Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Norman E. Master

MCALISTERVILLE — Norman E. Master, 61, of RR 1, McAlisterville, died at 8:20 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at Hershey Medical Center.
He was born March 5, 1944, in Danville, the son of the late Paul William and Anna Mae (Niemond) Master. His wife, Norma E. (Kennedy) Master, whom he married on June 29, 1963, survives.
In addition to his wife, also surviving are: a son, Timothy E. Master, of RR 2, McAlisterville, and fiance Pam Werner; two daughters , Christine S. Kline and husband Douglas, Oriental, and Sharon L. Wehler and husband Timothy, HC-63, Mifflintown; a brother, Robert E. Master and wife Jane, RR 2, McAlisterville; an aunt, Betty Hoffman, RR 1, Richfield; six grandchildren, Rachel Marie Master, Stephanie Lynn Kline, Nicholas Andrew Kline, Corinne Marie Wehler, Kylie Michelle Wehler and Sky Amber Master; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was a 1962 graduate of East Juniata High School and a member of the Bunkertown Church of the Brethren, where he served on the church board and the steward commission.
He was employed by Ingram Micro, Harrisburg. Earlier in life, he was the manager of Orweco Frocks, Mifflintown, for almost 20 years and worked in numerous dress factories.
He enjoyed playing golf and was an avid baseball fan who coached little league baseball in his early years. However, his greatest joy was spending time with family and attending the activities of his grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from the Bunkertown Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Eugene Heidler officiating. Interment will follow in Goodwill Cemetery, Bunkertown.
Viewing will be held from 9 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bunkertown Church of the Brethren, Building Fund, 20 Bunkertown Road, McAlisterville, PA 17049.
The McAlisterville Chapel of Brown Funeral Homes Inc., 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, is in charge of the arrangements.

Merrill Abram Cutshall

LEWISTOWN — Merrill Abram Cutshall, 81, of East Fourth Street, Lewistown, went to be with the Lord from HCR ManorCare, Carlisle, after a long series of illnesses.
He was born Aug. 29, 1923, in Derry Township, Mifflin County, the son of the late Lloyd Cutshall and Minerva J. (Eckenberger) Cutshall. His wife of 53 years, Janet A. (Hantz) Cutshall, preceded him in death.
Surviving are: children, Steven M. Cutshall and wife Jane, Shiremanstown, Pa; a sister, Florence E. Ort, New Cumberland; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Cutshall.
He worked for the A&P food stores both before and after entering the Navy. He was also a block operator, working for the Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central and Conrail for 33 years.
He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II.
He was a member of the Paintersville C&MA Church. He was an avid sportsman and served the community, working first as a deputy fish warden and then for many years as a game warden.
His funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Barr Funeral Home Inc., 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Jerry Wise officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park.
The viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to his church: Paintersville C&MA Church, 3195 Back Maitland Road, Lewistown, PA 17044.

James F. Ripka Sr.

YEAGERTOWN —James F. Ripka Sr., 65, of 300 Second St., Yeagertown, died at 6:40 a.m. Wednesday, April 7, 2005, at Fox Chase Cancer Center, in Philadelphia.
He was born July 9, 1939, in Lewistown, a son of the late Eugene and Bessie (Fowler) Ripka. His wife of 46 years, Roseann (Hartman) Ripka, survives.
Also surviving are: children, Delann Colyer and husband James, Yeagertown, and James F. Ripka Jr. and wife Judy, Puyallup, Wash.; two brothers , Eugene “Buck” Ripka and Russell Ripka, both of Lewistown; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Delores Brower, and a brother-in-law, Marlin Brower.
Jim retired from Weis Markets in July 1999 after 43 years of service. He was chief of the Yeagertown Fire Company for 13 years and a Derry Township supervisor for 17. During his term as supervisor, he was instrumental in the formation of the Mifflin County Regional Police Department, also serving on its board of directors. In addition, he served on the board of directors of the Mifflin County Solid Waste Authority and Fame EMS. He was a life member of the Yeagertown Fire Company and a member of the East Derry, Highland Park and Burnham fire companies. He was also a member of the Moose, Elks, Eagles, and Lewistown Masonic Lodges, and a lifetime member of Lewistown DeMolay.
He coached the Yeagertown Bandits midget football team for six years and also umpired the Yeagertown Little League and Junior Babe Ruth baseball teams for many years.
His funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 108 First Ave., Burnham, with the Rev. Marshall Deckard and Miss Vicki Elmer officiating. Interment will be in Birch Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, his family requests memorials be made to the Fox Chase Cancer Center, 333 Cottman Ave., Philadelphia, PA 1911-2497.

