Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Doris A. Gearhart
REEDSVILLE - Doris A. Gearhart, 74, of 81 N. Main St., Reedsville, died at 7:07 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

Born April 5, 1929, in Reedsville, she was the daughter of the late Ner Cottle Coulter, Sr., and M. Margaret (Hetrick) Coulter.

Her husband, Joseph D. Gearhart, whom she married Sept. 8, 1951, survives.

She is survived by a son, Brent Coulter Gearhart and his wife, Carol, Pfafftown, NC; and a brother, Robert H. Coulter, Reedsville.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Ner C. Coulter, Jr., and a sister, Mrs. Martin (Mary Ellen) Yoder.

She was a 1947 graduate of Reedsville High School and a graduate of the Geisinger School of Nursing.

She served in nursing and healthcare for 50 years, retiring as a registered nurse in 1994 from Valley View Retirement Community in Belleville. She was also a member of the East End Homemakers.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society.

There will be no viewing. A memorial service will be announced at a later time.

Vernon A. Gearhart
BELLEVILLE - Vernon A. Gearhart, 85, of Hartzler Drive, Belleville, and formerly of McVeytown, died at 12:20 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at Lewistown Hospital.

Born Feb. 8, 1917, in Oliver Township, he was a son of the late Joseph A. and Ollie (Swartz) Gearhart. HIs wife, Sarabelle (Rhodes) Gearhart, whom he married Feb. 8, 1941, survives.

Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers , Lawrence Gearhart and Donald Gearhart, and two sisters , Ruth Harshbarger and Edith Wagner.

He was a 1935 graduate of McVeytown-Oliver High School and a 1938 graduate of Thompson Business Institute.

He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force from 1943 to 1946, having served in the Asia-Pacific Theatre.

He was a former manager of the Lewistown branch of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau.

He retired in 1982 with 26 years of service as manager of the McVeytown branch of the First National Bank of Lewistown.

He was a member of the Spring Run Church of the Brethren and the Careful Builders Sunday School Class of the church. He also served his church as auditor for many years and as a member of the pastoral and finance boards.

He was a former member and officer of the McVeytown Lions Club, and enjoyed golfing and camping.

A viewing will be held 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 S. Market St., McVeytown.

A committal service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Spring Run Cemetery, McVeytown.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Spring Run Church of the Brethren with Rev. Jerry Lee Miller officiating.

Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service Monday at the church. There will be no viewing at the church.

Romona L. 'Mona' Geckle
BELLEVILLE - Romona L. "Mona" Geckle, 49, of 3644 W. Main St., Belleville, died at 11 a.m. Monday, July 28, 2003, at Lewistown Hospital.

Born Sept. 4, 1953, in Los Angeles, CA, she was the daughter of Sophie (Abraham) King of Geneva, NY and the late Chester King. Her husband Michael K. Geckle, whom she married Sept. 22, 1979, survives.

Also surviving are: two children, Amber Geckle and Brian Geckle, both at home; and a brother, David King, Geneva, NY.

She was a self-employed home cleaner. She was a member of Maple Grove Mennonite Church, Belleville.

She was Junior Girl Scout Leader for Belleville Troop 336. She served her Church Family in the following capacities: Girl Club Leader, MYF Leader, Hostess, Usher, Gifts Committee, Primary Sunday School Teacher and Post High Sunday School Teacher.

Her funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Maple Grove Mennonite Church, Belleville, with Pastor Alan Kauffman officiating.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until the service time Wednesday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to: Maple Grove Youth Programs, for service projects to be done for those having needs.

Hoenstine Funeral Home, Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, PA 17044 is in charge of arrangements.

Robert R. Gehrett
EATON TWP. - Robert R. Gehrett Jr., 79, of Eaton Twp., Ohio, died July 17, 2003.

He was the son of the late Robert R. and Florence Gehrett of Lewistown.

His wife, Arlena, survives. He is also survived by two children, six step-children, 17 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, a brother, Paul Gehrett, and a sister, Ruth White .

