ED WHETSEL

Ed "Mac" Whetsel, 75, of Connellsville (Bullskin Township), died Sunday, April 9, 2000, in UPMC Shadyside, Pittsburgh. Friends will be received in the BROOKS FUNERAL HOME INC., 406 E. Washington St., Mt. Pleasant, Tuesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Leroy C. Kesler and the Rev. Norman Johnston co-officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenlick Cemetery, Bullskin Township. The Bullskin Township Volunteer Fire Department will conduct a memorial service at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Leukemia Society of America in memory of Mr. Whetsel.

JENNIE B. DAINTY

Jennie B. Dainty, 88, formerly of West Newton, died Monday, April 10, 2000, in Monongahela Valley Hospital, Carroll Township. Born April 17, 1911, in Collinsburg, she was a daughter of the late John and Johanna Merella Povirk. She was a member of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church in West Newton. She was also a lifelong member of the SNPJ Lodge and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Slovenian Club, both in Collinsburg. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilfred Dainty, in 1980; a brother, Frank "Tucker" Povirk; and two sisters , Mary Smith and Angeline Florian. She is survived by three children, Nancy Gillingham and her husband, Chuck, of Rostraver Township, Winifred Oleksak and her husband, Larry, of West Newton and Wilfred Dainty and his wife, Teri, of North Zulch, Texas ; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Friends will be received Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the J. WILLIAM McCAULEY JR. FUNERAL HOME INC., West Newton. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, West Newton, with the Rev. John A. Regoli as celebrant. Interment in West Newton Cemetery.

ANNETTE MARIE DeROSE

Annette Marie DeRose, 83, of Greensburg, died Tuesday, April 11, 2000, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. She was born Jan. 7, 1917, in Oswego, N.Y., a daughter of the late Joseph DiBellis and Mary (Collittie) Bocco. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert G. DeRose; son, Daniel Walter DeRose; and sisters , Genivive Thayer, Margaret Meglino and Josephine Tronolone. Surviving are her children, Albert J. DeRose of Greensburg and Debborah Anne Woodfork of Washington , Pa.; brother, Walter O'Brien of Rome, N.Y.; and sisters , Grace O'Neil of Oswego, N.Y., and Mary Griffiths of Hawaii. Also survived by grandsons, Albert J. DeRose and Gregory Woodfork; great-grandson, James E. DeRose; and great-granddaughters, Pryechia and Rochelle Woodfork. Friends will be received at the KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME INC., 524 N. Main St., Greensburg, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Vincent Basilica. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Sharpsburg.

EDWARD J. FERRI

Edward J. Ferri, 70, of Murrysville, died Tuesday, April 11, 2000, in UPMC Shadyside, Pittsburgh. He was born March 22, 1930, in Turtle Creek, a son of the late Joseph and Mary Lazzeri Ferri. He was the CEO and president of Ferri Enterprises of Murrysville. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S.M.C. He was a member of the mother of Sorrows Church, Murrysville American Legion, National Federation of Independent Businesses, Civic Light Opera Guild, Frick Art and Historical Center, National Train Collectors Association, and Fort Pitt Train Collections Association. He was a member and Paul Harris Fellow of the Murrysville Export Rotary Club and he served on the Murrysville Streetscape Committee and the Advisory Board of Southwest Bank. He also was Santa Claus for many years at Clelian Heights. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Ferri, in 1997. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carole Petterson Ferri; a daughter, Karen Ferri and her husband, James Beebout, of Export; a son, John Ferri and his wife, Beth, of Murrysville; six grandchildren, Megan, Emily, Nathan, and Anna Ferri, and Isabella and Alexandra Beebout; three brothers , Eugene of Murrysville, Daniel of Jeannette, and William of Murrysville; a number of nieces and nephews; four uncles, Mario Ferri, and William, Peter, and Andrew Lazzeri; and three aunts, Madeline Stefancik, Irene Kulick, and Dolores Emery. Visitation Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the JOHN T. HART FUNERAL HOME, Murrysville. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in the mother of Sorrows Church, Murrysville. Interment will follow in the Grandview Cemetery, Export. If desired, memorials may be made to the Edward J. Ferri Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Southwest Bank, 3880 Old William Penn Highway, Murrysville, PA 15668.

