Samuel E. Callipare

HONEY GROVE — Samuel E. Callipare, 53, of RR 1 Honey Grove, died Thursday, April 27, 2006, at Harrisburg Hospital.

Born August 19, 1952 in Natrona Heights, he was a son of Samuel Callipare of Apollo and the late Nancy (Rimmel) Callipare. His wife, Cynthia F. (Smith) Callipare, whom he married Nov. 3, 1973, survives.

Also surviving are two daughters , Dr. Amanda Jo Vaglia and husband Dr. Christopher Vaglia, Clymer, and Amy L. Callipare, Raleigh N.C.; two sisters , Angeline Kazmeraski, Pittsburgh, and Linda Grimm of Apollo; two brothers , Steven Callipare, Vandergrift, and Frank Callipare, Apollo; and four grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jonah, Xavier and Alekzander Vaglia.

He was a USDA Food and Safety inspector. He was a member of St. Jude’s Catholic Church, Mifflintown, a 4th degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, an honorary life member of the Juniata Co. Sportsmen’s Association, a Hunter-Trapper Education instructor, a life member of the NRA and a member of Ducks Unlimited. He enjoyed hunting and was an avid turkey hunter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, RR 4, Mifflintown, and also at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at St. James Catholic Church, Apollo. Interment will be in St. Gertrude’s Church Cemetery, Vandergrift.

There will be a viewing on Sunday at Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. with a scripture service at 8:30 p.m. There also will be a viewing on Monday at the Curran-Shaffer Funeral Home, 100 Owens View Ave., Apollo, from 4 to 8 p.m. There will be no viewing at either church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude’s Church Building Fund, PO Box 187, Mifflintown, PA 17059.

Mary N. (Specht) Hintz

LEWISTOWN — Mary N. (Specht) Hintz, 63, died at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 27, 2006, at Beverly Healthcare William Penn Nursing Home.

Born April 12, 1943, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Irvin J. and Lottie (Laird) Ferguson. Her husband, Terry Hintz, of 204 Chestnut St., Lewistown, survives, as does her first husband, John Specht, also of Lewistown.

Also surviving are her children, Mrs. Joseph (Hope) Lewis, Lewistown, Mrs. Steve (Charity) Dawson, Michigan, Faith Kinslow, Randall Specht, Terry Specht, and Scott Specht, all of Lewistown; Brian Laird, whom she raised, Lewistown; her brother, George Ferguson, Paintersville; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a stepson, Steve Specht, in 1992; a stillborn son, Harry Specht; a half-sister, Pansy Claysbaugh; and a son-in-law, David Kinslow.

She managed Fergie’s Restaurant and cooked at various other restaurants, and she also worked at Fisher’s Electronics.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 1, 2006, at the Barr Funeral Home, Inc., 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Ralph Wilson officiating. Interment will be in Paintersville CMA Cemetery, Back Maitland Road, Lewistown.

A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 30, 2006, at the funeral home.

Guy D. Walter

McCLURE — Guy D. Walter, 62, of McClure, passed away at his home at 8:45 a.m., April 28, 2006, after a brief illness.

He was born March 2, 1944, in Bainbridge, a son of the late Clark and Ruth Walter. His wife, Janet G. Kline, whom he married Aug. 17, 1963, survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Brett D. and wife Beth E. Walter, McClure; and four grandchildren, Nathan Walter, Andrew Arnold, Debbie Arnold and Beau Walter.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, McClure.

In 2003, he retired from Wal-Mart, Lewistown, after 5 and a half years in the lawn and garden department. Prior to that he had worked for the McClure Municipal Authority for several years. From 1966 to 1985, he owned and operated Guy Walter’s Excavating Service. For many years he raised Christmas Trees.

He graduated from Middleburg High School in 1962.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1965, serving in France, Germany and Arizona.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 942, McClure, Veteran of Foreign Wars, Post 5640, Paxtonville, and the West End Sportsman’s Club, McClure, where he served as president and enjoyed target shooting. Earlier in life, he served as the Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 408, McClure. He enjoyed hunting, boating, fishing, camping and his two dogs, Dutch and Star.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, in the Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Beth Ann Stone officiating. Interment will be in the McClure Union Cemetery, where graveside military services will be provided by American Legion Post 942, McClure.

Friends may call at the Aurand Funeral Home Sunday, 316 W. Market St., Beavertown, from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday, and the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society, 1948 E. Third St., Williamsport, PA 17701.

