, he was very active in the church. Mr. Martin owned and operated Martin's Electrical Service in Elizabethtown. He was a member of the Healthy Heart of Lancaster YMCA, the Amateur Ham Radio Operators Club for 50 years with the call letters of W3MFW, and a member of the Elizabethtown Historical Society, Elizabethtown. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He liked antique cars. Mr. Martin was preceded in death by a brother, James Martin. In addition to his wife, he is survived by, a son, Jeffrey L. Martin, husband of Nancy Hawman, Seattle WA, a daughter, Wendy L., wife of Allen S. Brandt, Elizabethtown, a grandson, Shawn Martin, three granddaughters, Karly Wander, Lindsey Givens, Addison Brandt, two great grandchildren, a sister, Mary Mishler, and a brother, Richard Martin. HARRIET I. ALLISON
Harriet I. Allison, 86, of Hershey, formerly of Elizabethtown, died Thursday, January 11, 2007 at Country Meadows, Hershey. Born in Baltimore, MD, she was the daughter of the late Curtis Cavel and Nanniem Erbe Beetham born on January 20, 1920. Mrs. Allison graduated from Eastern High School in 1937 and then graduated from Towson State Teacher College in 1940. She taught in Baltimore schools until 1943, when the Curtis Beetham family moved to Chambersburg. Mrs. Allison taught in the nearby Scotland School for Veteran's Children in Scotland, PA until 1952. She then wed Malcolm E. Allison on June 15, 1952 and they moved to Elizabethtown. Harriet went to Elizabethtown College and graduated summa cum laude in 1953. She then taught in Elizabethtown schools for almost 15 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm, who died on March 26, 2006 and a sister, Phyllis Guise. Mrs. Allison is survived by a daughter, Beth Ann Allison, Lancaster, a son, Donald E., husband of Pamela Allison, Richmond, VA, two grandsons, Kenneth and Michael, and two step granddaughters, April and Lauren. Hazel M. Rapp, 93, of Mount Joy, died on Thursday, January 11, 2007 at Lancaster General Hospital, Lancaster. Born in Marietta, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd and Mary Shank Rapp. She was married & divorced to Charles Reisinger who passed away in the late 1970's. She retired after 10 years at Copes Corn as a factory worker in 1993. Prior to that she worked in a shoe factory in Mount Joy. She was very artistic and enjoyed ceramics, painting, and knitting. She was preceded in death in 1986 by daughter, Genevieve Newcomer and in 2002 by great grandson, Darren Horton. She is survived by a grandson, Joseph Newcomer, Leesburg, VA, three granddaughters, Susan Horton, Lexington, SC, Brenda Dailey, Winchester, VA, Tracey Shepherd, Strasburg, VA, and 7 great grandchildren, Joshua, Genevieve, Laura, Matthew, Audra, William, and Dylan. ALBERT J. McDEVITT
Albert J. McDevitt, 82, of Elizabethtown, formerly of Philadelphia, died on Friday, January 12, 2007 at Hospice of Lancaster County, Lancaster. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late William and Gladys Sleep McDevitt. He married Lois V. Spaeth McDevitt on June 1, 1957. A member of John S. Sell Chapel, Elizabethtown, he served on the church bell choir. He was also a member of the Gentle-Men and was a former member of the men's chorus. Mr. McDevitt was a 50-year member of the Richmond Lodge #230 F&AM, Philadelphia, the Scottish Rite, and the Order of the Amaranth. In addition, he was a member of the High Twelve where he served as president for part of 2005. A US Navy veteran, he served on the USS Yorktown during WWII. He was preceded in death by a son, David Stanley McDevitt who died in 1982. In addition to his wife, Mr. McDevitt is survived by two sons , Albert J., husband of Jeanne McDevitt, Doylestown, PA; James E., husband of Robin Dillon, Bethlehem, PA; a daughter, Elizabeth A., wife of David Rosander, Bradenton, FL, 8 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 4 brothers , and 3 sisters . A Masonic Service will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2007 at the John S. Sell Memorial Chapel, Masonic Village, Elizabethtown at 11:15 AM. Robert E. Hummel, Sr., 52 of Elizabethtown, died on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at Hershey Medical Center. Born in Sunbury, he was the son of Mollie I. Spigelmeyer Martin of Elizabethtown and the late George Hummel. A well driller, Mr. Hummel was