Herman E. Barth
MCVEYTOWN - Herman E. Barth, 74, of 7689 US Hwy 522 South, McVeytown died at 7:49 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Lewistown Hospital's emergency room.
Born Jan. 29, 1928, in Mifflin County, he was a son of the late Wilbur R. and Mary (Espigh) Barth. His wife, Clara P. (Casner) Barth, whom he married on Feb. 16, 1952, survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Timothy (Kristie) Morrison, 7679 US Hwy 522 South; and a sister, Mrs. James (Sara) Murphy, Lewistown.
He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
He attended McVeytown-Oliver High School.
He was a wheel checker in Machine Shop 1 at Standard Steel, retiring in 1991. Earlier he had worked for American Viscose Corp. Division of FMC.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theatre.
He was a member of Spring Run Church of the Brethren, McVeytown Lodge #376 F&AM, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Harrisburg Consistory and a life member of B.P.O.E. Lodge #663.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Spring Run Church of the Brethren, with Rev. Jerry L. Miller officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park Cemetery.
Family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, where a Masonic Service will be held at 8:30 p.m.

William T. 'Bill' Baxter
YEAGERTOWN - William T. "Bill" Baxter, 66, of 32 S. Mann Ave., Yeagertown, died at 11:10 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2003, in Lewistown Hospital E.R., Lewistown.
Born Jan. 3, 1937, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late Andrew and Rachel (Moore) Baxter. His wife, Frieda (Shunkwiler) Baxter, whom he married June 12, 1960, survives.
Also surviving are: six children, Mrs. Gregory (Elizabeth) Marsh, Lewistown, Douglas K. Baxter and Matthew B. Baxter, both of McVeytown, Dawn Marie Koontz, Lewistown, Ian P. Baxter, and Melissa P. Baxter, both of Yeagertown; two brothers and three sisters , Harold Baxter, Palm City, FL, Shirley Silfies, Mrs. Harold (Anna Mae) Zimmerman, and Mrs. William (Peg) Stine, all of Lewistown, and Raymond "Bud" Baxter, Piscataway, NJ; and seven grandchildren.
He was a laborer for Guardian Industries, Lewistown, with 15 years of service, retiring in 2000.
He attended Yeagertown United Methodist Church.
His funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, First Ave., Burnham, with Rev. Thomas B. Morningstar officiating. Interment will be in Lind Memorial Cemetery, Lewistown.

Owen Chappell 'Shorty' Beachel
MCALISTERVILLE - Owen Chappell 'Shorty' Beachel, 88, of RR1 McAlisterville, died at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at Penn Lutheran Village Nursing Center, Selinsgrove, where he resided for nearly two years.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wayside Bible Church, Middleburg. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
George P. Garman Funeral Home, Inc., Mt. Pleasant Mills, is in charge of arrangements.
Haven L. Bearley Sr.
LEWISTOWN &endash; Haven L. Bearley Sr., 89, a resident of Valley View Haven, Belleville and formerly of 921 W. Fifth St., Lewistown, died at 2:12 a.m. Monday Jan. 6, 2003, at Valley View Haven.
Born Oct. 25, 1913, in Mifflin County, he was a son of the late Robert H. and Elizabeth G. (Grimm) Bearley. His wife, Sarah E. Bearley, preceded him in death Jan. 13, 1994.
Surviving are: two sons , William R. Bearley, 1006 W. Fifth St., Lewistown, and Haven L. Bearley Jr., North Huntingdon; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was the last of his immediate family.
He was a graduate of Lewistown High School, Class of 1932.
He was a retired mechanic for the American Viscose Corporation, division of FMC for over 40 years.
He was a member of Lake Park United Methodist Church.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II from 1941-1945 and was a Clarinet player in the 66th Infantry Band in England, France and Germany, where he was one of two assistant band leaders. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one bronze star, American Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He played the Sax and Clarinet for various local dance bands for many years.
His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown with Rev. Mark S. Brower officiating. Interment will be in Lind Memorial Cemetery. military graveside services will be by VFW Post 7011.

