Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Norma Jean Solomon
NEW BERLIN - Norma Jean Solomon, 62, of New Berlin, died late Sunday evening April 6, 2003, at her home.

Born Oct. 22, 1940, in RR1 Middleburg, she was a daughter of the late Harry M. and Hattie M. (Walters) Hackenberg. Her husband, Edward H. Solomon, whom she married June 26, 1993, survives.

Also surviving are: two daughters and two sons -in-law, Kathy and Daryl McCreery, Altoona, and Christina and Edwin Lash, Lewistown; two sons , David Tyson, Harrisburg and Scott Tyson and wife Sharon, Mifflinburg; 4 step children, Edward Solomon and wife Joan, Middleburg, Michael Solomon and companion, Brenda Gower, Kratzerville, Lynn Solomon, Mifflinburg, and Vivian Solds and husband, Ron, McClure; six sisters ; and six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and five step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother.

She was employed at Wood Mode, Kreamer, until disability forced retirement.

She was a member of Mifflinburg Assembly of God Church, and active in Women's AGlow.

Her funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Mifflinburg Assembly of God Church, with Rev. Keith A. Bingman officiating. Interment will be in New Berlin Cemetery.

There will no viewing. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the service time Thursday at the church.

Virginia A. Spangler
BELLEVILLE - Virginia A. Spangler, 45, of 48 Susan Drive, Belleville, died at 1 a.m. Friday, May 23, 2003, at her home.

Born Aug. 18, 1957, in Lancaster, she was a daughter of Gordon and Nellie (Lewis) Thomas of Buckhannon, WV. Her husband, Keith A. Spangler, whom she married on June 19, 1982, survives.

Also surviving are two children, Chelsey M. Spangler and Alex J. Spangler, both at home; and three siblings, Glenn Thomas of Towanda, Belinda Timmins of Mountville and Mrs. Gale (Linda) Dean of Duck, NC.

She was a homemaker and previously worked at Fairmont Products, Belleville.

She served as a Girl Scout leader.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Donald E. Baggus Funeral Home, 3813 W. Main St., Belleville, with Rev. Samuel G. Strohm officiating. Interment will be in Lind Memorial Cemetery.

Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 2040 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17110.

Gary Lee Specht
REEDSVILLE - Gary Lee Specht, 64, of 322 W. Railroad St., Reedsville, died at 6 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at his residence.

Born Oct. 16, 1938, in Reedsville, he was a son of the late John William and Hazel (Ruby) Specht Sr.

Surviving are: brothers and sisters , Mary Little, and John W. Specht, both of Lewistown, Donald E. Specht, Reedsville, and Vivian Spade, Richfield.

He was preceded in death by a brother, James H. Specht Sr., and a sister, Minnie L. Specht.

His memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Bohn Funeral Home, Reedsville with Rev. Guy R. Hockenberry officiating. Private interment will be in Church Hill Cemetery, Reedsville.

There will be no public viewing, however, family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Olive M. 'Sissy' Specht
LEWISTOWN - Olive M. Specht (Sissy Summers), 68, of 13 E. Chestnut Street Ext., Lewistown, died at 8 p.m. Friday, March7, 2003, at home.

Born Sept. 15, 1934, in Burnham, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Zelda (Brown) Summers. Her husband, Robert E. Specht, survives.

Also surviving are: a son, Larry Specht and wife Sally, Elizabethtown; two daughters , Debby Wagner and husband Jim, Mifflintown, and Sally Gerber and husband Gene, Lewistown; a sister, Betty Jones, Milroy; a brother, James Summers, Texas ; five granddaughters, one grandson, and one great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Jr., and two sisters , Lucille Brownwell and Harriet McLucas.

She was a devoted, caring wife and mother . She had many friends throughout the area and in the deaf community. She was one of Jehovah's Witnesses and a member of the Mifflintown Kingdom Hall.

Arrangements will be private.

