Alverta M. Woodling
LEWISTOWN — Alverta M. Woodling, 80, of 163 Summit Drive, Lewistown, died at 4:25 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at Beverly Healthcare-William Penn.
She was born May 7, 1924, in Mount Union, a daughter of the late Thomas and Mabel (Shields) DeArment. Her husband, Elmont F. “Dutch” Woodling, preceded her in death.
She is survived by siblings, Fern DeArment, of McVeytown, Robert DeArment, of Strodes Mills, Betty Boring, of Ohio and Shirley Swartz, of Burnham.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers .
She was a homemaker.
Her funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, at Barr Funeral Home Inc., 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Raymond Hill officiating. Interment will be in Birch Hill Cemetery, Burnham. Her viewing will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.
Gladys (Rittenhouse) Bartlett
SIMSBURY, Conn. — Gladys (Rittenhouse) Bartlett, 85, of Simsbury, Conn., beloved wife of the late Robert Bartlett, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington, Conn.
Born in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Harry E. and Sylvia (Rebman) Rittenhouse Sr. and she has lived in Simsbury, Conn., for most of her life.
She retired in 1985 from the United Bank and Trust of Simsbury Senior Center, and in her spare time loved crocheting and quilting.
She is survived by: a son, Raymond Bartlett and his wife, Susan, Granby, Conn.; a daughter, Patricia Kendall and her husband, Ned, Simsbury, Conn.; two brothers , James and Charles Rittenhouse; four sisters , Helen Espigh, Mary Maxwell, Virginia Harshbarger and Hazel Fisher, all of Pennsylvania ; five grandchildren, Sharon Ferreira, Simsbury, Conn., Edward Kendall, Granby, Conn., Paul Bartlett, Granby, Conn., and Heidi Arre and Alicia Bartlett, both of Simsbury, Conn.,; and three great-grandchildren, Cody Ferreira, Winstead, Conn., and Jackson and Charles Kendall, both of Granby, Conn.
She was preceded by: two sons , James and Robert Bartlett.
Funeral services and burial are private and at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.

Sara E. Hunter
MILROY — Sara E. Hunter, 82, of 122 Valley Trail, Milroy, died at 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at William Penn Nursing Home, Lewistown.
She was born Aug. 31, 1922, a daughter of the late William Brown and Stella Jane (Zettle) Nale. Her husband, Orlando Dixon Hunter, preceded her in death June 23, 1994.
She is survived by children, O. David Hunter, and wife Kay, of Milroy and C. Jane Stringer, and husband, E. Edward, of Milroy; and sister, Mrs. Lester (Patricia) Lauver, of Milroy; and five grandchildren, Stella J. Kaufman, Michael D. Hunter, Jeffery D. Hunter, Angela J. Kerstetter, Lizzie J. Stringer; and six great-grandchildren, Jeffery S. Metzgar, Jared D. and Lane P. Hunter, Emma J. Alexis R. and Andrew D. Kerstetter.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Judith Faye Hunter, in 1947; siblings, Verna Gray, Leo B. Nale and John A. Nale Sr.
She was a 1940 graduate of Milroy High School.
Earlier in life she worked as a telephone operator in Reedsville.
She was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church, Havice Valley, where she taught the True Blue Sunday school class.
Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, at Bohn Funeral Home, Reedsville, with Marshall Deckard and Vicki L. Elmer officiating. Interment will be in Salem Cemetery, Siglerville. Her viewing will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.

