Cremation services were provided by the Bolock Funeral Home.

Elizabeth "Betty" A. O'Neil

May 9, 1999

Elizabeth "Betty" A. O'Neil of Stroudsburg died Sunday in Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg. She was the wife of Thomas W. O'Neil, with whom she celebrated 51 years of marriage.

Born in Washington , D.C., she was the daughter of the late Edward J. and Ella (McMannus) Maloney.

In her early years she grew up and lived in the Pittsburgh area. She was secretary to the Dean of Men at the University of Pittsburgh for many years. In 1954, she moved to the Indianapolis, Ind., area and resided there until 1962. She then moved to the Stroudsburg area, where she has lived until the present.

She was a member of St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church of Stroudsburg and was president of the Altar and Rosary Society of St. Matthew's Roman Catholic Church of East Stroudsburg for years. She was a member and two-term past-president of the Auxiliary of Pocono Medical Center. She was also a member of the Rights to Life Group, Meals on Wheels of Monroe County, the Pocono Lively Arts Council of the Poconos and volunteered for many years for the Republican Committee of Monroe County.

In addition to her husband Tom, she is survived by two daughters , Joan Blaschak of Havertown and Karen Stets of Waynesburg; three sons , Thomas W. O'Neil Jr. of Carlisle, Michael M. O'Neil of Helena, Mont., and Patrick J. O'Neil of Stroudsburg; two brothers , Edward "Ted" Maloney of Mount Lebanon and Richard Maloney of Pittsburgh; two sisters , Eileen Joyce of Pittsburgh and Barbara Fitzgerald of Parma Heights, Ohio; and nine grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 12, from St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church, Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Thomas D. McLaughlin as celebrant. Burial will be in the Laurelwood Cemetery, Stroudsburg.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, May 10, and from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 11, at the Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home.

Memorial donations can be made to the Auxiliary of Pocono Medical Center, 206 E. Brown St., Stroudsburg, PA 18360, or to Rights to Life.

Melvin G. "Bub" Bush

May 8, 1999

Melvin G. "Bub" Bush, 75, of East Stroudsburg, died on Saturday evening at his home. He was the husband of Lois J. (VanVliet) Bush. They had celebrated 54 years of marriage.

He was born in Bartonsville, a son of the late George and Ida (Krotzer) Bush. He had been a lifetime resident of Monroe County. He was a member of the Analomink Methodist Church.

Prior to his retirement in 1998, he was employed by Mountain Manor Golf Course as a "ranger." Prior to that he was a truck driver for 40 years. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 1106 of Stroudsburg and the George N. Kemp Post 346, American Legion of East Stroudsburg. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters , Marie Fish of Daytona, Fla., Donna Oney of Stroudsburg and Kathleen Bush of East Stroudsburg; a grandson, Mario Campuzano of East Stroudsburg; a sister, Ruth Miller of East Stroudsburg; a brother, Floyd Bush of Brodheadsville; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 13, in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Catherine Horn officiating.

Interment will be in Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg. Relatives and friends may pay their respects from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Kenneth G. Miller

May 8, 1999

Kenneth G. Miller, 53, of Swiftwater, died Saturday at Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of Mary A. (Dyson) Miller, to whom he had been married for the past 18 years.

Born on July 26, 1945, in East Stroudsburg, he was the son of Violet (Papilion) Fish of Mount Pocono and the late Kenneth S. Miller and had lived in the area all of his life. He was a self-employed welder and excavator and enjoyed woodworking.

In addition to his wife and mother , he is survived by his grandmother, Lillian DeHaven of Mount Pocono; a sister, Carol Evans of Mountainhome; three brothers , Fred Miller of Albrightsville, Gary Miller of Mount Pocono and Robert Miller of Bartonsville; a half-sister, Sharon Fish of Stroudsburg; a half-brother, Frank Fish of Stroudsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main St., Stroudsburg, with the Rev. John E. Charnock Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Paul's Cemetery, Swiftwater.

There will be a viewing on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, R.R. 2, Box 2138, Stroudsburg, PA 18360 or to the Central Pocono Ambulance Corps, Tannersville, PA 18372.

Wallace A. Shoemaker

May 11, 1999

Wallace A. "Tyke" Shoemaker, 67, of 264 Allegheny Road, Mt. Bethel, died Tuesday afternoon, May 11, at his residence.

He was the husband of Shirley H. (Roberts) Shoemaker, who died on July 8, 1998.

Born September 21, 1931 in East Stroudsburg, he was a son of the late Arthur J. and Clara (Bartleson) Shoemaker.

He was last employed as a custodian by Diversey Wyandotte, East Stroudsburg for over 12 years, retiring in 1997.

Prior to that, he was a farmer for most of his life.

Mr. Shoemaker was of the Baptist faith.

He enjoyed working in the outdoors.

He is survived by one daughter, Shari S. Shoemaker, at home; two brothers , James W. Shoemaker of Quakertown, and Donald L. "Curley" Shoemaker of Elmira, N.Y.; one sister, Arlene R. Miller of Johnsonville.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Debbie Shoemaker.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.

There will be no viewing.

The Hough Home for Funerals Inc., 207 Market Street, Bangor, is in charge of the arrangements.

Richard P. Deiter Jr.

May 10, 1999

Richard P. Deiter Jr., 54, of Bartonsville, died on Monday, May 10, at Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of Darlene E. (Kemmerer) Deiter.

He was born in Cheltenham, England, a son of the late Richard P. and Nancy (Langston) Deiter Sr. and the late Tom Kishpaugh and the late Gladys Deiter.