employed by Myers Bros. Drilling Contractors, Inc. in Salunga, until August of 2005. He was a member of sons of American Legion, Loyal Order of Moose #596, both in Elizabethtown, the Elston, Dela-Ches and Milton Grove Sportsman Clubs, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and riding his motorcycle. Mr. Hummel was also a lung transplant recipient in April of 2006. In addition to his mother , he is survived by two sons , Robert E., Jr., married to Amanda Hummel; and Cory Hummel; a granddaughter Brooke Hummel; three sisters , Linda Shank, Gloria, married to Charles Laubach; Brenda, married to Robert Hollinger; three brothers , George Hummel, William Hummel and Rick, married to Pam Hummel, all of Elizabethtown. Lester N. Borrell, 65 of Elizabethtown died on Thursday, February 1, 2007 at his home. Born in Middletown, he was the son of the late John and Ella Laughman Borrell. Now retired, Mr. Borrell was employed by PennDOT as a maintenance worker and was a member of Teamsters Locall #77. He is survived by a son, Nickolas S., married to Caryn Borrell, Elizabethtown, a granddaughter, Caitlyn, two sisters and a brother. Edith P. Waltz, 82, of Elizabethtown, died on Monday, February 5, 2007 at ManorCare Health Services, Elizabethtown. Born in Bainbridge, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Mary Steffy Lighty. She was married to Raymond N. Waltz for over 58 years. Mrs. Waltz was a member of Harvest Community Church, Mount Joy. A nurse's aide, she was employed by the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown for over 20 years. Mrs. Waltz enjoyed gardening, cooking, and baking. In addition, she loved to spend time with her grandchildren. She was a very jolly person. She was preceded in death by two brothers , John F. and Irvin W. Lighty, four sisters , Blanche Lighty, Irene Lighty, Anne Greenly, and Ethel Weirch. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Waltz is survived by two daughters , Barbara Whitsel, Wrightsville, Susan, wife of John Hanlon, Mohnton, five grandchildren, Carla, Cheryl, Tammy, Chad, Eric, six great grandchildren, and one great-great grandson. Ralph H. Seiders, 69, of Elizabethtown, died Tuesday, January 30, 2007 at home. Born in Londonderry Twp., he was the son of the late John H. and Sadie Mae King Seiders. He was the husband of the late Doris J. Kuhn Seiders who died July 18, 2004. He was a member of Elizabethtown Mennonite Church. Mr. Seiders attended Black Oak School and Hershey High School. A supervisor, he was employed by Longenecker's Hatchery, Elizabethtown from 1966 until 2005. Prior to that he had been a farmer until 1970. Mr. Seiders is survived by two daughters , Joyce M. Broadwater, Elizabethtown, Joanne R., wife of Ken Riggleman, Indianapolis, IN, four grandsons, John Whittemore, David Whittemore, David Riggleman, Samuel Riggleman, a brother, Harold Seiders, five sisters , Anna Gall, Ruth Espenshade, Orpha Zeager, Naomi Hoffer, and Rachel Zeager. Paul E. Meisenberger, Jr., 85, of Elizabethtown, formerly of Willow Street, PA died on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 at the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Paul E., Sr. and Helen Hawkins Meisenberger. He was married to Gladys B. Gast Meisenberger for over 60 years. Mr. Meisenberger was a graduate of F&M College and was a Mason. He served as a bombardier in the US Army Air Corp during WWII. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Karen L., wife of Gary Fleckenstein, Elizabethtown, a grandson, Andrew Fleckenstein, Elizabethtown, and a sister, Dorothy Cooper, Lancaster. Alta V. Arnold, 84 of Rheems, formerly of Bainbridge, died on Wednesday, February 14, 2007 at Rheems Nursing Center. Born in Paradise, she was the daughter of the late George E. and Annie E. Aulthouse Gaul. She was the wife of Ralph Arnold who died in 1968. Mrs. Arnold was a member of the First Church of God, Elizabethtown. A homemaker, she also worked part-time for her husband at the former Arnold's Welding Shop in Bainbridge and enjoyed gardening and crocheting. