Leon S.C. 'Mike' Kuhns
Leon S.C. "Mike" Kuhns, 59, of Priest River, ID died May 27, 2003.

Born on Sept. 1, 1943, in Reedsville, he attended schools in Pennsylvania and served in the U.S. Navy from 1960 to 1964.

He was preceded in death in 2001 by the love of his life, soulmate and wife, June.

Surviving are two sons , a daughter and five grandchildren.

Owner and operator of Lee & sons Plumbing, he was a master plumber for more than 25 years. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed yard work, landscaping and playing Keno.

There will be a private family memorial in the fall.

Richard B. Kuhns
MILROY - Richard B. Kuhns, 66, of Milroy, died at 6:32 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2003, at William Penn Nursing Home, Lewistown.

Born June 18, 1936, in Reedsville, he was a son of the late Forrie B. and Edna M. (Parson) Kuhns. His wife, Beverly C. (Bubb) Kuhns, died Jan. 10, 1999.

Surviving are: four children, Richard B. Kuhns, Jr., Lewistown, Dennis G. Kuhns, Wanda K. Sambenetti, and Scott Weston Kuhns, all of Milroy; seven siblings, Donna Mitchell, Milroy, Barbara Fultz, Ferguson Valley Rd., Nancy Bell, Lewistown, Patsy Kratzer, Reedsville, Robert Kuhns, Sr., Reedsville, Connie Griffith, Milroy, and Clifford Kuhns, Sr., Reedsville; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by: a son, Randy E. Kuhns on April 3, 1999; two brothers , William E. Kuhns and Thomas H. Kuhns; and a sister, Joyce Vandetti.

He had worked at American Viscose, Lewistown, on construction, and he transported Amish.

He served in the U.S. Army as an M.P. He enjoyed hunting.

His funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bohn Funeral Home, Reedsville, with Pastor Douglas D. Sabin officiating. Interment will be held in Salem Cemetery, Siglerville.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Kenny L. Kurrell Jr.
MT. PLEASANT Mills - Kenny L. Kurrell Jr.,16, of RR1 Mt. Pleasant Mills, died Monday, April 21, 2003 from an auto accident.

He was the son of Kenny L. and Melody A. (Searer) Kurrell. He was a junior at Middleburg High school where he played baseball, he also played football for East Juniata Tigers.

Surviving are: a sister, Aubrey M. Kurrell, RR1 Mt. Pleasant Mills; maternal grandmother, Pauline M. Searer, RR 1 Mt. Pleasant Mills; paternal grandparents, Frank Jr. and Roberta Kurrell, RR3 Sunbury; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation from 6-9 p.m. Friday at Hummel Funeral Home, Middleburg and from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at Richfield Mennonite Church. His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Interment will be in Richfield Union Cemetery

Eva L. Kurtz
BURNHAM - Eva. L. Kurtz, 83, of Valley View Retirement Community, Belleville, formerly of First Ave., Burnham, died at 8:04 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Valley View Retirement Community, Belleville.

Born Feb. 7, 1920, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Ralph E. and Sarah A. (Stuck) Spigelmyer. Her husband, Charles E. Kurtz, died June 4, 1978.

Surviving are: two daughters , Dawn H. Crossley, Tallahassee, FL, and Judy A. Himes, Milroy; and five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by children, Mary Alice Kurtz, Warren James Kurtz, and Charles E. Kurtz Jr., and brothers , Otis Spigelmyer and Richard Spigelmyer.

She had worked at Fishers Electronics, Milroy.

She was a member of the Women's Auxiliary Loyal Order of the Moose, Lewistown.

Her funeral service will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Kish Valley Grace Brethren Church, Reedsville, with Rev. Douglas D. Sabin officiating. Interment will be in Church Hill Cemetery.

Friends and family will be received from 2:30 p.m. until the time of the service at the church.

Bohn Funeral Home, Reedsville, is in charge of arrangements.

Eva M. Kurtz
MILROY - Eva M. Kurtz, 80, of 24 Andrew St., Milroy, died at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at her residence.

Born April 9, 1923, in Bellefonte, she was a daughter of the late Domenico and Angeline (Ponti) Presto. Her husband, George R. Kurtz, Sr., whom she married July 17, 1946, survives.

Also surviving are: three sisters , Frances Bubb, and Dora L. Presto, both of Milroy and Rose Sweitzer Crozier, Centre Hall.

