Kathryn E. Koch

February 13, 1999

Kathryn E. Koch, 80, of East Stroudsburg, died Saturday, February 13, in her home. She was the wife of the late Aloysius Koch.

Born in Hannover, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Halana (Ratajczyk) Heilig.

She was employed by East Stroudsburg University in the food department for 20 years before retiring in 1987.

She is survived by a son, Ingo Koch of Buffalo, N.Y., and friends, Stephen and Doris Kuti of Atlantic Beach, Fla.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, February 18, at 11 a.m. in Hopedale Moravian Cemetery, Green Twp., Pike County.

Dr. Harold Sackett Pond Jr.

February 16, 1999

Dr. Harold Sackett Pond Jr., 86, of Stroudsburg, died Tuesday in the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of the late Ruth J. (Peterson) Pond who died in 1985.

Born on June 16, 1912 in Grand Forks, N.D., he was the son of the late Harold S. Sr. and Marian (Seeley) Pond and had lived in the area for the past sixty years. A graduate of the University of North Dakota, he taught at the University of Pennsylvania . A Doctor of Internal Medicine, he was the Gold Medal Recipient on May 16, 1985. He was employed at the Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg with private practice until retiring in 1982 at the age of 70. He was a First Board Certified Internist from 1947 to 1959; First Chief of the Department of Medicine from 1947 continuing as chief of the Department until 1974.

In 1943, he served in the American Red Cross of the United States Army in Ledo, Assam, India, retiring as Lt. Col. and served in the Army Reserves. He was a member of the American Medical Association and the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army. He was also a member of the Christ Episcopal Church of Stroudsburg.

He is survived by a daughter, Susan Smith of Oneida, N.Y.; a son, Peter Pond of Belton, Texas ; a brother, William Pond of Bemidji, Minn.; a sister, Rebecca Boyum of Cherokee, N.C.; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and his personal friend and caregiver, Nadine Roth-Lazur of Saylorsburg.

Dr. Pond's remains were conveyed to the Humanity Gifts Registry for Scientific study at the University of Pennsylvania , Philadelphia.

Memorial services will be announced at a later date. There will be no viewing.

Dr. John Trainer Sr.

February 13, 1999

Dr. John E. Trainer Sr., 84, of Moravian Hall Square, Nazareth, formerly of Allentown and Lake Wallenpaupack, died Saturday, Feb. 13, in St. Luke's Hospital, Fountain Hill. He was the husband of the late Ruth P. (Pate) Trainer.

He was a senior professor of biology at Muhlenberg College before retiring in 1979, after teaching 40 years. He was the first faculty member to hold the titles of associate professor and senior professor.

In 1969, he received the Christian and Mary Lindback Foundation Award for distinguished teaching, and in 1979, the biology museum was named the Trainer Science museum in his honor. In 1980, he received the Muhlenberg Alumni Achievement Award.

Before teaching at Muhlenberg, he taught a natural history field course at Cornell University. He also taught at East Tennessee University.

In the 1950s, he presented a course on ornithology on the television show, "University of the Air."

A 1935 graduate of Muhlenberg College, Trainer received his master's degree in 1938 and his Ph.D in ornithology from Cornell University in 1946.

Born in Allentown, he was a son of the late Charles E. and Linnie S. (Hoch) Trainer.

He was a past president and founding member of the Lehigh Valley Audubon Society and a former board member and vice president of Lacawac Sanctuary in Wayne County. Last year, a bench was dedicated in his honor at Hawk Mountain.

He was elected a fellow of the Shankweiler Society in 1996 and was a member of the Allentown Board of Health, 1951 through 1977.

He is survived by two sons , Dr. John E. Jr. of Atlanta, Ga., and Dr. David G. of East Stroudsburg; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Egner Memorial Chapel at Muhlenberg College. Call 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel.

February 17, 1999

Lisa Muringer Schmidt, 87, of Stroudsburg, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, in Laurel Manor, in Stroudsburg.

She was born in Grotzingen, Germany, the daughter of the late Edward and Marie (Rinderspacher) Muringer. She lived inNew York and Florida before moving to the area in 1950.

She worked as a housekeeper at the Boca Raton Country Club, in Florida, and at Buck Hill Falls, and Birchwood, inPennslvania. She was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ, in Stroudsburg.

She is survived by two sons , William E. and Richard A Schmidt, both of Stroudsburg; a sister, Victoria Laidlaw, of Australia; three granddaughters, Barbara Weber and Diane Driebe, both of Stroudsburg and Deborah Szakal, of Allentown; five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters , Erna Onken and Mary Heil.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 21, at the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg, with the Rev. John Steitz officiating. Cremation will be in the H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg.

Patricia A. Wolfe

February 14, 1999

Patricia A. (Kurtz) Wolfe, 56, of Pocono Lake, died Sunday, Feb. 14, at the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, in Wilkes-Barre. She was the wife of Gene Wolfe.

She was born and raised in Trenton N.J. She also lived in Florence, N.J., before moving to Pocono Lake 22 years ago.

Along with her husband, she is survived by her mother Ada Williams Kurtz and her stepfather, Richard Everett, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, John O'Brien and his wife Alisa, of Pocono Lake and Michael O'Brien, of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Kelly Safin and her husband, Keith, of Long Pond; four grandchildren, Kyle, Sean, and Kelsey O'Brien and Ryan Safin; two sisters , Rosemary Dunn, of Robbinsville and Helen Kurtz, of Trenton; two brothers , John J. Kurtz, Jr., of Ordway, Colorado and Frank S. Kurtz, of Melbourne, Fla.; and her mother -in-law, Nellie S. Wolfe, of Florence.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 19, at the Dennison Funeral Home, 214 W. Front St. Florence, with the Rev. Patricia Wentworth, of the Florence United Methodist Church, officiating. Friends may call on Thurs., from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Florence.

