Percy A. Master
MIFFLINTOWN - Percy A. "Shorty" Master, 83, of Manbeck Heights, Mifflintown RR 4, died at 6:50 a.m, Wednesday, August 6, 2003 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
Born April 22, 1920 in Monroe Township, Juniata County, he was a son of the late Jacob I. and Sally (Benner) Master. His wife, Miriam (Shellenberger) Master, whom he married on December 21, 1957, survives.
Also surviving are two daughters , Deloris Dunn, Mifflintown HC 63 and Wanda Goshorn, Mifflintown RR 4; two sons , Richard M. Walters, Mifflintown, and David James Walters, Port Royal RR 3; eleven grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a 3 month old son, Glenn Arthur Master, 2 brothers , Paul Master and Lee Master and one sister, Lizzie Master.
He had been employed at the Hawstone brickyard for 25 years and then by Empire Kosher for 21 years, retiring in 1990.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Mifflin.
He enjoyed gardening and traveling.
His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church, Mifflin with Rev. James Harper officiating. Interment will be in Richfield Cemetery.
There will be a viewing Friday evening from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown and on Saturday at the church from 1 p.m. until the time of the services.

Raymond E. Mateer
MIDDLEBURG - Raymond E. Mateer, 70, of RR2 Middleburg, passed away at 10:25 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg, following a short illness.
Born April 28, 1932, in Milroy, he was a son of the late George T. and Mae I. (Thompson) Mateer. His wife, Virginia F. Havice, whom he married on Oct. 7, 1955, survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Rebecca L. Oldt and her husband, Michael, of RR2 Middleburg; three sons and daughters -in-law, Raymond B. and Phyllis A. Mateer of Kulpmont, Dr. Daniel T. and Amy K. Mateer of Lititz and Roger S. and Charlene B. Mateer of Mount Holly Springs; nine grandchildren, Bobbi L. and Jeremy C. Fisher, Michael D., Nicholas D. Nathaniel R. and Katelynn A. Oldt, Sarah N. Mateer, Tyrrell S. Drew and Trey L. Mateer; a brother, Robert L. Mateer of Waynesboro; three sisters , Betty Simcox of Tylersville, Emily L. Packer of Lamar and Judy A. Gajecti of Lititz; and his step-mother , Helen V. Mateer of Milroy.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Joyce, in infancy.
He was a 1950 graduate of Milroy High School and later attended Tri-State Engineering School, Indiana.
He had worked for the Reading Railroad and at a sheet metal shop in South Carolina. He later worked for John R. Wald Co. and then was self-employed in the restaurant industry.
He was a veteran of the
Korean War, serving in the Air Force.
He was a member of the Emmanuel United Church of Christ, Penns Creek.
He was also a member of the Elks Lodge, Sunbury, the Loyal Order of the Moose 1173, Selinsgrove, and the Big Spring Fish and Game Association, Newville.
He was an avid hunter who enjoyed the outdoors. He also enjoyed woodworking, reading and spending time with his grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, at Emmanuel United Church of Christ, Penns Creek, with Rev. Susan D'heedene officiating.

Herbert E. Mattern, Sr.
EAST PETERSBURG - Herbert E. Mattern, Sr., 67, of East Petersburg, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003, at Centre Community Hospital, State College.
Born in Lewistown, he was the son of the late William Jay and Reba Mae (Fisher) Mattern. He was the husband of Glenna R. (Hockenberry) Mattern. They celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary this past March 17.
Surviving are: two sons , Herbert E., Jr. married to Anne Mattern, Elm, and Redgie L. married to Donna Mattern, Manheim; a daughter, Susan M. married to Dennis Parmer, Ephrata; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Mattern.
He had been employed as a fleet manager for the United Parcel Service in Lancaster for 25 years, retiring in 1992. After retirement, he had worked for Hummer Turf and the Bent Creek Country Club.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the
Korean War, serving on the minesweeper USS Pidgeon.
He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of Garden Spot American Legion Post 56 in Lititz. He was a 32 degree mason, he was a member of Free and Accepted Masons Washington Lodge 156 of Quarryville, Lancaster Lodge of Perfection, Harrisburg Consistory, the Lancaster County Shrine Club, Tall Cedars of Lebanon Lancaster Forest 27, and the Rajah Shrine Club of Reading. He was also a member of the Germania Band Club of Manheim.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and had a hunting cabin in Juniata County.
Funeral services will be at 11:15 a.m. today from the Charles Snyder Funeral Chapel, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, with a masonic service at 11 a.m. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