She was preceded in death by a son, George R. Kurtz, Jr., on March 31, 1985; a brother, James R. Presto, on July 12, 2003; two brothers -in-law, Ira W. Crozier and James L. Bubb, Sr.

She had worked at Arrow Shirt Factory, Lewistown. She retired from Fisher Electronics in Milroy.

She was a member of Milroy United Methodist Church. She greatly enjoyed doing crafts and quilting.

Her funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Milroy United Methodist Church with Rev. Bert Bowen officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown.

Friends may call from noon until the service time Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be sent to: Milroy United Methodist Church, 91 S. Main St., Milroy, PA 17063.

Curtis L. LaChapelle
REEDSVILLE - Curtis L. LaChapelle, 21, of 309 Three Cent Lane, Reedsville, died at 2:25 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at Lewistown Hospital.

Born Oct. 27, 1981, in Lewistown, he was the son of Tammy Kurtz, Milroy and Norman LaChapelle, Mt. Joy.

He was raised by his grandparents, Steven and Oleda "Micki" Hetrick, Reedsville.

Also surviving are his fiancee, Jen Brunner, Newton Hamilton, and his brother, Joseph LaChapelle, Lancaster.

He was employed at Oakwood Homes, Lewistown.

A 2000 honor graduate at Indian Valley High School, he was attending Penn State University, where he was on the dean's list. He liked to play golf and go fishing and played football and basketball in high school and was awarded a football scholarship to St. Francis College.

His funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 28, at the Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with Glen Peachey officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Rock Cemetery, Lewistown.

Friends may call 6-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Celena M. Laird
PORT ROYAL - Celena M. Laird, 22, of Pine Meadow Apartments, Selinsgrove, and formerly of Port Royal, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 11. 2003, in an auto accident in Juniata County.

Born Sept. 11, 1980, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of Gisele M. (Willi) Shatto of RR2, Middleburg and the late James I. Laird, who died Sept. 25, 1985.

Also surviving are a daughter, Ivy M. Laird, at home; a companion, Chauncey Jones of Selinsgrove; step-fathers, James Shatto of RR2, Middleburg and Clark E. Knisely of RR3, Port Royal; and two brothers , William J. Laird and Joshua D. Laird, both of RR3, Port Royal.

She was a homemaker.

She was a 1997 graduate of Juniata High School, Mifflintown.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal, with Pastor David Beiser officiating. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Walker Township, Juniata County.

A viewing will be held 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Charles R. 'Dick' Landis
MCALISTERVILLE - Charles R. "Dick" Landis, 78, a resident of Valley View Retirement Community, Belleville, formerly of RR1 McAlisterville, went to be with his Lord at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Lewistown Hospital.

Born Nov. 22, 1924, in Mifflintown, he was a son of the late Charles M. and Rebecca Ruth (Rickenbaugh) Landis.

Surviving are: two sons , Byron R. "Barry" Landis and wife Jeannie, McAlisterville, and Charles R. "Rick" Landis and wife Gayle, RR1 Mifflintown; a brother, Ronald L. Landis, Beavertown; two sisters , Helen Jean Willow, Thompsontown, and Sue L. Leister, Harrisburg; 6 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson.

He was a World War II U.S. Army Veteran, having served in the European Theater.

He was an active member of St. John's United Methodist Church, RR1 McAlisterville for 60 years where he sang in the church choir, was Sunday School Superintendent and also a Sunday School teacher. He was also a member of the Bunkertown Men's Chorus.

Earlier in life he had been employed by the PA Railroad as a diesel mechanic and later as a truck driver for Kaplan Trucking, before retiring in 1985 with 17 years of service for the Commonwealth of PA as a Ward Nurse from the Harrisburg State Hospital.

He enjoyed his pets, and loved all animals; he also enjoyed listening to and singing Gospel music, and had a lifelong interest in cars.

His funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's United Methodist Church, RR1 McAlisterville with Rev. Ronald E. Landis officiating. Interment will be in St. John's United Methodist Cemetery, RR1 McAlisterville, where full military burial honors will be accorded by the Juniata County Veterans Council.

A viewing will be from 4-9 p.m. Tuesday with the family present from 7-9 p.m. at the McAlisterville Chapel of Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville. There will be no viewing Wednesday at the church.