Prior to his retirement in 1998, he was employed by Rock-Tenn Company of Delaware Water Gap for 22 years. He was a former member of the Acme Hose Company #1 of East Stroudsburg.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters , Deanna Deiter of Bartonsville and Jennifer Rusch of Limestone, N.Y.; two sons , Richard A. Deiter of Bartonsville and Jeffrey Deiter of Reeders; a granddaughter, Elaine Rusch of Limestone, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by a son, Robert S. Deiter and a brother, Robert A. Deiter.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 14 at 1:30 p.m. in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington Street, East Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Raymond Poortstra officiating.

Cremation will take place in the Arlington Crematory, White hall Township. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Friday, May 14 from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the services at the funeral home.

May 11, 1999

Miles T. Oney, 54, of Lake Ariel, died Tuesday, May 11, in Scranton Mercy Hospital, Scranton. He was the husband of Georgiana (Hines) Oney, at home.

He was born in Scranton, the son of the late Raymond and the late Freda (Clark) Oney.

He was a resident of Monroe County for the past 50 years, prior to moving to Lake Ariel five years ago.

He was employed for the last 20 years as a delivery man and service man for Mountain Fuels in East Stroudsburg. He attended East Stroudsburg High School.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters , Jami Clark of Bartonsville and Megan Oney of Lake Ariel; two sons , James R. Oney of East Stroudsburg and Miles Joseph Oney of Lake Ariel; four brothers , Raymond A. Oney of East Stroudsburg, Gary Oney of Stroudsburg, Guy Oney of Marshalls Creek and Delvin Owney of Belleville, N.J.; three sisters , Sophia Sampino and Ora Kuwaitkowski, both of Florida, and Emma Chumard of Lake Ariel; three grandchildren, Danielle Oney and Josephine Oney of East Stroudsburg and Harley Clark of Bartonsville; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 14, at 10:30 a.m. in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington Street, East Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Raymond Poortstra officiating.

Cremation will take place in the H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Friday, May 14, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the services at the funeral home.

May 12, 1999

Mary June Cross, 74, of Newfoundland, died Wednesday, May 12, in Wayne County Memorial Hospital, Honesdale. Mary was the widow of Allen G. Cross who died in 1995.

Mary was born in Tunkhannock, daughter of the late Benjamin and Frances Crawford Smith.

Mary was a member of the Hemlock Grove United Methodist Church, Greentown, and the Auxiliary of Post 859 American Legion, Newfoundland.

She had owned and operated with her husband, a Dairy Bar in Newfoundland during the 1950s.

Mary is survived by four sons , Ronald E. Cross of Greentown, Stephen J. Cross of Lake Ariel, Thomas A. Cross of Franklin, and Perry D. Cross of Newfoundland; three sisters , Ellen Roberts of Stroudsburg, Claire Kresge of Pittston, and Connie Yaungken of Orange City, Fla.; four grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday in the Arthur J. Frey Funeral Home, Route 191, LaAnna, with the Rev. Robert Allen officiating. Interment will be in Simonstown Cemetery, Greentown. Friends may call on Thursday, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

May 13, 1999

Mae H. Kressly, 99, of East Stroudsburg, died on Thursday, May 13, at the Stroud Manor in East Stroudsburg. She was the wife of the late Forrest Heller, who died in 1931 and the late Arthur G. Kressly, who died in 1978. She was a dedicated mother and grandmother.

She was born in Bushkill, a daughter of the late Harry P. and Sarah (Shouppe) Garris. She was a member of the East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church. She was a lifetime resident of both Pike and Monroe Counties.

She was the former owner and operator of the Palace Diner on Main Street in Stroudsburg. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the George N. Kemp, Post 346, American Legion, in East Stroudsburg.

She is survived by a daughter, Lorraine Cruse of Stroudsburg; a brother, Kemmie Garris of East Stroudsburg; eight grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; a great great grandson; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Shaffer.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 17, at 11 a.m. in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington Street, East Stroudsburg, with the Reverend Raymond Poortstra officiating.

Interment will be in the Stroudsburg Cemetery, Stroudsburg. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of the services at Lanterman & Allen.

At the request of the family, memorial donations may be made to the Building Fund at the East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church, 83 South Courtland Street, East Stroudsburg.

Mildred M. Edinger

May 12, 1999

Mildred M. Edinger, 75, of Stroudsburg, died Wednesday evening, May 12, in Pleasant Valley Manor, Hamilton Township. She was the wife of John L. Edinger Sr., to whom she had been married since May 24, 1941.

Born on August 31, 1923, in Madisonville, she was the daughter of the late Percy and Nellie (London) Silfee and had lived most of her life in Monroe County. From June 1972 until March of 1986, she lived in British Columbia, Canada. She had worked for Bethlehem Steel during the war and then for the Numaid Hosiery Mill; several blouse factories, and Anchor Davitt in East Stroudsburg.

A graduate of Chestnuthill High School, she had attended the Christian Life Assembly in Stroudsburg. She was a member of the Weaver's Guild and a participant at Quiet Valley. She loved to spin wool and make garments as well as knit, cook and bake. She was an avid reader and did crossword puzzles daily.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons , John L Edinger Jr. of Huntington, Mass., and Glenn Robert Edinger of Stroudsburg; a daughter, Carole Elaine Bachman of East Stroudsburg; four brothers , Everitt Silfee of Moscow, Garnold Silfee of Greentown, Howard Silfee of East Stroudsburg, and Nelson Silfee of Washington , Pa.; a sister, Bertha Ace of Lake Door, Fla.; two grandsons; three granddaughters; five great grandsons; two great granddaughters; two step grandsons; two step granddaughters; five step great grandsons; two step great granddaughters; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers , Gilbert Silfee, Ernest Silfee and Chester Silfee.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 17, at 11:30 a.m. from the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg, with Rev. John J. Puleo officiating. Burial will follow in Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg.

There will be a viewing on Monday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