Carole E. Franklin
STATE COLLEGE —Carole E. Franklin, 62, of State College, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at The Hearthside, State College.
Born April 20, 1943, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Lloyd N. and Lulu (Kline) Peters.
Surviving are: three sons , Thomas L. Franklin and his wife, LuAnn, Spring Mills, Brian N. Franklin, Ebensburg, and Robert L. Franklin, Gautier, Miss.; one sister, Kathryn V. Rieffannacht, Lewistown; and six grandchildren, Megan Franklin and Lydia Franklin, Spring Mills, Heather Franklin, State College, Mitchell Franklin, Gautier, Miss., and Brandon Franklin and Patricia Franklin, both of Ebensburg.
She grew up with her “aunt Sue” Snook, Lewistown.
She was a 1961 graduate of Chief Logan High School.
She attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Lewistown.
She worked as a secretary for many years.
A funeral service and internment will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2005 at Mount Rock Cemetery, Lewistown, with the Pastor Carrie Swigart officiating.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 29, 2005, at the Wetzler Funeral Home, 206 N. Spring St., Bellefonte.
Thomas J. Fisher
MOUNT UNION — Thomas J Fisher, 39, of Gallagher Street, Mount Union, died unexpectedly Monday, April 25, 2005, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon.
Born Feb. 15, 1966, in Lewistown, he was a son of Betty J. (Kauffman) Price, Lubbock, Texas , and Dwight E. Fisher, Lewistown.
Also surviving are a stepfather, Doyle C. Price, Lubbock; a sister, Lee Alexander and husband Wayne, Wichita Falls, Texas ; a brother, Randall S. Fisher and wife Virginia, Temple, Texas ; maternal grandmother, Margaret Kauffman, Mattawana; three nieces; two nephews; and a devoted friend and caretaker, Jean Montes.
He was a 1984 graduate of the Lewistown Special Education program.
He enjoyed participating in the Special Olympics, loved the outdoors, and was an avid walker.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 S. Market St., McVeytown, with Pastor Michael Grove officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Mattawana.

Fred B. Morgan Sr.
ORBISONIA — Fred B. Morgan Sr., 75, of HCR 60, Orbisonia, died unexpectedly Tuesday morning, April 26, 2005, at home.
Born Sept. 10, 1929, in Shirley Township, Huntingdon County, he was a son of the late Lewis and Bertha (Shope) Morgan. He was married to the former Lois G. Krause on Dec. 24, 1949, at the Rockhill Church of the Brethren parsonage. Mrs. Morgan survives at their home.
Also surviving are: children, Dale W. Morgan and his wife, Susan, HCR 60, Orbisonia, Fred B. Morgan Jr. and his wife, Karen, Warriors Mark, Cynthia L. Brightbill and her husband, David, Orbisonia, and Carrie A. Morgan Varner, HCR 60, Orbisonia; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by: one granddaughter; two sons , David and Richard; three brothers ; and one sister.
Mr. Morgan was a life member of the Valley Point Church of the Brethren, HCR 60, Orbisonia, where he served as deacon emeritus. He also served on the Huntingdon County Republican Committee for 50 years holding the office of chairman for a number of years. He was a member of the Mount Union Area School District currently serving as president. He was also on the board of the Huntingdon County Career and Technical Institute and was president of the Shope Cemetery Association.
Mr. Morgan was a lifelong farmer and sawmiller. He was employed by PennDOT for eight years and for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission for 17 years. He retired from the Turnpike Commission.
Mr. Morgan was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 29, 2005, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia, with the Rev. Robert Detwiler officiating. Interment will be made at Shope Cemetery, HCR 60, Orbisonia. Friends may call at the funeral home 6-9 p.m. Thursday, April 28, 2005, and 9 a.m. until the hour of the service on Friday, April 29, 2005.
Eleanor Jane Shue
BELLEVILLE — Eleanor Jane Shue, 94, of Valley View Retirement Community, Belleville, died Friday, April 29, 2005, at Lewistown Hospital.
She was born Aug. 18, 1910, in Latrobe, a daughter of the late the Rev. Lawrence and Elva Stahl. Her husband, the Rev. Benjamin F. Shue, whom she married Sept. 15, 1939, survives at the retirement community.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Joyce Ruth Crescenzi and husband Charles, York; two sons , Lawrence John Shue and wife Linda, Greensboro, N.C., and Benjamin Franklin Shue II and wife Judy, Centre Hall; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Shue graduate from Ohio Wesleyan University, in Delaware, Ohio, as an English major. She served as an English teacher and elementary school teacher in the Johnstown, Lower Burrell and New Kensington school districts.
She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in State College, the American Bible Society and the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. Mrs. Shue was a gifted and devoted minister’s wife, a loving mother , grandmother, great-grandmother and a dedicated teacher.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the mausoleum of the Grandview Cemetery, 801 Millcreek Road, Johnstown, with the Rev. Thomas H. Jacobs, pastor of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in State College, officiating. Interment will be in the mausoleum.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service Monday at the mausoleum.