John C. 'Bud' Mattern, Jr.
BEAVERTOWN - John C. "Bud" Mattern, Jr., 68, of Beavertown RR1, passed away at 10:15 p.m. June 13, 2003, at his home. He had been in ill health for the past two years.
Born June 7, 1935, in Beaver Springs, a son of Helen M. (Haines) Mattern of Beaver Springs and the late John C. Mattern, Sr. On April 20, 1957, he married Donna J. Zechman, who survives.
Also surviving are: fours sons , Trent A. and Nancy L., Scotch Plains, NJ, Terre A. and Tina M., Todd A. and Ann Claire "Dobble" and Travis A. and Tami C., all of Beavertown RR1; two brothers , Richard Lee Mattern, Beavertown RR1 and Stephen A. Mattern, Elkton, MD; and five grandchildren, Christopher, Tyler, Taylor, Hayes and Chase.
He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Beavertown, where he served as a deacon and on the church financial committee.
He graduated from Beaver Vocational High School in 1953. He graduated from Penn State in 1957 with a degree in Accounting. He received his MBA from Lehigh University in 1962.
He worked for Western Electric, AT&T and AT&T International at locations spanning the country from New York City to San Francisco, from 1957-88, starting as a staff trainee, retiring as Financial Vice President.
He served in the U.S. Air Force for three years stationed at the Earnest Harmon Air Force Base, Stephenville, Newfoundland. Upon retirement he started Beaver Construction. In 1993, he started Architectural Precast LLC, which his sons currently operate.
He enjoyed time with his grandchildren, camping, collecting John Deere tractors, being in the woods, singing around the campfire, playing the spoons and watching sports. He served on the financial committee and was an enthusiastic supporter of the Middlecreek Area Community Center and was an avid conservationist.
His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Jonna Gym, of the Middlecreek Area Community Center, Beaver Springs with Pastor Nancy Moyer and Rev. Alan Foor officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Beavertown where graveside military honors will be presented by American Legion Post 23, Beaver Springs.
Friends may call from 3-8 p.m., where family will be present from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's United Church of Christ.

Dorothy F. Matthews
MCVEYTOWN - Dorothy F. Matthews, 86, of 1222 Little Greenbriar Road, McVeytown, died Monday, June 16, 2003, at the home of her daughter, Shirley Hoover of Newton Hamilton. She had been in failing health.
Born Dec. 20, 1916, in Juniata County, she was a daughter of the late Harvey and Ida Mae (McMullen) Boone. Her husband, Benjamin I. Matthews, whom she married July 4, 1933, died Oct. 30, 1990.
Surviving are: nine children, Charles B. Matthews, McVeytown, Robert I. Matthews, Palmyra, Shirley Hoover, Newton Hamilton, James R. Matthews, Lewistown, Donna Peck, Mary Schucck, and Ronald E. Matthews, all of McVeytown, Connie J. Matthews, Dumfries, VA, Kenneth Z. Matthews, McVeytown; a brother, Melvin Boone, East Waterford; 37 grandchildren, 69 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by: two sons , Melvin Matthews and John Edward Matthews, and six brothers and three sisters .
She was a member of the Protestant Church.
She retired from Creitz Bologna Factory, Mt. Union, after many years of service.
She loved hunting, fishing and traveling.
She was a member of the Country Crossroads Senior Citizens, Atkinson Mills, where she enjoyed quilting.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mt. Union with Rev. Sam King officiating. Interment will be in Atkinson Mills Cemetery.
Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until the service time Friday at the funeral home.