He was preceeded in death by a son, Robert R. Gehrett III, a brother, C. William Gehrett, and a sister, Martha Bowman.

He was a graduate of Penn State University, served honorably in the U.S. Army during WWII and retired as CEO of TRW.

Services were held July 21 at Ohio Western National Cemetery, Rittman, Ohio.

Wilson M. Gentzel
LEWISTOWN - Wilson M. Gentzel, 82, of Lewistown, passed away Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at the Meda Nipple Convalescent Home, Thompsontown.

Born Aug. 23, 1920, in Snyder County, he was a son of the late Ralph and Mary (McClellan) Gentzel. On April 19, 1941, he married the former Margaret J. Bachman, who survives.

Also surviving are: a daughter, Donna J. Hackett, Lewistown; two step- daughters , Roberta Guinivan, Lewistown and Margaret Wilson, Thompsontown; eight grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, ten step-great-grandchildren and a sister, Sarah Folk of New Jersey.

He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Wilson Gentzel on April 25, 1992.

He was a professional finish carpenter. He worked for J.M. Young in Belleville for 30 years, where he was affectionately known as "Willey". He was a member of St. John's Ridge Lutheran Church, RR2 McClure. He was a master woodcarver and carpenter. He enjoyed traveling in the motor home, square-dancing, and deep sea fishing. He always had a smile on his face no matter where he was. He was also a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose of Lewistown.

His funeral service was held Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at the St. John's Ridge Lutheran Church. Interment was in Black Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Arrangements were by Aurand Funeral Homes, 316 W. Market St., Beavertown.

Marguerite H. Getz
BEAVERTOWN - Marguerite H. Getz, 90, of Beavertown, passed away at 12:45 a.m. Sunday, May 11, 2003, at Riverwoods, where she had been a resident since the beginning of May.

Born May 4, 1913, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Clayton B. and Helen (Casner) Zong. On Feb. 19, 1931, she married John David Getz, who resides at Outlook Pointe, Lewisburg.

Also surviving are: two daughters , Barbara Ann Butterworth, Newton, MA and Carol Ann Sadowski, Lewisburg; three grandchildren, Anne Goldberg, Jane and John David Butterworth and a great-grandson, Matthew Goldberg.

She was preceded in death by two sisters , Marie Edel and Ruth Eberhardt and a brother, Paul Zong.

She had worked for the Educational Records Bureau, New York City as a supervisor for eight years and for R.H. Macy as a sales person for ten years.

She was a member of the Rescue Hose Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary, Beavertown and attended the Beaver Springs Senior Center. She enjoyed reading, cooking, spending time with her family and being a Girl Scout leader.

Her funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Beavertown chapel of Aurand Funeral Homes, 316 W. Market St., Beavertown, with Rev. Thomas Schroeder officiating. Interment will be in St. Mark's Cemetery, Lewistown.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until the service time Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be sent to: Rescue Hose Fire Co., Beavertown, PA 17813.

Albert N. Giardine
MT. UNION - Albert N. Giardine, 85, of 15 Front Drive, (Country Club Road), Mt. Union, died unexpectedly at 10:05 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at William Penn Nursing Home, Lewistown.

Born Aug. 29, 1917, in Mt. Union, he was the son of the late Nazareno and Antonia (Zinobile) Giardine.

Surviving are: friend and companion of 42 years, O. Louise Huey, of HC 61, Mill Creek; children, Jane (Huey) Kifer and husband, Ronald and their children, Laura and Rebecca Kifer, all of Lewistown; Gina Huey and daughter, Nikki Huey, HC Mill Creek; and Albert Huey and wife, Diane (Hoskinson) Huey and their children, Albert, Krystin, and Emily Huey, and Ashley Crawford, Mt. Union; a sister, Lucy Forgy, Mt. Union.

He was preceded in death by two brothers , Romeo Giardine, Levittown, and Alfred Giardine, Mill Creek; and two sisters , Jenny Temple and Zana Brennan, both of Altoona.