George A. Speece
MIFFLINTOWN - George A. Speece, 93, of Pine Creek Personal Care, Mifflintown, died at 3:50 p.m. Friday, June 27, 2003, at Ohesson Manor, Lewistown.

Born Oct. 6, 1909, in Thompsontown, he was a son of the late T. Ray and Mary V. (Shaffer) Speece. His wife, Lois I. (Buckel) Speece, whom he married in 1949, survives.

Also surviving are: sisters , Mary Poet, Carlisle and Evelyn Kennedy, Lewistown.

He was an electrician with Lewistown Vending Company for 35 years, retiring in 1974.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served in the Pacific Theatre in World War II.

A private service will be held at the convenience of the family, with a private interment at Blair Memorial Cemetery, Bellwood. There will be no public viewing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown is in charge of the arrangements.

Arlene J. Spicher
BELLEVILLE - Arlene J. Spicher, 52, of 85 S. Kishacoquillas St., Belleville, died at 1:37 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2003, at Lewistown Hospital's Emergency Room.

Born Dec. 18, 1950, in Belleville, she was the daughter of the late Samuel C. and Arie (Byler) Yoder. Her husband, David J. Spicher, whom she married on June 6, 1974, survives at home.

Also surviving are four children, Marlin and wife Mary Ann Spicher, Belleville, Grace and husband Eugene Beachy, Delta, CO, John W. Spicher, Belleville, and David Spicher Jr., Belleville; 11 brothers and sisters , Anna and husband Sollie Hostetler, Belleville, Mary Kurtz, Belleville, Esther Peachey, Belleville, Elsie and husband Benjamin Yoder, Millersburg, Samuel and wife Ruth Yoder, Belleville, Beulah and husband John Kauffman, Reedsville, David W. and wife Sara Yoder, McVeytown, Francis and husband Leon Kanagy, Marion, Marlin and wife Karen Yoder, Buhler, KS, Raymond Yoder, Reedsville, and John and wife Joyce Yoder, Buhler, KS; and two grandsons.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Arlin David Spicher, and two brothers -in-law, John Kurtz and Simon Peachey.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Pleasant View Amish Mennonite Church, Belleville.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Pleasant View Amish Mennonite Church, Green Lane, Belleville, with Bishop David J. Peachey and ministers Daniel Miller, David J. Peachey and Jesse Lee Spicher officiating. Interment will be in Locust Grove Cemetery.

Family will receive friends 2-4:30 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Donald E. Baggus Funeral Home, 3813 W. Main St., Belleville.

Larry Martin Spigelmyer
LAS VEGAS, NV - Larry Martin Spigelmyer, 70, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at his residence.

Born Sept. 12, 1932, in Pennsylvania , he resided in Las Vegas for 44 years.

Surviving are: his mother , Maye; his wife, Mary Jo; a son, Scott; a daughter Sharon; two brothers , Jerry and Neil; a sister, Gwen Knapp; and three grandchildren.

He was a retired teacher and U.S. Army veteran.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 28 at Desert Springs Methodist Church.

Helen Irene 'Me-Maw' Spriggle
MILLERSTOWN - Helen Irene 'Me-Maw' Spriggle, 83, a former resident of RR2 Millerstown, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, in the Zendt Home, Richfield, where she resided since March 19, 1998.

Her funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at George P. Garman Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant Mills. Interment will be in Richfield Union Cemetery.

A viewing will be from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Thomas Sprout Sr.
LEWISTOWN &endash; Thomas Sprout Sr., 76, of 34 Catherine St., Lewistown, died at 4:30 p.m. Saturday Jan. 18, 2003, at his residence.

Born Sept. 14, 1926, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late Samuel C. and Cora (Osborne) Sprout. His wife, Helen (Beatty) Sprout, whom he married Jan. 3, 1948, survives.

