Arthur C. Heikes
DUNCANNON - Arthur C. Heikes Jr., 77, formerly of Mifflin and Camp Hill, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at Stonebridge Health and Rehab Center, Duncannon.
He was born in Mifflin, the son of the late Arthur C. and Beatrice E. (Saylor) Heikes Sr. His wife, Valeria M. (Miller) Heikes, survives.
Also surviving are: a daughter, Julie L. Corl, New Bloomfield; a son, Kevin J. Miller; two sisters , Sally Miller, Mifflin, and Irene Strawser, Lewistown; three brothers , Delbert Heikes, Cogan Station, Raymond Heikes, Mifflintown, and Harry Heikes, Shawville; six grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
He was a retired postal employee, Harrisburg, and a retirement counselor for the federal government.
He served with the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a member of the Perry Alliance Church, ShermansDale, and had previously attended Daniel’s-St. Thomas’ Church, Richfield.
His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Perry Alliance Church, 6861 Spring Road RT 34, ShermansDale, Pa. Interment will be in Daniel’s-St. Thomas’ Church Cemetery, Richfield.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service, Monday at the church.

Helen G. Lauver
MIFFLINTOWN — Helen G. Lauver, 92, of Locust Grove Retirement Village, and formerly of North Street, Mifflintown, died at 10:40 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005 at Locust Grove.
Born Dec. 29, 1912 in Mifflintown, she was a daughter of the late Mahlon E. and Jennie L. (Wilson) Guss. Her husband, John W. Lauver, preceded her in death April 19, 1977.
She is survived by: son, Ralph W. Lauver of Mifflintown; grandsons, Andrew S. Lauver and John “Chuck” Lauver, and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by sister Virginia Leas.
She had been a clerk in the Bureau of Vital Records, Harrisburg. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown and, at one time, had been active in the primary children’s department and sang in the church choir.
She was a member of Mifflin Chapter 260 Order of the Eastern Star for 62 years and served as Worthy Matron in 1952. She also was a member of the Rebekah Lodge. She enjoyed music.
Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Messiah Lutheran Church with the Rev. William Esborn officiating. Interment will be in Union Memorial Garden, Mifflintown.
Friends may call 7-9 p.m. this evening, at Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown. An Eastern Star memorial service will be conducted at 8:45 p.m. by the Mifflin Chapter. Friends may also call at 10 a.m. until time of service on Saturday, at Messiah Lutheran Church.

Harold Richard Hummel
BELLEVILLE — Harold Richard “Dick” Hummel, 80, a resident of Valley View Haven, Belleville and formerly of 317 Third St., Pleasant Acres, died at 7:50 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at the nursing home.
Born March 22, 1924 in Mifflin County, he was a son of the late John A. and Mary Jane (Gilbert) Hummel. His wife, Violet Hazel (Herrington) Hummel, whom he married Sept. 20, 1947, survives.
Also surviving are: children, Richard Lee Hummel and wife Jan of Winfield and Mrs. David R. (Patricia L.) Fultz of Lewistown; and four grandchildren.
He was the last of his immediate family having been preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters .
He was a 1942 graduate of Lewistown High School and a United States Army veteran of World War II.
He was a partner in the ownership of Howard C. Kline, Inc., (NAPA Auto Parts) retiring in 1988. He then worked for his son for eight years.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and superintendent of the Adult Sunday School Class. He sang in the choir and served on various church committees. He also was a member of Lewistown Lodge 203 F & AM, and the Harrisburg Consistory.
His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 28, at Grace United Methodist Church, 101 Logan St., Lewistown with the Revs. Charles Sprenkle and Ed Moore officiating. Interment will be in Mount Rock Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown.