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter Yvonne I. "Vonnie" Kaylor and 13 brothers and sisters . She was the last of her immediate family. Surviving is a son-in-law, Fred R., husband of Brenda Kaylor, Elizabethtown, two grandsons, a great granddaughter and a great grandson. Catharine A. "K" Coombs, 80, of Elizabethtown went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 13, 2007. Born in Hightstown, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Phares H. and Erel Catharine Grabill Hertzog. She was the wife of Hugh I. Coombs. They were married for 52 years on August 29, 2006. Mrs. Coombs was a member of Mount Calvary Church, Elizabethtown. A missionary, she and her husband served in East Africa including Congo, Tanzania and Kenya. While in the mission field, Mrs. Coombs used her ventriloquism talents to enhance her ministry and was known to have a love for people She was a graduate of Wheaton College in Illinois, had a year of post graduate study at Columbia International University in South Carolina and was also a certified practical nurse. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters , Lois, wife of Gary Watanabe, South Carolina; Mim, wife of Beau Ellison, California and five grandchildren. Byron H. Bushong, 91, of Bainbridge, died Wednesday, February 14, 2007 at the VA Medical Center, Lebanon. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Howard B. and Frances Mellinger Bushong. He was married to Mary K. Kistler Bushong for 48 years. Mr. Bushong was a member of the Artisan's Lodge. He retired as a crew leader from Armstrong in 1977. He was a US Navy veteran of WWII. He was preceded in death by a sister, Grace Centini. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Judith M. Hill, Tuscon, AZ, a son, Neal Bushong, Lancaster, five grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren 10 great great grandchildren, and a sister Doris M. Fellin, Weatherly. CHARLES C. "BUD" WHITE
Charles "Bud" Clair White of 595 E. Hummelstown St., Elizabethtown, PA, died on February 19, 2007 at age 76. Bud was born in Warren, PA on June 25, 1930. Son of the late Thomas C. White , Sr. and Jane B. Sloan of Middletown, PA, he was a 1948 graduate of Middletown High School. In 1950, Bud began his Federal Civil Service career working for the Department of the Air Force at Olmsted AFB in Middletown. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served his country from 1952-53 as a veteran of the
Korean War. Bud returned home to work again at the base in aircraft instrumentation, electronics, and mechanics. He married Susan Kathryn Myers of Elizabethtown and moved to W. Bainbridge St. and later to S. Market St. The base closing in 1965 resulted in relocation to Waldorf, MD where Bud worked as an electronics and chemical technician for the U. S. Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Washington , D.C. until his retirement in 1982. In 1987, Bud and Sue returned home to live in Elizabethtown. Bud's community involvement through the years included memberships in the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 410, Veterans of Foreign War Post 5667, American Legion Post 329, and most recently the Abraham C. Treichler Lodge #682 F&AM. He also supported his children in the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America. Surviving are his beloved wife of 52 years, Susan; daughter, Elizabeth A. Walther and husband John of Mechanicsville, MD; sons , Stephen T. White and wife Jerri of Leesburg, VA; Richard C. White of Newburg, MD; and Andrew A. White and wife Diane of Clements, MD; sister, Ana J. Slover and husband Robert of Vevay, IN; brother, David S. White of Green Cove Springs, FL; six grandchildren, two step grandchildren, one great grandchild, and one step great grandchild. His brother, Thomas C. The White family will receive friends and loved ones from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, February 23 for a viewing at the Miller/Sekely Funeral Services on 130 N. Market St., Elizabethtown. A Masonic Service will be conducted by Abraham C. Treichler Lodge on Friday evening. The memorial service will be held on the Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. preceded by a viewing. Pallbearers will be sons Stephen, Richard, and Andrew, and grandsons Timothy and John Walther, and Nathaniel White . Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons Michael Walther, Thomas and Brenden White , and step grandson Brandon Russell. Graveside services will be held at Geyer's Hillsdale Cemetery, Londonderry Township, PA where Bud will rest peacefully with other members of his family.
