A.J. "Trucker" Newell

April 10, 1999

A.J. "Trucker" Newell, 70, of Hamilton Township, died early Saturday morning, April 10, at home.

Born on July 15, 1928, in Saylorsburg, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Helen (Duke) Newell and was a lifetime resident of Monroe County. He was the owner/operator of Newell's salvage yard in Hamilton Township.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by two daughters , Nicole Barney of Stroudsburg and Kathey Newell Kincaid of Riverview, Fla.; a son, Dale Newell of Tampa, Fla.; six step- daughters , Marjorie Fischer and Lorl Cordova, both of Queens, N.Y., Carolyn Martinez of Hoboken, N.J., Valerie Kinnally of Old Tappan, N.J., Yvonne Hodgdon of Lebanon, Ore., and Edwyna Weiss of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five brothers , Doug Newell, Allen Newell, Roland "Speedy" Newell and Pete Newell, all of Saylorsburg; and Victor Newell of Stroudsburg; a sister, Lucille Praetorius of Stroudsburg; 23 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Elaine Kunkle.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 13, at 8:30 p.m. from the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main St., Stroudsburg, with Rev. Samuel Ramnit, pastor of Cherry Valley United Methodist Church, officiating. Following the services, cremation will take place at the H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg.

There will be a viewing on Tuesday from 7 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Trust Fund for Katrina Adams, R.R. 5, Box 5283, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.

Paul C. Counterman

April 11, 1999

Paul C. Counterman, 68, of East Stroudsburg, died Sunday, April 11, at Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of Marie C. (Davenport) Counterman at home. They would have celebrated 40 years of marriage in September of this year.

He was born in Analomink, a son of the late James Reuben and Lillian (Bogart) Counterman. He had been a resident of Monroe County his lifetime. He was a member of the Salvation Army Citadel in East Stroudsburg.

Prior to his retirement, he was a custodian at the Salvation Army Citadel for four years. Prior to that he was a construction laborer. He was a 30-year member of the Construction and Laborers Union Local 1174 in Allentown. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters , Evelyn George of Saylorsburg, Lydia Strunk of East Stroudsburg and Diane Perry of Sugar Notch; a son, James P. Counterman of East Stroudsburg; a sister, Nina Getz of Tobyhanna; a brother, Robert Counterman of Stroudsburg; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur Counterman.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, with Brig. Henry Baker officiating.

Interment will be in the Sand Hill Cemetery, Shoemakers. Relatives and friends may pay their respects from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army Citadel, 226 Washington St., East Stroudsburg, PA 18301.

April 9, 1999

Theresa B. Tamulis, 87, of Stroudsburg, died Friday evening, April 9, at Pleasant Valley Manor in Hamilton Township. She was the wife of the late Joseph A. Tamulis Sr., who died Nov. 15, 1986.

She was born in Scranton, a daughter of the late Henry and Bernardine (Muller) Bader. She had been a resident of Monroe County for most of her lifetime. She was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church in Stroudsburg.

She is survived by two daughters , Margaret E. Somers of Stroudsburg and Ann Marie Lambert of Easton; a son, Michael S. Tamulis of Conway, N.H.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Joseph A. Tamulis.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 14, in St. Luke's Catholic Church, Main Street, Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Carmen Perry as the celebrant.

Interment will be in Laurelwood Cemetery, Stroudsburg. Relatives and friends may pay their respects at St. Luke's Catholic Church Wednesday, April 14, from 9 a.m. until time of the Mass at St. Luke's Church.

Kathryn B. Schoonover

April 10, 1999

Kathryn B. Schoonover, 79, of Lakeland, Florida, died on Saturday, April 10, at Tandem Health Care Center in Lakeland. She was the wife of the late Albert "Bucky" Schoonover.

She was born in Portland, Pa. the daughter of the late Clarence and Edna (Sheldon) Phillips. She was a former member of the former Sand Hill United Methodist Church in Shoemakers. She was a resident of Florida for the past 33 years and prior to that of Bushkill.

She is survived by a daughter, Georgia Hazen of Lakeland, Fla.; a son, Gregory A. Beam of Lakeland, Fla.; a sister, Doris Hallman of Media; a brother, Harold Phillips of Bangor; four grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 16, in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington Street, East Stroudsburg, with the Reverend Raymond Poortstra officiating.

Interment will be private in the Sand Hill Cemetery, Shoemakers. There will be no visitation.

April 12, 1999

Natalie M. Christal, 62 of Reeders, died on Monday in Albert Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia.

Born on January 19, 1937 in Morristown, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Natalis and Marjorie (McMahon) Chiappa. She lived in the area since 1982, moving here from Morristown.

She was a registered nurse having worked at several hospitals in New Jersey. She was a member of Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church in Tannerersville.

She is survived by children, Theresa Dinunzi of Reeders, Joseph G. Cunningham of Canadensis, Christine Meehan of East Stroudsburg, Sean P. Cunningham of Atco, N.J., Lee B. Green of Saylorsburg, and Maria C. Brown of Reeders; two sisters , Sister Theresa Chiappa of Ledgewood, N.J., and Carmella O'Rourke, wife of Brian O'Rourke, of Barnegat, N.J.; two brothers , Joseph A. Chiappa of Atco, N.J. and Thomas Chiappa, husband of Donna Chiappa of Morristown, N.J.; eighteen grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 15, in Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church in Tannersville, with Rev. Father Henry E. Zapotocki as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Prospect Cemetery in East Stroudsburg.