Robert A. Goodman Sr.

LEWISTOWN — Robert A. Goodman Sr., 89, a resident of Beverly Healthcare William Penn, and formerly of Juniata Terrace, died at 3 a.m. Thursday, April 7, 2005, at the nursing home.
Barr Funeral Home Inc., Lewistown, is in charge of the arrangements, which will be announced later.

Robert A. Haughwout

STOCKTON, Calif. — Robert A. Haughwout, 89, passed away Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, in Stockton, Calif.
He was born July 22, 1915, in Montclair, N.J.
He served in the U.S. Merchant Marines from 1942 to 1945.
He graduated from Princeton University and then went on to Stockton, where he was a practicing criminal-research lawyer for 48 years. In his free time he was an avid sailor.

Laentena Esther Shelley

PORT ROYAL — Laentena Esther Shelley, 102, of Brookline Manor, RR 1, Mifflintown, and formerly of Port Royal, died at 1:55 p.m. Thursday, April 7, 2005, at the manor.
She was born Feb. 7, 1903, in Milford Township, Juniata County, a daughter of the late Charles Marley and Annie (Oberholtzer) McCahan. Her husband, Dr. Penrose Herr Shelley, preceded her in death April 11, 1959.
Surviving are: a son, Dr. Penn P. Shelley, Chatham, N.J.; three nephews, Ralph Kepner, Port Royal, Earl Kepner, Belleville, and Keith McCahan, Vero Beach, Fla.; a niece, Joy Sheaffer, Port Royal; three grandchildren, Mark Shelley, Westminster, Colo., Scott Shelley and Douglas Shelley, both of Summit, N.J.; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by two sisters , Jane Book and Rhoda Kepner, and a brother, Walter McCahan.
She was a 1922 graduate of Mifflintown High School and attended Susquehanna and Millersville universities.
She was a former elementary school teacher, having taught in Mifflin and Juniata counties and Chester, Pa.
She was a member of the Port Royal Presbyterian Church, the Thomas Mifflin Chapter of the daughters of the American Revolution, the Juniata County Historical Society, and the Mifflin-Juniata Arts Committee.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Port Royal Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Carol E. Davis officiating. Interment will be in Old Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal.
Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal, and from 10 a.m. until time of service Monday at the church.
Memorial donations may be made to the Port Royal Presbyterian Church, PO Box 387, Port Royal, PA 17082.

Anthony D. Jones

LEWISTOWN — Anthony D. Jones, 96, of 706 Valley St., Lewistown, died at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 7, 2005, at his residence.
He was born Feb. 14, 1909, in Osceola Mills, a son of the late Paul and Kathryn Jones. His wife, Flora I. Jones, preceded him in death on Aug. 8, 1994.
Surviving are: a stepson, Charles Thomas, Va.; two siblings, Kathryn Dickson, Osceola Mills, and Bernice Hughes, New Liberty; and two grandchildren, David and Vicky Thomas.
He was self employed, running a business in Philipsburg that supplied bakery goods retail and wholesale. Later in life, he worked at Lewistown Auto.
He attended St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lewistown, and was a life member of Brooklyn and City fire companies, Philipsburg Elks, and Moose Lodge 143, Lewistown.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Barr Funeral Home Inc., 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Gary Roth officiating. Interment will be in Lind Memorial Cemetery.
The viewing will be held at 12:30 p.m., with services by the moose lodge at 1:15 p.m., Monday at the funeral home.

Marlyn E. Schultz Sr.