Also surviving are: two children, Mrs. Douglas (Donna) Knepp, Lancaster, and Thomas "Tink" and wife Kimberly Sprout, Jr., 2 Richmond Court; two sisters and a brother, Betty Coulter, 143 Pannebaker Ave., John E. Sprout, Belleville, and Arlene Sprout, West Palm Beach Garden, FL; a grandson and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers , a sister and three step-brothers .

Early in life he worked for American Viscose Corp., then he was a shipper for Mexico Forge for 14 years, retiring in 1986.

He was U.S. Army Veteran of World War II.

He was a member of Grove United Methodist Church and the Mens Victory Class Sunday School. He was a life member of City Hook and Ladder Fire Company.

His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hoenstine Funeral Home, Inc., 75 Logan St., with Rev. D. Gregory Lake officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park. military graveside services will be by VFW Post 7011.

There will be no viewing, however, family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Carl E. Stake
PORT ROYAL - Carl E. Stake, 77, of 507 Milford St., Port Royal, died at 5:54 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Lewistown Hospital.

Born Dec. 30, 1925, in Milford Township, Juniata County, he was a son of the late John E. and Helen (Goodman) Stake. His wife, Florane M. (Stimeling) Stake, died Oct. 6, 2002.

Surviving are: two daughters , Mrs. Richard (Loretta) Allen, Thompsontown, and Sonja C. Baker, Port Royal; two grandchildren, one step-grandchild and two step-great-grandchildren.

He was the last of his immediate family.

He was a retired employee of the PA Dept. of Transportation, Mifflintown, with 25 years of service. He was known for his knowledge of local Port Royal history and enjoyed attending public sales and yard sales. He was also a former Fire Policeman at the Port Royal Speedway.

His funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal, with Pastor Kenneth R. Kitzmiller officiating. Interment will be in New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Paul J. Stayrook
LEWISTOWN - Paul J. Stayrook, 70, of 75 Old 103 Road, Lewistown, died at 6:41 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at the Lewistown Hospital E.R.

Born Aug. 26, 1932, in Bratton Twp., he was a son of the late Noah E. and Margaret (Kauffman) Stayrook. His former wife, Caroline R. Stayrook of Mt. Union, survives.

Also surviving are: four children, Brenda M. Stayrook, RD2 Lewistown, Mrs. Andrew (Diane) Crouse, RD1 Mt. Union, Steven D. Stayrook, RD1 McVeytown, and Dan E. Stayrook, RD2 Lewistown; a brother, David C. Stayrook, RD2 Lewistown; a sister, Mrs. Donald (Anna Mary) Helm, RD1 Millerstown; and three grandchildren, Adam Crouse, Miranda Crouse, and Devin Crouse.

He was preceded in death by a brother, William G. Stayrook and three infant sisters .

He was a retired truck driver.

He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Brooklyn Fire Company.

His funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at David R. Harshbarger Funeral Home, McVeytown with Rev. Donald E. Peters Jr. officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be sent to: McVeytown Ambulance Company, McVeytown, PA 17051.

William M. Steele Sr.
LEWISTOWN - William M. Steele, Sr., 81, of 1 Steele Drive, Lewistown, died at 7:17 a.m. Thursday, May 15, 2003, at Hershey Medical Center.

Born Dec. 23, 1921, in Milroy, he was a son of the late George S. and Anna Mary (Peters) Steele. His wife, Jeanne (Wagner) Steele, whom he married Aug. 19, 1951, survives.

Also surviving are: six children, Mark S. Steele, Burnham, Valerie Metzgar, Virginia, William M. Steele, Jr., and Julie Steele, both of Lewistown, Mrs. David (Jyl) Hayes, Reedsville, and George S. Steele, Lewistown; a sister, Nell Deamer, Lewistown; 11 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by a brother.

He was a Superintendent in the Electrical Division of Standard Steel, retiring Nov. 30, 1986, after 45 years of service.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Air Force.

He was a Methodist by faith. He graduated from Milroy High School.

His funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham. Interment will be in Mt. Rock Cemetery with graveside military services conducted by VFW Post 7011, Lewistown.

Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
