Frances Fisher Wray Defoe

WILMINGTON, Del. — Frances Fisher Wray Defoe, 82, of Wilmington, Del., passed away Feb. 26, 2005 in Christiana Hospital surrounded by her loving family.
Her husband of 50 years, Melvin Defoe, preceded her in death in 1997.
She is survived by: daughters and sons -in-law, Debbie and David Camp of Wilmington, Judie and Jesse Rodgers of Newark, Del. and Christy and Steve Paskevich of Wilmington; grandchildren, Gary Santora, and Dennis Smith and his wife Nicole; great-grandchildren, Saige Santora, Dennis, Dominick, and Danielle Smith; brother-in-law, Howard Defoe of Bear, Del.; and sister-in-law, Edith Defoe of Wilmington.
A native of Lewistown, she was a homemaker.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, at the McCrery Memorial Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Talleyville (Rt. 202 south of Silverside Road), Del., where friends may call after 1 p.m. Interment will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Delaware Humane Association, 701 A St., Wilmington, DE 19801 or the American Heart Association, 1501 Casho Mill Rd., Suite # 1, Newark, DE 19711.

Della E. Wian

LEWISTOWN — Della E. Wian, 78, a resident of Beverly Healthcare-William Penn, formerly of 443 S. Brown St., Lewistown, died at 6:22 a.m. Monday, Feb. 28, 2005 at the nursing home.
Born Sept. 7, 1926 in Burnham, she was a daughter of the late Joseph A. and Anna (Slopak) Heider. Her husband, Harry A. Wian, preceded her in death Dec. 18, 1982.
She is survived by: step-children, Lee Wian of Mechanicsburg and Mrs. Edward (Joan) Stuck of Camp Hill; sister, Margaret Heider of Lewistown; five step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by siblings, Michael, John and Stephen Heider, Kathryn Simanski, Mary Boyer and Victoria Rowe.
She was employed as a clerk at the Bon-Ton and later at Jamesway.
She was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 3, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 109 N. Dorcas St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Bernard Oniwee officiating. Interment will be in St. Marks Episcopal Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Beverly Healthcare-William Penn, 163 Summit Dr., Lewistown, PA 17044.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hoenstine Funeral Home, Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown.

Charles H. Horning Jr.

LEWISTOWN — Charles H. Horning Jr., 76, a resident of Ohesson Manor Nursing Home, formerly of Mifflintown and Church Hill, Reedsville, died at 11:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, at the Lewistown Hospital.
Born July 13, 1928 in Mifflintown, he was a son of the late Charles H. and Mary Pearl (Naylor) Horning Sr. His wife, Louise C. (Deeg) Horning, preceded him in death in 1983.
He is survived by: children, Deanna L. (Horning) Davis and husband Danny of McVeytown, Stanley E. Horning and wife Susan of Mifflintown, and Robert M. Horning and wife Deb of Erie; siblings, Robert Edward Horning of Sellersville, Keith A. Horning of Harrisburg, Elizabeth Kauffman of Mifflintown, and Sandy Henry of Dauphin; grandchildren, Jeffrey M. Davis, Patty and Edna Horning and Angie and Brad Horning; and great-granddaughter Abbey Davis.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by: siblings, Donald Horning, Alice Middleswarth, and Virginia Yohn.
He was a graduate of Juniata High School.
He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II, and received the American Area medal and the World War II Victory medal.
He was a supervisor in the tire fabric department of the American Viscose Corporation, retiring in 1984.
His graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at Juniata Memorial Park with the Rev. Jacob T. Traxler officiating and military honors given by VFW Post 7011. There will be no viewing, though the family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of service Wednesday at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Home, Inc., 200 N. Main St., Lewistown.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 26 N. Brown St., Lewistown, PA 17044.