LEWISTOWN — Marlyn E. Schultz Sr., 77, of 230 Glendale Ave., Lewistown, died at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at his home.
Born Nov. 21, 1927, in Burnham, he was a son of the late Michael J. and Tecla A. (Larson) Schultz. His wife, Anna K. (Palmer) Schultz, whom he married Oct. 9, 1946, survives.
Also surviving are children, Terry M. Schultz, and wife, Bonnie, of Reading, Maryln E. Schultz Jr., and wife, Dawn, R. Scott Schultz, and wife, Pamela, all of Lewistown; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers , John and James Schultz; and two sisters , Elizabeth Tate and Claire Kephart.
He was a 1945 graduate of Lewistown High School.
He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict.
He was employed at Standard Steel, Burnham, for 28 years, retiring in 1979.
He was a member of the Mifflintown VFW.
His memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 108 First Ave., Burnham, with the Rev. J. Faust Hissong officiating.
In lieu of flowers, his family requests memorials be made to Hospice: the Bridge, 400 Highland Ave., Second Floor, Lewistown, PA 17044.

Evelyn M. Hobble

LEWISTOWN — Evelyn M. Hobble, 57, of 305 S. Pine Road, Lot 17, Lewistown, died at 9:05 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at her home.
Born Dec. 27, 1947, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Cornelius Moore and Mary (Hesser) Cavanaugh.
She is survived by children, Beverly Goss, Gralen Hobble Jr. and Todd Hobble, all of Lewistown; sister, Bonnie Havice, of Lewistown; and grandchildren, Ashley, Amber, Nathan, Tyler and Alexis.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother and sister.
She was a homemaker and a member of Pine Glen Church of The Brethren. She also was a member of the Moose Family Center 143 and the Gold Star pool team.
Her graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at Pine Glen Church of the Brethren Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hoenstine Funeral Home, Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown.

Frederick E. Rhoades, Sr.

DANVILLE — Frederick E. Rhoades, Sr., 53, of 450 Ertley Rd., McClure, died at 7:05 p.m. Friday, June 10, 2005 at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa.
Born June 29, 1951 in Milroy, he was the son of Fred J. Rhoades and Gladys L. (Wray) Rhoades, of 215 Oak St., Milroy. His wife, Karen S. (Turner) Rhoades, survives.
Also surviving are his children Fred E. Rhoades, Jr. and wife Tracey, Milroy, Daniel J. Rhoades and wife Stacy, Rock Creek, Ohio, David L. Rhoades and wife Jennifer, Strodes Mills, Esther M. (Rhoades) Purdy and husband Robert, Mill Creek; step children Renee L. Baker and husband Calvin, Burnham, Stephanie M. Hetrick and husband Eric, Spring Mills, Lisa A. Lauver and husband Matthew, Spruce Hill, Anastacia D. Bulick and husband Trent, Milroy; brothers Timothy T. Rhoades and wife Doriann, Milroy, John G Rhoades and wife Kim, Milroy; sisters Edith Mae Carter and husband Thomas, Sr., Milroy, Ellen M. Price and husband Clare, Sr., Thompsontown; numerous nieces and nephews; and 15 grandchildren.
He was employed as an independent delivery contractor for The Lewistown Sentinel.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday June 15 at the Belltown Cemetery officiated by the Rev. Paul E. J. Fultz.
There will be no public viewing.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Infectious Disease Research or the American Heart Association.

Bertha A. Foltz

LEWISTOWN — Bertha A. Foltz, 76, of Malta Home, Granville, formerly of Mifflintown died at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, June 12, 2005 in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital.
Born June 12, 1929 in Markelsville, she was a daughter of the late Walter Leroy and Helen Marie Criley Rauch. Her husband, Alvin H. Foltz died on May 18, 1992.
She is survived by two daughters , Wilma Jean Ptomey, Pittsburgh and Brenda E. Hefflin of Lewistown; brothers and sisters , Margaret Kahley, Waynesville, NC, Janet Otte, Brownstown, IN, Carl Rauch, Liverpool, David Rauch, Jefferson ville, IN, Gary Rauch, Port Royal, Rita Dressler, Mifflin and Ruby Adair, Lewistown, six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister, Leon Rauch, Leroy Rauch and Ethel Hepner.
She was a seamstress at RaeSel, Port Royal and enjoyed playing guitar, crocheting, making crafts and playing with her grandchildren.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown with Pastor Judy Rowles officiating. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Mifflintown. There will be a viewing from 10 am until the time of the services Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Guss Funeral Home, 20 South Third St., Mifflintown 17059.
