Margaretta L. “Marg” Karschner
McALISTERVILLE — Margaretta Lorraine “Marg” Karschner, 75, of RR #2, McAlisterville, Fayette Township, Juniata County, entered into eternal rest at 7:35 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004, at the home of her grandson, Marlin R. Spickler, who along with close friend, Rocky Reinhart, Jr., provided not only a loving home environment but also gave sincere care during her illness.
Born on May 23, 1929 in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Cloyd Andrew and Mary Savilla (Schilling) Snook. Her loving husband, Marlin Leonard Karschner, Sr., whom she married Jan. 1, 1947 in Charlestown, Md., survives. Her passing breaks a strong marital union of more than 57 years.
Also surviving are: children, Marlin L. Karschner, Jr. and wife Judy of Lewistown, Cloyd A. Karschner, Carol L. Spickler, both of RR#2, McClure, Betty V. Heim of Pennsdale, Pa., and Wanda E. Fultz of Lewistown; sister, Luella Dobson of Milroy, 13 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and three generations of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by: daughter Gladys Savilla Karschner; an infant in 1951; and sisters , Florence Wagner and Stella Mengle.
She was educated in Mifflin County schools and was employed 1968-1979 when she retired from the Beaver Shoe Factory, Beaver Springs, due to disability.
She was protestant by faith.
Family was the center of her life and she spent much quality time with them. She enjoyed cooking, canning, gardening and loved animals.
Her memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, at Salem United Methodist Church, New Lancaster Valley, with grandson Marlin officiating and Jeff Buch assisting. As per her wishes, there will be no viewing.
Burial will be at a later date at the discretion of the family, in Samuel’s Cemetery, RR#2, McClure.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made, in loving memory of Margaretta, to the Mifflin-Juniata Area Agency on Aging, P.O. Box 750, 1 Buena Vista Circle, Lewistown, PA 17044.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the George P. Garman Funeral Home, Inc., Mount Pleasant Mills, PA.
Arthur ‘Sharer’ Bookwalter
MECHANICSBURG — Arthur “Sharer” Bookwalter, 79, of Mechanicsburg, Monroe Twp., died Oct. 27, 2004 at home. He was born Oct. 7, 1925 in Perry County to the late Jenny Sharer.
He was preceded in death by a spouse, Dorothy (Felmly) Bookwalter.
He is survived by his companion, Janie Knepp of newport and a sister, Susan Adkins of Chesapeake Bay, Ohio.
He was a carpenter and he also worked at West Shore Farmers Market. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #34, the Newport Social Order of the Owls, the newport American Legion Post #177, the Millerstown Loyal Order of Moose #925, the Hunters Valley Sportsmen Assoc. and the Bartenders Assoc. of Newport. He was an Army veteran of WW II.
A viewing will be held Tuesday, from 6 to 8 p.m. and the funeral will be Wednesday, at 1 p.m., at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bucks Methodist Church Cemetery, Newport with full military honors by the New Bloomfield V.F.W. and the Newport American Legion.

EAST WATERFORD - Betty S. Zeiders, 73, of Main St., East Waterford, died at 4:15 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at her home.
Born, Dec. 4, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Ella (McClintock) Shaw. Her husband, Lester E. Zeiders, preceded her in death, Feb. 7 2002.
Surviving are: two sons , Paul E. Zeiders and wife, Carol L., 811 W. Fifth St., Lewistown, and Gary B. Zeiders and wife, Carol Ann, East Waterford; two brothers , Raymond Shaw, Newport, and Paul Shaw, RR1, East Waterford; and five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
She and her late husband had owned and operated the former Zeiders’ Store and Restaurant in East Waterford. Later she had baked pies for 16 years for the former White House Restaurant, East Waterford.
She was a member of the East Waterford Presbyterian Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher for many years. She had been attending the McCoysville Presbyterian Church.
She was a former Cub Scout Den mother for many years, Pack #64 East Waterford.
She was a member of the East Waterford Fire Co. Ladies Aux., the Lack-Tuscarora EMS Aux., the East Waterford Holiday Council and the Dorsett Grange #1888, Concord, Pa.
She attended the East Waterford Senior Citizens Center where she enjoyed Peppi Exercises.
Her funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal, with the Rev. Graham C. Fowler officiating. Interment will be in East Waterford Cemetery.
A viewing will be held 7 to 9 p.m. today, Nov. 8, 2004, at the funeral home.

Robert E. Hammond
LEWISTOWN — Robert E. Hammond, 58, of Rear 405 S. Wayne St., Lewistown died at 10:45 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004 at his home.
Born Sept. 29, 1946, in Mifflin County, he was a son of the late Eugene M. Sr. and Alberta M. (Grove) Hammond. His wife, Ruth A. (Kester) Hammond, whom he married Nov. 15, 1991, survives.
Also surviving are: stepchildren, Gweenda Greer Turnbull of Arkansas, Eddie S. Greer of Lewistown, Linda Greer, William T. Reynolds, both of Mississippi, Christopher DeArment of Lewistown, Sarah Porter of Mount Union, Julie Sechrest of Shirleysburg, Robert Porter of Kistler and Kathy Bair of Needmore; brother, Eugene M. Hammond Jr. of Duncansville; 21 stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brother William Hammond.
He was a retired U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam Conflict.
He enjoyed playing the guitar, cooking and baking, and he loved his children and grandchildren.
Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, is in charge of the arrangements.
David F. Smith
LEWISTOWN — David F. Smith, 98, of 325 N. Grand St., Lewistown, died at 7:20 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at his home.
Born Feb. 13, 1906 in Lewistown, he was the son of the late David Wilson and Sarah E. (Eby) Smith. His wife, Margaret A. (Swyers) Smith, preceded him in death on April 16, 1987.
He is survived by: stepson Donald G. Yerg of Houghton, Mich.; sister Sara Jones of Lewistown; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by: stepson Lindley Yerg; and sister Mrs. John (Jennie) Wolfgang.
He was a self-employed gunsmith from 1927 until his retirement in the 1990s.
He was a staff sergeant with the U.S. Army Air Force.
He was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lewistown.
His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Leroy Reitz officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until time of service at the funeral home. Interment will be in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Lewistown.