Geraldine E. Singer

LEWISTOWN — Geraldine E. Singer, 98, a resident of Ohesson Manor and formerly of 511 W. Fifth St., Lewistown, died at 6:55 a.m., Tuesday, March 1, 2005 at the Lewistown Hospital.
Born Oct. 29, 1906 in Altoona, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Harriet (Osman) Miller. Her husband, Robert M. Singer, preceded her in death Nov. 28, 1961.
She is survived by: children, Donald R. Singer and wife Judy of Bellefonte, Mrs. Malcolm (Roberta) Whitsel of Lewistown; six grandchildren, two step grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.
She was a homemaker and member of the Lake Park United Methodist Church. She last attended Lewistown Christian and Missionary Alliance Church.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Christian’s Women’s Club, Lewistown
Her funeral service will be at noon Thursday, at the Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown with the Revs. John Looney and Jacob T. Traxler officiating. A private interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Altoona. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until time of service on Thursday, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Betty Ann Kline

MCCLURE - Betty Ann Kline, 84, of McClure, passed away at 11:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at Sunbury Community Hospital, where she had been a patient for the past seven days. She had been a resident of Manor Care, Sunbury, for the past seven months.
She was born March 3, 1920, in Wauwatosa, Wis., a daughter of the late Frederick A. and Daisy R. (Reese) Smith. In Cairo, Egypt, Aug. 23, 1945, she married Joe Henry Kline, who was serving in the Army during World War II. He is currently a resident of Manor Care, Sunbury.
Also surviving are: two sons , Arthur H. Kline, of Harrisburg, and Robert D. “Rob” Kline, of RR2 McClure; and three grandchildren, Laura, Tim and Carrie.
She was preceded in death by: a son, Peter R. Kline; and a sister, Suzanne S. Smith.
She graduated from Wauwatosa High School in 1939. She also attended Milwaukee State Teachers School for two years.
She retired in 1973 from the West Snyder Clinic after being a medical secretary for many years.
She served in the Women’s Army CorpS, during World War II.
She was a member of Mount Bethel United Church of Christ.
She enjoyed swimming and taught swimming lessons for over 25 years at the Veteran’s Memorial Pool. She also enjoyed gardening, ceramics, painting and completing crossword puzzles.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Mount Bethel United Church of Christ, McClure, by the Rev. Donald Wise.
Arrangements are being handled by Aurand Funeral Home 316 W. Market St. Beavertown.

A. Maxine Wos

MILLERSTOWN - A. Maxine Wos, 84, of 47 North Market Street, Millerstown passed away at 3:10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, 2005 at Perry Village Nursing Home, New Bloomfield, Pa., where she had been a resident since Feb. 7, 2003.
Born Nov. 19, 1920 in Mapleton Depot, she was a daughter of the late David Heefner and Anna Byrd Chaney Heefner. Her husband Joseph W. Wos, whom she married Aug. 14, 1943, preceded her in death March 18, 1994.
She is survived by nephew, James Page of Palisade, Colo.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by sister, Viola Ruth Page of Littleton, Colo.
She was a graduate of Millerstown High School. She graduated from Susquehanna University in 1942 and attended Columbia University. She began a teaching career at Millerstown High School where she taught business and commercial subjects. She also served as the girls basketball coach for several years.
A resident of Millerstown since 1929, her keen gift of memory for names and dates made her a historical depository of information which folks in the Millerstown area sought out from time to time.
She enjoyed working with arts and crafts and she liked to adorn her home with seasonal decorations, recognizing all holidays with her home/door decorations. She and her late husband Joe, took many young people under their wing, supporting them with their time and gestures of their friendship.
She was an avid Penn State football fan and rarely missed a game. She was also a staunch New York Yankee Fan.
Throughout her life she enjoyed the company of her dog Impy and her cat Buddy. She also enjoyed keeping track of the different species of birds that adorned her feeders and she was very enthusiastic about her flower garden.
She was a member of the Millerstown United Methodist Church. She was active in Millerstown community organizations, including the Civic Club, Card Club and the Millerstown Fire Company.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 8, at the Millerstown United Methodist Church with the Rev. Delores O. Strawser officiating. Burial will follow the service in the Millerstown Riverview Cemetery.
A fellowship will be held in the church following the burial.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3211 North Front Street, Suite 100, Harrisburg, Pa. 17110.
Arrangements are being handled by the Nickel Funeral Home, 3626 Shermans Valley Road, Loysville, Pa.

Howard E. Stine Jr.