Charlotte A. Van Ormer

McALISTERVILLE — Charlotte A. Van Ormer, 99, of Brookline Manor, R.R. 1, Mifflintown, and formerly of R.R. 1, McAlisterville, died at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, April 27, 2006 at the manor.

Born May 24, 1906, in Walker Township, Juniata Co., she was the daughter of the late Martin M. and Bertha E. (Kauffman) Kauffman. Her husband, Claude R. Van Ormer, preceded her in death on December 27, 1985.

She is survived by one son, C. Donald Van Ormer, Bennett, CO.; one sister, Isabel Mohlmann, New Port Ritchy, Fla.; one brother, Homer L. Kauffman, McAlisterville; one granddaughter, Connie Saylor; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers , C. Roscoe Kauffman and Martin L. “Skip” Kauffman; and two sisters , Pauline Hart and Ruth Keiser.

She was a member of the East Salem United Methodist Church, East Salem, and the Juniata County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees.

She was a graduate of Fayette High School, McAlisterville, and the Shippensburg Normal School, where she had the recognition of being the oldest living alumni.

She began her forty-year teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse, having taught at various schools throughout Central Pennsylvania . She retired from the Juniata County School District as an elementary school teacher at Fayette Elementary School in McAlisterville.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 2, 2006, from the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, with the Rev. Donald Walters officiating. Interment will follow in the East Salem Cemetery, East Salem.

A viewing will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions in Mrs. Van Ormer’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 26 North Brown Street, Lewistown, PA 17044.

Helen A. (Miller) Woods

LEWISTOWN — Helen A. (Miller) Woods, 90, a resident of Beverly Healthcare-William Penn Nursing Home and formerly of New Lancaster Valley Road, Milroy, died 12:15 p.m. Thursday, April 27, 2006, at the nursing home.

Born Feb. 23, 1916, in Milroy, she was a daughter of the late James W. and Maude L. (Fultz) Miller. Her husband, Luther W. Woods, preceded her in death in 1976.

Surviving is a daughter-in-law, Julia S. Woods, of Dry Valley Road and a sister, Genevieve Murphy, of Boiling Springs. Also surviving is a grandson, Russell W. Woods and two great-granddaughters.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Clair H. Woods, a grandson and a great-grandson.

She was a homemaker.

Graveside services will be private at the convenience of the family under the direction of Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown.

Kenneth R. Appleby Sr.

DUNCANSVILLE — Kenneth R. Appleby Sr., 62, of Duncansville, died unexpectedly Wednesday, April 26, 2006, at ARHS Bon Secours Campus. He was born July 13, 1943, in Lewistown, the son of the late Wayne E. and Naomi Ellen (Guss) Appleby.

Ken retired as a produce manager from Weis Markets with 40 years of service. He was a 1962 graduate of Lewistown High School. He enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing. Ken was a member of the Allegheny Club, Heidelberg Country Club, Duncansville V.F.W., Bavarian Aide Society, Juniata Lodge No. 282, F&AM, and the Jaffa Shrine, where he was a member of the Oriental Band.

Surviving is a daughter, Debbie Shields and husband Chuck, of Altoona; son Richard Appleby Jr. and wife Jennifer, of North Carolina; four grandchildren, Emily Shields, Mark Shields, Jon Appleby, Brian Appleby and a brother, Wayne E. Appleby Jr. and wife Elva, of Elyria Ohio. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 28, 2006, at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home Inc., 2309 Broad Avenue, Altoona (www.smithfuneralcenter.com). A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 29, 2006, at the funeral home, officiated by Father James Crookston. Committal will be held at Calvary Cemetery.

In remembrance of Kenneth R. Appleby Sr., those who wish may make contributions to the Central PA Humane Society, 1837 E. Pleasant Valley Blvd., Altoona, PA 16602.

Samuel L. Kauffman

BELLEVILLE — Samuel L. Kauffman, 77, beloved husband, Father and papa, of 425 S. Walnut St., Belleville, died at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, 2006, at his home.

Born May 19, 1928, in Belleville, he was a son of the late Samuel F. and Katie (Zook) Kauffman. His wife, Mary (Yoder) Kauffman, whom he married Nov. 4, 1950, survives.

Also surviving are his children, Vernon Kauffman and wife Sharon, of Leola, Arlene Kauffman and husband Timothy, of Lewistown, Verda Shirk and husband Dale, of Terre Hill, Samuel K. Kauffman and wife Wendy, of Belleville, Regina Cabezas and husband Roberto, of Lancaster; 19 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and sisters , Turie Alwine and husband Clarence; and Katie Sharp, both of Belleville.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Joseph Samuel Kauffman and siblings, Lizzie Mae Zook, John Zook Kuaffman, Effie C. Peachey, Kore E. Kauffman and Jesse J. Kauffman.

