J. Ernest Wagner
TUSSEYVILLE - J. Ernest Wagner, 92, a native of Tusseyville, Potter Twp., died in his sleep early on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, in Lock Haven.

Born Nov. 9, 1910, he was a son of Maud Sweeney Gunsallus Wagner and Emory Clayton Wagner, a farmer and carpenter. The Wagner family was part of the 18th century immigration of Germans from the Palatinate to Pennsylvania , arriving in the state in 1750 and moving to Centre County in 1810, after settling for a time in Berks County.

"My background is farm and village," he once wrote on an application for a teaching position. For most of his life he was a teacher and a school principal after leaving his parents' farm in 1928 to attend what was then Lock Haven Teachers College. He earned a two-year certificate that qualified him to teach in rural areas, and from 1930-38 held classes in Coyler, Earlystown, Tusseyville, Plum Grove and Tussysink, all in Potter Township.

He spent summers furthering his own education and eventually earned a four-year certificate, after which he taught elementary school in Centre Hall. In the 1950s, he earned a principal's certificate and an M.A. degree in English literature from Penn State.

The later part of his career was spent as the principal of Lincoln Elementary School in Foster Township and as a teacher of English at Floyd C. Fretz Middle School, both in Bradford, McKean County.

He was called to teaching and the study of literature, which included a large book, by the example of a close friend and cousin, Harvey Wagner Flink, a poet remembered chiefly for his book of verse about Penns Valley and the Seven Mountains area, A Mellow Horn (1934).

As a boy, he was thought to be disposed to illness. On the advice of neighbors, he was "powwowed" over by a practitioner of the pennsylvania Dutch healing arts and was given the nickname "Ben" to inspire him to be more robust. The nickname stuck, at least in Centre County. His own explanation for his longevity was his deep faith and his life-long practice of hiking and nature study. He was an enthusiastic naturalist who knew the name of most flowers, birds, and trees in central and northern Pennsylvania and was active for much of his life as a Boy Scout leader.

It was with his scout troop in the 1940s that he organized the building of a large stone structure on the south slope of Nittany Mountain, overlooking Centre Hall, that local residents came to call "Benny's Fort." Along with a group of three large rock towers he had erected with his own hands farther east along the same slope, it was the subject of an article in The Centre Democrat in the 1960s in which the author speculated that the stonework represented the ruins of a lost civilization of local Native Americans. Delighted, he remained silent through the appearance of several weekly editions before correcting the record.

In matters of faith, he was in his adult years a follower of the Methodist discipline, though he had been raised as an Albright Evangelical and had among his forebears several pastors in the Old German Reformed Church. Like his Father and grandfather, he was a member of the Progress Grange in Centre Hall and a supporter of the Democratic Party.

On April 20, 1938, he married Florence Virginia Brooks of Centre Hall, who preceded him in death in 1980. On Aug. 23, 1981, he remarried and moved to Madisonburg with Mabel Hagen Myers, who survives him.

Also surviving are: three sons , Larry Wagner, Redwood City, CA, David Wagner, Tempe, AZ, and Ted Wagner, Port Matilda; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church, 127 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Centre Hall