Charles W. 'Dutch' McClellan
BELLEVILLE - Charles W. "Dutch" McClellan, 86, of 236 Hartzler Drive, Belleville, died Friday, June 27, 2003, at his residence.
Born April 19, 1917, in Burnham, he was a son of the late Jere McClellan and Myrtle (Shank) McClellan Carter. His wife, Kathryn E. (Reichenbach) McClellan, died Jan. 26, 2003.
Surviving are: a son, Eric S. McClellan and wife Suzanne, Willow Street; two half-brothers , William W. Carter, Lewistown and Daniel R. Carter, Milroy; a half-sister, Pat Carter, Camp Hill; two grandchildren, Reagan L. McClellan and Ryan E. McClellan, both of Lancaster; and a great-grandson, Isiah McClellan, Lancaster.
He was a graduate of Milroy High School, Class of 1933.
He was employed at American Viscose for over 30 years and was an agent for State Farm Insurance, Lewistown, for 31 years, retiring January 1982.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the European and African Theatres.
He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lewistown. He was a member of Ich Dien Class of the Sunday School, and Superintendent for 39 years. He was a past vice-president of the church council and a church usher. He was a member of Lewistown Lodge #203 F&AM, Jaffa Temple, Altoona, Harrisburg Consistory, Mifflin County Shrine Club, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, past Exalted Ruler of the Lewistown Elks Lodge #663, Treasurer of the Elks Marching Club and Treasurer of Troop 2 Boy Scouts of America and Treasurer of the Clubman's Association. He was also a member of American Legion Logan Guard Post 90, VFW, Belleville, and Lewistown Moose Lodge #143.
He was an avid hunter, golfer, diehard St. Louis Cardinals Baseball fan and a member of the East End Gang.
Private services will be at the convenience of the family in Juniata Memorial Park, with Rev. Gerald A. Krum officiating.

Kathryn E. McClellan
BELLEVILLE - Kathryn E. McClellan, 87, of 236 Hartzler Drive, Belleville, died at 2:15 a.m. Sunday Jan. 26, 2003, at Valley View Haven Nursing Home, Belleville.
Born Dec. 5, 1915, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Phares H. and Liberty (Walker) Reichenbach. Her husband, Charles W. McClellan, whom she married Oct. 1, 1943, survives.
Also surviving are: a son, Eric S. McClellan, Willow Street; PA; two grandchildren, Reagan L. and Ryan E. McClellan; and a great-grandchild, Isiah.
She was preceded in death by two brothers , Styron J. and George W. Reichenbach.
She worked at American Viscose Corp. as a clerk/typist for 12 years.
She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lewistown. She was a member of Augsburg Class of the Sunday School, Lutheran Christian Women, Miriam Circle, Lewistown Hospital Auxiliary, White Shrine, and Lewistown Elks Lodge Ladies Auxiliary.
Her funeral service will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park.

Margaret V. McCormick
MATTAWANA - Margaret V. McCormick, 87, of Clearview Lane, Mattawana, died at 1:55 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at Ohesson Manor, Lewistown.
Born Jan. 20, 1916, in Bratton Township, she was a daughter of the late Mary E. Buchanan. Her husband, Bruce R. McCormick, preceded her in death.
She was a 1934 graduate of Bratton-McVeytown-Oliver High School.
She retired from the Malta Home in Granville, having previously worked at the Arrow Shirt Factory in Lewistown.
She was a member of the Pine Glen Christian and Missionary Alliance Church and the Ambassadors Sunday School Class, having served as secretary for many years.
She enjoyed reading and traveling, and could quote many scripture verses from memory.
Her funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 South Market St., McVeytown, with Rev. Jerry Wise officiating. Interment will be in Pine Glen Cemetery.

Elsie V. McFadden
POTTERS MILLS - Elsie V. McFadden, 96, of Potters Mills died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at Valley View Haven, Belleville.
Born Aug. 5, 1907, in Potters Mills, she was a daughter of the late Edward and K. Barbara (Weaver) Sweetwood. Her husband, Lester McFadden, whom she married on March 23, 1929, died Feb. 26, 1991.
She was the last of her immediate family, having also been preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers .
Surviving are nieces and nephews.
She attended Potters Mills one room school through eighth grade.
Early in life she worked as a cook and was a homemaker most of her life.
She was a member of Sprucetown United Methodist Church and the ladies auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Potters Mills.
She especially enjoyed playing board games, cards and bingo.
At her request, there will be no public visitation. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at Sprucetown United Methodist Church Cemetery, Upper Georges Valley Road, Spring Mills, with the Rev. Galen Sharp, chaplain of Valley View Retirement Center, officiating.