February 16, 1999

Mary W. Jackson, 88, of Stroudsburg, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, at the Hillcrest Retirement Community. She was the widow of Robert Jackson, who died in 1980.

She was born in Jersey City, N.J. to the late Mr. and Mrs. David Wilkinson. She was of the Presbyterian faith.

She was a resident of the Stroudsburg area for the past two years. Prior to that she lived in the South Jersey area.

She is survived by two nieces, Mildred Ostrander, of Milford, and Mary Ostrander, of Sandtberg Mills, N.Y. and a nephew, Richard Jackson, of Lakewood, N.J.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 19, at the Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home, 23 N. Ninth St., Stroudsburg. Rev. John H. Magee is officiating. Cremation will take place at the HG Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg. Her remains will be buried at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Lakewood, N.J.

Geraldine J. Hahn

February 17, 1999

Geraldine J. Hahn, age 65 of Towamensing Twp., died Wednesday, February 17, 1999, at home.

She was the wife of Clarence D. Hahn. They had been married 47 years.

Born in Hatchery, Pa., on August 12, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Mary (Meckes) Zacharias.

She and her husband owned and operated C.D. Hahn Concrete in Towamensing Twp.for over 29 years.

She was a member of the Jerusalem United Church of Christ in Towamensing, Twp., Trachsville.

She had graduated from the Polk School in Kresgeville, she was also a member of the Polk Twp. Alumni.

She was a Past President of the Auxiliary of the Towamensing Twp. Volunteer Fire Company in Towamensing Twp. She was a member of the Young at Heart Senior Citizens in Kresgeville.

She had been a former Cub Scout Den mother for Den #209 and a former president of the PTA at Towamensing Elementary School.

In addition to her husband, Clarence, she is survived by a daughter, Betty wife of Wayne Knirnschild; four sons , Larry and his wife Marie Hahn, Terry and his wife Janine Hahn, Harry and his companion Betty Anthony, and Barry and his wife Candy Hahn, all of Towamensing Twp.; three sisters , Emma Kunkle of Allentown, Myrtle Zacharias of Kunkletown, and Lerene Bruch of Kunkletown; one brother, Roy Zacharias of Kunkletown; ten grandchildren; and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by two brothers , Marvin Zacharias and William Zacharias.

Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, February 22, at the Donald N. Gower Funeral Home, Inc., Route 209, Gilbert, with the Rev. Becky J. Beckwith officiating. Interment will be in the Jerusalem Lutheran Cemetery in Trachsville, Towamensing Twp. Viewing will be held Sunday, February 21, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.

February 18, 1999

Leo F. Hughes, 75, of Reeders, dies Thursday, February 18, 1999, in the Country Meadows Nursing Home, Bethlehem. He was the widower of Marian (Geissel) Hughes, who died in 1995.

Born in Pottsville, he was the son of the late Walter E. and Laura (Poppert) Hughes. He was a resident of the Reeders area since 1955, and prior to that lived in the Baltimore, Md., area. He was a supervisor at the Tobyhanna Army Depot, Tobyhanna for 34 years, retiring in 1980.

He was an Army Air Force Veteran of World War II, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War, Sciota Post and the American Legion Post #346 in East Stroudsburg. He was of the Catholic faith being a member of Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church in Tannersville.

He is survived by four daughters : Mary Ann Bisbing of Reeders; Laura Majestic of Athens, Tenn.; Pauline Lance of Stroudsburg; and Leona Hughes of East Stroudsburg; three sisters : Anna Kurteck and Louise McCaffery, both of Pottsville; and Eva Kapchack of Levittown; a brother, Thomas Hughes of Annville; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, Feb. 22, at 1:30 p.m. from Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church in Tannersville, with the Rev. Father Henry E. Zapotocki as celebrant. Burial will be in the Laurelwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Monday, Feb. 22, from 12 noon until 1 p.m. at the Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home, 23 North Ninth Street, Stroudsburg.

John J. Sovak

February 18, 1999

John J. Sovak, 81, of Stroudsburg, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, in the Laurel Manor Nursing Home, Stroudsburg. He was the widower of Shirley J. (Smith) Sovak, who died just two months ago, Dec. 18, 1998.

Born in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Paul and Virginia (Kovacs) Sovak. He had lived in the Stroudsburg area for the past 30 years, and prior to that lived in various areas throughout the country, during his 25 years serving in the military. John was a retired master sergeant He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam.

He was a member of St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church of Stroudsburg and a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels of Monroe County. He was also a charter member of the Antoine Dutot Museum and Gallery of Delaware Water Gap.

In John's retirement years he enjoyed collecting and repairing clocks of all types.

He is survived by a daughter, Amy Nese of Bethlehem; a son, John (Jack) J. Sovak Jr. of Ellenville, N.Y.; a sister, Anna Long of Frederick, Md.; six grandchildren: Laura, Christine, William, Jean, Jennifer, and JoAnn; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, Feb. 22 at 10:30 a.m. from St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church of Stroudsburg, with the Rev. Father Thomas D. McLaughlin as celebrant. Burial will be in the Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg.

Visitation will be on Sunday, Feb. 21 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home, 23 North Ninth Street, Stroudsburg, and on Monday, Feb. 22 from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass at the church.

Memorial donations can be made to the Monroe County Meals on Wheels, 9 North Ninth Street, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.