Theodore C. Beaver
COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA - Theodore C. Beaver, 65, of Council Bluffs, IA, formerly of Lewistown, died Friday, May 9, 2003, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital, Council Bluffs, IA.
Born Feb. 8, 1938, in Lewistown, he was a son of Lester and Margaret (Stayrook) Beaver. His wife, Barbara (Clevenger) Beaver, whom he married April 6, 1998, survives at home.
Also surviving are a son, Ron Beaver, Council Bluffs, IA; four daughters , Karen Kerres and husband, Anthony, Omaha, NE, Cyndi Croker, Council Bluffs, IA, Kathy Hieb and husband, Richard, Lake Dallas, TX, and Sheri Wilson, and husband, Ross, Council Bluffs, IA; a brothers , Fred Beaver, Delaware; two sisters , Esther Peck and husband, Gregory, and Helen Shotzberger, both of Lewistown; three step- daughters , one step-son, and 15 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Leroy Beaver, on Feb. 16, 1999.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
He was a locksmith for Council Bluffs Schools, retiring in 1996 with 17 years of service.
He attended First Congregational Church.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Chapel, Council Bluffs, IA, with Rev. Dean Goebel, interim pastor at First Congregational Church, officiating. A cremation service with burial of ashes will follow at Ridgewood Cemetery, Council Bluffs, IA.
A viewing will be held 7-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Harry Ralph Beers Sr.
LEWISTOWN - Harry Ralph Beers Sr., 73, of Apt. 202, 120 Chestnut St., Lewistown, went to be with his Lord and family at 5:52 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2003, at Lewistown Hospital, during a brief stay.
Born Aug. 11, 1929, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late Albert L. Sr. and Maude A. (Peters) Beers. His wife, Gertrude P. "Gertie" (Lykens) Beers, died Dec. 27, 1984.
Surviving are: two daughters , Mrs. James (Virginia) "Jenny" Wileman, Sr., and Mrs. Randy (Marjorie) Reinhart, Sr., both of Lewistown; a son, Harry R. "Jr" Beers, Jr. and his wife Mary, Lewistown; three brothers , Norman Beers Sr., and William Beers Sr., Lewistown, and Robert Beers, Reedsville; 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by: a son, George Beers; three brothers , George, Emory, and Albert Jr. Beers; a sister, Martha (Beers) Kerstetter; a grandson, Harry Alexander Beers; and two great-grandsons, James Paul and Maverick James Peterson.
He was a maintenance employee for the Pennsylvania Railroad, retiring due to disability in 1971.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in Europe and the Pacific, and also the Korean Conflict. He was discharged after Korea as a Staff Sergeant.
He was a Baptist by Faith. He was a former member of Junction Fire Company #15, and a life member of Mifflin County Forest Fire Fighters.
His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hoenstine Funeral Home, 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with Rev. John S. Walters, officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park, with graveside services by VFW Post 7011, Lewistown.

Floyd H. 'Toad' Bell
MIFFLINTOWN - Floyd H. "Toad" Bell, 77, of RR1 Mifflintown, died at 4:15 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at Locust Grove Retirement Village, HC 67, Mifflin.
Born Dec. 2, 1925, in Spruce Hill Twp., Juniata County, he was a son of the late John A. and Emma (Hockenberry) Bell. His wife, Roxie J. (Worrall) Bell, whom he married Sept. 1, 1951, survives.
Also surviving are: three children, Melvin L. Bell, Mifflintown, Mrs. Terry (Pamela J.) Rosenberry, RR1 Mifflintown, and Herb Bell, RR1 Mifflintown; and two grandchildren, Mrs. Josh (Kelly) Bowen, Murfreesboro, NC, and Josh Rosenberry, of RR1 Mifflintown.
He was the last of his immediate family having been preceded in death by five brothers .
He was a World War II U.S. Navy Veteran.
He retired from PennDOT as a state highway inspector.
He was a member of the Arch Rock UMC, where he had served on the Board of Trustees and Church Council and was a charter member of the Crawford-Brubaker VFW Post 5863, Mifflintown.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid NASCAR fan.
His funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Mifflintown Chapel of Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown with Rev. Clair R. Troutman officiating. Interment will be in Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown.

