Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Eugene M. Musser
LEWISTOWN - Eugene M. Musser, 95, formerly of Lewistown, died at 5:59 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at Valley View Haven, Belleville.

Born April 15, 1908, in Yeagertown, he was a son of the late George and Mayme (Mensch) Musser. His wife, Naomi F. "Bobbie" Musser, died Nov. 1996.

He was preceded in death by two brothers , William Musser and Donald Musser.

He owned and operated Correct Footwear for 35 years, retiring in 1987.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Lewistown and the Elks #663, Lewistown.

His funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Barr Funeral Home, Inc., 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with Rev. LeRoy Reitz officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to: St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 120 N. Main St., Lewistown, PA 17044.

Mary M. Musser
LEWISTOWN - Mary M. Musser, 76, formerly of Lewistown, died at 7:50 p.m. Monday, March 10, 2003, at University Park Nursing Home, State College.

Born Oct. 31, 1926, in Burnham, she was a daughter of the late George F. and Susie E. (Price) Freed. Her husband, George Musser, died 1979.

Surviving are: three children, Steven Hetrick, Reedsville, Robert Hetrick, Lewistown, and Faith Musser, Lewistown; two sisters , Naomi Narehood, Belleville, and Esther Freed, Lewistown; two half-sisters , Lillian M. Duncan, Washington , and Helen Mae Hoover, York; three grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers .

She attended CMA Church, Reedsville.

Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with Pastor Raymond Reeves officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. Thursday until the hour of the service at the funeral home.

Dorothy K. Myers
REEDSVILLE - Dorothy K. Myers, 89, a resident of Perry Village, New Bloomfield, formerly of Outlook Pointe, Reedsville, died at 7:15 p.m. Monday, July 28, 2003, at the nursing home.

Born Oct. 8, 1913, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Burt T. Sr., and Anna V. (Coles) Kitting. Her husband, Robert E. Myers, died Dec. 27, 2002.

Surviving are: two children, Burt E. Myers, 303 Licking St., Box E., Mifflin and Patricia Wagner, 508 W. Fourth St., Lewistown; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by a brother and two sisters .

She was a homemaker. She was a member of Westminster United Presbyterian Church and Women of the Westminster United Presbyterian Church.

A private graveside service will be in Lind Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Mark Brower officiating. There will be no viewing.

Memorials may be sent to: Westminster United Presbyterian Church repair fund, 208 Lemon St., Mifflintown, PA 17059.

Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown is in charge of arrangements.

Esther R. Myers
LEWISTOWN - Esther R. Myers, 95, a resident of Beverly Healthcare/William Penn, formerly of 4 Parkway Court, South Hills, died at 8:04 p.m. Friday, March 14, 2003, at Lewistown Hospital.

Born March 30, 1907, in Mifflin County, she was a daughter of the late William Fern and Blanche (Carpenter) Sager. Her husband, Harry D. Myers, Sr., died Jan. 2, 1971.

Surviving are: a son, Harry D. Myers, Jr., 4 Stoneroad Court, Lewistown; a sister, Anna Poorman, Outlook Pointe Commons; a brother, Merrill K. Sager, State College; four grandchildren, Carol Hockenberry, Lewistown, Harry D. Myers, III, Mechanicsburg, Debra Lipaj, Sagamore Hills, OH, and Jeffrey Myers, Thompsontown; 9 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, William F. Sager, and a sister, Irene Brouse.

She was a sales clerk at Danks Dept. Store, for 20 years.

She was a member of Grove Memorial United Methodist Church and the Live Wire Sunday School Class.

Her funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today at Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, Inc., 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, with Pastor D. Gregory Lake officiating. Interment will be in St. Mark's Cemetery.

Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of the service today at the funeral home.

Bertha P. 'Bert' Nace
Bertha P. "Bert" Nace, 94, formerly of Mifflintown, died at 3:50 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, 2003, at Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin.

Born June 7, 1909, in Licking Creek Valley, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Julia (Stoner) Powley. Her husband, Boyd Nace, died on Feb. 21, 1976.

She is survived by two children, Alice McClure, Mifflintown RR2 and Dennis B. Nace Sr., Mifflintown; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Robinson.

She and her husband operated Nace Fruit Farm.

She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, was active in the Mifflintown Senior Citizens Center, and was a former member of the Mifflintown Hose Co. Ladies Auxiliary.