ANN G. FURLICK

Ann G. "Annie" Furlick, 84, of Monroeville, died Sunday, April 9, 2000. A daughter of the late Peter and Katy (Valantic) Gasper. Wife of the late Steve Furlick. Beloved sister of Eva Anderson, Mary Gasper and the late Andrew and Adam "Babs" Gasper. Also nieces and nephews. No visitation. Family and friends are welcome to attend a Memorial Mass to be celebrated in St. Michael's Church in Pitcairn Thursday, April 13, at 10 a.m. Arrangements by ALFIERI FUNERAL HOME INC., Wilmerding, (412) 824-4332.

THE REV. JAMES ALTON HOWELL

The Rev. James Alton Howell, of Winterhaven, Calif., died Saturday, April 8, 2000. Retired pastor from the Free Gospel Churches in North Braddock, McKees Rocks, North Side, Youngstown and Akron, Ohio. Husband of Charlene Hustus Howell. Father of Mary Ellen Palmer of Yuma, Ariz., and Ruth Scoville of Quispamsis, New Brunswick, Canada. Brother of Dorothy Dutka of Monroeville. Also four grandchildren. Friends received Wednesday 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the JOBE FUNERAL HOME INC., corner of Shaw and Triboro avenues, Turtle Creek, where services will be Friday at 10 a.m. Interment in Hillview Cemetery.

ROSE M. (SINKEY) HUGHES

Rose M. (Sinkey) Hughes, 96, wife of the late Raymond W. Hughes, died Sunday morning, April 9, 2000, at the Montgomery County Geriatric Center, Royersford, where she lived since 1996. Mrs. Hughes was born Sept. 4, 1903, in Lloydsville, the daughter of the late Stephen and Barbara (Berzel) Sinkey. She was a 1922 graduate of Latrobe High School, and a 1927 graduate of St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing, Pittsburgh. Mrs. Hughes was a resident of the South Park section of Pittsburgh until she retired to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in 1970. She later returned north to Audubon, Pa. (Montgomery County), near her daughter, Jane. Mrs. Hughes worked at St. Francis Hospital as a staff nurse and private duty nurse until she retired in the 1960s. Mrs. Hughes was a member of St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church, Betzwood, and a former member of Nativity Catholic Church in Broughton. She also was a member of the South Park Women's Golf Club in Pittsburgh. Mrs. Hughes is survived by two daughters , Marilyn H. Henderson of Palm Springs, Calif., and Jane H. Moore of Audubon; a son, Raymond W. Hughes Jr. of Las Vegas, Nev.; and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held in Broughton. Arrangements are by the HOLCOMBE FUNERAL HOME INC., 21 Main St., Trappe, Pa., (610) 489-7266.

VIOLET T. MILLER

Violet T. Miller, 95, of Greensburg RD9, died Monday, April 10, 2000, in Jeannette District Memorial Hospital. She was born Sept. 14, 1904, in Jeannette, a daughter of the late Edward M. and Julia Dunmire Miller. She was a lifetime member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Jeannette. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles H. Miller; two sons , Kenneth and Lewis Miller; a grandson, Timothy Miller; a great-granddaughter, Theresa Pore; two sisters , Minerva Mertz and Susie Miller; and three brothers , the Rev. Edward Miller, Thomas Miller and Samuel Miller. She is survived by two daughters , Violet Pore of West Newton and Dorothy Heltebran of Wyano; two sons , the Rev. Charles Miller and his wife, Fay, of Antioch, Ill., and Alfred Miller and his wife, Ada, of Canfield, Ohio; a sister, Florence Keffer of Grapeville; a brother, Lewis Miller of Latrobe; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received in the MASON-GELDER FUNERAL HOME INC., 201 N. First St., Jeannette, Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Jeannette, with the Rev. Daniel R. Defassio officiating. Interment will follow in Brush Creek Cemetery, Hempfield Township.

THOMAS F. POOLE

Thomas F. Poole, 64, of Greensburg, died Monday, April 10, 2000, in Hempfield Township. He was born Aug. 16, 1935, in Baltimore, Md., a son of the late Franklin and Marie Rosche Poole. He was a retired employee of Keystone Concrete Pipe Co. in Bovard. He had served in the U.S. Army and was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Trauger and the VFW Post in Schellsburg. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Frank I. Poole; and an infant sister. He is survived by his uncle, Walter Poole of Baggaley; his three aunts, Emma Smeltzer of Mutual, Vivian Freeman of Lycippus and D. Louise Elder of Greensburg; his loving companion, Margaret Schwarzel of Greensburg; and his good friend, Charles A. Heasler of New Alexandria. Friends will be received at the KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME INC., 524 N. Main St., Greensburg, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Services will be held at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Trauger Thursday at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Kurt Kusserow officiating. PLEASE GO DIRECTLY TO THE CHURCH. Interment will follow in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Trauger.

