Marie F. Mitchell

Marie F. Mitchell, 92, of Stroudsburg, died at the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg on Saturday, Jan. 30 after a month's illness there. She was a resident of Pleasant Valley Manor since February 1994. She was the wife of the late William C. Mitchell, who died on Feb. 14, 1997. They had celebrated 68 years of marriage.
Born on Nov. 30, 1906 in Carbondale, she was the daughter of the late Frank W. and Eliza (Hocking) Ferrel. Marie and her husband, Bill, founded Mitchell's Meat Market in February 1955 and were joined by their son, Ted , in September 1955. Bill and Ted worked together until 1978 when Bill retired.
Marie lived in Carbondale, Scranton, Sunbury and Forty-Fort before coming to Stroudsburg in 1955, they lived here until 1979 when they retired to Titusville, Fla. returning here in 1989 to be close to their family.
Marie was a member of the Stroudsburg United Methodist Church; the Christian Pals Sunday School Class and the Mary Circle of Women's Society. She was a past president of Stroudsburg Women's Club and was also a member of the Glenbrook Country Club Golf League.
She is survived by a son, Ted L. Mitchell, husband of Audrey Mitchell, of Stroudsburg; two daughters , Sally A. Small, wife of G. Kenneth Small of Naperville, Ill. and Sue Carol Gartner, wife of Gehard Gartner, of Oswego, N.Y.; eight grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Pleasant Valley Manor Activities Fund, 4227 Manor Drive, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.
Memorial services will be held at a later date at which time both Bill and Marie's cremains will be interred together in the Laurelwood Cemetery, Stroudsburg.

Suzanne Hay
February 10, 1999
Suzanne Hay, 89, of Stroudsburg, died Wednesday, Feb. 10, in the Hillcrest Retirement Community, Stroud Twp. She was the widow of David Hay.
Born in Highland, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary Dulin.
She was a resident of the Stroudsburg area for the past 50 years and prior to that she lived in the Philadelphia and Highland area.
She was employed at the former Ronson Lighter Corporation of Delaware Water Gap for many years, retiring in 1962.
She was a member of St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church of Stroudsburg.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 10 a.m. from St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church of Stroudsburg with the Rev. Father Thomas McLaughlin as celebrant.
Burial will be in the St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Cemetery, Freeland.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, Feb. 16, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass at the church.

Russell R. Van Buskirk, Jr.
February 10, 1999
Russell R. Van Buskirk, Jr., 70, of Panther, Pike County, died Wednesday at Pocono Medical Center. He was the husband of Frances Weinland Van Buskirk to whom he had been married for 48 years.
Born in Panther, he was a son of the late Russell and Eleanor (Elder) Van Buskirk, Sr. He was a lifelong resident of Panther.
A 1947 graduate of Greene-Dreher High School, Newfoundland, Russ first operated a family dairy farm with his Father . In 1963, he began an 18 year career with PennDOT where he held positions of Highway Maintenance Foreman, Pike County Assistant Maintenance Manager, and finally as Construction Project Supervisor. Also during those years, he co-owned and operated Panther Hills Landscape Service with his son. Most recently, Russ worked as an Equipment Operator for Edwards Sand & Gravel, South Sterling.
Russ served as a Greene Township Supervisor and Pike County Republican Committeeman for many years. He was a member of the Newfoundland Moravian Church. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Sgt. Warren R. Van Buskirk, PA State Police; Duncannon, Pa.; a daughter, Barbara J., wife of John Gilpin of Panther; two sisters , Elaine Muller and Diane Razny, both of Panther; four grandchildren, Jason Van Buskirk of Panther, Schiavon Van Buskirk of Duncannon, Wade J. and Austin D. Gilpin, both of Panther; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Neal S. Van Buskirk.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 13, in the Arthur J. Frey Funeral Home, Rt. 191, LaAnna. Interment will be in Moravian Cemetery, Newfoundland. Friends may call Friday 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. until the services at the funeral home.
Memorial remembrances may be made the Newfoundland Moravian Church Building Fund or to the charity of one's choice.

Sarah Ruth Mikels Miller

Sarah Ruth Mikels Miller, 82, of Stroudsburg, died Thursday evening in Brookmont Health Care Center, Effort. She was the wife of the late Harold L. Miller who died in 1988.
Born on February 11, 1917, she was the daughter of the late LeRoy and Emma (Sieg) Mikels and had lived most all of her life in Stroudsburg.
A 1933 graduate of Stroudsburg High School and a 1937 graduate of Cornell University, she taught at the East Stroudsburg State Teachers College and later at the Bangor Junior High School, retiring in 1977. She was a member of the Stroudsburg United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a son, David L. Miller of Cherry Hill, N.J.; two daughters , Joan E. Santomauro of Saylorsburg and Rita C. Miller of Arlington, Texas ; three grandchildren, Rhett C. Setzer, Jessica E. Setzer and Giles A. Santomauro; a sister, Ethel A. Farnell of Stroudsburg; a brother, Warren F. Mikels of Stroudsburg; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services and burial will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Laurelwood Cemetery, Stroudsburg, with Rev. George S. Rigby Jr. officiating.