Lt. Col. (Ret.) Ross B. Brode
REEDSVILLE - Lt. Col. Ross B. Brode, USAF Ret., 82, of 39 Honey Creek Lane, Reedsville, died at 3:38 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at Lewistown Hospital.
Born June 12, 1922, in Coalmont, Pa., he was a son of the late Dorsey Beegle and Luella Bertha (Laidig) Brode. His wife, Dolores A. (Hess) Brode, whom he married on Sept. 18, 1947, survives.
Also surviving are: children, Vonna B. Thomas and husband Lt. Col. (Ret.) Mark, Oviedo, Fla., Ross B. Brode II and wife Sharon, Reedsville, and Steve K. Brode and wife Amy, Cocoa, Fla.; a sister, Martha (Brode) Thomas, Bedford; and seven grandchildren, Capt. Mark Andrew Thomas, Lt. Hilary M. Thomas, Kristie R. Brode, Michael R. Brode, Alexandra B. Brode, John “Jack” Brode, and Benjamin L. Brode.
He was preceded in death by: three brothers , Homer, Orman and Donald Brode.
He was a 1940 graduate of Saxton Liberty High School and a 1949 graduate of Penn State University, receiving a bachelor’s degree in finance.
He served with the Air Force until his retirement in Oct., 1972. After retirement he was a Real Estate Agent in Kansas City, Mo. for three years before returning to the Mifflin County area.
He served with the Navy during World War II and with the Air Force during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War, receiving a Bronze Star, the Air Force Meritorious Service Metal and the Joint Service Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster.
He was a member of Theta Chi, a 32nd Degree Free & Accepted Mason, Scottish Rite., and an active member of the Burnham Lions Club. In retirement he was an avid hunter and fisherman.
His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Bohn Funeral Home, Reedsville, with the Rev. Howard D. Houtz officiating. Interment will be in Mount Rock Cemetery, Lewistown.

Richard R. ‘Dick’ Stuck
LEWISTOWN - Richard R. “Dick” Stuck, 63, of 724 S. Grand St. , Lewistown, died at 9:18 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, at the Lewistown Hospital Emergency Room.
Born Oct. 8, 1941, he was the son of the late Richard and Marie K. (Harshberger) Stuck. His wife, Linda Kay (Mitchell) Stuck, whom he married in 1961, survives.
Also surviving are: children, Mrs. Kevin (Kathy) Krepps, and Tommy Grose and wife Tereca, both of Lewistown; a sister, Mrs. Glen (Sharon) Sue Grassmyer, Lewistown; a nephew, Richard Habbershon, Lewistown; and four grandchildren, Kaylee J. Krepps and Thomas, Jermery and Crtstal Grose.
He was a truck mechanic for Roadway Express.
He served with the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he sang solos, the Brooklyn and Yeagertown fire companies, and Moose Lodge 143.
His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Kari Swigart officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park.

Phyllis E. Rupert
MCVEYTOWN - Phyllis E. Rupert, 80, of Little Brick Road, McVeytown, died at 8:10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, at Lewistown Hospital.
Born Jan. 27, 1925, in McVeytown, she was a daughter of the late William and Dorothy (Kimberly) Clark. Her husband, Harry Russell Rupert, preceded her in death on Sept. 2, 1997.
Surviving are: a son, Steven R. Rupert, Glendale, Ariz.; two grandsons, Shane S. Rupert and Shawn D. Rupert, both of Lewistown; and one great-granddaughter.
She was employed as a clerk at the McVeytown Post Office for 29 years, retiring in 1990.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. Jeanette Mater officiating. Interment will be in Mattawana Cemetery, McVeytown.

Mary C. Heiser
LEWISTOWN - Mary C. Heiser, 91, of 351 Terrace Blvd., Lewistown, died at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, at her residence.
Born Sept. 12, 1913, she was a daughter of the late William and Elsie Mae (Watts) Bruce. Her husband, Elmer Heiser, preceded her in death on Dec. 9, 1957.
Surviving are: a son, Richard Heiser, 351 Terrace Blvd, Lewistown.
She was the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by a sister.
She worked for 44 years in the beaming department of American Viscose.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, and a life member of Brooklyn and City fire companies.
Services are private and will be held and the convenience of the family.