He was a 1936 graduate of Mt. Union High School, where he was active in sports. Following graduation, he worked at the CC Camps and then the Pittsburgh steel mills until World War II, where he served with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Following the war, he built the Giardine Motel Town Talk Lounge and operated it until his retirement.

He was an active member of Moose Lodge #223 and Elks Lodge, both of Huntingdon, the Disabled American Veterans Assoc., Bricktown Seniors, VFW Post 5754, Mt. Union, and a life member of American Legion Post 107, Mt. Union.

In his retirement years, Al enjoyed the outdoors and attending his grandchildren's sports activities.

His funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mt. Union, with Rev. Gordon Ross officiating. Interment will be in St. Catherine's Cemetery, RD1 Shirleysburg.

Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, and after 9 a.m. Sunday until the time of the service at the church.

Richard L. Gibbons
MIFFLIN - Richard L. Gibbons, 55, of Mifflin, died at 4:24 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Lewistown Hospital.

His funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday from the Henry Funeral Home, Honey Grove. Interment will be in East Waterford Cemetery with full military honors by the Juniata Veterans Council.

Friends may call from noon until 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Alma K. Gilbert
MIDDLEBURG - Alma K. Gilbert, 81, of Middleburg RR1, died at 9:26 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at Geisinger Medical Center.

Born Dec. 1, 1921, in Mifflin County, she was a daughter of the late Elijah S. and Ivy S. (Harshbarger) Harshbarger. Her husband, George J. Gilbert, preceded her in death Aug. 31, 1972.

Surviving are: two daughters , Mrs. Russell (Nancy L.) Snyder and Mrs. Dana (Linda K.) Hassinger, both of McClure; siblings, Martha Harshbarger, McVeytown, Paul Harshbarger, McVeytown, Mrs. Charles (Alice) Shirey, McClure, Lester Harshbarger, Manheim, Leonard Harshbarger, Sweet Valley, and Harold Harshbarger, Kersey;six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren including Eric Stahl, whom she raised.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty S. Gilbert in May of 1996 and a companion, Jay Reich.

She was a lifelong farmer, also having owned Gilbert's General Store in Bannerville for many years. She also worked at Middleburg Silk Mill.

Her funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 S. Market St., McVeytown with Rev. George Mark officiating. Interment will be in Mattawana Cemetery, McVeytown.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be sent to the charity of one's choice.

Barry E. Gilbert
MIFFLIN - Barry E. Gilbert, 60, of 138 Pannebaker Avenue, Lewistown, died at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin.

Born Jan. 18, 1943 in Milroy, he was the son of the late Charles E. Gilbert and Marion (Griffith) Rager.

His wife, Beverly M. (Sunday) Gilbert whom he married Dec. 11, 1992, survives.

He is also survived by a son, Barry A. Gilbert, Groton, CT; two step-sons , Donald E. Lukens, Felton, DE and Brian S. Lukens, Lewistown, one step-daughter, Cynthia L. Powell, Lewistown, one grand child, nine step-grandchildren, and nine step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a step-son, George Lukens, and a sister, Cheryl Kibe.

He was a supervisor at Lewistown Cabinet Factory and was a United States Army veteran of Vietnam.

He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Milroy and the VFW.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, at Hoenstine Funeral Home, Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with Rev. Rosalie Smith officiating. There will be no viewing.

Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Milroy, with a graveside military service conducted by VFW Post 7011. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 26 N. Brown St., Lewistown, PA 17044 or to the charity of one's choice.

James L. 'Tucker' Gilbert
MIFFLIN - James L. "Tucker" Gilbert, 73, of 204 Foster St., Mifflin died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at Locust Grove Retirement Village.

His service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown with Rev. Gary Krabill officiating. Interment will be in St. Stephen's Lutheran Cemetery, Licking Creek Valley. There will be a viewing 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 26 N. Brown St., Lewistown, PA 17044.
