Mary Ellen Ralston, 81, of Tappahannock, Va., and formerly of Stroudsburg died Wednesday, Feb. 24. She was married to the late entertainer, Mervin "Two Gun Fonty" Fontanella.
She was born in Indianapolis, Ind., the daughter of the late Charles D. and Elizabeth Oster Ralston.
She is survived by a son, George F. Stapp of Fredericksburg, Va.; a daughter, Diana Lee Svara of New York; nine grandchildren and one nephew.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, in the Marks-Bristow Funeral Home, Tappahannock, Va. The burial will take place at Essex Cemetery, Tappahannock.

Richard Allen Helfrich, 52, of La Plata, Md., died Wednesday, Feb. 24, at home.
He was born on July 9, 1946, in Baltimore, Md. He was the son of Elizabeth Kvist of Baltimore, Md., and the late James Helfrich.
He was an accountant with Senior Campus Living. Previously, he was an administrator at Pocono Hospital and lived in Stroudsburg from 1976 to 1980.
He lived in La Plata, Md., for 10 years, coming from Nashville, Tenn. He was a member of the Dundalk Methodist Church and master of Boy Scout Troop 1321 in La Plata, Md.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie L. Helfrich; son, Mike Helfrich of La Plata, Md.; brother, Robert Helfrich of Greenwood, S.C.; step- Father , Richard Kvist of Baltimore, Md.; and mother -in-law, Doris Hallett of East Stroudsburg.
A gathering will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. March 2 at the Arehart-Echols Funeral Home, 211 St. Mary's Ave., La Plata, Md. A memorial service will be at 7 p.m.

Anna Matulock, 79, of Hood River, Ore., died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999 at the Hood River Care Center of natural causes.
Anna was born on June 24, 1919 to Boris and Tessie (Senek) Bortnowsky in New York City, where she was raised and graduated from high school in 1938. On October 12, 1947, she married Pete Matulock and moved to Uniondale, N.Y., where she raised her children and worked for the county courts.
In 1985, she moved to Tobyhanna and stayed active with the senior citizens organizations. She moved to Down Manor in Hood River, Ore. in 1996 to be near her daughter.
Anna enjoyed her family, laughing, dancing, playing cards, traveling and talking to people. She was affiliated with the Russian Orthodox Church.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Pattie and Tracy Wickwire of Mt. Hood, Ore.; a son, Pete Matulock of East Meadow, N.Y.; grandsons Nicholas Wickwire of Mount Hood, Ore., Michael and Jesse Matulock of East Meadow, N.Y; a brother, John Bortnowsky of Newburg, N.Y., and various nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Pete, in 1991, her sister, Mary Chris in 1997, her mother Tessie Bortnowsky in 1993 and her Father , Boris Bortnowsky in 1967.
Visitations were held on March 1 and 2 at Anderson Funeral Home, 1401 Belmont, Hood River, Ore.

Rose May (Turner) Hawk

Rose May (Turner) Hawk, 98, of Scotrun passed away on Feb. 24, 1999, at the Brookmont Health Care Center, Effort, after an illness.
She was the widow of the late Alvin R. Hawk. A native of Scotrun, she was born the daughter of the late Edgar and Gertrude (Neuberg) Hawk. She was a life-long employee of the Brookdale lodge.

Louis V. Romano Sr.
February 27, 1999
Louis V. Romano, 88, of 9 E. Main St., Weatherly, passed away at Weatherwood Carbon County Nursing & Rehabilitation Center Saturday morning.
Born in Summit Hill on April 1, 1910, he was the son of the late Frank & Filomena (Grieco) Romano.
He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ Weatherly, where he served as choir director and organist. He was also a former member of the consistory at Salem. He served as organist at the First Presbyterian Church, Weatherly, and also played in many other local churches.
He was the founder and director of the Weatherly High School band and served from 1946 to 1966. He was the director of the Weatherly Town Band and a member of the "Variety Boys," a well-known Weatherly ensemble.
He was employed as a timekeeping supervisor at the Tung-Sol Plant in Weatherly for 28 years and retired from the Delaware Water Gap Bridge Authority, where he served as a tolltaker. He was also a former State Farm agent and had worked as a painting contractor with his Father , specializing in church sanctuaries.
He was a member of Hazle Lodge #327 F & AM Hazelton.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by a son, Frank L. Romano; a daughter, Mary Lou Sosnowski; a brother, John; and sister Donata "Lillie" Romano.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Martha J. (Weber) Romano; two sons , Louis V. Romano Jr. of Weatherly and Paul F. Romano of Effort; a brother, Anthony Romano of Stroudsburg; sisters Mary Romano, Philomena Kuchar and Mrs. John (Amelia) Kuchar, all of Weatherly. Nieces, nephews, eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren also survive.
Services will be held at the Phillip J. Jeffries Funeral Home, Weatherly at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
Burial will be in Union Cemetery in Weatherly. Calling hours are from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday. A Masonic service will be held at 7:30 p.m.
Family requests memorials in his name be made to the Salem Tower Fund, care of Salem U.C.C, First and Fell streets, Weatherly, 18255.

Zofia Kurylo, 83, of Tobyhanna died Saturday, Feb., 27 in the Pocono Medical Center. She was the widow of Anthony Kurylo.
Born in Zakooane, Poland, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Aniela (Gut) Gasienica. She was a resident of the Tobyhanna area for the past five years and prior to that she lived in the Newark, N.J. area. She came to the United States in 1956. While in Newark, she worked at the Haydu Meat Co. of Newark, N.J., for many years. She was of the Catholic faith.
She is survived by a daughter, Irene Gajda of Tobyhanna and two granddaughters and three great-grandchildren.
A Polish Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, Doylestown. Internment will follow the mass.