There will be a viewing from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 8:30 p.m. with Prayer Services on Wednesday, April 14, at the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg.

April 12, 1999

Edna M. Norris, 74, of Stroudsburg, and formerly of Saylorsburg, died Monday at the Laurel Manor Nursing Home.

She was the wife of the late Thomas B. Norris.

Born in Poplar Valley, she was the daughter of the late David P. and Jennie (Felencer) Groner.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She is survived by a stepson, Charles Norris of LaPorte, Texas , and by two sisters , Helen Hoffner of Saylorsburg and Charlotte Hennet of Poplar Valley.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday from Stroudsburg Cemetery with the Rev. Michael Eckroth officiating. Interment will follow. There will be no viewing.

April 13, 1999

Pearl Sutton, 79, of Stroudsburg, died Tuesday in Pleasant Valley Manor, Hamilton Township. She was the wife of the late Kenneth Hughes.

Born on June 12, 1919 in Burlington, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Helen (Martin) Measey and had lived in the area since 1976, moving here from California.

She is survived by two daughters , Mary Hughes Akola of Brodheadsville and Pat Hughes of Easton; a son, Kenneth Hughes Jr. of Turlock, Calif.; and six grandchildren.

Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Burlington, N.J.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant Valley Manor, 4227 Manor Drive, Stroudsburg, PA 18360 or the Country View Personal Care Home, RR 1, Box 1970, Kunkletown, PA 18058.

Margaret C. Loney

April 12, 1999

Margaret C. "Peg" Loney, 80, of Stroudsburg, died Monday in Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg. She was the wife of the late Warren F. "Mag" Loney who died in 1982.

Born on November 30, 1918, in Hudson, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Sumner Samuel and Kathryn (Thomas) Clouse and had lived most of her life in Stroudsburg. She had worked as a registered nurse at the General Hospital, now Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg; the Visiting Nurse Association; and retired as the Director of Nursing at Laurel Manor, Stroudsburg.

She was a graduate of West Scranton High School and the Moses Taylor School of Nursing in Scranton. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Stroudsburg where she taught Sunday School and served on the Board of Directors for many years. She was a member of the American Red Cross and was active with blood drives during her retirement years. She also served as a girl scout leader.

She is survived by a son, Warren F. "Mouse' Loney Jr. of Stroudsburg; a daughter, Margaret A. "Maggie" Loney, wife of James F. Altemose of Stroudsburg; two grandchildren, Warren Loney, husband of Carrie Loney of Saylorsburg and Michael Loney, husband of Kim Loney of Saylorsburg; and two great granddaughters, Jessica and Shannon Loney. She was preceded in death by three brothers , Sumner Clouse, William Clouse, and Franklin Clouse.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family a the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg, with Rev. Carol S. Brown officiating. Private burial will be in the Stroudsburg Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, 175 East Brown Street, East Stroudsburg, PA 18301; the Visiting Nurse Association, 500 Independence Drive, East Stroudsburg, PA 18301; or to the First Presbyterian Church of Stroudsburg, 579 Main Street, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.

April 14, 1999

Alma A. (Mrs. Raymond B.) Jeffrey, 100, formerly of Pittston, died Wednesday at Little Flower Manor, Wilkes-Barre where she had been a guest since August 1977.

Born November 3, 1898, in Pittston, she was a daughter of the late John and Anne Burke Sharkey.

She was a graduate of St. John's High School, Pittston, and East Stroudsburg Normal School.

Prior to her retirement, she was a teacher in several elementary schools throughout Wyoming Valley.

She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, William St., Pittston, and its Altar and Rosary Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond B., Jeffrey in 1975; a daughter, Christine J. McLaughlin in 1986; two sisters , and four brothers .

Surviving are a son, Rev. George A. Jeffrey of Wilkes-Barre; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Jeffrey, M.D. of Haverford; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A Concelebrated Funeral Mass will be held Saturday at noon in Saint John the Evangelist Church, 35 William Street, Pittston. Private entombment will be in St. Mary's Mausoleum, Hanover Twp.

Friends will be received in the church following Mass.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alma Sharkey Jeffrey Memorial Garden at Little Flower Manor, c/o St. Jeanette, 200 S. Meade Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.

Sara A. Price, 83, of Stroudsburg, died Thursday afternoon, April 15, in Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home, Hamilton Township. She was the wife of the late John M. Price.

Born on July 15, 1915 in Stroudsburg, she was the daughter of the late Frank W. and Emma (Featherman) Mader and was a lifetime resident of Monroe County.

She had owned and operated her own beauty parlor in south Stroudsburg, was a state board examiner for beauticians, was a surplus food administrator and had worked at the general stores that her late husband had owned and operated in Stroudsburg.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star #99 and St. John's Lutheran Church, Stroudsburg.

Surviving are a son, John C. Price of Stroudsburg; a daughter, Ann Sisson of New Haven, Conn.; four grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. She was predeceased by four brothers , Fred Mader, Joseph Mader, Claude Mader, and Frank Mader.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 20, at 2 p.m. from the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Gail H. Kees officiating. Burial will follow in Stroudsburg Cemetery.

There will be a viewing on Tuesday from 1 p.m. until the time of the services.