JOHN S. RILEY JR.

John S. Riley Jr., 72, of Greensburg, died Tuesday, April 11, 2000, in the Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born April 13, 1927, in Greensburg, a son of the late John Stanley Sr. and Elizabeth Whalen Riley. Prior to retirement, he had been a painter working out of Union Local 409, and was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Church of St. Paul, Greensburg. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Viola J. Sova Riley, on Aug. 20, 1996; by a brother, Robert Riley, in 1978; and a sister, JoAnne D'Alessandro, in 1992. He is survived by two sons , Larry A. and his wife, Connie Riley, of Southwest Greensburg and Daniel and his wife, Valerie Riley, of Jeannette; a daughter, Bethanne Christner of Southwest Greensburg and her fiance, Michael Ross; a grandson, Shawn Christner of Greensburg; two sisters , Mrs. Anthony (Eileen) Pereira of Greensburg and Rosemary Kelley of Las Vegas, Nev.; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., 516 Stanton at Green streets, Greensburg, Thursday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. A blessing service will be held in the funeral home Friday at 9 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. in the Church of St. Paul, Greensburg. Interment will follow in the Westmoreland County Memorial Park, Hempfield Township. Family suggests memorial contributions to the American Heart Association, 615 S. Main St., Greensburg, PA 15601, or the American Cancer Society, 1011 Old Salem Road, Greensburg, PA 15601.

JOSEPH P. ROLLEY

Joseph P. Rolley, 68, of Bolivar RD1, died Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at UPMC Lee Regional, Johnstown. He was born May 24, 1931, in Fairfield Township, a son of Venna (Short) Rolley of New Florence and the late Robert Rolley. Prior to his retirement, he worked for the Allegheny Foundry Co., Robinson, as a molder for over 30 years. He was a member of the First Church of Christ, Bolivar, and a member of the American Legion Post #128. He served in the U.S. Air Force and served with the NATO mission, Allied Forces Central Europe from March 1954-January 1957. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Virginia (Bailey) Rolley, who died in July 1999. Survived by three daughters , Lori D. Rolley of Greensburg, and Barbara R. Cianca and Christine L. Shaffer, both of Bolivar; and two sisters , Mrs. Donald (Alice) Smithley of Bolivar RD1 and Sandra Malloy of New Florence. Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the J. PAUL McCRACKEN FUNERAL HOME, 536 Market St., Bolivar. Service will be held in the First Church of Christ, Bolivar, Friday, April 14, at 11 a.m. Interment West Fairfield Cemetery, New Florence. Veterans will present full military honors at the gravesite.

MILDRED E. SAMELLA

Mildred E. Samella, 76, of New Alexandria RD3, died Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at her home. She was born Sept. 28, 1923, in Derry, a daughter of the late Michael and Julia Gamble Kozamchak. Prior to retirement, she was employed by the former Chamberlain Corporation. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers , Michael, Joseph, John and Paul Kozamchak; and two sisters , Anna and Mary. Mildred is survived by her husband, John Samella; two sons , Kenneth and his fiancee, Brenda, and John Jr. and his wife, Susan, all of Latrobe; a daughter, Linda A. Seanor and her husband, John Jr., of Berlin; five grandchildren; three sisters , Kate Boggio and Helen Hoyle of Bradenville and Mrs. Robert (Julia) Newhouse of Blairsville; also numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the MICHAEL J. QUINLISK FUNERAL HOME INC., 548 N. Chestnut St., Derry. Parastas service will be held Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home. Panacheda service will be held Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home, followed by Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. in St. Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, Hillview Ave., Latrobe, with the Rev. Xavier Elambassery officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Derry.

CATHERINE B. VLASICK

Catherine B. Vlasick, of Monroeville, formerly of Swissvale, died Monday, April 10, 2000. Sister of Thomas J. Vlasick and his wife, Eileen, of North Huntingdon, Anna May Chanyi and her husband, John, of Swisshelm Park and the late Peter J. Vlasick and his wife, Helen, of Wilkinsburg. Also survived by nieces and nephews. Friends received Wednesday 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the THOMAS L. NIED FUNERAL HOME INC., 7441 Washington St., Swissvale. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's B.V.M. Church, Word of God Parish, Friday at 9:30 a.m. Interment in All Saints Braddock Catholic Cemetery.