Her funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Messiah Lutheran Church, with Rev. Anna Ritter officiating. Interment will be in the West-minster Presbyterian Cemetery.

Friends may call for one hour prior to the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Messiah Lutheran Church, 3 S. Third St., Mifflintown, PA 17059.

Arrangements are in the care of Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown.

J. David Nafzinger
EASTON - J. David Nafzinger, 85, of Clearwater, FL, and formerly of Easton, died Sunday, April 27, 2003, in Clearwater.

Born Aug. 28, 1917, in Belleville, he was a son of the late John D. and Ida Zook Nafzinger. His wife, the former Nedra Y. Yoder Nafzinger, died in 1996.

Surviving are: a son, James S. of Palm Harbor, FL; a daughter, Brenda Hatton of Clark Summit; two sisters , Luella Yoder, Clearwater, FL, and Irene Collins, Reedsville; and two granddaughters.

He was a former member of the Lions Club of Palmer Township, and the Sylvan Abbey United Methodist Church, Clearwater, FL.

He was a branch manager of Sherwin Williams in Easton for 25 years until retiring. He then volunteered at the Elephant Trunk Store in Venice Hospital, FL. He was a collector of model trains.

His service will be private and at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Northampton Memorial Shrine, Palmer Township.

The Ashton Funeral Home, Easton, is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth I. Naylor
MIFFLIN - Ruth I. Naylor, 86, of Locust Grove Retirement Village, HC 67, Mifflin, and formerly of McAlisterville, died at 5:08 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15, 2003, at the Village.

Born Dec. 17, 1916, in Fayette Township, Juniata County, she was a daughter of the late Levi P. and Annie (Amey) Spade. Her husband, Robert L. Naylor Sr., whom she married July 20, 1943, survives.

She is also survived by her children, Keith D. Naylor and wife, Marcia, Robert L. Naylor Jr. and wife, Betty Lou, and Ruth Ann Haas and husband, Lester, all of RR2 McAlisterville; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She is the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by a brother, Marlin Spade, and four sisters , Verda Stuck, Mary Moad, Dorothy Seiler and Freda Carwell.

She was employed as a seamstress at the Shellenberger and Son Shirt Factory, McAlisterville.

She was a member of the McAlisterville United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women.

She enjoyed cooking, going out to eat and spending time with her family.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday from the McAlisterville Chapel of Brown Funeral Homes Inc., 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, with Pastor Joy Hulslander officiating. Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery, McAlisterville.

There will be no public viewing.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 501 Howard Ave., Building D 101, Altoona, PA 16601 or to the American Cancer Society, Mifflin-Juniata Unit, 26 N. Brown St., Lewistown, PA 17044.

Katherine James Firth Neel
FRESNO, CA - Katherine James Firth Neel, 86, died Feb. 16, 2003, in Fresno, CA, of Alzheimer's Disease.

She was born Dec. 11, 1917, in Yeagertown, the eleventh child of Herbert Wesley and Myrtle James Firth.

Surviving are: a sister, Laura Zong, Lewistown; a brother, William Firth, Montoursville; many nieces and nephews; and great and great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband Norman; sisters , Mary Farrell, Elizabeth Peterson, Peggy Saylor, Jean Johnson, Dorothy Snook, Alice Behr, and Eleanor Tahon; and brothers , Marion, John, Charles, George and Herbert Firth.

She graduated from Yeagertown High School in 1935 and earned an RN degree from Lewistown Hospital School of Nursing in 1939. She lived and worked as a nurse in New York City from 1939 until Oct. 1943, when she enlisted in the U.S. Army. 2nd Lieutenant Firth was stationed with the 121st Hospital in London, England, until the end of the war in 1945.

She returned to her life in New York where she met and married Norman Neel in 1948. The couple lived in Cleveland, OH and Georgetown, FL. She continued her nursing career. Norman Neel died in 1957. Mrs. Neel then moved to Fresno, CA, to be near her sister, Eleanor Tahon.

She worked at Fresno Community Hospital where she was Evening Supervisor of Nursing for 25 years.

After retirement from nursing, she earned her BA in Studio Arts from California State University at Fresno in 1987. She was close to completion of a third degree in Anthropology at the time of her final illness.