Darle L. Hesser
McVEYTOWN — Darle L. Hesser, 72, of State Route 103 South, McVeytown, died at 9:46 a.m., Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, at Bon Secours-Holy Family Regional Hospital in Altoona.
Born Sept. 19, 1932, in Bratton Twp., he was a son of the late Aaron L. and Helen (Moist) Hesser. His wife, Sarah A. (Moist) Hesser, whom he married June 30, 1953 survives.
Also surviving are: a daughter, Sherry Trgovac of Lewistown; two brothers , Ronald A. of McVeytown, Richard F. of Lewistown;a sister; Donna Jane Varner of McVeytown; his mother -in-law, Mrs. Harold (Lorma) Moist of McVeytown; and a special friend, Craig R. Swigart of McVeytown.
He was preceded in death by an infant sister.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict and was employed as a boiler technician for 43 years at the former FMC Corp., Avtex Fibers, and Lewistown Specialty Yarns, retiring in 1998.
He was an active member of the Ryde United Methodist Church and Bible Sunday school class, he also served as a trustee and lay leader, and was a former chairperson of the church council.
He enjoyed helping with the church food stand at Grassmyer’s Auction House in Mattawana, and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 13, Lewistown, and a life-member of the National Rifle Assoc. He was an avid outdoorsman and sportsman.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2004, at the Ryde United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert A. Brown Sr. officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Mattawana, with military honors conducted by VFW Post 7011, Lewistown.

John R. Renno
LEWISBURG — John R. Renno, 80, went to be with his Lord Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004 at River Woods, Lewisburg. He was born July 9, 1924 in Belleville, Mifflin County the son of the late John B. and Mollie E. Peachey Renno. He moved to Luzerne County in 1957 and to the Danville area in 1970. From Danville, he moved to Montandon, Pa. in Aug. 1992 and had been a resident of Emmanuel Home in Northumberland.
Mr. Renno was a self-employed farmer and truck driver retiring in 1990. He was a member of Ridgeview Evangelical Free Church, Northumberland. He enjoyed Bible studies, writing Bible commentaries and conversing with people.
He is survived by his wife 58 years, Salina M. Peachey whom he married Nov. 29, 1945. He is also survived by four sons : Daniel R. Renno and his wife Fay of Danville, Joseph J. Renno and his wife Darlene of Souderton, William L. and his wife Sharon of Danville and Timothy P. and his wife Judith of Milton, and one daughter, Irene M. Lepley and her husband David of Carlisle; 20 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; a sister, Malinda Peachey of Belleville also survives him.
Three infant children preceded Mr. Renno in death. Five brothers : Joshua, Crist, David, Jonas, and Eli Renno; and two sisters , Mary Swarey and Nancy Yoder also preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 18, from the Sunbury Bible Church, Rt. 11, Northumberland, with Pastor John Patti of the Ridgeview Evangelical Free Church officiating.
Friends will be received Wednesday, Nov. 17, from 4 to 6 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the church and also from 9:30 a.m., Thursday until the time of service at the church.
A second service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 19, from the Locust Grove Mennonite Church in Belleville. Burial will follow in the Locust Grove Mennonite Cemetery in Belleville.
Friends will be received from 10 a.m., until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Emmanuel Home, 800 Priestly Ave., Northumberland, PA 17857.

George F. Cavanaugh
LEWISTOWN - George F. Cavanaugh, 71, of 324 Caldwell Hill Road, Lewistown, died Monday, Nov. 10, 2003, at Harrisburg Hospital.
Born Nov. 8, 1932 in Lewistown, he was the son of the late Joseph A. and Lillian G. Cavanaugh. His wife, Barbara (VanBoskirk) Cavanaugh, whom he married on Jan. 11, 1958, survives.
Also surviving are a son, Brian D. Cavanaugh, North Carolina; and siblings, Mrs. Charles (Eva) Forgy, Newton Hamilton, Donald Cavanaugh, R.D. McVeytown, Kay Kenepp of West Chester and Ray A. Cavanaugh, Lewistown.
He was preceded in death by siblings Marvin Cavanaugh and Patricia Rome.
He owned and operated Cavanaugh's Construction and was the superintendent of Juniata Memorial Park before retiring in 1994. After retirement, he was a courier for Omega Labs.
He served with the U.S. Army.
He was a member of F&AM Lodge 203 in Lewistown, Tall Cedars Lodge 88, Mifflintown, AACR Consistory Valley of Harrisburg, a lifetime member of the West Granville Fire Company and the Juniata Valley Pistol Club and a member of Centre Union Church.
There will be no viewing or services.