He was a dairy farmer, retiring in 1976 and worked at A.J. Peachey in the Meat Department for 20 years and Kauffman Farm Supply for 10 years.

He was a member of Allensville Mennonite Church, Allensville where he had served as an Elder for 14 years, Superintendent of Winter Bible School, served as Superintendent of the Sunday School and was a teacher and a member of the Big Valley Men’s Chorus.

His funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Allensville Mennonite Church, Allensville. A viewing will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Baggus Funeral Home, 3813 W. Main St., Belleville, with the Pastors Rod Lehman and Eli Beachy officiating. Interment will be in Locust Grove Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to Sun Home Hospice, 61 Duke St., PO Box 232, Northumberland, PA 17857, or Allensville Mennonite Church, PO Box 35, Allensville, PA 17002.

Arrangements are under the direction of Baggus Funeral Home, Belleville, PA 17004.

Veda Matilda Watters

GRANVILLE — Veda Matilda Watters, 92, a resident of the Malta Home, Granville, and formerly of 80 Logan St., Lewistown, died at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, April 27, 2006, at the nursing home.

Born March 31, 1914, in Burnham, she was a daughter of the late John A. and Florence (Ritter) Beers. Her husband, Charles M. Watters, preceded her in death Aug. 15, 1956.

Surviving is a daughter, Mrs. Earl R. (Shirley) Jordan Jr., 46 Elm Drive, Lewistown. Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Marie Smith, of Lewistown, and grandsons; Douglas Jordan, of Miami, Fla., and David Jordan, of 46 Elm Drive, Lewistown.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters .

She was employed as a cook at F.W. Black Hospital and retired from Lewistown Hospital in 1979.

She attended Grace United Methodist Church and was a member of Women of the Moose No. 212, Lewistown.

Her funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, May 1, 2006, at Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., with the Rev. L. Ed Moore Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Mattawana Cemetery, McVeytown.

Her family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. Monday until time of service at the funeral home.

Percy L. Speece

McALISTERVILLE — Percy L. Speece, 97, of McAlisterville, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006, at 4:30 p.m., at the Meda Nipple Convalescent Home, RR 1, Thompsontown.

Born on Sept. 5, 1908, in Monroe Twp., Juniata Co., he was the son of the late Cloyd A. and Nora Elizabeth (Landis) Speece. His wife, Mabel (Reynolds) Speece, whom he married on Dec. 7, 1928, preceded him in death on Jan. 1, 1994.

He is survived by his children, Jean Hoffman, Brookline Manor, RR 1, Mifflintown, Donald L. Speece, RR 2, Mifflintown, David C. Speece, and his wife, Lucille, Robesonia, Gale D. Speece, and his wife, Doris, RD 1, Wernersville, Lois Leach, and her husband, Darwin, RR 1, Thompsontown; 12 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and many great-great-grandchildren.

He was the last of his immediate family having been preceded in death by two sisters , Arline V. Speece, Anna Mae Guyer, and one brother, William D. Speece.

He was a member of the Pine Grove United Methodist Church, RR 1, Mifflintown.

He retired in 1970, with 30 years of service, from the Wernersville State Hospital, and he also worked with his Father in the masonry trade.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 29, 2006, from Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, with the Revs. Ronald E. Landis and Jack Landis officiating. Interment will follow in the Lost Creek Mennonite Cemetery, Oakland Mills.

Viewing will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of the service, Saturday, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Speece’s memory to the Pine Grove United Methodist Church, RR 1, Box 792, Mifflintown, PA 17059.

Stanley N. Van Gorden Jr.

LEWISTOWN — Stanley N. Van Gorden Jr., 58, of 110 S. Spruce St., Lewistown, died 9:14 a.m. Tuesday, April 25, 2006, in the Emergency Room of Lewistown Hospital.

Born Jan. 9, 1948, in Bethlehem, he was a son of the late Stanley N. and Catherine (Reiff) Van Gorden Sr. His wife, Maryann (Wenghofer) Van Gorden, whom he married Aug. 7, 1992, survives.

Also surviving are a son, daughter, three brothers and two grandchildren.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam era.

Early in life he worked for a gas company in the Lehigh Valley area and has been disabled since 1983.

He was Lutheran by faith.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family under the direction of Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown.