John F. Notabartolo, 71, of Tobyhanna, died Friday at Pocono Medical Center. He was the husband of Angelina (Napolitano) Notabartolo.
He was born in Staten Island, N.Y., the son of the late Charles and Maria Notabartolo.
Before his retirement, he was employed as a butcher. He was a member of Beacon Light Masons #66, Staten Island and U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons , John V. Notabartolo of Las Vegas, N.V., and Joseph C. Notabartolo of Tobyhanna; a brother, Frank Notabartolo of Staten Island, N.Y.; a sister, Mary Milata of Staten Island; and three grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at noon on Monday at the Bolock Funeral Home, Routes 940 and 390, Paradise Valley.
There will be a viewing from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Private internment will be Tuesday at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.

Brian G. Flynn

Brian G. Flynn, 39, of Sciota, died Feb. 26 at the Pocono Medical Center. He was born Aug. 14, 1959 in Denville, N.J., the son of Louise Taylor Flynn and the late William K. Flynn, who died in 1984.
He lived in Sciota for the last 10 years, moving there from Hackettstown, N.J. He was a salesman for Best Construction Co. in Sciota.
He is survived by two infant sons , Brian and William Flynn, a daughter, Missy Louise Flynn, all of Sciota; his mother , Louise Taylor Flynn of Stanhope, N.J.; two brothers , William Flynn of Denville and Lawrence Flynn of Clinton, Tenn.; three sisters , Kathleen Mourty of Belvidere, N.J., Maureen Flynn of Clearwater, Fl., and Deborah Healy of Great Meadows, N.J.
He was a peacetime veteran of the U.S Navy, serving six years in the U.S Navy. He was also a member of the Army National Guard for six years.
Visiting hours will not be held and the internment is private. A memorial mass at St. Mary's Church of the Assumption on High St. in Hackettsown at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, March 1.

William Havlena

William Havlena, 90, of East Stroudsburg, died on Sunday at Stroud Manor in East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of the late Evelyn (Blecha) Havlena, who died in 1996.
Born on June 7, 1908, in New York City, he was the son of the late William and Antonia (Kadlec) Havlena.
He was a graduate of New York University Dental School and practiced dentistry from 1940 until he retired in 1969. He served four years with the U.S. Air Corps as a dentist.
An avid golfer and bowler, he was a member of the Shawnee Country Club for many years.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 4, from the Thomas Funeral Home, with the Rev. Gail Kees officiating. Entombment will take place in the Rose Hills Memorial Park, Putnam Valley, N.Y.
Calling hours will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday from the funeral home.
Memorial donations should be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

William Geisse Shain

William Geisse Shain, 79, of Bethlehem, formerly of Stroudsburg, died on Sunday morning at St. Luke's Hospital in Fountain Hill. He was the husband of Marie (Heyl) Shain at home.
Born on Nov. 1, 1919, in Tamaqua, he was the son of the late Charles H. and Emma L. (Fey) Shain.
He attended the Tamaqua Public Schools and graduated from Tamaqua High School in 1936. He attended the Peddie School and graduated from Temple University in 1941 with a bachelor's degree in journalism. He worked for the Morning Chronicle and later the Evening Bulletin in Philadelphia.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945, serving in the South Pacific as a first lieutenant and supply officer of the USS Varuna. After the war, he was employed by the Atlantic Refining Co. in Philadelphia. After the company's merger with Richfield Oil Co., forming Atlantic Richfield Co. (ARCO), he was elected vice president of public relations in 1972. After a brief stay in Los Angeles, he returned to New York and served as corporate vice president for East Coast Operations until his retirement in 1978. During this period, he also served as the first president of the ARCO Foundation.
Mr. Shain lived with his family in suburban Philadelphia from 1946 to 1965 when he moved to New York and lived there until he retired to Stroudsburg in 1978. He lived in Stroudsburg and Fort Myers Beach, Fla., until 1998, when he moved to Kirkland Village, Bethlehem.
He was an accredited member of the Public Relations Society of America, serving as president of the Philadelphia chapter, also serving as president of the Foundation for Public Relations Research and Education and was publisher of the Public Relations Journal. He had been a vice president of the Business Council of the Arts and the Keep America Beautiful organizations. He had been active in Boy Scouts his entire life, from membership in Tamaqua Troop 76; to a Cub master in Wayne; Scoutmaster in Devon 50 in Devon; and elected to the Devon 50 Hall of Fame in 1977.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Stroudsburg, where he had served on the Church Council as chairman of the Finance Committee, the Stewardship Committee and the Evangelism Committee. After he retired to Stroudsburg, he served as executive director and board member of the Jacob Stroud Corporation; had been on the Executive Committee of the United Way, president of the Monroe County Arts Council; member of the Rotary Club of Stroudsburg and elected Rotarian of the Year in 1988; and was a member of the Board of the Monroe County Public Library.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons , William G. Shain Jr., John H. Shain and Charles H. Shain II; and five grandchildren.
Memorial funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 2, at 11 a.m. from St. John's Lutheran Church, 9 N. Ninth St., Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Gail Kees officiating.
Calling hours will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
