Harriet K. Swigart
MCVEYTOWN — Harriet K. Swigart, 76, of S.R. 103 South, McVeytown, died at 1 a.m. Friday, Sept. 2, 2005, at her home.
Born June 26, 1929, in Strinestown, York County, she was a daughter of the late Ralph and Mary (Kauffman) Kern. Her husband, Craig K. Swigart, whom she married May 28, 1953, survives.
Also surviving are three sons , Craig R., of McVeytown, Steven C. and wife Kari, of Belleville, Thomas K. and wife Sherre, of Duncannon; a sister, Jane Nade of Strinestown; and six grandchildren, Katelin, Daniel, Nathan, Nicole, Luke and Levi.
She was preceded in death by three brothers , three sisters and an infant granddaughter, Erin Swigart.
She was a graduate of New Cumberland High School and the Polyclinic School of Nursing, Harrisburg.
A retired registered nurse, she was previously employed at Polyclinic and Lewistown hospitals, as well as in home nursing.
She was a member of the McVeytown Presbyterian Church, and early in life she served as a Cub Scout den leader.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 S. Market St., McVeytown, with the Rev. Jeannette Mater officiating. Interment will be in Mattawana Cemetery, McVeytown.
Friends may call from 1:30 p.m. until the time of service Sunday at the funeral home.

Walter E. Krout Sr.
MIFFLINTOWN — Walter E. Krout, Sr., 67, of Mifflintown, died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, at Manor Care Nursing and Rehab Center, Elizabethtown.
Mr. Krout worked for the Mifflin County School District in maintenance for 33 years. A loving and caring Father , grandfather, and great-grandfather, he enjoyed spending time with his family and especially enjoyed playing golf.
Born March 26, 1938, in Lewistown, he was the son of the late Raymond E. and Daisy K. Fowler Krout.
He is survived by four daughters , Kathy E. Hall of Cartersville, Ga.; Andrea K. married to Brian McNece, of Mount Joy; Susan E. married to Raymond Lambert, of Fayetteville, N.C.; and Beth A. married to Paul Murphy Sr., of Woodstock, Ga.; two sons , Walter E. Jr., married to Marsha Krout, of Maryville, Tenn., and Stephen C., of Lafayette, Ind.; 13 grandchildren; a great-grandson; two sisters , Doloris C. married to Alan Deamer, and Sharon R. Lockhart, both of York; and a brother, Donald C. married to Barbara Krout, of Milford, Del.
Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of his family. If desired, memorial contributions in Walter’s name may be made to Manheim Christian Day School, 686 Lebanon Road, Manheim, PA 17545.

Grace P. Hartley
LEWISTOWN — Grace P. Hartley, 86, of 314 Summit Drive, Lewistown, died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, at her residence
Born April 25, 1919, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin F. Persing and Ruth N. (Bingaman) Persing. Her husband, Clair M. Hartley, whom she married Jan. 27, 1940, survives.
She is survived by a son, Milton L. Hartley and wife Linda, New Bloomfield; a daughter, Marlene G. Leister and husband Ted, McClure; grandchildren, Todd Leister and wife Theresa, Michele Sweitzer and husband Jeff, Gregory Leister, Michael Hartley and wife Tara, Jill Hartley and Monica Hartley; great-grandchildren, Dakhota and Cade Sweitzer and Wilson Hartley; and a niece, Elizabeth Fogleman, McAlistervile.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Edna Notestine.
She was employed at the American Viscose Corporation from 1959 to 1972 in the cake converting department, and later at Lewistown Sportswear for 8 years, retiring in 1981.
She was a member of the First Church of the Brethren, Lewistown, and the Moose Ladies Auxiliary.
She enjoyed playing bingo.
Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at the Hoenstine Funeral Home, 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Douglas D. Sherlock Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park.
Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

Leroy W. ‘Barney’ Orner
REEDSVILLE — Leroy W. “Barney” Orner, 85, of 91 King St., Reedsville, died at 9:45 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005, at the Hearthside Nursing Home, State College.
Born Dec. 13, 1920, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late Carl E. Orner, Sr. and Nellie I. (Clark) Orner. His wife, Mazie (Ramsey) Orner, whom he married on March 2, 1940, survives.
Also surviving is their son, Ronald L. “Butch” Orner, Milroy; a grandson, Tyler Orner, Milroy; a niece and nephew whom he raised, Vicky Moore, Reedsville, Douglas R. Myers, Milroy and a brother, Carl E. Orner, Jr., New Providence.
He was preceded in death by two sisters , Rosetta Loudenslager and Ruth Clark.
He was employed for 42 years at Standard Steel in Burnham in Machine Shop II.
He was an avid amateur radio operator and enjoyed his trips to Florida.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005 at the Hoenstine Funeral Home, Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown with the Rev. Marshall Deckard officiating.
Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be private at the Church Hill Cemetery.

Frank J. Schmidt
REEDSVILLE — Frank J. Schmidt, 80, of 50 Taylor Dr., Reedsville, died at 10:10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, 2005 at his residence.
Born June 15, 1925, in Reedsville, he was a son of the late David M. and Margaret Z. (Freet) Schmidt. His wife, Clara E. “Bridgie” (Carson) Schmidt, whom he married on Oct. 15, 1949, survives.
He is survived by his children, Frank Jeffrey Schmidt, Carlisle, Mark Douglas Schmidt, Elizabethtown, sisters Jean E. Clark, Fla., Gladys Pauline Brown, Baltimore, Md. and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Verbert Larue Schmidt, on Jan. 28, 1966.
He was a retired mechanic, having worked for 34 years as the owner and operator of Schmidt’s garage in Reedsville.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Lewistown, for 46 years, the Reedsville Fire Company and he attended Lewistown High School.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the First Baptist Church, 111 E. Third St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Caleb Miller officiating.
There will be no public viewing. Interment will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Milroy.

Helen M. Renz
MIFFLINTOWN — Helen M. Renz, 79, of RR 1, Mifflintown, passed away peacefully at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, 2005, at her home surrounded by her family.
Born Aug. 21, 1926 in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Catherine (O’Neill) Bennett. Her husband, John J. Renz, whom she married on May 4, 1946, survives her.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Nancy Robbins, Lewistown, Jack Renz, Bensalem, Peggy Hane, Bensalem, Joe Renz, Levittown, Mike Renz, McClure; 10 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
She was the last of her immediate family having been preceded in death by one brother and three sisters .
She was a member of St. Jude’s Catholic Church, Mifflintown, where she served as the Treasurer of the Ladies Guild.
She was a homemaker and dedicated her life to her family and she especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005 from her church, St. Jude’s Catholic Church, RR 4, Mifflintown with the Rev. Father John Bateman officiating. Interment will follow in the Old Church Hill Cemetery, RR 2, Port Royal.
As per Helen’s request there will be no public viewing. However, family will receive friends from noon until 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown.