Kenneth S. Landis
NEWPORT-&emdash; Kenneth S. "uncle Ken" Landis, 78, of Newport died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at his home.

Born July 27, 1924 in Juniata Co., he was the son of the late Samuel and Annie (Zellers) Landis. His wife, Sandra J. (Davis) Landis died on Feb. 19, 1985.

Surviving are two daughters , Mrs. John (Connie) Rhoads, Newport and Molly J. Landis, Meda Nipple Nursing Home, Maze; a sister, Mildred Achenbach, Elizabethtown; 4 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Terry L. Landis, Sr. and siblings, Melvin, Gerald, Chester, Percy, Ray, Ethel and Hazel.

He was a US Navy veteran, serving on the USS Antietam during WW II. He was the former owner of The Curve Restaurant, New Bloomfield and a member of the Mifflintown VFW, Mifflintown American Legion, Thompsontown AmVets, Newport Owl's Club, and the Perry Alliance Church, Shermansdale.

His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown with Pastor Leroy Achenbach officiating. Interment will be in the Adams Cemetery, Mifflintown. military honors will be accorded by the Juniata County Veterans Council. There will be a viewing one hour prior to the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Visiting Nurse Association Hospice, 3315 Derry St., Harrisburg, PA 17111.

Elizabeth H. Lannigan
MILROY - Elizabeth H. Lannigan, 93, of 267 Sigler St., Milroy, died at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2003, at her residence.

Born Feb. 1, 1910, in Yeagertown, she was a daughter of the late Philo and Mary R. (Tulley) Heller. Her husband, Samuel Lannigan, preceded her in death in 1990.

Surviving are a niece, Mrs. Daryl (Jane) Fondren of Wilmington, DE; and a nephew, Mr. Mike Heller of Vancouver, WA.

She was a bookkeeper for FMC for 19 years and RCA in Lancaster.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with Father Thomas Marickovic. Interment will be private.

Shirley L. Lantz
LEWISTOWN - Shirley L. Lantz, 73, of 137 Terrace Blvd., Lewistown, died at 8:45 p.m. Friday, June 13, 2003, at Hershey Medical Center.

Born June 8, 1930, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late John and Alice (Bowers) McCrory. Her husband, Marvin S. Lantz, whom she married in 1949, survives.

Also surviving are: five children, Stanley Lantz, Yardley, Marvin Lantz, Morrisville, Lucinda Lantz, Boca Raton, FL, Stephan Lantz, Langhorne, and Mrs. Alex (Lisa) Rutt, Lancaster; six siblings, John McCrory, Marcus Hook, James McCrory, Lewistown, Marilyn Shingler, Ind., Dennis McCrory, Lewistown, Samuel McCrory, FL, and William McCrory, Lewistown; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Donald.

She worked at Arrow Shirt Factory.

She attended CMA Church, Lewistown.

Her funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Barr Funeral Home, Inc., 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with Rev. John Looney officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Rock Cemetery.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Samuel H. Lash, Sr.
LEWISTOWN - Samuel H. Lash, Sr., 87, of 46 Parkview Avenue, Lewistown, died at 6:12 p.m. Sunday, July 6, 2003, at his residence.

Born May 11, 1916, in McClure, he was a son of the late Samuel H. and Catherine Rebecca (Gilbert) Lash. His wife, Bertha A. (Fye) Lash, whom he married March 21, 1946, survives.

Also surviving are: nine children, Mrs. William (Frances J.) Marsh, Lewistown, Samuel H. Lash, Jr., and wife Michele, Burnham, Walter L. Lash, Lewistown, Joan M. Stailey, McConnellstown, Joseph L. Lash, Lewistown, Luann J. Lash, Ruth L. Lash, and Mrs. Dale (Joyce L.) Wray, all of Milroy, and James R. Lash, Lewistown; a sister, Dorothy Gordon, Lewistown; 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: a daughter, Bertha M. "Ike" Smith on Oct. 5, 1999; three brothers , two sisters , two half-brothers and two half-sisters .

He was a truck driver for W.B Wills, retiring in 1981.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II.

He was a life member of Newtown Fire Company. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and he enjoyed gardening.

His funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham, with Pastor Tony Ramos officiating. Interment will be in Birch Hill Cemetery where graveside military services will be conducted by VFW Post 7011.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
