Mabel I. Meyers, 93, of East Stroudsburg, died Thursday, June 3, in the Laurel Manor Nursing Home in East Stroudsburg. She was the wife of the late Alphord J. Meyers.
She was born in East Stroudsburg, the daughters of Wilhelmina (Bago) and John Johnson. She was a lifetime resident of East Stroudsburg.
She was a member of the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in East Stroudsburg. She served several years as vice-president of the Church Vestry and was a member of the church's Women's Guild. She was also a member of the Monroe County Historical Society; member of the Stroudsburg Women's Club; member of the Auxiliary of Pocono Medical Center; President of Republican Women's Council from 1940-42 and a former member of the Board of Mansion House of Stroudsburg.
She was a graduate of Stroudsburg High School, class of 1923; a graduate of East Stroudsburg Normal School, now known as East Stroudsburg University. She did graduate work at East Stroudsburg State Teachers College and taught school at the March Building in Easton for 10 years.
She is survived by a stepson, Frank Meyers of Hanover; two step grandchildren, Nan Weismantel of Hanover and Vicki Meyers of New York; three great grandchildren, Craig and Scott Weismantel and Stacy Foreman of Hanover, two great grandchildren and several cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 8 at 11 a.m. in the Grace Lutheran Church in East Stroudsburg with the Rev. Phyllis M. Hammel officiating. Visitation will take place at the church from 10-11 a.m.
Interment will take place at the Stroudsburg Cemetery, Stroudsburg.

Charles A. "Chip" Evans Jr., 84, of Mountainhome, died Saturday in the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of Blanche I. (Albert) Evans, at home.
Born October 6, 1914 in Barrett Township, he was the son of the late Charles A. and Jennie F. (Seese) Evans, Sr. and had been a resident of Barrett Township all his life. He had been a foreman for the Pennsylvania Department of Highways for several years and was a machinist at J.A. Reinhardt and Co., Mountainhome for 18 years, retiring in 1976.
He was a member of the Mountainhome United Methodist Church and a former member of the Buck Hill Falls Golf Club and the Pocono Manor Golf Club.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Barbara Smith of Tannersville; three sons , Richard Evans, David Evans and James Evans, all of Mountainhome; two sisters , Miriam Kretzer of Roanoke, Virginia and Edith May Sieg of Canadensis; 13 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Charles Evans in 1985.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Mountainhome United Methodist Church with Rev. Elaine B. Barnes officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakland Cemetery, Mountainhome.
There will be a viewing on Tuesday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the church.

John Lane Essex Jr.

John Lane Essex Jr., age 69, of Greentown, and formerly of East Brunswick, N.J., died Friday, May 14, in Mercy Hospice, Scranton. He was the husband of Patricia Simme Essex, at home.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late John L. Sr. and Helen Kirk Essex. He resided in Greentown for the past seven years.
John retired in 1986, after 31 years as a senior customs inspector with the U.S. Treasury Dept. He also worked until 1990 as senior investigator with the New York State Board of Regents.
John was a Sherlock Holmes buff and had traveled to London twice in pursuit of his interest.
He was a member of St. Rita's Parish Churches and the New Jersey State PBA.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons , John L. III of Staten Island, N.Y. and Kenneth R. of Redding, Conn.; two brothers , Francis of Brooklyn and Henry of Sodus, N.Y.; two sisters , Elizabeth Moran of Brooklyn, and Evelyn Galek of Sodus; and five grandchildren, Alexander, Jonathan, Kristen, Annemarie, and Martha. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Mon., May 17, in St. Anthony of Padua Church, Newfoundland. The Rev Father Martin Boylan will officiate. Burial will be in Long Island National Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sat., May 15, and 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sun., May 16, at the Arthur J. Mildred M. Edinger