Gerald Vedova

Gerald Vedova, 84, of Lake Naomi in Pocono Pines, died Thursday morning at the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg.
He was born March 23, 1914 in Wilkes-Barre, a son of the late Ignatius and Lucia Kusmick Della Vedova.
Mr. Vedova was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater. He was formerly employed by Glendale Farms and the Dolly Madison Company in New Jersey. He was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, South Main Street, Wilkes-Barre.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, the former Helen Martin, on January 28, 1999. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Derna Malacarne in 1998.
Surviving are two daughters , Mrs. Paul (Lois) Kronicz of Piscataway, N.J., and Mrs. Edward (Jeanne) Renner of Bayville, N.J.; two grandchildren; one brother, Gary Della Vedova of Wilkes-Barre; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Maple Hill Cemetery, East St. Mary's Road, Hanover Twp., with Rev. Mary E. Laufer, Pastor of the Messiah Lutheran Church, officiating.

Alfred A. Power

Alfred A. Power, 94, fondly known as the "Bard of Bay Ridge", died Wednesday evening, Feb. 10, in Pleasant Valley Manor, Hamilton Township. He was a former resident of Maple Run Manor, Snydersville, and prior to that had lived in East Stroudsburg.
Born on December 21, 1904, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late John J. and Elizabeth (Muirhead) Power and had lived in the area since 1991, moving here from Brooklyn. He had worked as a plumber for the City of New York.
He is survived by two daughters , Arlyne Dieterich of East Stroudsburg and Virginia Kavanagh of Suffolk County, N.Y.; two sons , John Power of Staten Island, N.Y., and James Power of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a brother, Rev. Bernard Power of Hampton, Va.; and five grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, Feb. 15, at 10 a.m. in St. Matthew's Roman Catholic Church, East Stroudsburg with Rev. Thomas Sokolowski and Rev. Bernard Power as celebrants. Burial will follow in the Gates of Heaven section of Laurelwood Cemetery, Stroudsburg.
Viewing hours will be on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg.
The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, P. O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101-9929.

Willis H. Schubert

Willis H. Schubert, 76, of East Stroudsburg, died on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at the VA Medical Center in Plains Twp. He was the husband of Sarah Ann (Schaller) Schubert, at home. They had celebrated 53 years of marriage.
He was born in Meadville, a son of the late Girard and Naomi Schubert. He had been a resident of Monroe County for most of his lifetime. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II.
Prior to his retirement in 1977, he was employed by the Hughes Printing Company in East Stroudsburg as a proof reader for 28 years. He was a member of the Typographical Union at Hughes
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Susan DeBoer of Stroudsburg; two sons , Michael J. Schubert of East Stroudsburg and David E. Schubert of Bamberg, Germany; three grandchildren; two sisters , Deloris Hermann of Arkansas and Marcellaine Transue of Stroudsburg; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Willis J. Schubert, and a brother, Edwin Schubert.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 11 a.m. in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington Street, East Stroudsburg, with the Reverend Raymond Poortstra officiating.
Interment will be in the Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Monday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Lanterman & Allen.

Norbert W. Gropp, 66, and Dolores T. Gropp, 49, both died on Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, at their home in Marshalls Creek.
Norbert was born in Berlin, Germany, son of the late William and Herta Gropp. He was employed as a flight service attendant with TWA Airlines in New York for 30 years, retiring in 1990. He was also a security officer at Pocono Mt. Lake Estates in Bushkill for the past few years. He is survived by a sister, Renaatta Schlichting of Stuggard, Germany. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Dolores was born in Espanola, New Mexico, the daughter of Isabel (Montoya) Abeyta of Seattle, Washington , and the late Charles Abeyta. She was employed as a stewardess with TWA Airlines in New York from 1969 to 1973. After her children became older, she became a licensed practical nurse having worked at the Planned Parenthood of Northeast Pennsylvania , here in Stroudsburg. She is survived by four brothers , Richard Abeyta, Dennis Abeyta, Phillip Abeyta and Robert Abeyta, all of Seattle, Wash.; three sisters , Rosemary Thompson and Elizabeth Yamaguchi, both of Seattle, Wash.; and Carla Larson of Boise, Idaho.
In addition to the above survivors, both Norbert and Dolores are survived by two sons , Damian P. Gropp and Matthew N. Gropp, both at home in Marshalls Creek.
Norbert and Dolores had lived in the Marshalls Creek area for the past 30 years and prior to that they resided in the New York and New Mexico areas.
They were members of St. John's Roman Catholic Church of Bushkill and both were Eucharistic Ministers at the church.
A Memorial Prayer Service for both will be held on Sunday, February 14, at 6 p.m. from St. John's Roman Catholic Church, Bushkill, with the Rev. Msgr. Kevin P. O'Neill as celebrant. Burial will be on Wednesday, February 17, in the Washington Memorial Cemetery, Seattle, Washington .

Lester Everett Jr, 72, of Effort, died Saturday, Feb. 6.
He was the beloved husband of Lovetta; Father of Donna McCoy and Patricia Richardson; grandfather of seven; greatgrandfather of one; brother of Shirley Riley, Cora Scott, Hayward and Henry Everett; and Father -in-law of Robert McCoy and Courtney Richardson.