Martha E. Bell
DALLASTOWN - Martha E. Bell, 74, of Dallastown, died Friday evening at her home.
Born Feb. 6, 1929, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Warren A. and Marian S. (Snook) Snyder.
Surviving are: two sons , Warren Bell, Dover and James G. Bell, Jr., York; two grandchildren and a brother, W. Lynn Snyder of Brogue.
She was employed as a waitress at several local restaurants and clubs for a number of years and was also a salesperson for Bell's Used Cars and Marlin's Auto Sales, both of Windsor. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW in Red Lion.
Her funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Austin H. Eberly Funeral Home, Inc., 104 W. Main St., Dallastown, with Rev. Roger Mentzer officiating. Interment will be in Blymires Cemetery, Dallastown.

Walter L. Bell
LEWISTOWN - Walter L. Bell, 74, of 1103 U.S. Highway 522 North, Lewistown, died at 10:58 p.m. Monday, June 30, 2003, at Lewistown Hospital.
Born May 3, 1929, in Alfarata, he was a son of the late William L. Sr. and Mary (Laub) Bell. His wife, Joyce (Stimely) Bell, whom he married Nov. 6, 1950, survives.
Also surviving are: five children, Mrs. Dan (Linda) Knepp, Lewistown, Diane Brown, Reedsville, Jeffrey Bell, Michael Bell, and Mrs. Martin (Gloria) Fleishman, all of Lewistown; three brothers , James B. Bell, William K. Bell and Charles E. Bell, all of Lewistown; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by: a granddaughter, Erika Bell; a sister, Nancy Dubendorf; and a half brother, Robert Brady.
He worked for 32 years at Arrow Shirt Factory, nine years at the Lyon Factory and also at Lewistown Paper.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of the Maitland Church of the Brethren.
Walter was an outgoing grandparent, taking his granddaughters, Kylie, Nealie, Erika and Tiffany, fishing with his grandsons, Aaron, Branden, Jarrod, Jordan and Jonathan. He loved to hunt and teach them woodworking skills. He also loved his family and his wife. He served his church with a passion.
His funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Maitland Church of the Brethren, with Rev. Charles Eldredge officiating. Interment will be in Maitland Cemetery.

Carl L. "Pete" Benner, Sr.
MIFFLINTOWN - Carl L. "Pete" Benner, Sr., 82, of Brookline Manor, Mifflintown, formerly of Locust Run, died at 8:15 a.m. Monday, September 8, 2003 at Brookline Manor.
Born March 12, 1921 in Bunkertown, he was a son of the late Jay and Mary (Kauffman) Benner. His wife, Laura M. (Wetzler) Benner, died July 31, 1999.
Surviving are one son, Carl L. Benner, Jr. and wife Dorothy M., Thompsontown; one brother, Henry Benner, Palmyra; one sister, Wilma Fisher, Newport; one grandson, Roger Benner and wife, Brenda; one granddaughter, Penny Steigleman and husband, Scott; and three great-grandchildren, Trevin Steigleman and Maria and Travis Benner.
He was preceded in death by two brothers , Roy Benner and Robert Benner and an infant sister, Mildred Benner.
He was a veteran of the United States Army and fought under General Patton at the Battle of the Bulge during World War II.
He worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad in the Enola steel shop for 22 years and then retired from the Harrisburg State Hospital where he was a meat cutter.
He was a member of Locust Run United Methodist Church, the Mifflintown American Legion , a charter member of the Thompsontown Lion's Club, and a former member of the Thompsontown AmVets. He enjoyed the seashore, cats and country music and was very active in church and community activities.
His service will be held on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown with Bobby Sieber officiating. Interment will be in Locust Run Cemetery.