Minda Soho Chevalier
MIFFLINTOWN — Minda Soho Chevalier, 99, of Brookline Manor, formerly of New York City, died at 1:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, 2005 at the Manor.
Born March 5, 1905 in Baltimore, she was a daughter of the late Aristo M. and Mary (Wimbrough) Soho.
She was preceded in death by two sisters , Maroula Wimbrough Smith in 1973 and Consuelo W. Bryan in 1995. She was the last of her immediate family.
She was an executive with Bell Telephone.
She lived most of her adult life in New York City. After she retired, she spent the summers in Licking Creek Valley, Juniata County. She enjoyed traveling and had been around the world several times.
Her service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Mifflintown with the Rev. Ronald Shupe officiating. Interment will be in the Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery. There will be no viewing.

Raymond ‘Nate’ Nathan Parkes
REEDSVILLE - Raymond “Nate” Nathan Parkes, 78, of Reedsville and formerly of Rixford, Pa., died at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at Nittany Medical Center, State College, with his family at his bedside.
Born March 4, 1926, in Philipsburg, he was a son of the late Joseph L. and Nellie (Morgan) Parkes. His beloved wife, Connie E. (Jewart) Parkes, whom he was married to for 48 years, survives.
Also surviving are: six sons , Nathan and wife Heidi, Alta Vista, Va., Randall and partner Kristina, Concord, N.C., Jeffrey and wife Debbie, Mableton, Ga., David and wife Lori, Dawsonville, Ga., Raymond, Concord, and Michael and wife Marion, Smyrna, Ga.; three daughters , Cheryl Perkins and husband Bill, St. Louis, Mo., Patricia and partner Steve, Bend, Ore., and Alice Grillo and husband Steve, Acworth, Ga.; a sister, Nelda (Parkes) Hale and husband Gilbert, Philipsburg; a niece, Candis Miller; several cherished nieces and nephews; 24 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by: three brothers , Alvin, David and Edward; and three sisters , Caroline, Elsie and Esther.
He retired in 1988 from Dresser Manufacturing, Bradford, Pa., after 38 years of service.
He served with the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Eldred, Pa., and Masonic Temple Northern Star Lodge 555, Duke Center, Pa.
His memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Reedsville United Methodist Church, with Pastor Richard J. Bender officiating. Immediately following the service, a celebration of life will be held at the Camelot Country Restaurant, Reedsville. There will be no public viewing.

Robert W. Naylor
MCALISTERVILLE — Robert L. Naylor Sr., 84, of McAlisterville and a resident of Perry Village, New Bloomfield since Sept. 14, 2004, died at 4:20 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005 at the Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill.
Born Oct. 24, 1920 in Fayette Township, Juniata County, a son of the late Elmer G. and Sadie E. (Varner) Naylor. His wife of 60 years, Ruth I. (Spade) Naylor, whom he married on July 18, 1943, preceded him in death on Aug. 15, 2003.
He is survived by: his children, Keith D. Naylor and wife Marcia, Robert L. Naylor Jr. and wife Betty Lou, Ruth Ann Haas and husband Lester, all of R.R. 2 McAlisterville; seven siblings, Charlotte Felmey, Peoria, Ill., Mae Reigle, Paxtonville, Grace Slagle, Millerstown, Ray Naylor, Penn Lutheran Nursing Home, Selinsgrove, Min Snyder, Middleburg, Mary Shuey, Lewistown, Beulah Powell, Selinsgrove, six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters .
He retired in 1983 from PennDOT, Mifflintown.
He was a member of the McAlisterville United Methodist Church, McAlisterville, who loved taking care of farm animals and farming his truck patch.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, 2005 from the McAlisterville Chapel of the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville with Pastor Joy Hulslander officiating. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, McAlisterville.
There will be no public viewing.