Mildred M. Edinger, 75, of Stroudsburg, died Wednesday evening, May 12, in Pleasant Valley Manor, Hamilton Township. She was the wife of John L. Edinger Sr., to whom she had been married since May 24, 1941.
Born on August 31, 1923, in Moscow, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Percy and Nellie (London) Silfee and had lived most of her life in Monroe County. From June 1972 until March of 1986, she lived in British Columbia, Canada. She had worked for Bethlehem Steel during the war and then for the Numaid Hosiery Mill; several blouse factories, and Anchor Davitt in East Stroudsburg.
A graduate of Chestnuthill High School, she had attended the Christian Life Assembly in Stroudsburg. She was a member of the Weaver's Guild and a participant at Quiet Valley. She loved to spin wool and make garments as well as knit, cook and bake. She was an avid reader and did crossword puzzles daily.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons , John L Edinger Jr. of Huntington, Mass., and Glenn Robert Edinger of Stroudsburg; a daughter, Carole Elaine Bachman of East Stroudsburg; four brothers , Everitt Silfee of Moscow, Garnold Silfee of Greentown, Howard Silfee of East Stroudsburg, and Nelson Silfee of Washington , Pa.; a sister, Bertha Ace of Lake Door, Fla.; two grandsons; three granddaughters; five great grandsons; two great granddaughters; two step grandsons; two step granddaughters; five step great grandsons; two step great granddaughters; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers , Gilbert Silfee, Ernest Silfee and Chester Silfee, and an infant grandson, Robert D. Edinger.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 17, at 11:30 a.m. from the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg, with Rev. John J. Puleo officiating. Burial will follow in Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg.
There will be a viewing on Monday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Evelyn Mae Bush, 84, of Stroudsburg and formerly of Paradise Valley died Friday, in Laurel Manor, Stroudsburg. She was the wife of the late Howard H. Bush, who died in 1994.
Born on July 1, 1914 in Analomink, she was the daughter of the late Gilbert and Mary (McNeal) Vaughn and had lived in the area all of her life.
She was a loving mother , grandmother and great grandmother.
She is survived by two daughters , Elaine Mutchler of Reeders and Barbara Shaffer of Canadensis; six grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Irene Parry and a granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. on Monday, May 17, in the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Robert B. Shrom officiating. Burial will be private in St. Paul's Cemetery, Swiftwater.
There will be a viewing from 7 p.m. until the time of the service, on Monday, at the funeral home.

Josephine Fodera, 78, of Blairstown, N.J., died at home on Saturday after a short illness.
She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to the late John and Rosaria (Rondella) Fodera on May 6, 1921, and has lived in Blairstown, N.J., all her life.
As a bookkeeper and clerk, she worked for the former K&S Market of Blairstown for 30 years, retiring in 1986. Miss Fodera was a member of St. Jude Roman Catholic Church of Blairstown.
She is survived by one sister, Anna Fodera of Blairstown, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers Ben and Tony, and one sister Frances.
A funeral liturgy will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Jude Roman Catholic Church, Blairstown. Burial will follow in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Blairstown. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Newbaker Funeral Home.

Bertha Nikolai, 94, of Encinitas, Calif., died on Friday, May 14, in Encinitas.
She was born in Germany, a daughter of the late John and Wilhemina Sorensen.
She is survived by four grandchildren, Heidi Scholz, Curt Scholz, Eric Scholz and Alan Scholz; three great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside funeral service and burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thurs., May 20 in the Shawnee Presbyterian Cemetery, Shawnee, with the Rev. Raymond Poortstra officiating. There will be no viewing.

Clare G. Jackson of North Scranton died Saturday evening in Mercy Hospital, shortly after arrival. She was the wife of the late Leo P. Jackson, who died February 13, 1980.
Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late John and Helen (McDonnell) Garvey. She was a graduate of St. Paul's High School, Scranton; a former democratic committee woman; and was employed by the Book Swap Scranton.
She was a member of Holy Rosary Church and the Tauras Club Ladies Auxiliary. She loved traveling, Irish music, and reading. She was a loving mother , grandmother, sister, and friend.
She is survived by her long-time companion, Patrick McTague of Scranton; two sons , Joseph Jackson of Scranton and Leo P. Jackson Jr. of Cherry Hill, N.J.; three daughters , Mari J. Morris of Baltimore, Maryland, Atty Janet Jackson of Bethlehem and Nancy Kearney of Laurel, Md.; one sister, Marie Garvey of Scranton; two brothers , Thomas Garvey of Laurel Springs, N.J., Eugene Garvey of Matamoras; 10 grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters , Anne Fadden, Rita P. Garvey and Rosaire O'Malley; and one brother, John Garvey.
The funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Wed., May 19, from the McGoff-Hughes Funeral Home, 1401 Capouse Ave., Scranton. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Holy Rosary Church in Scranton. Interment will be at Cathedral Cemetery in Scranton. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday.