HERSHEY - Howard E. Stine Jr., 72, of Hershey, died at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at his residence.
Born Feb. 8, 1933, in Mifflin, Juniata County, he was the son of the late Howard E. and Fay E. (Eshleman) Stine Sr. His wife of nearly 49 years, Sandra J. (Brannon) Stine, whom he married on April 7, 1956, survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by: a son, Steven H. Stine and his wife, Gloria, St. Louis, Mo; a daughter, Ellen M. Marschall and her husband, Mark Somers, Conn.; and three grandchildren, Amanda Marschall, Jared Marschall and Cory Stine.
He was a 1951 graduate of Juniata Joint High School, Mifflintown. In 1955 he graduated from Lehigh University with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, and in 1982 he attained his Master of Business Administration from Shippensburg University.
He was a United States Navy veteran.
He retired from Amp, Inc. in 1994 as an engineer, with 38 1/2 years of service.
He was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Hershey, where he sang in the church choir and served on the church council. He volunteered as a tax consultant for the elderly and Meals on Wheels of Hershey. He was a former little league baseball coach.
Memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday from his church, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 212 Cocoa Ave., Hershey, with Pastors Winfield Devonshire and Cindy Brommer officiating. Interment will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown.
There will be no viewing. However, family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until time of service, Saturday at his church.
Memorial contributions may be made to: The Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 212 Cocoa Ave., Hershey, PA 17033; or Pinnacle Health Hospice, 3705 Elmwood Drive, Harrisburg, PA 17110.

Mildred L. Zeiders
MIFFLINTOWN—Mildred L. Zeiders, 73, of Mifflintown RR 4 went to be with her Lord at 2:09 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at her home.
Born Sep. 28, 1930 in Burnham, she was a daughter of the late Harry E. and Lerrie C. (Leach) Kahley. Her husband, Lee A. Zeiders, whom she married May 25, 1963, survives.
Also surviving are two daughters , Mrs. Barry (Darlene) Hildebrand of McAlisterville RR2 and Mrs. Steve (Kim) Shearer of Port Royal RR 2; one sister, Betty Kitting of R.R. 3 Lewistown; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed braiding rugs, doing crafts, going shopping and gardening, especially working with flowers.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 28 at South Juniata Baptist Church, RR 1 Honey Grove with Pastor Dennis Thompson officiating. There will be no viewing.
The family will provide the flowers for the memorial service and asks that contributions be made to Hospice: The Bridge, 400 Highland Ave., Lewistown, PA 17044.

Martha Mercedes Ross
MCVEYTOWN — Martha Mercedes Ross, 88, of Sugar Valley Road, McVeytown died Tuesday, March 23, 2004 at the Lewistown Hospital.
Born March 10, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Franklin and Gertrude (Booher) Drake. Her husband, John W. “Bill” Ross, whom she married on July 8, 1936, preceded her in death on Jan. 29, 1990.
She is survived by a daughter, Jean Ryan, Lewistown; brothers Fern “Red” Drake and Earl Drake, both of Rockhill Furnace; two grandchildren, Victoria E. Heidel, McVeytown and Brenda J. Blessing, Orrstown; 6 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a great-grandson and the following siblings: Jenevieve Suders, Elmer Leroy Drake, Freda Krugh, Hazel Ingram and Mary Alesi.
Along with her husband, she owned and operated Bill’s Refuse Service and helped operate Bill’s Diner in the 1940’s and 1950’s.
She loved hunting and watching wildlife in her yard and had a deep appreciation for time spent with her family and friends.
Martha also enjoyed writing poetry.
Christmas and Easter were special holidays for her, especially in decorating.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mt. Union with Rev. Charles Beltz officiating. Interment will be in Haven Rest Memorial Park, R.D. 1, Shirleysburg.
Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to: American Cancer Society, R.D. 1, Highway 26, Huntingdon, PA 16652.

Mabel E. Walker
LEWISTOWN — Mabel E. Walker, 97, a resident of Beverly Healthcare-William Penn, formerly of Route 103, Granville, died at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at the nursing home.
Born June 12, 1906 in South Fork, she was a daughter of the late Samuel E. and Anna (Varner) Burke. Her husband, Stanford E. Walker, preceded her in death on March 5, 1969.
Surviving are: children June E. Dickson, Reedsville, Theda M. Stahl, Littlestown, James Walker, Reedsville and Robert Walker, Lewistown; ten grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by a son, Clyde E. Walker, three brothers , two sisters and a grandson.
She was employed at American Viscose Corp., retiring in 1969.
She was Protestant by faith.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown with Rev. Bernard Carpenter officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park Cemetery.
Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of service Friday at the funeral home.