Katherine was a kind, loving, and encouraging person. She had an independent and adventurous spirit, and a lifelong love of learning. She was thoughtful and sensitive in her actions and elegant in her appearance. She had a deep love for animals and our earthly environment. She was much loved by all who knew her and she will be deeply missed.

At her request, her ashes will be buried on the grave of her mother , Myrtle James Firth at Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Vira. The family will hold a private service at a later date.

Carl H. Nichols
LEWISTOWN - Carl H. Nichols, 86, a resident of the Malta Home, formerly of Apt. 22 Open Hearth Manor, Lewistown, died at 6:20 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at Lewistown Hospital.

Born April 20, 1917, in Fayette County, he was a son of the late Henry J. and Hazel (Exline) Nichols. His wife, Dorothy S. (Kauffman) Nichols, whom he married Sept. 16, 1978, survives. His first wife, Grace Nichols preceded him in death.

Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Betty R.) Crawford, Christiana; seven step-children, Beverly E. Grove, St. Petersburg, Wanda L. Markel, Lewistown, Robert A. Lightfoot, Willow Street, William J. Lightfoot, Lancaster, Sandra L. Clinger, and Dennis E. Lightfoot, both of Lewistown, and Steven W. Lightfoot, Millersburg; a sister, Geraldine Kunkle, Illinois; two grandchildren, numerous step-grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, numerous step-great and step-great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a grandson.

He was a plumber / pipefitter for Plumber and Pipefitters Union #520, Harrisburg, and was a deputy game warden for 26 years.

He was a life member of Yeagertown Fire Co., Eastern Lancaster Co., Rod and Gun Club, and Atkinson Mills Sportsmen's Club.

His funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hoenstine Funeral Home, Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with Rev. Clifford R. Miller officiating. Interment will be in Mattawana Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Joseph R. Nichols
LEWISTOWN - Joseph R. Nichols, 62, of Blue Juniata Dr., Lewistown, entered into celebration of a new life with his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, May 6, 2003.

Born April 2, 1941, in Zanesville, Ohio, he was the son of Amy (Barnes) Nichols of Zanesville, Ohio and the late James Nichols. He was a dedicated family man, survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Janet F. (Renicks) Nichols.

Also surviving are: two sons , Eric J. Nichols, Pittsburgh and Todd J. and wife Kim Nichols, Lewistown. He was a treasured grandfather and fishing buddy to his two grandsons, Ian and Quinn of Lewistown. Also surviving are a sister, Nancy Besser and a brother, Terry Nichols, both of Zanesville, Ohio; niece and nephews, Rhonda Henry, Lewistown, Troy Nichols, Zanesville, Ohio, and Jason Kirby, Circleville, Ohio.

On Nov. 11, 2002, Joe and Jan celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary by renewing their vows surrounded by family and friends at the Lewistown Country Club. Ten years ago, Joe and Jan relocated to Joe's Dream Home on the Juniata River where many wonderful times and memories were shared together and with family and friends.

He was a mechanical engineer for Metlmex Corporation for 27 years and currently worked as a special projects engineer for Nittany Pharmaceutical.

He was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church for 30 years and a member and past president of the Lewistown Kiwanis Club.

A Celebration of Joe's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Grace United Methodist Church, 101 Logan St., Lewistown, with Pastor Chuck Sprenkle officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Rock Cemetery, Lewistown.

Family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Thursday at Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown.

Mildred L. Nicholson
LEWISTOWN - Mildred Louise (Shimp) Nicholson, 84, 44 French Drive, Lewistown, peacefully entered to rest with her Lord on Friday, Aug. 1, 2003.

Born Nov. 25, 1918, she was the wife of Alpha H. Nicholson, who preceded her in death on April 4, 1986.

Surviving is a sister, Irene S. Bailey of Lewistown.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Laticia Aurand Shimp and Roy Steely Shimp, three brothers and five sisters .

She was a graduate of Lewistown High School and Polyclinic School of Nursing.

She served as a Navy nurse at St. Albans. Returning to Lewistown, she worked at F.W. Black Hospital and Ohesson Manor.

She was a member of Lewistown Presbyterian Church, where she was a past deacon.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with Rev. Robert Zorn officiating. Interment will follow in William Lind Cemetery.

A viewing will be held 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the church.

Mildred requested no flowers. Donations may be made to the donor's choice in her honor.