Richard James Hamblin

Richard James Hamblin, 72, of Oswego Road, Blossvale, N.Y., passed away May 16, 1999, at Rome Memorial Hospital, N.Y. He was the husband of Ann Hamblin.
He was born January 13, 1927, in Paradise Township, a son of Clinton and Myrtle (Heydt) Hamblin. He was raised in Swiftwater and East Stroudsburg and attended schools in Tannersville and East Stroudsburg. He was united in marriage to Ann Flowers Sansenbach on October 14, 1977, in Rome.
Richard worked at Pearl Harbor Navy Yard, in Hawaii, in 1943, for the Navy Department, cleaning up after the Pearl Harbor invasion. He served in the U.S. military for 32 years, spending time in Japan and North Africa among other posts. He retired from the Air Force National Guard in 1978. He was employed at Griffiss Air Force Base in aircraft maintenance and retired in 1985.
He was a resident of Blossvale for 37 years, where he was an avid gardener, fisherman and hunter. He was well known to the citizens of Rome for his many "letters to the editor" to Rome newspapers. He spent much time reading, writing and traveling with Ann, and loved a good conversation with friends and relatives.
Richard was a life member of the NRA. He was also a member of the Henry P. Smith Post #24 of the American Legion, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the Air Force Sergeants Association and the Loyal Order of the Moose. He was a leader in both the Boy Scouts of America and the 4H Club.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Richard F. Hamblin of Lee Center, N.Y.; a step-daughter, Diane Dunster of Camden, N.Y.; a step-son, David Sansenbach of Bakersfield, Calif.; a sister, Katherine McGrath of Blakeslee; a brother, Robert Hamblin of Bangor; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by a sister, Anita Hamblin Rhyner of Anchorage, Alaska.
Funeral services will be held at 8:30 p.m. Tues., May 18, at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut St., Rome. Relatives and friends may call from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home. Interment services with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Thurs. May 20, at the Keokee Chapel, Paradise Township.

Jennie Catherine Smith, age 84, of Cresco, died Sun., May 16, 1999, in Mercy Hospital, Scranton. She was the wife of the late Maynard Smith who died in 1990.
She was born in Mountainhome, the daughter of the late Harvey and Ella (Rake) Schaller. She resided in Cresco for 40 years and prior to that in Mountainhome.
Jennie attended the Mountainhome United Methodist Church. She enjoyed feeding the many forms of wildlife that lived on and near her property.
Jennie is survived by two daughters , Anna Mae Drummond of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Mary Taylor of Seattle, Washington ; a son, Omar M. Smith of Jones Oklahoma ; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thurs., May 20 in the Arthur J. Frey Funeral Home, Route 191, LaAnna, with the Rev. Elaine Barnes officiating. Interment will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery in South Sterling. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wed., May 19, at the funeral home.

Thomas Henry Burke

Thomas Henry Burke, age 69, of South Sterling, died Mon., May 17, in his home, under the care of Mercy Hospice. He was the husband of Joanna Troch Burke, at home.
Born in Scranton, he was a son of Louise Houser Burke of Scranton and the late Henry Burke. He had lived in South Sterling for the past three years and prior to that in Tobyhanna.
Tom was land estate supervisor for Howard Phipps Jr. He was a member of St. Rita's Parish. He was a musician and expert carpenter. He also raised and raced pigeons and was a member of Hazleton Racing Pigeon Club.
In addition to his wife and mother , he is survived by a daughter, Beth Ann Rafnel of Mountainhome; a son, Thomas B. "Tim" Burke of Tobyhanna; a grandson, Wayde M. Rafnel of Mountainhome; two sisters , Gail Savanelli of Scranton and Mary Hoffecker of Del Ray Beach, Fla.; a brother, Paul J. Burke of South Sterling; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Father Martin Boylan at 10 a.m. Thurs., May 20, in St. Anthony of Padua Church, Newfoundland. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, South Sterling. There will be no visitation.
Memorial donations may be made to the Building Fund of St. Rita's Parish.