Mary F. Swartz
MCALISTERVILLE — Mary F. Swartz, 95, of the Locust Grove Retirement Village, HC-67, Mifflin, and formerly of RR 1, McAlisterville, died at 9:45 a.m. Friday, April 29, 2005, at the village.
She was born May 7, 1909, in Derry Township, Mifflin County, a daughter of the late Charles A. and Helen V. (Butler) Hoopes. Her husband, Lewis A. Swartz, preceded her in death on Nov. 12, 1962.
Surviving are two sons , Michael P. and Charles E. Swartz, both of RR 1, McAlisterville; and a daughter, Mary Lu Swartz, Shippensburg.
She was the last of her immediate family.
She was a self-employed farmer, making farming and family her life.
She was a member of St. Jude’s Catholic Church, Mifflintown, where she enjoyed the activities of the church.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon Tuesday at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, Mifflintown, with the Rev. John Bateman officiating. Interment will follow in Richfield Union Cemetery, Richfield.
Viewing will be held from 11 a.m. until time of service Tuesday a the church.

Lewis M. Maurer
LEWISBURG — Lewis M. Maurer, 87, of Outlook Pointe, and formerly of Walnut Street, Mifflinburg, passed away at 1:25 a.m. Thursday, April 28, 2005, at Evangelical Community Hospital.
He was born Oct. 24, 1917, in Jackson Township, Snyder County, a son of the late Benjamin and Ida Verdilla (Snyder) Maurer. His wife, Florence Irene Riland, whom he married on May 29, 1937, preceded him in death in 1997.
Surviving are two sons , Larry E. Maurer and wife Jane, RD, Mount Pleasant Mills, and LaRue M. Maurer and wife Faylene, RD, Lewistown; five grandchildren, Gary Maurer, Sandra Longer, Laurie Hackenberg, Mahlon Maurer and Wendy Stuck; and 11 great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Jason, Philip, Eric, Justin, Amber, Derek, Aimee, Jace, Robby and Ella.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Dorothy Marie Maurer; a brother, Jessie Maurer, in 1931; a sister, M. Isabel Herman, in 1998; and two grandchildren, Rodney and Becky.
Mr. Maurer farmed in both Snyder and Union counties and worked for 10 years at the Lewisburg Chair Factory. He retired in 1981.
He was of the United Church of Christ faith.
Mr. Maurer was a member of the American Farm Bureau Federation.
He enjoyed working and being on the farm.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Hummel Funeral Home, 574 Hill St., Middleburg, with the Rev. John Walters officiating. Interment will be in New Berlin Cemetery.
Friends may call before 1:30 p.m., with the family being present 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Saturday at the funeral home.

James O. Stine
LEWISTOWN — James O. Stine, 73, of Bratton Avenue, Lewistown, died at 2:28 p.m. Friday, April 29, 2005, at Lewistown Hospital.
Born Oct. 1, 1931, in McVeytown, he was a son of the late John W. and Nellie A. (Burdge) Stine. His wife, Grace J. (Kline) Stine, whom he married March 16, 1963, survives.
Also surviving are three children, Susan K. Boozel and husband Bertis W., RD, Lewistown, Rosalie A. Moffett, Belleville, and James R. Stine and wife Jeanne L., Lykens; two brothers , Walter R. Stine, McVeytown, and Leonard E. Stine, Elizabethtown; and four grandchildren, Jennifer Stine, Hannah Stine, Richard Boozel, and David Boozel.
He was preceded in death by two young brothers , John E. Stine and Richard Stine; and a stepbrother, C. Kenneth Long.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean conflict.
A truck driver for many years, he was employed by Noerr Motor Freight, Lewistown, and retired from Lewistown Borough.
He attended the Strodes Mills Baptist Church and the Men’s Sunday school class.
A collector of antique toy cars, he was also an antique automobile enthusiast.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 S. Market St., McVeytown, with the Revs. Jonathan God and Donald E. Peters Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Mount Union Cemetery.
